I love the sounds of the birds every morning and I can sleep through the songs, thankfully birds in my area don’t begin singing until just as the sun starts to come up.
To me, Birdsongs are very soothing! Something about them being awake and singing so early in the morning soothes my soul and sends me back to sleep! BTW, we have some very LOUD birds out here in San Francisco, but I can't identify any of them! However, I know there is a wild nest of Parrots making their way across our neighborhood! I don't know what they're doing over here, in Noe Valley when their home is in North Beach, in the Northern part of the city, but a flock has made their way over in the South part of town and they chatter away in the afternoons as they fly over our houses! They are bright green Parrots and they're so beautiful!
Count Your Blessing they're screeching outside here in Pennsylvania 2 hours before the sun even starts to come up and it's more obnoxious than it is soothing

I never really thought about why they sang so early in the mornings. I just thought it was a natural thing for them to do. I've always enjoyed the sounds of birds singing. It never bothered me. It was always so soothing and peaceful. My favorite melody of all is the song of the Hermit Thrush. I could listen to it all day! This was a really great video. Thanks! 😊
Hi Lesley! Quite an interesting topic to ponder and the findings of the study cited does make sense to me. In contrast to the wee morning hours I had discovered that at a moment during late dusk or twilight the outdoors becomes deafening silent for almost a half an hour. I first became aware of this phenomenon when I used to live on a mountain top when I operated a forest fire lookout tower. Each evening around 8:30 to 8:45 (June-July-August) the woods would become absolutely silent. Sitting on my cabin porch listening to this transition was truly fascinating. Then about 9:15 to 9:30 the night creatures would come alive offering up a new and different chorus.

Sort of like saying, "Here I am. Where are you right now?" When they get calls back, they are reassured all is right with the world and that there were others of their species in the neighborhood. Yes in the daytime some of their calls are to say "I'm over here". Parrots will do that too. One of my parrots screeches when he sees a bird come to one of the feeders - I taught it to do that so I can put food out if feeders are empty. - Stephanie
I think the “Here I am” theory is quite good regarding bird singing in general. The question of why it needs to be so darn early however - the topic of this video - is more complex methinks. :)
My budgies do the same when they hear or see birds outside they fly to my windows and look out at them and screech trying to get their attention, it’s very cute
I have experienced this with multiple bird species calling to each other. Always there is one bird that calls out very early, almost still dark, then another bird calls back and then another bird calls and on and on. These birds are of different species by the sound of their calls. It's always like they are saying "I survived the night, who else survived the night". Different bird species can understand each other and care for each other. I also have a parrot, a rainbow lorikeet, and he talks to the outside birds and they talk back to him. I have also found that when a bird sings the sound is totally different than when a bird talks. The morning calls taper off after all the birds have had their say. One morning there was suddenly a deafening silence for about five minutes followed by many birds sounding very sad for a very long time; I suspect it was learned that a bird didn't survive the night.
Thank you for the information on early singing. My mother was a meadow lark and the rest of the family was night Owl's. She was the one chirping in the morning! We threw pillows at her!
As a young boy delivering newspapers at 4:30 to 5:30am, it was always cardinals. So loud, so early my son has complained of their racket. The first and last to my feeders...my cardinals. This year 2 regular males have gone through the molting process, and still look pretty sad.

I live in Australia! I’ve noticed that birdsong has faded... but since my community planted native plants in an empty lot we have been hearing magpies, lorikeets and much more! Please provide places for birds to live!🥰

I practice piano every Sunday around 3... the birds loveeeee the piano. Can hear it when they whistle.. They sound very happy. It feels like I get to talk to the birds 🙂
I've thought this myself when I play my banjo on the back porch. I feed then in fall and winter, so I think they are more relaxed around me vs strangers. Who knows?!

