Jay, thank you very much for this video. You present the information in a very accessible way. I find myself as a rookie in DIY PC Building. I got the rig together, and it's a very modest mid level build. Breaking down the concepts like you do really helps me to understand what I can and cannot do with my rig. It's an empowing feeling. Thanks for your hard work in sharing.
A sign of degradation is when you start having to bring down the frequency because your processor can't take it anymore, as it did before. That's exactly what I've been noticing with my i7-870 (1st gen). I used to be stable at turbo 4,3GHz, then 3,8GHz and now not even that. I'm stuck at default frequencies (3,5 turbo) if I want absolute stability. Nice video, it helped me understand this better.
I slid the slider all the way on afterburner on a 960 and everything turned bright. Really bright. like those gamma effects on ear rape videos kinda bright. I restarted my system, and everything was fine.
Yes, and you'll also be able to fry things on it, so it is a double win. Trust me. Just make sure you disable thermal related shutdown on your UEFI/BIOS, otherwise this will not work.
Thanks for the vid, Jay. I overclocked my case; it now has an extra 25 cubic centimeters of space, as well as a new tempered glass side panel and built in configurable LEDs.

FYI: I'm not subscribed. But, every time I need to learn something new to remove that noob fear from doing something new, you do a great job of explaining it all. I owe my new rig and specs to you. Just wanted to quickly give my thanks for another great explanatory video. :)
Interesting in this video there was no mention of data being lost when you overclock a CPU. That is honestly what I was expecting from this video. How accurate are computers when they are pushed beyond the limitations of Cache memory?
Jacob Walker what game do you play and do it run good? I ordered the same GPU and cpu. I expect to play bf1? the division,R6 and total war games on good FPS
Ballistus ive been regularly playing doom 2016 (about 2 and a half hours today) The Witcher 3, GTA V, Fallout 4, and Dragon Age Inquisition. and yes 'it do run good' lol.... i get 60fps in just about everything. although i had to drop fallout 4 down from 1080p to 1600x900p just so i could keep the settings i like and the framerate i want. but that's just because fallout is a shitty port. but like the witcher 3, doom, and gta v all run beautifully at 1080p maxed out (with hairworks turned off in the witcher) EDIT: i also plan on playing BF1 when it comes out, and eventually ill probably pick up the division just to see how i can run it
Overclocked my I7-920 back in 2009 from 2.66Ghz to 4.2Ghz which was considered a great feat. That CPU is still running at 4.2 and still working just fine. So, running it like this with almost a 60% OC sure didnt reduce its lifespan !!!
I rather not overclock because buying or updating a computer is a mayor purchase for me. I need to squeeze every single drop of life from my components.
that's not completely true. If you've looked at linus's channel, you'd see that they're making useless videos, because they've run out of ideas. Unfortunately, there aren't many new releases, and the gtx 1080 alone isn't enough to make consistently good content. It's better to look at something a little more basic and to go very deep into it to give people, especially beginners, an insight to what people are actually talk about.
I want to know if I described it right to my friend. My friend isn't tech savvy by a long shot, he's a guy that loves books but dosen't mind going on his pc once in a while. And I needed to describe overclocking for him and this is what I told him. "Overclocking is like your computer going super saiyan. It gets immensely more powerful and fast. But at the cost of an excessive amount of screaming and the risk of the body burning out"
I seem to recall having won the silicon lottery on an AMD Athlon XP 2200+ TB-A. Normally those cpus didn't overclock much, but mine seemed to have little trouble at a bus frequency of 151 mhz. Granted, I haven't used overclocking-ready motherboards for some time since, but still.
did my monitor crash? no? i have used 81hz for tens of hours now, ( i turn it on when i game) and have not had any issues, logically speaking the only thing overclokcing your monitor will do is decrease its life span just as the same as overclocking anything, your monitor will let you know know how much it can be overclocked, since you have to test your overclock and your if your monitor goes black(resets 20 seconds since you have to confirm the setting) then the Hz you put is too high, so you just have to find the highest Hz that your monitor still works on, on mine i can do 81Hz no problems, 82Hz the screen is black and cant see anything, but as i said since you have to confirm the change after you change it black screen will just go back in 20 seconds since u cant see anything to confirm it.
Hey man, I really like your way of explaining things! Even though I have watched only 3 of your videos but I really loved them and your style!! Thanks!
I prefer to use my pc with very little overclocks, because I usually leave my old cpus and gpus to my brother so he can use it for some years. I would say oc ing cpus are ok. but overclocking a gpu to the limit really hurts its lifespan.
+RagnarockonPC If it makes you feel any better I have a 8800GTS 512 (must be 8-10 years old now?) that was overclocked beyond what you could do out of the box with hardware volt mods and custom firmware and it still works to this day :) Likewise I had a TI4400 in a similar state (gawd knows how old that was) that I threw away a couple of years ago because it wasn't worth having anymore... but it still worked. I also had a 7600GT, again volt modded, that spent a good part of its useful life under a peltier with ridiculous OCs that I recently put in my friends Moms computer because her (non-overclocked) GPU died. Modern GPUs especially are boring IMO without at least firmware mods because they limit all the tweakable stuff to well within safe parameters.
+Sam B I had 2 8800gtx that I oc'd a fair amount and they were fast but the finally met there doom last year. One died and the other one went down about 4 months later.
yet another over clocking video that teaches us absolutely nothing about actually over clocking our components. I want to learn how to do it safely so teach us Jay!!
I overclocked my GPU and got a core overclock of +160MHz and a memory overclock of +500MHz. With an i5-8600k CPU and a 1050ti GPU I can now have a consistent 120-144Hz in GTAV.
I got my i5 9600k up to 5ghz tuning at a 75c temperature under load. It fixed the bottleneck for my rx 5700xt and got a really nice performance increase on games. My 5700xt didn’t overclock so well. I built an mitx tower and the gpu fans are really close to the bottom. I just left it as it is.. still a monster though! 👍
You don't see the effect of an overclock on a GPU until you use something that pushes the clock, like games and rendering software. The GPU can also get too hot to run higher than stock.
All I can really add to this is that it sure is nice to have a bit of reserved head room where you can down clock a bit to help ease component stress and aid longevity. longevity is critical in advanced missions of 10 years or more. Jay I'm thinking we will start to down size what hasn't been down sized and very soon. Jay I do like the red liquid yet I don't want black widow spiders attracted to my computer. I'm a full spectrum RGB type who wants octopus color change ability. I figure as ship captain you will find that relatable. lol
So I have a system that has an i5 4690k and I managaed to overclock mine to 4.4Ghz and then after 8 months or so I decided that I wanted to prolong the lifespan of it because i wasn't planning on upgrading anytime soon so I reverted it. Before this I had two of my RAM sticks fail witihn two years of building my PC. Back in October I had to replace my i5 with another one from ebay because my system was just constantly freezing after booting up and then in November my R7 370 failed. So I had just lost two Ram sticks, a CPU and a graphics card within the space of 3 years. I am so unlucky :( :( :(
The first ad I saw in a long time I agree with. Go and make an account on massdrop guys. Check in every 2-4 weeks and see what drops are active. You can get good prices on there!

