And I didn't realize until I rewatched some old episodes, but OMG, Steven said the names of the Crystal Gems so much whenever he was in distress, it was practically a drinking game!

To me, Amethysts worst momnt was shape-shifting into Rose to spite Greg.
Her best moment was after the Rose Quartz/ Pink Diamond reveal and she kept asking how Steven was feeling about it instead of falling apart on him and giving him another thousand year complex to fix
Amethyst is such a goat, the only Crystal Gem that never constantly gave Steven trauma aside from probably that one Rose shapeshift scene
She also decided to show Steven more of the gems story instead of hiding it from him, which also bugged me out as Steven should've been ready a long time ago

Her making an effort to stop parentifying Steven is so significant and hit so hard
I love how Amethyst became the only gem to really understand Steven on a personal level and that moment where she says she won’t dump another 1000 year conflict on him is one of my favorites in the show
I think amethyst is the most human out of all the gems. The only reason she isn't more wise is because like Steven she is growing up like him and is immature. But you can definitely see her become more mature towards the end of the series.
“I’m not gonna let you stand there and remind of everything I HATE about myself,” and “I never asked to be made.” Those lines really dug in me, and were some of the few Steven Universe scenes that got me to tear up. Having been adopted from birth, and never knowing my biological family, I’ve had a lot of issues with identity so Amethyst in many regards has been a comfort character for me. Don’t get me wrong, what she did to Greg & Steven shapeshifiting into Rose was out of pocket, but mind that she did good later in the series, supporting Peridot, and checking in with Steven when Ruby & Sapphire split in Season 5.
Amethyst probably gets the most necessary development out of all three original crystal gems cause it shows how she is a hero yes but definitely the most morally questionable
Fun Fact: Rebecca Sugar revealed that Amethyst's designs and color palette are based on Lumpy Space Princess, due to her earlier work on Adventure Time
Peridot considered Amethyst the only gem that mattered in the Cristal Gems saying that Pearl was just a pearl ,Garnet was an unnecessary fusion.and Steven something she didn't even know how he worked
Amethyst is probably the most relatable character I have ever seen in fiction. Every single one of the episodes that focus on her personal struggles hit so hard. The episode where she first shows Steven the kindergarten where she was made was the episode that sold me on the show. Her dialogue while she is fighting Pearl is some of the realest stuff I've ever heard in a cartoon.
I loved Amethyst so much, she reminded me of my cooler older cousins, I feel really bad for her because she's always seen as immature, unworthy, and less important compared to the other gems. But I think she's the only reason Steven held out for as long as he did, because she was aware of his emotions and tried to keep things light and fun.

That quote really makes me wonder if the gems, Steven included, needed to spend some time all apart from each other and reunite once they could deal with their personal issues better.....

@@DrawciaGleam02 I think amethyst, out of anyone, would understand Steven in a deeper way than even himself. She recognized what the problem was and attempted to "lighten the load" and offer an understanding ear before anyone else did. If Amethyst was able to spend more time with older Steven she probably would've stopped his complete breakdown and probably encouraged a healthier form of release than turning into Godzilla's cousin Devilmon

One critique of Future I recall hearing is that the writers PURPOSEFULLY wrote everyone that could support Steven out of Future's story in order to ensure he had a breakdown....
I know, it's bizarre.
But I feel that that claim could apply to other arcs within the franchise as welll....
@@DrawciaGleam02 YES! It definitely seemed that way because the characters I know would've been able to recognize there was an issue and rectify it immediately. Hell even the Beach City citizens would've been able to identify that Steven was fucked up

22:08 Also the fact that Rose told her she was perfect the way she is and her believing she is a usual Quartz like Jasper led to her training without her special advantages and disadvantages in mind. She believed she had to fight like a fully formed quartz soldier but neglected to look for the best way she can utilize her special situation.
While I concede this possibility to be true, she totally tormented Greg by wearing his dead wife's face.
Steven is better than I am because something like that would come with a strongly worded warning/death threat, Katara style, on her ever doing something like that again.

@@alexvaughan1013 to be fair, with envy that was the job, Hughes knew too much, and was loaded with more knives than batman.
With this it's worse, Greg was her friend going through some heavy shit, they both were. But yeah ANY of the subtext in that storage unit is not something I would want to touch with a 50-ft pole. There are several possibilities and all of them are terrible.
So yeah, best move is to pull my purple space sister aside and let her know, "If you ever mistreat that man again, you will cease to be."
Despite the issues she had Amethyst was a bit more grounded that the other gems and more human too so it made sense she became this older sister figure for Steven and connected with him better since all she knows is earth emotions, relationships and culture.
I'm impressed this is a full deep-dive into the character development of Amythest that didn't obsess about the 'turning into Rose' thing. I mean, that IS an important moment in the show, but at this point its been talked about to death.

