I saw this movie when I was 12. I believe it influenced my life for the positive. Now in my 70s, this music still moves me and so does John Wayne's speech.
Saw this movie while in the 5th grade (Flatirons elementary in 1962) at the Chautauqua park in the old wood movie theatre in Boulder, CO I was 10. Later moving to Costa Mesa, CA......just above Newport Beach and meeting John Wayne at Harts sporting goods in CM.. Time sure does fly. And yes, Mr Wayne was larger than life even in an old sporting goods store. A true superstar.
I think dimitri Tiomkin was a natural musical genius. He belongs with bach , Beethoven and brahms whom he said were his inspiration. He was a natural musical genius whom God gave the world .His music will live on for many years.
The John Wayne production of The Alamo is a movie with a great soul and it speaks to everyone whoever sees it, wherever their country and whatever their fortunes may be. "This movie will run forever," said John Ford. He was right. So long as free men and women live and breathe they will remember the Alamo.
This soundtrack was my first album, apart from children's records. I still have my original vinyl with my name proudly inscribed on the back cover. Much later I bought the cd version with bonus tracks. Needless to say it has always been an inspiration. I went to Davy Crockett Elementary School 'n am a Crockett Rocket!
We were able to tour this actual set near Bracketville, TX several years on a bicycle tour. I’m unsure if it’s still open but ever since, I have thought back to that visit many times. This movie is a forever treat. The music is terrific.
Although this film didnt do so well at the box office, i truly believe it told the story of the Alamo seigein a way that could be understood by all who have seen it. A superb telling of an American and Mexican story. Respect 4 the men of ALL nations who died.
it did well in 1960 in the big cities in Texas where it ran for weeks, but no where else. It ran at the Hollywood theatre in Ft. Worth for 16 weeks that fall to full crowds.
I never did understand why it didn't perform well at the box office. It's a fine film. Saw it in 70mm with a beatuiful image and sound. John Wayne was superb. And "The Green Leaves of Summer" was so effective on the soundtrack!
Of the 200 or so defenders, 15 came from Pennsylvania, more than from any other state north of the Mason-Dixon Line. Overall, Pennsylvania and Virginia are tied for third in the number of native sons lost in the battle. The Pennsylvania contingent included three officers, Capt. Almaron Dickinson, Lt. George C. Kimbell and 2nd Lt. John M. Thurston, as well as the highest-ranking enlisted man at the Alamo, Sgt.Maj. Hiram James Williamson. The other defenders known to be from Pennsylvania were John J. Ballentine, James Murry Brown, John Cain, Robert Crossman, David P. Cummings, James Hannum, Samuel Holloway, William McDowell, John Purdy Reynolds, William Johnson and John Wilson.
Inspired music worthy of the valor and the selflessness that is shown by these Heroes….our Commonwealth’s (Pennsylvania) volunteers and all the others…make me proud and grateful
My ancestors fought for the alamo tbh. Only know my family were all spanish or mexican at the time and they side with Santa Anna cuz we had land tbh and one of our family members idk who personally sided with texans tbh.
Many times. I grew up in San Antonio and I took Texas history in the 7th grade. We had to memorize and recite Travis’ Alamo letter. FYI, the Alamo is made of limestone, not adobe, just like the other missions in San Antonio. Adobe is baked mud and would deteriorate in the rain over the centuries. There are a lot of limestone deposits in the Texas Hill Country. One of my high school buddies started a pest control company and was asked to treat the Alamo for termites.
I’ve never seen The Alamo, but Inglorious Basterds has inspired me to sit down and watch it. Tarantino has introduced me to a lot of movies through his own, and I think that’s awesome.
I like the fact that Santa Ana isnt shown as a bad merciless villain. He let everybody leave in peace who want to go and only see the staying fighters as oppenents. I think that not even the mexicans today cant denie the braveness and will of the defenders of Alamo. When i watched this movie first time as a child i was that shocked about the death of John Wayne and Richard Widmark bec i didnt know the historical facts about Alamo, it was just a western movie for me. I never expected that Wayne and Widmark not survive as glorious winners like in all other westerns.
good point. being for Texas I can also say that every person at the Alamo came from somewhere else, since Texas was basically originated from Eastern settlers, there was even some men from foreign countries there too. remember the Alamo
My great grandfather fought with the company of Juan Sequin. They were all native to Texas. Juan Sequin, with a couple of his men were sent as couriers with message to Sam Houston. The rest of his men died at the Alamo. Even though we are still called Mexicans we are all still Americans and we spilt much blood for Texas independence
Always loved this haunting intro to this movie. Byrd Lockhart, Alamo defender, courier, spy and one of the organizers of the '32 immortals' from Gonzales, is my 5th great uncle on my late father's side of the family. He was on his way back to the Alamo on the morning of March 6th with supplies when he realized something had happened. He did not hear the usual morning firing of the largest canon. He and his companion went back to Gonzales with the news. The roads between San Antonio and Gonzales were swarmed by Mexican Cavalry.
Great movie show the American soldier defending the territory . If im not so have a comment further. Freedom is awarded to us from almighty God. Never conqueror .
To defend the Faith...bearing we too the Cross...to defend the Live from womb until natural death....to defend every man and woman...taking the Holy Spirit...Holy Virgin Mary us helpes...Jesus yesterday , today, tomorrow ,always...
One of the worst movies ever made, production was poor, John Wayne's direction was awful, Wayne, Harvey and especially Widmark's acting was awful, but if I were told I was dying, this would be the movie I'd want to watch
Amo esta película ,siempre me hace llorar. con Jhon Wayne Lawrence Harvey ❤
I saw this movie when I was 12. I believe it influenced my life for the positive. Now in my 70s, this music still moves me and so does John Wayne's speech.

A great moment of History with strong and courageous men
Beautiful ... sure appreciate Dimitri Tiompkin for his Western Music
Takes a real Russian to write western music. He was a mestro in his day!

I do agrees Michael. Wayne’s version is the best even though Billy bob thorntons is more historical accurate
Went to the Alamo a couple of years for my birthday. Really hallowed ground. One thing for sure a lot of Brave Men on both sides died on March 6th.
The Alamo 13 Days To Glory Sunday March 6th,1836 The Five hours that changed the course of history forever
STAND TALL, TEXAS!
One of the greatest movies about one of the greatest events in American/Texan history. True sacrifice for liberty. How many of us could do the same?
Sadly that America is long gone.

With all the divide in the USA this movie should give the present generation a view of what it took to put this country together
12/22/21..Things haven't changed the divide much over this past year but I have firm hope for the future...
I agree... But this generation has the attention span of a flea
I love this movie,i love John Wayne

Sean McDowell, a retired DJ from WDVE in Pittsburgh talked about his descendent William McDowell having fought at the Alamo.

Hermosa música, ideal para una gran película. Vivira para siempre en mi memoria.
I was only five or six when I saw the movie at the drive in. I have always remembered this song.

Not enough chanting in modern film music. They seriously need to bring that back and kill off cinema, forever.
