"Unopposed under crimson skies Immortalized, over time their legend will rise. And their foes can't believe their eyes, believe their size, as they fall And the dreadnoughts dread nothing at all"
There was also a South American Dreadnought race between the ABC powers (Argentina, Brazil, Chile). Argentina ordered two, and so did Chile while Brazil went all out and ordered four. Argentina basically "won" that race when they got all their Dreadnoughts faster, since of the three ABC powers, they were the only ones to have them built in shipyards in the US, while Brazil and Chile ordered theirs built in European shipyards, when WW1 started, the European major powers needed all the ships they could get their hands on, so they "borrowed" the brazilian and chilean ships so those countries didn't get theirs until after WW1 was over, if they did at all, by then Argentina already had their two Dreadnoughts. Only one of Brazil's four Dreadnoughts ever made it to Brazil, the Minas Gerais, of the other three one sank en route, one was used by the Ottomans and later by the British, and the last one never got finished because WW1 started. Both of Chile's Dreadnoughts got taken by the British, one eventually reached Chile and the second one was kept by the British and later convered into an Aircraft carrier. So that was it, of a total of 8 Dreadnoughts only 4 reached South America, Argentina had 2, Chile had 1 and Brazil also had 1.
Man, you talked about how South American powers all ordered dreadnoughts in the 1900s and you didn't even mentioned that one time the crew of one of those from Brazil got tired of being flogged like slaves, mutinied, and fucking _aimed their guns at Brazil's Capitol building?_ Bummer.
Augusto Vasconcellos true i’m Brazilian it was a whip revolt or Brazilian Dreadnought crews pointed their guns at The city for the punishments they received there were previous revolts in the navy with the end of the Monarchy in 1889 too
2 things with this video, 1. The first super dreadnoights were the British Orion class, due the the inclusion on 13.5 inch main guns all on the center line and an extra 2000 ton displacement. 2. The Queen Elizabeth's are considered the first fast battleships.
Ron Lewenberg they were more of a covering force for the battle cruisers. They didn't take part in the initial engagement. My point still stands tho. They were the first fast battleships
@Ron Lewenberg Scheer & Hipper realized the naval arms race was lost when they saw that the british had already deployed 7 warships with 38CM guns, when the germans had only recently completed Bayern and Baden was still being built. Also, unlike previous ships, these ships showed impressive long range accuracy (further improved in late 1917 with the green boy shells)
Partisans were everywhere, in every country the germans and italians had taken, although the polish resistance force was the most well organized of them all.
Unopposed under crimson skies, Immortalized overtime, their legend will rise. And their foes can't believe their eyes, believe their size as they fall. And the Dreadnoughts dread nothing at all.
The Queen Elizabeth class was not the first super Dreadnought that is a common misconception. It was accually the Orion/Conqueror class with 5x3 13.5 inch guns.
Just a quick note about the "Super Dreadnoughts": The "Orion-Class" was considered the first real Super-Dreadnoughts, not the QE-Class. However, the QE-Class were the first so called "Fast-Battleships". Both were completed before the war.
Umm the Orion-class were the first super dreadnoughts, guys... And the all-big-gun concept was being toyed with worldwide, the British just got such a ship in the water first because their Navy wasn't being starved of funds and they had ridiculously good, ridiculously fast-building shipyards that allowed them to build the Dreadnought in a mere year...
A very good example of one of these Queen Elizabeth class super dreadnoughts is HMS Warspite. Flagship of the Mediterranean fleet and the ship with the most battle honours in royal navy history. Serving in both WW1 and WW2 she gained the honoured nickname 'The Grand Old Lady'. There is so much that can be said about this ship but I encourage you all to go and research it yourselves as her service life was very interesting. She survived until the very end of the war, long passed where her usefulness was expected and was finally broken up. It is a damned shame that we never turned her into a Museum ship, guess the resources of a battleship were too much to leave alone.
Dreadnoughts definitely didn't make all previous classes of ship redundant. Especially considering Japan had already invented the destroyer at the turn of the century. The lack of small guns also meant that dreadnoughts had to rely on destroyers, or more primitive equivalents, in order to defend themselves from torpedo boats- the invention of torpedoes being the reason why naval technology evolved for long-range warfare to begin with.
Dreadnoughts turned all capital ships redundant. Not necessarily all fleet units. Lack of small guns? The QE class carried as much firepower as a cruiser or several destroyers along its sides in casemates.
Interesting fact. in WW2 when France fell to Nazi Germany, Winston Churchill ordered France to disband their navy so it could not fall into Germanys hands. France declined so the British Med and channel fleet destroyed all of Frances navy with some french still on board. Really puts the brutality of WW2 into perspective, but I guess someone had to make the hard decision
While practically everyone else was pumping out dreadnoughts, the French were building the Danton class, which was best described as a super-pre-dreadnought. It had 12 10-inch guns and 4 12inchers. Thanks to horrifically bad layout, their broadside was six 10 inchers and four 12 inchers. This type of armament was abandoned half a decade before by other navies who found that a non-uniform heavy gun armament resulted in poor accuracy (difficult to distinguish between 10 inch splashes and 12 inch splashes). At this point (1907 shipyard generation of ships), both the British and Americans were on their second generation of Dreadnoughts. The Americans were building the Delaware class, with its ten 12 inch gun broadside (inline super firing guns for the win), while the British were making their Neptune class, a slightly better version of the Dreadnought.
Greg Burman The Royal Navy destroyed only parts of the French Navy at Mers El Kébir in Algeria. Essentially they sank one battleship and damaged two more plus three destroyers, killing 1300 French sailors during the attack. A bunch of French ships that was in British harbors was seized by British sailors and soldiers. The bulk of the French fleet scuttled itself at Toulon in November 1942 when Germany occupied also Vichy France and tried to capture the fleet. There the French scuttled 3 battleships, 7 cruisers, 15 destroyers, 13 torpedo boats, 12 submarines and a bunch of other navy ships. All in all the French destroyed 77 of their own ships in Toulon.
