Hi, Aubrey, I've just finished painting my front door and architrave using your methods - including the numbered post-it notes. Mine were colour coordinated, too. It was my first attempt and I wish I could post a pic so you can see the progression. I'm really proud of it and I've had so many positive comments from neighbours and friends! I visited B&Q today to buy a sealant for the glass panel above the door, and showed a staff member a picture I'd taken on my phone, pointing out the area I wanted to seal. I also thanked her for her advice on the correct paint. She did a double take and asked if the phot was of MY front door. She thought it was an example from a magazine. I was very flattered. Thank you so much for such a comprehensive tutorial. I''ve subscribed to your channel and will be sure to check your methods as I continue my decorating. 👍😀
That is fantastic news. So glad it all went so well for you. It is a shame I cant see a picture of the complete door. I hope things continue to go well for you with your future decorating projects, please keep me posted on your progress 😊
Thank you sooo much for explaining things so well in all your videos .. I lost my husband and so at 73 I've started painting in the house again! All the hall doors etc. seemed very daunting but after watching your video, I'm inspired .. thanks again.
Nice tutorial video. The order of painting the door with explanation was helpful for beginners. I’ve been a professional painter for 22 years and though my technique is slightly different the strong basic foundation for painting a door is spot on. Great job!
Very easy step to step guide. I was able to follow all the steps and I didn’t get any paint runs on any of the door panels. This man is a brilliant painter. In the past my pairing was not up to standard but I can now say I have learn how to paint like a professional now just by watching the video on how to paint the door. Thank you so much excellent demonstration. God bless you
Thank you Ruthlyn for your lovely feedback. I am so glad you found the video so helpful and enabled you achieve such positive results. I do hope all goes well with all your future decorating projects. 😊
Ah many thanks. Wish I’d found this video yesterday I’ve got 13 doors to to paint and spent half a day on one! Off it’s hinges, dust sheets out...primer...wait to dry...flip it over...primer...wait to dry...top coat of satin...wait to dry...flip it over...you get the picture!😂 Definitely subscribing. Starting from scratch again tomorrow! 😉👍
Goodness me Steve, 13 new doors to paint, that is a mission. Glad to hear the video is a big help for you. You are going to be a master door painter after all this. 😊 Thank you for subscribing 👍
You are a pro. Here’s why: you have patience. I haven’t read any other comments but I would bet that many people have criticized your method that it’s time consuming. But to paint well, it takes time, and even more time to do a video explaining it! I love you Brits how you explain things and your tools. They always seem to look well used! Nice job!
Thanks Spencer, your comments are much appreciated. Yes, everything seems to be about speed nowadays but it does take time and patience to achieve the higher standards. Many of my tools are like old friends and I know I can rely on them. Thanks again, Aubrey.
This is what I was looking for. Lots of well explained details and taking the time to paint without rushing through it with a well traced plan. Painting real good is a marathon, not a sprint.
Thanks for being such a great teacher. I’m painting panels, frames, doors and repos in my 120 m2 apartment in a bit and I think it’s going to get easier with your videos.
About the paint, is it water based or oil based, I'd imagine if it was oil based eg gloss you wouldn't use kitchen towel to wipe excess paint off stile edges? And water based is easier to work with.
In addition you are so easy to follow. My husband is a contractor but does a lot of painting but we end up arguing doing it together bc he thinks I should know all this. Now I do!❤
What an excellent video. Very helpful. What a great bloke too. Explains everything carefully like a great teacher and in a reassuring way. One of the best decorating videos I have seen. Thank you Aubrey.
Sir Aubrey, Your skills, professionalism, pride, and patience are in short brilliant. I don't think there are many true masters of their craft like you left nowadays, unfortunately. My dad now sadly departed, was a CRACKING! pro painter/decorator too. You truly are, a joy to watch and listen to.
Thank you! I'm so happy you showed what order to paint the door panels! I've been DIY painting for several decades and this very detailed video was a perfect review.
😂most of us are on a hop up for the top rail. Great straightforward intro to panel doors. 2 tecniques I was taught were to strike in the eye level and handle rails before the top one. Starting in the middle with the paint over strokes from laying off the muntings and painting out both sides evenly. A sponge plug in the handle hole stops your paintbrush picking up dirt, and it soaks up any excess around the edge.
Incredibly helpful. Many thanks Aubrey - I now know why the Zinsser Cover Stain looks so bad, and how to correct it with the undercoat and the topcoats over the next couple of days! Your efforts are greatly appreciated!