I've noticed many people say "i used to dislike Amethyst, and really related to Pearl, but now I've really warmed up to her" - and I have a theory about that.
Teenagers relate to Pearl because they think they are being as logical and reasonable as they can given everything piled against them, stressing them out.
Then they grow up, and realize alot of what they thought was being logical was often just being selfish - their reasonable persona just deflecting from their real feelings with a transparent layer of false humor they protect themselves with.
Amethyst wants to be more like Pearl and hates being herself. The character can't lie to herself so easily, she knows she falls short - but teenagers are already masters of trying to fake it till they make it.
I think Amethyst goes from being something grating for teens into becoming comforting for adults. She is how they were - she is how they were scared to be seen by others as back then, and cringe at the thought of now - and yet she is still openly loved, accepted and understood. Which is exactly the thing they always feared wouldn't be the case.
That's not going to be the same for everyone - it wasn't for me - but its enough of a pattern to recognize, I think.
I really like Amethyst. Amethyst will always be the best gem. She deserves a spin off film with a female love interest
I hated Amethyst at the start of the show. She definitely grew on me as the show developed though. Garnet and Peridot are my favorites, but Amethyst has earned a special place in my heart.
one thing i wish they went into was how the amethyst interacted with people. they one bit we do see she mainly just shapeshift into other people to get stuff. but how does she really act. her room is filled to the bring with stuff but it less with care and more like a dump with stuff that she liked for a sec. while she may be from earth its clear she didn't click with humans. rather that was her or part of the bit with rose (she did have the temple closed off and such). like was that partly why she was so upset with greg cause the one person she could hang out and enjoy earth stuff with drifted apart.
I wondered why she hoarded all that stuff. Ariel's grotto is more tidy than that temple room! 😆

I've seen su not to lang ago. And as a physical disabled woman I wish I had a character like amethyst. When I watched su I felt less alone and understood. It honestly made me cry ngl. I wanna thank you for this video. It's nice to see something positive about amethyst💜 as I see a lot of hate for her.
My favorite Crystal Gem! I love how Steven's close, almost sibling bond with her is reflected by how she is the first gem he is able to fuse with, and also by how quickly he is able to restore her from Spinel's reset in the movie.
This show was really good it had it's flaws but that's the beauty of the show it was amazing story telling

Ah yes, good ol' Amethyst the favorite mischievous wildcard of the 2010's and truly have come so far. Some can relate, some with massive hardcore crushes, and even wasnt afirad to show off her true colours on the battlefield either. When ya truly meet her; she's not just any ordinary female comic relief who still fits right In with the Adventure Time/Regular Show crowd that roots gor but someone who may not make a big deal on not fitting In but whenever ya mention of her past of bein' a "mistake" and never asked to be made can truly cut someone deep but when Steven or even Pearl tries to comforts her you can show they still care about her no matter what, no one 3lse Os "perfect" as long as you get yo be yourself or do your best at life without no one else like Jasper debuting or belittling you just because your not the strongest compared to them.

She felt she lost an understanding and close friend in him when he was all she had after Rose, realistically speaking. It makes sense a bit. Of course, my response to someone grieving like that would've different. To be fair, they're all sulking at that point and I wouldn't be able to take any of that. Being surrounded by people like that would be stressful.
I mean after Garnet, she's the best....
i have adhd and autism along with other things so i know damn well how limited you can feel with "disabilities" so i feel as if i relate to amethyst on that level

i didnt find amethyst relatable, but i understand her value and struggle somewhat. Peridot is my favorite and she is probably the most relatable to me.
Ive always resonated a lot with Amathyst being an elder sibling. She grew volatile but with plenty of love and found family, despite having a rough start. Those rough starts bury deep and it was so validating and amazing to see her go from someone with so much confusion and pain from her past, like Steven, yet she still managaed to find that she knew who she was all along, it's just those active thoughts. Amathyst isnt stupid, but she doesnt default to thinking, especially about herself. Self-burying was 100 percent my coping mechanism as a child, that reforming episode hit me hard.
Trigger Warning for discussion about S.A.;
Amethyst’s line, “I never asked to be MADE,” had some pretty heavy connotations of her characterization being that of someone who’s the product of S.A., and the self-loathing that can be associated with that conclusion. Being adopted shortly after birth (now 22), I’ve asked my parents what my biological family was like, and from what they knew my bio-father was never in the picture. It’s made me assume that maybe I was the product of S.A., and by extension I’ve wondered if that played any part in my bio-mother putting me up for adoption.
Pearl’s response later to Amethyst when they start making up, “You’re the one good thing that came out of this mess. I always thought you were proud of that…”, REALLY f’d me up. Pearl likely told Amethyst bits and pieces of how and why the gem colonies formed, or she at least overheard Pearl & Garnet discussing it once, I imagine not in the best light. There’s also the imagery of the injectors on the Earth and harming it, a depiction used in a lot of media, meant to evoke the pain, lost security, and defiling of penetrative S.A. (Penetration has a lot of undertones most commonly in horror: ex. killers with metal blades hunting down women in very little clothing, the fear of imminent pain, jeopardy of life, death, or physical and mental scarring) She’d have then internalized everything negative that Pearl said about the colonization as also being an extension of her, and by that logic HER fault. Given my own experiences under the assumption I’m a product of S.A., I don’t think it’s that far-fetched to believe that’s part of the connotation with her character and these lines.
I do want to say to anyone else who thinks/knows they are a product of S.A., or has been S.A. themselves; you are NOT what happened to you or someone else. You are YOUR OWN person, and you’re in charge of only yourself. Treasure the life you have, and the story you will get-and DESERVE-to write.

