Why you SHOULDN'T wear a RING when working with BATTERIES

    This is a PSA. You should never wear a ring while working with batteries. Especially LiPo / LiFe / Li-Ion batteries. If two terminals touch the ring you will burn your finger. Even 18650 batteries can toast your fingers. The severity of the damage can range from a hot ring to the ring getting burned stuck to your bone.
    All that makes sense right? But is it really that bad? Lets connect a battery to a ring and stick it on a sausage.

    I saw this happen to a guy at the race track, he had a wrench in his hand and shorted across a car battery and his ring was in contact with the wrench. His finger looked a bit like the hot dog except there was bone showing Lots of smoke and lots of screaming. Everyone else in the pits took their rings off, myself included.

    Im glad you mentioned about cutting plugs off lipo batteries!, my mate needed a different plug on a battery( ordered the wrong battery and could'nt wait!) I asked him if he wanted me to do it as ive done some 'safely' before, or i could run him through how i do it, he stated he didnt need help, its simple.....its just a battery for a r/c toy!!, he burnt his hand, screwed up a pair of side cutters and nearly burnt his workshop down!!, those 14v batteries are legal thermo grenades when handled by fools!!lol!. Great vid David, more should know how dangerous these betteries are if not handled or worked on carefully. All the best matey!

    Some 50 years ago, my father accidently melted his wedding ring when tightening the wire onto a car battery; he caught it between the wrench and the other pole and the ring instantly turned white hot and melted. This was fortunate, as otherwise he would have lost his finger... The ring was lost.

    A great demonstration of the dangers of working with high voltage and/or current devices. I’ve witnessed two examples of this. One was a chap working on a high powered RF amplifier. His ring shorted across the base of a very large capacitor and more or less melted into his finger. The second was someone working on his car and his wristwatch made contact with the +Ve of the battery and the chassis. He now has a permanent brand of the wristwatch’s bracelet on his wrist.

    • @scottfirman
      @scottfirman 6 лет назад

      FlyQuad FPV Explain low voltage. A lithium battery packs as much punch as any car battery, messing with alternator voltage is talking 10,000 volts on a spark plug ,a lithium battery won't kill you as fast as a car ignition system would. Messing with electricity requires common sense and safety reguardless.

    • @donaldtrump5489
      @donaldtrump5489 6 лет назад

      RC Hobbyist Extreme everyone knows high voltage is dangerous. If not... Natural selection got ya or will. Not many realize the dangers of low voltage being discharged at high amps. It's the voltage that kills. 12v is considered low voltage. Your typical lipo in the 3s range is very close to a car battery in voltage, I have in fact started cars using both a 3s and 4s lipo. A dead short could cause the battery to explode, I have not seen that but I've heard stories.

  • @scottfirman

    I had to stop wearing my wedding ring for that reason. Working on a car ignition I accidentally hit my ring on a starter solenoid and fire works. I wonder how many guys have done what you did as far as cutting both wires on a battery changing ends. Good video! There is a video out of a guy whom left his charging cables hooked to a 6 cell battery with exposed banana clips. When he picked up the battery with the wires wrapped around the battery, the plugs touched in his palm. He ended up with a burn in his palm! Its posted for anyone to see. Batterys require a LOT of respect. Being careless by over charging can also result from bad things happening also. Its best to always, always test a battery with a known good meter. Never trust a wall wart charger to do a proper job at charging a battery. I personally wish they wouldnt even include them with RC equipment. If the company is willing to provide you with everything, at least provide a decent charging system.

    I soldered 16 li ion batteries (2 packs of 8 in parallel and both packs connected in series) and i used them to burn thing at school with the mechanical pencil lead. I also attached them to directly to a normal pencil and it caught a bit on fire. (a friend of mine was sent to the headteacher because he was shorting the battery, the funny thing about it is that in the note they wrote that he was shorting the batteries expelling dangerous gasses and risking an explosion)

    David - did you have the side cutters handy to break the circuit, in case you couldn't remove one of the wires? Should have had the LIPO in a safety bag, in case it blew up. Enough current to cause the wire insulation to catch fire, might have made the battery blow up. My buddy was charging a LIPO in his workshop, when it blew up & started a fire. Burned the carpet on the floor, & put little pin holes in all of the wings on his wing rack, from the hot bits of battery that flew through the air. Good thing he had a smoke alarm nearby, as he was upstairs when it began sounding the alarm. He learned the hard way...