Super tuition! My DIY decorating 'technique' [!] was rusty, so I watched your expert demo and it really helped me improve the finish I achieved on our doors. Thank you so much for your patient and professional instruction!
Really useful video. I'm an (occasionally) keen DIYer and found Aubrey's demonstration and explanations really easy to follow. Exactly what I was looking for to prevent me from creating a dog's breakfast. Many thanks.
So glad I just watched your video. Just about to paint new panelled interior doors and was just going to go crazy with a brush and pot of paint! Would've been a total disaster! Had no idea there was an order and special technique! Lol. Thank you so much!
Thanks Aubrey, great video, followed your advice on painting the first of 8 panel doors and got the best results i ever have, now i can complete the other seven with confidence!!

Thank you so much for this video. After being let down by our decorator we resorted to painting our door ourselves. I had to learn very quickly that there is much more to painting a door than you realise, if you want it to look good. I really appreciate the great explanations and advice in this video!
Very detailed video and great demo , using no 1, 2,3,4 ,as selection to work with. I am a completely 0 experience tone painter , thank you for adding confidence for me start painting!
This is the third video i watched - I;ve done maybe a dozen doors but def not as good as this pro! This is the only video I could LIKE or subscribe to - well done!
I painted my front door a few years ago. It turned out ok, but not great by any measure. Now that I have seen Aubrey's video I can't wait to re-paint it, the proper way. Thanks so much for this great video.
Your video was very well explained. I am going to try painting a door inside a bathroom. I am anxious but it better to have tried something to find out my skills. Thank you for your video.
I found this video extremely helpful. Thank you for taking the time to do this and post it. I am going to try to replicate your work in Kentucky/US. THANKS!
Well explained. This is extremely useful for those who worry about painting panel doors. There's other options but you're showing basics and explaining why you're doing a certain way 👌. No RUclips when I was learning so sometimes mistakes were made 😁. Good video.
Thank you so much. We're doing a house up in Ireland and have ALOT of painting to do... Your demo is very easy to follow and I don't know how many times I've referred to a screenshot I took of the numbered panels to make sure I'm doing it right 😁
Good video. Part of my job is doing the painting in rental properties and i always find it interesting to see other people's way of doing things. The way you do it is the way my dad advised me to do it. One thing i didn't hear you mention is the other reason why you wipe the paint off any section you are not painting at the time is because if that paint that has run over gets any chance to dry a bit, even for 5 minutes, when you paint that section it will show up brighter because it has received 2 layers of paint instead of one, then it will be patchy. The thing i would have done though is where you go over on to a different section ie painting the top horizontal piece, where it goes over onto the vertical side section i would have wiped it off in line with the joint as the same as i mentioned before, if you overlap , the bits that have had 2 coats will be brighter than the rest
A lot painters have different ways. However that more or less the way I do it. But I would suggest bringing both sides down at the same time to keep your wet edges going. I know your demonstrating so you can move quickly. But it’s important to move quickly or the paint will pull particularly on a hot day ! This is very important!
Hi Audrey, why did you choose to use a brush for all the work and not a roller on the flat panels? Your videos are enormously helpful, thanks for making them.
This video is great. Really really helpful. Painted my undercoat in a different order and ended up scuffing my wet paint when I got back to the beginning. Just done my top coat using your order and I’m really pleased with it. Thanks Aubrey. Legend
Thank you so much for sharing your technique. I have painted many paneled doors in my lifetime, but was looking to refine my brush technique. Since moving to in Georgia, I have noticed the heat & high humidity can really affect how the paint lays down, even if I add in paint conditioner (not to mention drying/cure times are very wonky!). I tried your method, and I got a fantastic result. Just switching up the order in which I painted the panels, rails and stiles really helped me brush faster, with more focus, and the paint laid down super smooth as a result. Thanks again!
Hi Kimberly, I admire your determination to achieve high standards with your painting technique. Glad to hear you have persisted and got the high quality of finish in your completed work. Many of the modern paints do dry very quickly so having a plan and good technique can make all the difference. Good luck with your future decorating projects.
Thank you for posting this video. The last time I tried to paint a door I made a right mess of it and I swore I’d never attempt it again. I’ve got a house full of doors that probably haven’t been painted for the last 20 years and I can’t afford to pay a professional to come in and paint all my doors and skirting boards etc but after watching your video I can see where I went wrong before so will have another go.
