We towed a 3.5 tonne camper caravan across namibia 3700 km. No highway here, just corrogation and sand dunes. We averaged 22km per 100km. Not bad considering we were on low range for about 200 km. The motor is a beast. We have done just over 50,000 km. Lets see how long this motor will last.
Maybe the 285's are the all round best tire size for the 2.8 engine- especially for bigger towing purposes. Every test you do shows its decently superior to the old v8 everywhere, especially since the 2.8 is factory tuned. Haven't seen any other videos of v8 vs 2.8 comparisons where a factory or tuned v8 is any better than this now. Totally agree that the sweet spot would be that v6 in the 79 so hopefully that does happen or maybe a common-rail 4.2 1hdfte . Great work keep the videos coming 👍
Excellent comparison 👏 so many sceptics out there on the reliability/longevity of these new motors. When the V8 first came out everyone squaked they can't be as good as the 6 cylinders, now the same people are saying the V8 is far superior. People have short memories. Let's let the motors prove themselves over the next 5 years
Good vid, i just towed 2.5t van 4000 kms from vic to WA via centre, 2.8 78 series, stock skinny 33" tyres did it easy, found haul mode best, awesome passing acceleration and averaged 14-15lt 100km. The haul mode is good but definitely doesnt like very low speeds, when you come down from 100 to near stop it doesn't like it. As a comparison how much is a 300 gr drive away? Is it worththe extra $, woild a 300 gx perform as well ? Cheers
Nice one and thanks heaps for sharing that info. 157k and no way would I have that over my 79 for my day to day driving off-roading or space for touring...
Our 300 was average on fuel until it had a couple or services through it Denny, seems to have levelled out. We are in Mudgee and get 10’s on the road and 15’s towing 3 ton. Give me a yell next time you’re in town
I'm calling it the auto vibration dance. Have made notes and found its 2nd gear around the 13km/h coasting and engine rpm is low. It feels like the valve body is trying to switch between gears 1 and 2 rapidly, putting it into manual 1st resolves issue
Since new I've noticed this. 10k service today. Has 12k on the clock. End of this month, I'll hit the 20k mark, towing camper in the outback if the rains hold off for some of the tracks. Permits all done.
Is there any point in having the airbags? Seems like the 4 leaf parabolics are great without them. I had airbags many years ago on a 79 and had to fit locking diffs because I lost wheel travel. I currently have 3 leaf TT parabolics on a Troopy and see no need for airbags, even with 220 kg on the towball. But airbags could be good inside the coils on your 300.
Great point Phil, so I fitted them to stock set up so I could tow Bullet around but yes maybe next time I tow ill leave them empty, see how it feels...
I thought the 4 bangers is better than the v8. lol but the power of the v6 of the 300 is exactly what the 70 needs? You had a v8 all you needed to do was the 8 speed auto which is available a small tune of the v8 and you have a better match than a low friction v6 with a 10speed. I don’t really understand all this. On my 2023 v8 get 12 litres per 100 hwy and 15 per 100 around town. Not really that bad. Anyway I’m watch you stuff and I f whit cha
You know you can remove all of it, right? Can you show any other diesel vehicle still in production without all this eco bullshit? That’s what i thought, usuall baseless nonsense…
Lord please the V6 in the Hilux and 70 one day 🙏
Toyota doesn’t care what you want. They’ll give you what they want. And I drive a Toyota myself. I just accept this.
The Toyota fairies are always listening..... Just like Siri..
100%

Cheers, thanks for taking the time to comment and agree 285s the best option for towing and fuel numbers
great comparison Denny, the 79 with the v6 and the auto would be the ultimate, i need one
Would be awesome....
Another well put together video. Thx

The 2.8 has been out 9 years already but the new 70 2.8 is superior
@seabee167 Yeah, the 2.8 has done some miles already, but there is still the mentality that smaller engine capacity is bad
I agree its different to drive over any Hilux 2.8 ive driven for some reason..
Yes short memories indeed, cheers for commenting, glad you enjoyed..

Spot on there
I have a 1GD ‘19 Prado and reckon I experience same

No one seems to have asked the question, I wonder if the 2.8 79 has the same diff ratios as the V8 79 and what bearing that has on the 2 in comparison
I did announce in very early episodes on the 4 banger, that info on my old computer, have to dig it out next time im up there

fck yes if that motor and box is in the 70 I would buy it instantly.
@@imopn would be the ultimate vehicle
Are there any issues with DPF, especially stop and go traffic?
None from these 2 but we a bit anal, if it wants to burn, we drive till its complete
Do you have a throttle controller on either ?
No both motors untouched..

Thanks for your reply and yes you do have a point and I did look into that option, prices skyrocketed for that mod too...
Cool Ep
Thanks Craig..
The 79 would be happier on 33" tyres. Better fuel consumption too I'd reckon.
100% I agree...
Two best Landcruisers???
Where is the 80?? Where’s the FJ55🤣
FJ55 are you mad, remember the one in Skippy...
Seriously you should have Tested against stock tyres on the 70 2.8 would have been a lot better PULL and FUEL ECONOMY 👎
I towed and had that video up ages ago... People won't run stock tyres and tow caravans around, this is what they want, videos on 285s and 315s....
80 series and 200 eat them up neither will be running by 300k kms too many emissions garbage in these new Toyotas
You know you can remove all of it, right? Can you show any other diesel vehicle still in production without all this eco bullshit? That’s what i thought, usuall baseless nonsense…
Hahaha
100% there Michael
What are you on about mate? These are not the best, the best Landcruiser ever made was the HDJ79 RV with the 1HD-FTE
