    AHH I love when people can discuss Rose/Pink's flaws without completely demonizing her character. she is very flawed, but that's what makes her interesting and I'm tired of pretending she's terrible xD! great analysis, gave me a whole new view of the episode!

      @@nyes4596 Idunno, my opinion of Rose is that she's super self centered and far from a role model... but also just completely lacks the ability for long term planning.
      Actually at this point I think it's less moral alignment thing and more some kind of LEGITIMATE mental health problem, like how Psychopaths suck at empathy and people with adhd tend to hyperfixate on random things.
      She just seams like she legitimately cannot imagine how her actions could negatively affect people in the long term (read, Spinel, the Diamonds, Bismuth, The Crystal Gemes, etc.), and absolutely sucks at forming any kind of plan that takes longer then an hour to form (see: The Diamond's retaliation, the fate of the actual rose quartz's, Bismuth [again], literally any gem artifact left alone and running amuck in the early seasons, and Lapiz.).
      She doesn't seam to plan on causing harm in any of these situations and also seams like she wants to fix some of her long standing issues, but she just cant fix them or see the issue.

      I think something that people fundamentally don't understand about roses character is that we see her ark in reverse, we see the best thing she's done first and then the worst thing she's done last leaving us with that bad taste our mouths, she started off basically just as bad as the other diamonds and ended as a benevolent slightly morally ambiguous leader, she can't be chocked up as simply good or bad because in reality she was always morally ambiguous as what was stated in this video, she always did what she wanted regardless of how other people felt or how morally good of an action it was

    Rose did a lot to change things for gems. She isn’t a bad person. But the personality and experience she gained from being a diamond resulted in a disregard for the emotional consequences of her actions, and hurt a lot of people she cared about in turn. Rose is still a product of a broken and oppressive system, and it does show.

    • @simonholmes841
      @simonholmes841 11 месяцев назад +12

      True. The difference is that instead of seeing a person molded into their roles, we see the shape of the roles and slowly watch the gems break out of them. Every gem begins as the most conforming, most dignified, most dutiful version of themselves, as if their hardlight bodies are projections of the expectations on them, that only changes as they develop new expectations for themselves.
      Considering Homeworld's worldview, in which duty and conformity and moral responsibility are the same, it takes someone willing to radically fail in their roles to make change. A gem more conscientious than Pink Diamond would have fulfilled her expectations to avoid hurting those she cares about. I love how everything that makes her what everyone needs in their lives is what makes her so destructive. It's poetic, and honestly relatable.

    Its over isn't it is one of the most powerful songs I've ever heard. Reminiscing on what could've been. Through so much of the series she practically tortures herself bc Rose is gone and she can't do anything about it. But bc of Greg she feels like she lost Rose before she was even gone. In the episode "3 gems and a baby" she literally tries to pull Stevens gem out to get rose back! She feels worthless without her bc she was MADE FOR ROSE. Pearl is easily my favorite character just in general

    Oh, my god.
    When you pointed out it's Rose's fault, I *immediately* thought back to Pink Pearl, aka Volleyball. I get the feeling that Rose only realized she hurt Pink Pearl because it was very visibly clear she did so, but as for our Pearl, I wonder if Rose didn't realize she also put Pearl through her own emotional turmoil because she didn't lash out at her as opposed to Pink Pearl.
    Or maybe Rose did notice and didn't want Pearl to suffer any longer but went about it the wrong way. I can see both happening [Note, I do wonder sometimes if a reason Rose chose Greg over Pearl because Rose might've not forgiven herself over what happened with Pink Pearl, especially since it seems that she never got a form of closure with that.], Rose is a Diamond and even if she covers it up, there will still be hints showing it: her fusion traits (Rainbow Quartz looks more like her diamond form), her powerset, the way she disregards emotions whether accidentally or otherwise (the Diamonds had a nasty habit of doing this, with Blue realizing it, likely due to being so caught up in her grieving but much like a abused sibling, got back into the loop until called out on it), being introduced to being a perfect individual but is flawed like anyone else (the other Diamonds were generally presented like this, with Peridot's idolizing over Yellow Diamond being a big example here), etc.
    I am someone who doesn't hate Rose/Pink Diamond, I can appreciate her realizing the Gem Colonies were wrong and she tried to do the right thing. Even if she fucked up in many ways, where it maybe her fault or circumstances prevented her from trying to fix/resolve them, Rose wasn't perfect but she tried to be a better person.