I agree that hearing the birds in the morning is soothing. It certainly is. It is like a special reward that the morning gives you. The sound of birds and the sound of certain Birds bring back specific distinct memories of waking up mornings in different places that I've lived. The one that comes to mind the most is my grandmother's. It is just wonderful how birds singing can bring back special times and places.
Such sweet birds! I don't care when I hear them! Keep a fan or a white noise machine in your room if you don't want to hear them! They are a sweet voice of nature that I truly love!
I love hearing birds first thing in the morning. My husband can't stand it, but I look forward to the times of year we can sleep with the windows open. Hearing birds gives me such a happy feeling. My grandfather raised homing pigeons and had bird feeders and houses everywhere, so i think they remind me of him.
A lovely video, Leslie! Growing up in London I used to moan about the very early morning blackbird alarm clock we had in the garden. Now, as a birder living in another European city, it’s a delight to hear them at 5am. They are one of my favourite singers. It always brings a smile to my face as I go back to sleep. I love your exclamation of the rehearsal whistles. Several several years ago I was having lunch outdoors my office and there was a noob it was a baby cardinal hardly any color did have a lot of feathers and he was practicing his notes. He successfully would get through note 12 and three and three would go really haywire. I sat there for the duration of my lunch listening to this bird practice he never did make it through the third note but I am thoroughly convinced he stayed there all day trying. It was absolutely delightful and I enjoyed my lunch a great deal.Stay safe everyone mask up
This is a great, very interesting video. The researcher’s hypothesis makes sense, especially given the results of their study. I wonder, also, if singing early in the morning helps get their song heard by more females due to less noise competition from other bird species that may tend to rise later, and perhaps by other, less fit members of their own species (later risers). In addition, sound travels better in cold temperatures and calm conditions (I know you mentioned less windy conditions), and, as we know, it is almost always colder in the early morning before the sun rises than later in the day.
Being a bird lover here in Australia, I liked the video as we visit Canada every few years. I've always loved the early bird calls, even if we probably have some of the loudest birds anywhere. We're so lucky with the sheer variety of bird species down here, especially the parrots. Our top morning call is the warbling magpie, with kookaburras & morning doves. Thankfully the screeching cockatoos don't start till sun up.
I enjoy hearing birdsong and the cooing of the mourning doves anytime of the day or night...but not the endless squawking of the crows. Lol Here in NY, the birds start singing at first light. In the Bible, it says that all creation praises God. I like to think that's the reason for bird's raising their voices.
These Lesley bird videos are consistently excellent. I live at 49 degrees north and in late June, the birds are singing their brains out shortly after 4 am. The robins especially start early. I don't mind sparrow song at that hour, but the robins are LOUD. Keep up the good work!
It always makes me happy to hear the birds singing when I wake up in the morning. For a couple of weeks in late spring, the mockingbirds kept us up at night They sang as early as 2 a.m. outside our window and kept going for hours.

I have just discovered your channel and subscribed and I'm only just a little ways through the video and I'm enjoying it. I just wanted to mention that I remember hearing that the reason that birds sing so early in the morning is that they are so happy and thankful to have made it through the night to morning. That they didn't freeze and that no predators got them etc. The poor sweet things are very vulnerable during the night especially.
Every time I hear Lesley say, “about”, it reminds me of that scene in the “South Park” movie. “It’s A-Boot.... It’s A-Boot...” LOL While I do get a chuckle out of her saying that, there’s something about the accent that intrigues me.
For many years now, eastern bluebirds sing from the apple tree near my bedroom window to be my spring and early summer alarm clock. In summer and fall the wrens, tiny singers with LOUD mouths take the bluebirds place. In these dark winter times I am up before the birds.

This is not a religious act as it is not a religious act to thank a fellow man that assists another with a task that costs him nothing. one thing i realized about birds was, when i was with one guy who was into religion and he liked to be surrounded by trees, that even in lands with four seasons they sounds like jungle when you close your eyes. this was quite surprising to me because i never noticed until then. when you close eyes and you are in some green place and birds sing there it sound like jungle. for me it is soothing sound.
early morning, fresh air, a cup of hot chocolate and these absolutely beautiful birdie songs... divine!! pure bliss.. helped a LOT with my anger and depression management i gladly admit.. :)

The coldest hours are early in the morning... of course singing warms them up. It takes more effort to sing (bellow loudly) than to hop or fly. Using more energy warms them up faster.
😂 my husband likes to sleep with the window open in the summer but day after day found himself jumping out if bed every 4am to slam down the window sash! grumbling *%#@# birds! ( robins are quit loud in the magnolia outside our window) as their predawn "wake up call" began. " Why do they have to get so chatty at such an ungodly hour of the morning!? the sun isn't even UP yet!" SLAM!
I work night shifts, went for a cigarette at 4am and its the most relaxing thing ever all these birds sings at the same time, for me personally I think they sing to celebrate their survival and another day to live the sounds they make is just wonderful 😊
The "warming up" hypotheses explains why birds sing for an extended period of time, but I don't see how it explains why they sing before dawn. Why do they need to reach their full signing ability right when the sun comes up? Anyways, it's still really interesting.

Oh I love 'em all but the starlings, tell them how it's Shakespeare's bird Lesley, btw my mom grew up and then retired in Halifax where she presently resides, and yes, has a feeder there, her older sister was up in L' Ardoise and was a great one for feeding the birds 🐦, even the starlings!
@slacquer, I read somewhere a long time ago that the ones singing in the middle of the night were males (young males, I believe) that had not found a mate yet and are trying to attract one!

Their singing is a gentle wake up call where I live in London - it's quite soothing.

My theory is that a couple of birds wake up and start chatting to each other, and then the other birds get annoyed and start saying SHUT UP

Such sweet birds! I don't care when I hear them! Keep a fan or a white noise machine in your room if you don't want to hear them! They are a sweet voice of nature that I truly love!

I love hearing birds first thing in the morning. My husband can't stand it, but I look forward to the times of year we can sleep with the windows open. Hearing birds gives me such a happy feeling. My grandfather raised homing pigeons and had bird feeders and houses everywhere, so i think they remind me of him.

Growing up in London I used to moan about the very early morning blackbird alarm clock we had in the garden. Now, as a birder living in another European city, it’s a delight to hear them at 5am. They are one of my favourite singers. It always brings a smile to my face as I go back to sleep. Regards from Spain.