Im sorry this is your experience, you are indeed more than the SA. Thank you for adding that perspective, I never thought of that. My mother was the result of a forced marrige and it has really resonated in my family, being a big part of generational trauma. I never connected the dots as in why amathyst’s dialogue in that scene felt so near and familiar. Thank you.
Honestly, Pearl is a personal favorite of mine. Sure Garnet is cool and I liked that Amethyst's character development, but Pearl is my favorite Gem character.
She has a lot going on and I can relate to her.
Rough housing with boundaries isn't bad. Well I only grew up with brothers and I guess that's just how we played lol. But we never took it too far the times we did was accidental but we apologized and so in and so forth
If you do ever discuss SU Future, I want to formally state I really did enjoy that arch of the show and found it wholesome and meaningful.

Pearl always got on under my skin during the show, mostly for the fact that she always sounded so condescending.
Whether it be about Amethyst, Greg's relationship with Rose or even Steven's opinions on things; she always made a rather stupid and offensive remark
It's the way she's voiced. Her voice always sounds condescending - I know people like that and they really don't mean to be. Same for aggression or dumbness - it's often the tone of the voice as well as the "melody" of speaking pattern.
Anyone listening to me for 5 secs knows I'm as straight as a ball.
@@astrisperspecto4130 She genuinely is condescending sometimes, though. Intentional or not, she's stuck her nose up at a few things in the past, but she has grown so much since the beginning, so she doesn't really do that anymore.
I get Greg's relationship with Rose somewhat.
Still confused on her bouts with Amethyst though. The show implies their bond only became frayed AFTER Rose's death.
I don't know why she is so many people's favorite character exactly because of that. She is just so rude and condescending and acts so full of herself, which does come from insecurity, but she consistently just completely disregards what everyone else wants and needs and tries to impose her ways on everyone and always acts like everybody else is "wrong". No wonder Amethyst has the self worth issues she does.

okay in all honesty, i love amethyst. i love how her character arc went and i really really like how this video even goes down to the very last detail of her development. but the only thing i disagree with is the whole thing with the famethyst. i like how it doesn't show us what amethyst did at the zoo because it's something that is amethyst's and amethyst's alone. she doesn't have to share it with anybody, not even the viewer. i love how she has something that she does all by herself and that she just sorta majorly healed off-screen and although it might not've been like the coolest thing to see, i really enjoyed it

Amethyst was my fave when it first came out but after rewatching (5000 times😂) I really grew to love Garnet, who I didn’t care for until I saw the whoooole picture and beyond.

OK this is me saying this prior to watching the whole video but I did watch the entire series and the fact was I feel like amethyst related to Steven the most, and the fact that they were both very childlike. So from that perspective yeah, amethyst would be the best crystal gem, because she understood Steven the best.

24:22 just to clear some things up. a legally blind person can be someone who can see with glasses. my mom is "legally blind" because of her prescription. she can drive if she has glasses/contacts in. that's why legally blind people can drive in some places because of cases like my mom's.
Amethyst is one of my favorite characters because her story was indirectly really similar to me and how I viewed myself for a long time. I have ADHD and the biggest struggle I faced growing up was feeling like I hated myself, it was a constant struggle of me comparing my own value to those around me and saying that I am less than others. Amethyst was relatable to me because her character arc was about what It feels like to resent yourself for something you can’t control. I always cry when Amethyst yells at Pearl in “The Runaways” because the biggest struggle I personally faced was resenting myself for what I can’t do because of being neurodivergent. I think it’s often forgotten that the struggle isn’t always external, as in someone is trying to change someone else but instead the struggle can be internal as in a person changes because they can’t see beauty in who they are. Neurodivergent people are often viewed as though their struggles only matter when they affect other people, but that isn’t true. The struggle is just as much about being able to accept who you are and learn to grow and adapt. For me my struggle was about a constant feeling of unworthiness because I by comparison to most people was incompetent, it’s about being able to say that it doesn’t matter whether or not you’re not perfect because you are enough as you are. Amethyst’s story for me embodies this message and so her speech really hits close to home.
Yesssss! I agree with so much of this. In a vacuum, Garnet is probably my favorite character. However, I skew towards Amethyst because I feel like she starts the show as one of the worst characters, and ends as one of the best. Her speech in What's Your Problem? is such an amazing capper to her character development.