    This video got me thinking about, like, the lifespan difference between Pearl and Greg. Gems are practically immortal, so not only has Pearl been with Rose/Pink her entire existence, she's also looking down the barrel of an eternity without her. By comparison, Rose may have been with Greg for a decade or two, but he knew a time before her and knows the time after her is finite. Just, yeah, hit me heavy

    Episodes like this just have me in utter awe and love for this show. Here we have such intricate and heavy themes displayed in one episode, yet so many can relate too it. Both of you is one of my favorite songs from the show, it’s so beautiful. The fact that it seems like Steven is unaware with this fact that Greg and Pearl don’t get along (with the “and lets bring Pearl” and “don’t forget about mom!!😅😅”) but by the end we learn the entire reason he invited Pearl was for this whole discussion to happen, god so perfect. Great video!!

      As usual, Steven has to be the strongest one out of everyone he knows, shouldering immense emotional and psychological burdens because he'd rather take the weight than allow anyone else to suffer for his/Rose's choices (he is having trouble discerning whether he is actually Rose or not at this point)

    I have a sort of theory for this episode, which is not confirmed, but ever since I noticed it on a rewatch I can't get it out of my head: In Both of You, it kind of looks like Steven is using pink's aura power like when he does it to reveal himself to Blue and Yellow and against White in Change Your Mind. I came for the Fionna and Cake, but I stayed for the fabulous Steven Universe content (Your videos are never too long!). You've inspired me to rewatch the series with allot of new perspectives on themes and relationships. Also, I breathed a sigh of relief when you were able to discuss Pink/Rose in a fair and logical way, without making that section of the video about how she is the root of all evil and completely at fault for everyone's unhappiness. She wasn't the saint everyone made her out to be, but she was a loving being who tried as hard as she could to minimize the distructive footprint her ignorance and upbringing created on earth. I don't think the war ever really ended for Rose, and neither did the self-hatred for her part in events, or her inability to save countless gems on both sides. I'm sure there's a good measure of survivors guilt sprinkled in there too.

      @@ferretonahelmet The narrative choice to introduce Rose as this perfect, compassionate, goddess of a being that healed and protected others - literally worshipped by the Crystal Gems as martyr wiser then all of them. Only to subvert that entirely and show a very imperfect, selfish, emotional and morally gray character who lied and betrayed so many was fascinating. Plus, it makes it vastly more interesting for the characters present in the story to deal with her choices. Rose/PD was the catalyst for so very much in the story, although we only get fragments of her throughout.
      I think Rose ultimately is a very mixed bag, she's somewhat of a villian but could also be considered an anti-hero. I think she had some good intentions, but always executed them in the most clumsily ways, either intentionally or unintentionally being harmful to others. Her most geniune bits seem to be with Greg, but even that is sort of questionable too. In the end I think she felt she had done so much damage and felt so misplaced being created as a gem that being reborn into another being her son was the other way to redeem those wrongs and escape her haunted past.

    while i can definitely understand the viewpoint of relating over roses disregard for their feelings, i believe there's a "healthier" way to look at it. the way i see it is that theyre realizing theyre both in pain, grieving because they miss someone and theyre taking that pain out on each other. but then in the end they relate over their love for rose because thats the only reason why theyre in pain, because they love her and miss her. they know shes the type of person to do "what she wants" aka shes strong willed and passionate at best and sure, somewhat inconsiderate at worst. but these are all the things they *love* about her because well she wouldnt be her without her flaws. basically what im saying is, i understand and agree with your viewpoint, but i also believe that its a more limited scope of the full situation. we could focus on their pain and the fact that what rose did objectively hurt them, but i think its not only healthier, but more comprehensive overall to understand that that *is* what all people do, and we still love them at the end of the day, so its better for us to focus on that love and try to relate to those around us, understanding that its okay to feel pain etc. I feel like taking it only from your viewpoint limits us to focus on blame and pain, personally. thank you for the video i really enjoyed this!!!

