As a 24 year old, trying to rely less on technology and social media has been hard but I'm always inspired by readings of old classic tales and the simple pleasures of life. Thank you for helping me on that journey.

Just chiming in as another disenchanted with technology and the modern world. I'm finding my own different path but it feels a bit lonely going my own way sometimes although I'm happier and more fulfilled overall. Nice to hear others feeling similar. I'm making my own small sphere as much like a corner of LOTR world as I can. 😁 Love this channel. There was vid recently of visiting a place in Swiss Alps that inspired Tolkien that was so breathtaking I've added it to my travel bucket list to go hiking there. Inspirational.

Given how important food is to Hobbits, the line about Frodo and Sam not knowing whether their meal on the stairs would be the last meal they ever ate together is especially poignant. It's a small detail in a scene full of many great details, but it's such a nice touch. I don't believe I have ever made that connection before.

It’s the light inextinguishable amongst the seemingly impenetrable dark; earendil shining above the dark pass. Sam and Frodo strengthen themselves with their stories, and they strengthen thee story for us all. Beautiful.

You're exactly right, when a book is that good, you forget you're reading because you feel like a fly on the wall in the middle of the storyline. As others have pointed out, the fact this is a 16 minute video and yet it felt like only 4 minutes, shows how engrossed to the story I was. It's such a wonderful moment on the stairs. I may have to read these books again. It's been 20 years...

Oddly I did not read any Tolkien until my late teens and ,to my shame, never read The Silmarillion. I shall put that right this autumn. I also have always had a facination with the legend of Arthur so shall look forward to Malcolms books with great anticipation.

Wonderful read. I just finished The Two Towers myself for the first time. This passage bought me to tears. I think it serves very nicely as it not only gives hope to the reader that there is more to come as you have said. But it somehow gives hope to Frodo and Sam! it feels like we the readers are reaching out to them! like you said, we are screaming 'you are in one, it's all right!'. Such a powerful way to connect the reader to the story and some how although impossible, vice versa!. Great video, more Tolkien please!

Ah, Malcom, my friend, you are spot on. It is a blessing to encounter a kindred spirit anywhere in life but a particular joy in regards to the Legendarium and its associate myth makers (yourself included)! That passage is one of my favorites as well. Such a powerful exchange...there in the midst of the struggle, possibly represented by the stair--the search for meaning that never stops, and it's in stories that we find it. Truly. I find Frodo's observation that "people in" the great tales "come[ing] and go[ing] when their parts ended..." especially comforting. On a hard day I may be tempted to compare my life as a story to others' and find it wanting--not enough beauty, or love, or success, or whatever ingredient I erroneously believe is essential. But in truth, my life is an ingredient--the highs and the lows--to a "great tale," our tale of the kingdom now and coming in, and no one can play my particular part as I can. That's what matters...how I play my part with the "time..." I've "been given" (Ha-ha!)--the Legendarium keeps giving. As I've said before, I so look forward to your Matter of Britain. It will be just such a story. I know it! Cheers and thanks!

Funnily enough, I was just reading this passage when I saw your video pop up on my feed. It's wonderfully done and a moment of joy and light in an incredibly dark place, vividly painted by Tolkien in this and the previous chapter. The sense of foreboding is incredible and I like how this provides such a moment of levity and pureness of spirit to contrast with the darkness they are now within.
I agree completely with your analysis, although I also have to mention that the passage around the same time regarding Gollum/Smeagol's observation of the two Hobbits sleeping is perhaps one of my favourite bits.
It brings an unexpected moment of touching empathy with his character that I always feel so immensely sad reading, feeling a connection that he has towards them that you know he will never recapture, now a villain, as his story tragically plays out, yet with such a key part to play in the tale as well.
Such a wonderful and profound work of literature these books remain. Thank you for the reminder and for making these wonderful videos! Congratulations on your literary project as well, I am sure it will be a success :)

This passage is one of my favorites, and sets up what may be my favorite moment in the books. When Frodo and Sam are in the depths of Mordor, walking through the poisoned landscape, approaching Mt Doom; when it seems like death has become the only option, a small break forms in the black clouds to reveal a single star. I imagine it to be The star, the Silmaril shining through the window, a reminder to Sam that he is correct, they are within the great story, and what they do matters.