I'd say amazon is the way to go. low prices and free two day shipping
+Jacob Orlando If you want extra low prices and don't need anything right away, Massdrop is good. Massdrop is not supposed to be an alternative to Amazon.
+Jacob Orlando I agree. I love amazon prime.
+Jacob Orlando I don't like Massdrop because I haven't seen anything that I'm interested in be at a lower price than what I can just get at a local store

Interesting in this video there was no mention of data being lost when you overclock a CPU. That is honestly what I was expecting from this video. How accurate are computers when they are pushed beyond the limitations of Cache memory?
i bought an i5 6600k and an msi gaming x 1060 6gb and i definitely plan on overclocking :)
Same here :) Let me know how it goes lol
Jacob Walker how Did IT go?
Havent done it yet, havent had time really to sit down and mess with it
Jacob Walker what game do you play and do it run good? I ordered the same GPU and cpu. I expect to play bf1? the division,R6 and total war games on good FPS
Ballistus ive been regularly playing doom 2016 (about 2 and a half hours today) The Witcher 3, GTA V, Fallout 4, and Dragon Age Inquisition. and yes 'it do run good' lol.... i get 60fps in just about everything. although i had to drop fallout 4 down from 1080p to 1600x900p just so i could keep the settings i like and the framerate i want. but that's just because fallout is a shitty port. but like the witcher 3, doom, and gta v all run beautifully at 1080p maxed out (with hairworks turned off in the witcher)
EDIT: i also plan on playing BF1 when it comes out, and eventually ill probably pick up the division just to see how i can run it
Overclocked my I7-920 back in 2009 from 2.66Ghz to 4.2Ghz which was considered a great feat. That CPU is still running at 4.2 and still working just fine. So, running it like this with almost a 60% OC sure didnt reduce its lifespan !!!

Overclocking is so fun, getting that extra little free bit of performance is just awesome
I rather not overclock because buying or updating a computer is a mayor purchase for me. I need to squeeze every single drop of life from my components.
I OVERCLOCKED my gtx 1080ti it almost died it made a sound I FREAKED
it was just the fans 😅
why the fuck do u oc 1080ti its already powerful
I will overclock radeon r7

Uhm.. I have overclocked my asus gtx 1080 Ti with gpu tweak II to 2025MHz, aaaaand i'm barely satisfied with that..
I just let it do its own thing and it gets up to just over 1900 MHz.
Hasn't Jay already made a lot of overclocking videos? Is it safe to say that Jay has run out of ideas?
Pls notice me Jay..
There's not much you can do with tech videos. And people are always asking about overclocking.
that's not completely true.
Thank you so much for making this video. It answered like a 100 questions of mine 👍
The Way You Said "BLOW UP YOUR PROCESSOR" x\
Over clock my cat
ok
REMEMBER cross the clock with your cat ofc.
Da fuck lmao
Jokes without punchlines are honestly funnier than normal ones
You should do it with the K skew, preferably a K-9. overclocking a C skew like an American shorthair could end badly.
I over clocked my cpu jus a bit and now I haven’t turned my computer on in a month now because I have to repair thanks to this vid.
I over clocked my watch now time go's faster?