    • @hunnydew_
      @hunnydew_ 2 месяца назад

      and to be very clear, im not saying we shouldnt acknowledge the disregard and the flaws rose has or that it excuses or justifies her mistakes!! i just dont think it should be the *focus*, not just for rose but for any person in any relationship. i guess i kinda like to view the whole rose thing through the same lens as if someone decided to die but like, not in a suicidal way. but it still kinda impacts their loved ones in that same way. you feel angry at them, and their actions did hurt you yes. but they are their own person and you love them, and you can understand why they chose to do what they did. and you can use that mindset to relate to those around you who also loved them. this is how i looked at greg and pearls interaction, idk if thats what was intended but yea lol. edited for typo

    I love this episode, the songs really punch you in the gut, especially It's Over Isn't It? because you can just FEEL Pearl's anguish. But I actually love this episode a lot because it highlights the fact that Steven himself is a child trying to help adults (and alien gems much older than humans) grapple with their emotional problems. Like.. Steven is awkwardly trying to make conversations happen because he doesn't understand the depth of Greg and Pearl's emotional damage from Rose's death. Steven's joke about "and mom" shows his lack of awareness of how uncomfortable others are with this aspect of his existence. And it just showcases that Steven is a child and the product of a new and unheard-of situation.
    Like the adults in his life don't know how to handle Steven, and Steven is always left picking up the pieces. And it's great that he is able to open the paths to communication for Greg and Pearl, but his attempts are so innocent. Like.. my boy Steven was really struggling to fix everything when none of it was his fault, he shouldn't've had to be responsible for the emotional wellbeing of these adults in his life. Like it's a condensed and smaller scale version of what Steven does and continues to do, thinking his whole purpose in life is to help others, even though Rose just wanted him to exist for the sake of existing.

    lovely video, but hard disagree on their ultimate takeaway being that they were mistreated by rose. Rose being free spirited and selfish are sides of the same coin that I think they have positive and negative feelings about. I think it's something they respected and admired about her as much as they were sometimes hurt by it. This reminder bonds them not as victims of her disregard for responsibility, but as people who knew and loved her, and it allows pearl to release her own questions and responsibilities about being left behind. She understands that it wasn't Greg's fault AND it wasn't HER fault - there was nothing she was lacking that led Rose to fall in love with someone else, she just did. This is part of why Greg is able to handle the grief a little better; to him, Rose has always been a little unknowable, and he just like watching her shine. Pearl was always very invested in understanding her better than anyone else. Remembering her this way with Greg helps her let go of that pressure and move on.
    It's not until the Future episode where pearl meets the original pink pearl that she's able to fully confront that Rose could have done something truly wrong.

    I dont think anyone in this episode is coming to the conclusion that its "Rose's fault" or that shes to blame for the relationship issues, just simply that Pearls discomfort and animosity towards Greg as the source of her problems is entirely misplaced. The show tends to be introspective a LOT and I feel like the line "She fell in love with you" is less about how Rose felt, and more about how Pearl felt. "Why cant I move on" is not only a statement about the logic of what shes experiencing but its being introspective about why Pearl herself cant move past it. In saying that she fell in love with Greg is because she DIDNT fall in love with Pearl. where they bond with "She always did what she wanted" was both of them not thinking about their own feelings or even the other ones feelings (Greg failing up to this point because hes so worried about what Pearl thinks), theyre finally bonding over their common love of this person. They were so worried about how Pearl felt with what SHE wanted, they both finally laugh that Rose did everything she wanted to do genuinely. Neither of them were going to move the needle on who she was going to end up with, because ROSE did what she wanted.

      I think Rose's identity as PD and how she treated spinel really shows how she views others, I think it's more like an engrained thing that a diamond can't really perceive others as "something"
      Rose literally says to Greg "You're awfully cute and I want to keep playing with you" she still viewed others as playmates, though she *did* have feelings and concerns for others, but she just couldn't have the same empathy for others. It's been said that Steven only has his empathy because of Greg's side, Rose lacks that empathy.. "I'm not..A person" because a diamond *can't* be like a person.
      It's really complicated, the reason why Rose wanted to become Steven is so complicated but it doesn't need to be explained, idk

