  • The Worst Investments I've Made In My 20s - Frugal Living
    In my frugal living journey, I've learned that some purchases can be bad investments even though I try to be conscious about what I bring into my life. I've realized there are things I don't buy anymore because they don't add value to my life after all. This realization has been a fundamental part of my self-care journey.
    Living a slow living minimalist lifestyle has helped me shift my perspective on consumerism. I now ask myself whether a purchase aligns with my values and brings genuine joy and energy to my life. If it doesn't, I reconsider buying it. By focusing on the essence of what truly matters to me, I've found that I can declutter not only my physical space but also my mental space, fostering a sense of calm and contentment that was previously elusive.
    In my pursuit of a frugal lifestyle, I've become more discerning about how I allocate my resources. I've discovered that while some items may seem appealing in the moment, they often lead to emotional clutter. Therefore, I now carefully consider my purchases, ensuring they contribute positively to my self-care journey and overall well-being. This intentional approach to spending money has not only saved me financially but has also enriched my life in ways that material possessions never could.

    My grandfather was born in 1920. Some of his best advice to me: “Remember, even bargains cost money.”

    For the electronics subject, in general, I have a few recommendations:
    - if you're looking for a phone, you can get a flagship from a year or two ago at a much lower price than the current mid ranged phones;
    - if you're using Android, especially on flagships, I highly recommend alternative ROMs. The most popular one is LineageOS, and it will improve your device's performance and lifespan. You'll be able to get security patches and updates years after the manufacturer dropped support. Their tutorials are making the whole process incredibly easy;
    - for laptops, more often than not, they can be brought back to a good life by replacing the old HDD with an SSD. This will make booting faster and a lot of other internal processes much faster, as well. Additionally, adding a new stick of RAM on the laptop will be much cheaper than buying a whole new laptop with better specs, and it will also improve the performance;
    - for laptops, you can replace the popular Windows operating system with Linux. Its most famous and easy to use distros include Ubuntu and Mint. An experience closer to Windows would be Kubuntu. Its using much less resources, and it will have the same benefit of improving the performance of your old laptop;

    Make all the poor investments you want in your twenties. You have decades of life to recover. It is when you make those same mistakes when you are older that spells trouble. I love your message. Blessings to you from Chicago. Steven

    I am so totally with you on all the things you mentioned. And BTW I learned them the same way you did. :-(

    Totally agree, it is so hard when plants die. Just like a friend you thought was going to be around for a long time giving you joy. :-)

    I love your videos! I’m naturally a maximalist who tends to get stuff I like and not really overthink it…I’ve noticed a lot of minimalist ideology has threads of perfectionism woven through. I love your simplifying mindset without a focus on being the “perfect” frugal person

    I've been lucky in regards to 2nd hand electronics. Mostly because I enjoy fixing things and tinkering.
    Sometimes, it is beyond my ability and frustrating... lol
