Broom kid wasn't meant to be a plot point, it was just something setting up how the resistance still had fighters in the most unlikley of places, which WAS paid off on in Episode 9 with the Dunkirk like ending.
The kid was just meant to show how anyone can have the force and not just the sacred lineage of skywalkers, which was the whole message of that movie, by showing that you do not need to be related to someone to still hold yourself to standards and to achieve your goals independently. This was then thrown out for Episode 9 because somehow people hated Rey not being related to anyone, the fandom killed Episode 9 with their stupid complaints that they ended up not even believing anymore 2 years later
The reason people hated rey not being related isn't for the fact of stating that anyone can posses the force it is completly possible for anyone to use the force with enough minichlorians this was not in anyway understated throughout the saga. The reason people were mad was because not only did anakin's lightsaber call to her but also she was very overpowered in the force which could only mean either a) she was concieved by the force to create balance which isn't very likely as someone namely luke already had this power or b) she was related to sombody with similar power. Through this most people then expect to have a relationship to explain why she could use a lightsaber for the first time and beat a master as well as doing advanced force tricks like reading minds.