New to painting doors due to the painters I know are totally booked up Never realised how much preparation goes into painting a door Anyway, I kept checking your video each time, to make sure I was doing it properly with the 1,2,3,4 system I'm so happy now and (exhausted) Now to the next one. Only 11 more to paint 😱
I love this video.. it's like going to painter school. One question please. Painting gloss skirts against a Matt/silk wall... Which one do we do first?
Hi, glad you found the video helpful. Paint the wall first and clip the skirting board 5 - 10mm with the paint. Then paint the skirting board cutting in a nice straight line as you go. Hope that helps. 😊
Nice tutorial. Oddly enough, I've been painting my 6-panel doors as part of a my house remodel and unknowingly followed this exact sequence, but I like using a 4 or 6" roller for the flat parts. Much faster and gives me an even coat with no brush marks.
So many useful tips, with explanations to go with them. Brilliant. I wish I'd seen this before I started the job! One question, do I need to sand between top coats, as I will be applying 2? Many thanks.
Glad you are finding the videos helpful. I would de-nib the surface by lightly sanding with a fine abrasive before applying the final coat. Hope all goes well with the decorating 😊
watching this i can imagine " The Candle Man " pulling out a 9 inch roller and walloping it then laying it all off in under 3 mins. But this method is pure class. Thanks for sharing your techniques .
That's because he is on price, he's only doing that on building sites because the quicker he completes a property the more money he makes. I do get your point though, this way is the way you're taught in college(which I was taught), would even use some wet and dry sandpaper to get the door feeling like glass 😂
Great job!! This is exactly the way I paint doors if I'm only using a brush. Otherwise, I brush only brush the grooves on the #1's and roll all the parts by your number pattern with a foam roller and tip it out with a brush.
Many thanks and I am glad to see that I do it almost the same as you. Learnt some things. One question is a second coat of gloss required or should one be sufficient. Thanks again
I am a fellow painter and i have to say that you are a very good teacher sir. and this is an excellent video. very well detailed.
Thank you very much Michael. I do appreciate your kind comment. I hope all is well with you on the P&D front. 😊

first good video i have seen in RUclips about door painting. i do same way but anyway if i have quick dry egshel is still problem to paint Perfect...
Superb video - thank you! Do I paint the top of the door last?
I do not usually paint the top of the door unless it can be seen from above. Glad you found the video helpful 😊
@@AubreysAbsoluteDecorating That's great - thank you!
Exactly see my comment 👍
Thank you for your video so detailed and easy! Can’t wait to try this with my doors 😊
Glad you found the video helpful Claudia, hope all goes well with the decorating 😊
@@AubreysAbsoluteDecorating Thank you so much, very helpful.
Hello from Las Vegas. Nice job on the doors. 🚪 🚪🚪🚪
Hello Las Vegas and thank you from the South of England 😊
Love how detailed all your tips are. So helpful! Thank you
Glad you are finding the videos helpful E`ala, hope all goes well with the decorating 😊
Excellent video. Cheers
Thank you, glad you found the video helpful.
watching this i can imagine " The Candle Man " pulling out a 9 inch roller and walloping it then laying it all off in under 3 mins. But this method is pure class. Thanks for sharing your techniques .
Thank you Mandy, glad you found my method useful 👍
That's because he is on price, he's only doing that on building sites because the quicker he completes a property the more money he makes. I do get your point though, this way is the way you're taught in college(which I was taught), would even use some wet and dry sandpaper to get the door feeling like glass 😂
"Who makes up these names?"--good one, great instructional video. Thank you for sharing.
Glad you liked the video, good stuff 😊
Great job!!
This is exactly the way I paint doors if I'm only using a brush. Otherwise, I brush only brush the grooves on the #1's and roll all the parts by your number pattern with a foam roller and tip it out with a brush.
Yes, I do the same when I roll a panel door. 😊
Can you explain what you mean by "tip it out" please?
Wow it’s just a perfect tutorial 👏
Thank you 😊
Painting by numbers 👍
Thankyou for such a helpful video.
Glad it was helpful! 😊
Many thanks and I am glad to see that I do it almost the same as you. Learnt some things. One question is a second coat of gloss required or should one be sufficient. Thanks again
As long as the undercoat has covered well then one coat of gloss should be fine 😊
Brush holds a decent amount of paint. I used a 3” Purdy for decades and just bought. 3” Wooster. That little brush looks tasty.
I was using a 1.5" Purdy Monarch Elite. I agree, the Wooster`s are good too 😊