I love your exclamation of the rehearsal whistles. Several several years ago I was having lunch outdoors my office and there was a noob it was a baby cardinal hardly any color did have a lot of feathers and he was practicing his notes. He successfully would get through note 12 and three and three would go really haywire. I sat there for the duration of my lunch listening to this bird practice he never did make it through the third note but I am thoroughly convinced he stayed there all day trying. It was absolutely delightful and I enjoyed my lunch a great deal.Stay safe everyone mask up

Sitting in the sun on grass in a nice deckchair listening to birds songs is one of the few joys of this world that is truly paradise.
This is a great, very interesting video. The researcher’s hypothesis makes sense, especially given the results of their study. I wonder, also, if singing early in the morning helps get their song heard by more females due to less noise competition from other bird species that may tend to rise later, and perhaps by other, less fit members of their own species (later risers). In addition, sound travels better in cold temperatures and calm conditions (I know you mentioned less windy conditions), and, as we know, it is almost always colder in the early morning before the sun rises than later in the day.
I think "Man" is much too loud for them, in the early a.m. hours, nowadays.

Being a bird lover here in Australia, I liked the video as we visit Canada every few years. I've always loved the early bird calls, even if we probably have some of the loudest birds anywhere. We're so lucky with the sheer variety of bird species down here, especially the parrots. Our top morning call is the warbling magpie, with kookaburras & morning doves. Thankfully the screeching cockatoos don't start till sun up.
Well, that explains the "rockin' robin"--an inhabitant of a courtyard tree in my condo complex, notorious for his 3AM blasts.
On those occasions I get to hear the Robbins early wake up here in Kansas. Ahhh 😌 what a lovely moment.
I enjoy hearing birdsong and the cooing of the mourning doves anytime of the day or night...but not the endless squawking of the crows. Lol Here in NY, the birds start singing at first light.
In the Bible, it says that all creation praises God. I like to think that's the reason for bird's raising their voices.

These Lesley bird videos are consistently excellent. I live at 49 degrees north and in late June, the birds are singing their brains out shortly after 4 am. The robins especially start early. I don't mind sparrow song at that hour, but the robins are LOUD. Keep up the good work!
It always makes me happy to hear the birds singing when I wake up in the morning. For a couple of weeks in late spring, the mockingbirds kept us up at night They sang as early as 2 a.m. outside our window and kept going for hours.
You are so lucky to have mockingbirds. I imagine that I'd be as fascinated with them as I am with Blue Jays

In the second edition of the book "ornithology" by Frank B. Gill, there's a really good chapter of how birds sing and why they're so freaking loud.

I have just discovered your channel and subscribed and I'm only just a little ways through the video and I'm enjoying it. I just wanted to mention that I remember hearing that the reason that birds sing so early in the morning is that they are so happy and thankful to have made it through the night to morning. That they didn't freeze and that no predators got them etc. The poor sweet things are very vulnerable during the night especially.

I know why they start singing so early in spring, so they can get my parrot up and screaming at 4:30 in turn to wake me up!
For many years now, eastern bluebirds sing from the apple tree near my bedroom window to be my spring and early summer alarm clock. In summer and fall the wrens, tiny singers with LOUD mouths take the bluebirds place. In these dark winter times I am up before the birds.

This is not a religious act as it is not a religious act to thank a fellow man that assists another with a task that costs him nothing. one thing i realized about birds was, when i was with one guy who was into religion and he liked to be surrounded by trees, that even in lands with four seasons they sounds like jungle when you close your eyes. this was quite surprising to me because i never noticed until then. when you close eyes and you are in some green place and birds sing there it sound like jungle. for me it is soothing sound.

The coldest hours are early in the morning... of course singing warms them up. It takes more effort to sing (bellow loudly) than to hop or fly. Using more energy warms them up faster.

We had mockingbirds that started at 3:00 am and went to late into the night!
This stirred childhood memories of Saturday mornings, early Spring. I loved waking to the songs.
😂 my husband likes to sleep with the window open in the summer but day after day found himself jumping out if bed every 4am to slam down the window sash! grumbling *%#@# birds! ( robins are quit loud in the magnolia outside our window) as their predawn "wake up call" began. " Why do they have to get so chatty at such an ungodly hour of the morning!? the sun isn't even UP yet!" SLAM!

I work night shifts, went for a cigarette at 4am and its the most relaxing thing ever all these birds sings at the same time, for me personally I think they sing to celebrate their survival and another day to live the sounds they make is just wonderful 😊
The "warming up" hypotheses explains why birds sing for an extended period of time, but I don't see how it explains why they sing before dawn. Why do they need to reach their full signing ability right when the sun comes up? Anyways, it's still really interesting.

@slacquer, I read somewhere a long time ago that the ones singing in the middle of the night were males (young males, I believe) that had not found a mate yet and are trying to attract one!

When I was working, I walked threw a park on the way to my office building. It was always dark. Those birds were chatting away. It kinda reminded me of my grandma. Always making sure every body was up and getting ready for the day.
