In this video, Steven demonstrates the strengths and weaknesses of quad tracked guitars vs dual tracked guitars.
If you don't know what that means, when you record guitars you normally record a left and right guitar and pan them accordingly. Quad tracking guitars is where you record an additional left and right in order to make the tone that much thicker. There are some drawback to doing so if you're not careful so be sure to watch to the example at the end to see what happens.

I like double tracking where the guitars need to make space for something else, vocals or solos for example.
For parts where the guitars are the focus, I like to triple track, and the third track stays in the center at a lower volume. This is especially important to ensure that the guitars don't disappear in mono, but I think it sounds great in stereo too.

Im wrestling with this as well, and I find quad is best for thick parts where as fast tech parts just get muddy. Also when i quad track Ill put 1 track hard panned to each side then the last 2 will mix at around 40% so that there are parts that live somewhere in the middle. And when I only double track ill mix them at around 80%. I noticed in his mix he had everything hard panned and it makes it sound flatter like that

I usually quad track, with two tracks of a very lightly overdriven tone, and two tracks of massively saturated tone. The compound effect is a tone that at the same time sounds hugely fat but also has the dynamics of light distortion. I've had a lot of fun with that mix.

  • @TheMates1994
    @TheMates1994 5 лет назад +24

It depends. When all of the rhythm guitars are playing the exact same thing, dual tracking is enough. When one guitar plays variation of the riff played by second guitar (for example the same riff but higher, no matter if it's third, fifth or whole octave higher), the quad tracking may do wonders.

    • @TheRealStevenWard

No kidding. I've been debating this with myself for weeks. Quad tracking is frustrating most of the time, but with chorus sections etc it sounds better.
I've been playing around with panning.
    LEFT 1 - 100%
    LEFT 2 - around 80% at about 60% volume
    (Same for the right side)
Also tried different guitars on both sides
I'll prob stick to dual tracking (I'm a bassist first so my rhythm guitar playing isn't the tightest

I absolutely agree! Quad tracking can be super frustrating since it takes so much time to either practice or edit everything together. lol! I worked on an album of mine(hopefully I'll release it eventually. lol) and we tried to quad track everything. It was sooo painful. lol. I'm gonna go back and work on it again but I think I'll keep it dual tracked for the most part. 🤘🤘

What i do for quad trackin is record the guitar twice, duplicate each. Low pass 2 tracks and pan L/R and high pass 2 then pan L/R, take the low passed tracks and put em on one fader, and the hi pass tracks too, but a different fader. Then through out the song you can just automate the faders easily. And youll get a rich stereo sound with half the hassle.

I have a question that I haven’t been able to find a video for anywhere. Say I want my music to sound as impressive on phone as it would in headphones. Sometimes on phone, you can only hear one guitar out the bottom of the phone and one out the top if they are hard panned left and right. I feel like this defeats the purpose of double tracking guitars if one person say listens in only one headphone. They just aren’t getting the full effect of the riffs, especially if there other harmonies going on in the other ear. I want to make sure those are heard at all times.
What should I do? Only plan the guitars 90 percent of the way to the left and right so that there’s some of the sound in the other ear opposite of the pan?
Or have a 3 middle track guitar reenforcing the the sound?

    • @JordanT.Zacharias

How would you approach 2 different guitar parts, do you double track or quad track in each ear or do you make both parts stereo? I'm a noob, I like the thickness of the quad track but I would also like some separation between the 2 guitar parts. Thank you in advance for your help, oh, your Fortin Cali plugin is pretty sick!!!

quad tracking really only works if the guitarist is tight. If they don't play tight and consistent it will sound like sonic noise.

Do you guys play it 4 different times or just play for left and right pans once each and copy them in two more tracks at 80% left and 80% right respectively? I tried the latter and it sounds so bad like alien invasion sound that you get when you slow down a track on cubase. That breaking type of sound

Play 4 different times. That will add a more dynamic sound

If you duplicate the tracks, they just get louder. It doesn't work that way.

In the records things always sound epic, but in live things tend to be disappointing. Specially when is a small budget band. Live performance is the guillotine of many new artists.

Are solo guitars double or quad tracked? is that possible?

Depends on the type of solo , solo guitar usually goes center. Never seen solo's quad or double tracked , usually they are panned center.

@@metalheadblues John 5 double tracked all leads for "The Devil Knows My Name" album. Randy Rhoads double and triple-tracked a few of his solos.

    What about triple tracking?
Also, while quad tracking (100%L, 80%L & 80%R, 100%R), would you keep the brighter sounding guitar panned 100% and the darker/warmer guitar at 80% or vice versa?

Darker sounds more middle - keep the lower frequencies more central and higher frequencies can pan out... consider running the bus through a mono maker sub about 120-200 Hz - magic to clean up the low end (assuming you've not cut it!)

my 2 cents - make sure every track is a different type of guitar

Am I the only one who doesn't line quad tracked guitars? Dual is enough.