    I get acknowledging that Rose/Pink was not a perfect person and hurt a lot of people. But is it really her fault that Pearl couldn’t move past her?
    Does Rose owe Pearl equal love and affection? This has always bothered me. Just because you love someone deeply and do a lot of stuff for them doesn’t mean you are owed something back. If someone doesn’t want to pursue a deeper relationship with you that is totally fine and their right to do. Yes it sucks, but you can’t control how someone feels or how their feelings change.
    If you think otherwise, you get into incel territory (“But I am perfect! Why won’t she love me? I’d be the perfect boyfriend/husband!” “Why won’t she just give us a chance!”)
    Maybe Rose should have sat Pearl down and been gently honest. “Pearl I really care for you, but am not romantically interested in you. I know you have deep feelings for me but I can never return them, I’m sorry.”
    Idk maybe Im forgetting some mad manipulation Rose pulled, or negative behavior she had towards Pearl and Greg. Just my two cents.

  • @mrrd4444
    @mrrd4444 Год назад +5

    Even now, I think you're being too hard on Rose. Not because she's not flawed, but because it seems really disturbing to say it's someone's "fault" for falling in love and making choices about her own life (such as having a child) simply because someone else (Pearl) has tied their personal fate to them (Rose). Like think about that for a second - someone treating a person's decision to fall in love and have a baby as some kind of political statement rather than an individual's personal choice. Rose's responsibility to others aside, imagine if someone told you you were being SELFISH for wanting to fall in love and have a child because of how it would affect OTHERS.
    Imagine if someone was in love with you, and you didn't feel the same, and that person's mental breakdown was somehow YOUR responsibility.
    From the very beginning, Rose has been trying to push Pearl into being her own person. Though as Pink, she started out believing Pearl was "hers", she would eventually be adamant about Pearl being her own person, for THOUSANDS of years she would repeat that message. So for her to either not notice that Pearl was extremely distraught by her relationship with Greg, or choose not to care, feels important for her. Because it signals that she starts to see herself as a Real Person, the way Greg sees her.
    And Real People are not expected to focus on how their own personal romantic relationships and bodily autonomy will affect others. But it's also clear that if Rose and Greg learned how to communicate as a couple, they definitely talked about having this child. Rose definitely communicated her concerns leaving Greg behind, and Greg definitely accepted that he would have to be a single dad. Because they TALKED. And just because we didn't see it doesn't mean it didn't happen.
    Rose was a flawed individual right up to her relationship with Greg, but the way audiences dehumanise her and don't see her as an individual, but as merely a catalyst for suffering, is honestly disturbing.

      One of the worst takes from this imaginable.
      “Imagine if someone’s breakdown was somehow your responsibility” only it KIND OF IS?? If you know someone feels this way, while you are not forced to return their feelings or date them, the least you could do is comfort them and be there for them, which later on for Pearl, Rose was not. 😂
      I’m going to rephrase your statement and say “Imagine knowing someone feels this way, but not caring at all and doing something totally different or even the opposite”
      You’d be shattered and broken. And it’s happened way too many times in my life. Other people matter too.

    • @sierraa.bryant9322
      @sierraa.bryant9322 11 месяцев назад

      Another thing: when two people are married, how that affects their families kiind of matters and requires a lot of thought, like you don’t just go into a marriage and then just say “all that matters is us”. The saying goes that when you marry someone, you marry their family. How you get along with them and others matters. Marriage is gonna suck if your partner’s mother can’t stand you, for example. It’s why people are so nervous meeting another’s parents. You can’t just disregard everyone else just because you love someone!!

    • @mrrd4444
      @mrrd4444 11 месяцев назад

      @@sierraa.bryant9322 When someone has feelings for you you don't return, you're not actually obligated to change your life around for them. Nobody believed in Pearl's independence stronger than Rose (at least before Steven came along) so she believed Pearl and the rest would be strong enough to go on without her.
      Rose TRUSTED her people. All of you seem not to and treat them like children.
      The sort of thinking that you're responsible for other ostensible adults beyond wanting them to be happy and safe is dangerous. If we are to assume Pearl is a person with the ability to make choices, then Rose pursuing a life with Greg isn't ABOUT her, just as you pursuing your own life isn't ABOUT the people who hate what makes you happy.