Yeah Amethyst is probably my favorite of the main crystal gems. Its either her or garnet. (I'm a peridot stan)
I love Amathyst. I am an Autistic woman who has spent much of her life masking. A lot of people seem to say that they think Pearl symbolizes more Autistic features out of of all the gems but I think it is Amathyst! Look at how she "masks" both physically and mentally. She never lets her bad feelings show until she is so upset that she can't hold it in any more. She always wants everyone to think that she is strong and she is fine - even when she isn't. She even goes as far as to shape shift her appearance to appear to be stronger or "better" than she thinks she is. Amathyst knows what it is to feel like the outsider. She knows she does not belong on Earth but she does not belong on the home planet as well. She "fits in" better on Earth than the place she really should fit in - her home planet. She has accepted that she needs to do her own thing and that she is "different" for example she enjoys eating even though the other gems don't eat because they don't have to - Amathyst does because she enjoys food. It's her "thing" and she has other Earth "things" she likes video games, she knows more about pop culture things than the other gems. She has to find this balance of knowing she isn't what she is supposed to be. She knows she is "defective." and yeah, it hurts her to know that. She uses humor to try to detract from the fact that she knows she isn't what she is "supposed to be" I know as a Neurodivergent person I do this all the time! She hates the fact that she isn't the strongest gem of the group. She wants so badly to be as good at fighting as the others but yet sometimes she feels that even Steven who is only half gem is stronger than she is - and even though she loves him that makes her look down on herself. For anyone who has never had a physical or mental disability, let me tell you, it is so hard to see people you love easily getting through situations that are hard for you and it is beyond your control! You love them and you don't wish bad things on them ever - but it's hard not to look down on yourself when you see things you struggle with being no problem for them. I love her though because, even though she struggles with these things she constantly does her best. Whatever Amathyst does she literally puts everything she has into it. She wants to make others feel better. She wants to see other people laugh, she gets her self assurance by knowing that she can make others happy. It's a wonderful thing but, it is also a sad thing!
On a personal note I went through some major events in my life and it is only now that i look back and i can see how much I have grown. I recently was in a situation where I only had a very short amount of time to find a new apartment and had I not learned so many coping skills and really used my faith in God, and faith in myself and I did not have a break down and today I got the keys to my new place! I promised myself that once I moved and over came these hurdles I would get myself a new tattoo. Through much of this the character of Amathyst has been on my mind and I see how much I am like her. I decided that my reward is going to be an Amythyst tattoo. She came so far and she learned to accept help and to love herself for who she is. Even though I am in my 40s I am learning to do that. I can see the progress in myself and I can't wait to celebrate with an Amythyst tattoo! Thank you for doing a deep dive on her. She means so much and resonates so much with me.

My view was the exact opposite of kitty amethyst was the one I connected to I have similar behaviors and kinda look like her but taller and have "defects" in that I'm autistic... pearl just came off as patronizing and annoying and it wasn't until later seasons I cared about her

You described exactly what I like about Amethyst. All of SU characters are written to be relatable and flawed, but Amethyst is one of the most human ones, one of the most believable. I would watch a whole show centered on her. She's amazing.

I gotta disagree with you on "too far." Amethyst laughed at ehat peri said about the others, but i dont think she really believed the stuff peridot says personally. So she laughed, not taking it seriously. But she knows peridot does really think this, so when she "attacked" amethyst, amethyst took it super personally since she already judges herself and has been told by rose that she was perfect the way she is

i'm legally blind in my right eye & nearly just as blind in my left one. corrective lenses help as much as possible but i still have absolutely no depth perception & therefore will always have a blind spot. also i was born at 24 weeks old, weighed only 1 pound & 7 ounces. i am also struggling with depression and tons of anxiety. due to all of this, jobs [and a license] are out of my reach. can't get disability benefits yet [just was able to qualify last year]

This show has been done for how long now? I'm still having dreams where a new Diamond is revealed or some other crazy Diamond shit happens. It's really weird.
To this day I reject SU:Future as a proper sequel. It wanted too much and just dog piled on "Omg Rose soooooo bad!"

I liked this video a lot. But I really think you should've included the moment at the end of Maximum Capacity. I agree that it was her worst moment, but it's part of her story and she did grew up in that regard too, as we see in the Steven Universe Movie, when she has to turn into Rose again