I've been slowly progressing through my read of The Lord of the Rings. I just finished The Two Towers a few nights ago. I cannot even begin to articulate the effect that these last few chapters of Frodo and Sam's sufferings have had on me. I am prone to dark and hopeless thinking. But the moments of beauty and fellowship and heroism that lie within these chapters are some of the most impactful pieces of literature I have ever read in my life. Your analysis has driven this even more home. Thank you, Malcolm. I can only describe my feelings towards my future reading of The Return of the King as both great anticipation and great dread.

This might be my new favorite Malcolm Guite video. Great passage to highlight and how beautiful of Tolkien to “break the fourth wall” a bit and ask the audience what type of stories are the ones “that matter”, in addition to being an incredible stakes-raising moment for the characters and for the story by reinforcing the looming, eminent danger. Brilliantly conveyed, Mr. Guite! ❤. Would love more vids on Tolkien - have you ever considered doing a breakdown of the differences between the film trilogy and books and what you might have included/removed? This was wonderful! I love your video presentations and the pleasure you help others find in passages! Curiously, Tolkien here takes a moment to do something that, in the hands of a less-skilled and imaginative, intuitive writer, might have made people see the construction of the fiction, a form of "breaking the fourth wall". But, instead, he acts with greatest subtlety, actually bringing one deeper into the moment, to be closer to the characters, who show that they are just like the reader, adding more of the concreteness of Tolkien's mythology, and, as you say, simultaneously, allowing the reader to consider that life is a continuous tale, of real people, who play their important roles for each other, then move on, having cleared a path for the rest. This was lovely! Thank you! I can't wait to read your upcoming volumes, and, by the way, I suppose others have mentioned this, but I want to let you know that you always remind me of Doctor Zaius, from the original "Planet of the Apes". You are not the grand, plotting nemesis in any way, but you have a look that brings forth memories of the learned Dr. Z, and that's a great thing! Take care! By the way, have you ever discussed ER Eddison's "Worm Ouroboros"? What a dazzling and colorful writer he was! All the best!

"Sam: Now Mr. Frodo, you shouldn't make fun; I was being serious. Frodo: So was I." One of my favorite moments in the trilogy. True friendship.

I've only read the lord of the rings once, but there's a scene that always stuck in my memory, it must be within several pages of this passage,
It's when sam gently cradles frodo whilst a sulking gollum watches in the corner. & For a moment gollum understands the humanity of sam, even though he is betraying the hobbits.
I can't quite remember how tolkein worded it, but it was quite beautiful to me 🙂

Thank you Sir Malcolm. As a writer of sorts and an artist and musician, who has fueled my life as a chef. I have been so fortunate to experience life from so many angles and descriptive perceptions. Being 55 now, I have been able to find time to step back, and listen to the greats of modern literature in expose of the greats or our past. You Sir, have been such an inspiration to all of what I have sought over the years. I have an art piece I would like to send you. I am a great lover of coffees from around the world. I did a fun series of multimedia paintings of LOTR themed "posters" revolving around coffee. My only wish is that you will mount it in one of your studies to see daily. God Bless you Sir. I will contact you via email with the details. Be well.

My favorite "in the story" moment is still the Ride of the Rohirrim. You can feel the dread and dispair that they feel, through Merry's perspective. But, it all changes in an instant. It's such a common theme in LotR. It's the spark of hope, that reignites the moment. And in this case, it's the comparison of Theoden of Rohan, a mortal man seemingly far removed from the greatness and longevity of his ancestors... to a Valar. And he's not just compared to any Valar. He's compared to Orome, the Hunter, who led the army of the Valar against Melkor "when the world was young". There's so much prose in that moment of the sun. Comparisons of his white horse, the "flaming" green beneath its hooves, his shield as he leads the charge. The sun, the last light of Laurelin the golden tree, which the servants of Morgoth and Sauron hate so much, came charging through Pellenor Fields in the form of a mortal king.