I want to know if I described it right to my friend.
My friend isn't tech savvy by a long shot, he's a guy that loves books but dosen't mind going on his pc once in a while. And I needed to describe overclocking for him and this is what I told him.
"Overclocking is like your computer going super saiyan. It gets immensely more powerful and fast. But at the cost of an excessive amount of screaming and the risk of the body burning out"
I agree Jay. The world should just give it to us. With that being said, can I have Skunkworks?

I seem to recall having won the silicon lottery on an AMD Athlon XP 2200+ TB-A. Normally those cpus didn't overclock much, but mine seemed to have little trouble at a bus frequency of 151 mhz. Granted, I haven't used overclocking-ready motherboards for some time since, but still.
most people dont know, but you can overclock you monitor, i have 81hz on 60hz monitor :)
The Husky Family how did you do it? an d i heard if you do that you have a chance of fucking your pc up
Did it crashed or get issue's? pls respond
@@theBEASTisJJ and i cant find such a thing online even looking for it, when u find such a link pls do share.
did my monitor crash? no? i have used 81hz for tens of hours now, ( i turn it on when i game) and have not had any issues, logically speaking the only thing overclokcing your monitor will do is decrease its life span just as the same as overclocking anything, your monitor will let you know know how much it can be overclocked, since you have to test your overclock and your if your monitor goes black(resets 20 seconds since you have to confirm the setting) then the Hz you put is too high, so you just have to find the highest Hz that your monitor still works on, on mine i can do 81Hz no problems, 82Hz the screen is black and cant see anything, but as i said since you have to confirm the change after you change it black screen will just go back in 20 seconds since u cant see anything to confirm it.

Hey man, I really like your way of explaining things! Even though I have watched only 3 of your videos but I really loved them and your style!! Thanks!
there are a lot of folks who are no fans of overclocking.
then they can just skip this video
Get a waterloop then.
One died and the other one went down about 4 months later.
i just realized my chip is from this silicone lottery :D my i7 8700k is 5ghz oc with auto voltage and reaches 1.33v
HEXZ0R I wouldn’t use auto voltage. Usually it over volts it. That’s good but you may be able to go lower in volts to get cooler temps

This is sarcasm, right?
yet another over clocking video that teaches us absolutely nothing about actually over clocking our components. I want to learn how to do it safely so teach us Jay!!
Well, I learned a lot.
I overclocked my GPU and got a core overclock of +160MHz and a memory overclock of +500MHz. With an i5-8600k CPU and a 1050ti GPU I can now have a consistent 120-144Hz in GTAV.
Answer: 10:39
Life saver
I got my i5 9600k up to 5ghz tuning at a 75c temperature under load.
It fixed the bottleneck for my rx 5700xt and got a really nice performance increase on games.
My 5700xt didn’t overclock so well.
I built an mitx tower and the gpu fans are really close to the bottom. I just left it as it is.. still a monster though! 👍
I never OC anything. I just want a quiet, stable system that will last for years to come.

Well My gpu is fucked, When i try to overclock IT says display driver has crashed :)
Lottery loser. Don't worry, my old gpu lost as well. Couldn't push my 770 up by 10. Although the memory went up by 1 ghz....
I put an expensive clock on my gpu and nothing happened?
When doing it wrong gets real.
Wait..
get a watch you noob
Shabbir Khambatti
YOU ARENT USING DIAMOND CARBON FIBER INFUSED PASTE.
Linux is always the answer. According to all tech sites.
I figure as ship captain you will find that relatable. lol
I bought the HD 7970 because it was known to be a good overclocker. Couldn't even overclock by 100mhz -.-
I cant even overclock by 50mhz without putting the voltage on +100mV
So I have a system that has an i5 4690k and I managaed to overclock mine to 4.4Ghz and then after 8 months or so I decided that I wanted to prolong the lifespan of it because i wasn't planning on upgrading anytime soon so I reverted it. Before this I had two of my RAM sticks fail witihn two years of building my PC. Back in October I had to replace my i5 with another one from ebay because my system was just constantly freezing after booting up and then in November my R7 370 failed. So I had just lost two Ram sticks, a CPU and a graphics card within the space of 3 years. I am so unlucky :( :( :(
feel bad
Thank you for video, it made me to set some new aspects on overclocking!!
I HAVE A AMSTRAD CPC 464 THAT I SUCCESFULLY OVERCLOCKED TO 4.5MHZ
