Scotty Kilmer Hey Scotty I do not no much about cars. I wanted to ask if you knew about 2005 Lincoln's LS's. I noticed that when I turn my key to start my car that I have a service light come on and my car starts shaking I just got a oil change and I have oil i was wondering if you could help me out there is suppose to be a reset button on the Ac to reset the oil life but I do not have one my car don't come with one the 2002 and up do but not my 2005. If you could help me with this problem I would greatly appreciate it. Also when I get going to about 45 to 50 speed the service light kick back on a drops my meter down and the car shakes again.
My car smells like gas in the morning when it is cold and when I turn on defroster. I had someone check it out and he couldn't find any leaks. I don't know what it is can you help?
Scotty Kilmer Awesome stuff I have a 04 Lexus is300; I replaced the canister assembly as I had the p0442 code and the gas cap Both items are Lexus genuine parts Now - I have no check engine light but there is gas odour from the gas cap area after I fill the tank: Could this be the rusty filler tube or the rubber joint between the filler tube and gas tank? Anything would help Thank you
Dude I am a certified mechanic for a very long time ..I sometimes sometimes get stumped once in a blue moon ..When I do I refer to your videos cause sometimes I skip the simple stuff and look for more complex issues ,but you are right there for me to remind me to step back and look at the simple stuff...I am sure you do the same thing as we all do ...Your videos are great ..Keep up the great work ..
A story and suggestion. I recently changed spark plugs and some other preventative maintenance in my 2014 Traverse. My wife came home from work one day saying she could smell gas in the car. I freaked out for a minute, afraid I messed up a fuel line somehow (even though I hadn't messed with the fuel system). I soon realized it had to be due to something I did. I started the car (ran fine) and smelled the tail pipe. No gas smell. It was only in the cabin and under the hood. I sniffed around under the hood, real close to the engine. I could smell gas only over one ignition coil, no where else. Turned out, I hadn't tightened down that one spark plug enough. It came loose way too easy. I compared that spark plug well with the one next to it. It had some residue in it. After snugging down that plug, smell went away. So, if you've recently changed plugs, a gas smell could be a loose plug.
Toyota Corolla 2012: As soon as i topup gas tank i smell the gas inside cabin for few seconds. After driving for about a minute it goes away. This only happens when i fill up more then half upuntil half there is none!!!
I came to this video due to a occasionally smelling gas / fuel from my 2006 Toyota Sienna. It seemed strongest just after filling up the tank and after starting the car in the morning. These comments are reassuring, but I’m still not sure if I should be concerned or not.
I have a 2017 Mercedes E300 I only get the exhaust smell when the car has been sitting for a day. After driving for about 15 minutes the smell goes away and is good the rest of the day, even when idling. Any advice? PS: I switch on recycle mode and it doesn’t smell regardless of heat or AC
I tried the final test, "Smelling the exhaust". Well it smelled so good, I passed out. Fortunate for me a neighbor was passing by and carried me to fresh air. The doctors say there isn't any permanent brain damage, but I don't remember seeing elephants floating on balloons before following your advice. I'm just kidding, love your video's.
we mechanics do not use the term "relay sensor", but relays are electronic and generally are separate parts that plug and unplug from their connectors often near the main fuse boxes.
Hi, I just wanted to take a second to thank you and all who do these videos. Your videos are very thorough and great for a novice like me. I'm sure many others either forget or are in a rush or just don't know how, but all appreciate. Wish you had shown the back wire and plug removal so I could have had a better idea of how much will be involved. These videos are important and a tremendous help, especially in this bad economy where a great majority of one time middle income Americans, now working poor are doing work they never would have thought of doing 20 years ago to save a few bucks.....Keep em coming!!!
Scotty, I had a gas tank replaced on my 1969 Ford Fairlane which caused gas vapor smells in the trunk and inside the car. I took it back to the shop and they admitted no problem. But I should have insisted on another gas tank to be installed instead of taking their word 41 years ago. They obviously installed a defective gas tank.
eclectic. I switch around. It was just rum as we went to the british virgin islands, often i try local beers, or really good wine. Nothing is worse than cheap wine.
yes, if the cam locks up inside the engine, the belt will then rip, and can damage all kinds of stuff inside the engine. Just depends on the car, it's shape, and whether it's worth putting another engine in. That, you have to decide
I don't like mechanics or trust mechanics. So when I first started watching Scotty Kilmer videos, I was skeptical. But after watching several of his videos and using some of his advice, I think he's a good guy.
Before I get ripped off, my car smells of gas in the cab when you open the door before it’s even been running. Checked codes at two different auto parts stores, no codes, none of the guys smelled gas under the hood or in the trunk, and no one had just put gas in recently. However, I’ve been told my catalytic converter is going bad. (Intermittently my check engine light is on/off and when on reads the catalytic converter) Engine just replaced a couple months ago on this 2002 Solara SE 4 cylinder. Can’t wait to move back to Knoxville with family and have some of that moonshine!😄 Thanks Scotty!
wheel cylinders have nothing to do with gas smells, but you can check em if you're worried. Freon is an odorless gas, you would not smell it leaking. Have the fuel lines and injectors under the hood checked for leaks.
Just wanted to say thank you for this vid. I watched this and ended up finding the leak on a fuel injector. Turned out to to be the O-Rings. Thanks for giving me some good troubleshooting starting points.

many things can do that, but generally either ignition coil problems or fuel injector problems on that model. Have the coils tested and pray it's just bad ignition coils.
The "Porsche" center piece I am nearly certain was virtually always an aftermarket part. Often dealer-installed, but in any case I believe there is not an official OEM version.
once it starts, you have to cut the old metal out and weld new in. Anything else is just temporary, like bondo, and it will continue rusting underneath and come off in a while
figure where the smell is coming from. If ONLY from the exhaust at the tail pipe, it's running too rich, often leaking fuel injectors do that. If it's under the hood, then something's leaking there. Like fuel injector lines or seals.
You have a problem with the EVAP vent system, often a bad evap cannister or purge valve. See that a lot on those. If you like my car help, be sure to watch my live car talk show every saturday morning at 10 AM CST on google events. I answer your car questions LIVE there. I'm going to hope for the best and say I'm smelling fumes from when my friend put gas in my car a day ago. I've never smelt this strong gas smell before.
a little bit won't hurt. as long as it's less than half a quart. Fuel filter should be on the frame under the truck on the drivers side, crawl under there.
I have a 1999 Golf GLS I am experiencing a gas smell from the car . The check engine light is on for example when I pump gas the car has a hard time turning on . But eventually it turns on after 2 trys I am not familiar with this smell what could be the cause? Thank you .
many things can do that, do my video "how to tell if your head gasket is blown" and if it is, big money rebuilding the engine. If not, try cleaning the fuel injectors.
i get a strong gas smell and im getting frustrated on where its coming from. blah fords haha jk but seriously we are stumped. gonna try checking out fuel injectors in case they are constantly spraying while ignition is off
My car had a gas leak for awhile it is quite a risk because gas is very flammable. Turns out it was a crack in the gas line connected to the fuel pump. Had to have the gas line and the fuel pump replaced. Almost $500
Also everytime I hit the gas, fuel was spraying out on the ground out of the faulty gas line, but only when I hit the gas so there was never a leak on the ground when the car was sitting. It reaked of gas when I got out of the car though
depends if it's an automatic or a standard. If a standard, the synchros are wearing out. If an automatic, it's wearing out but you could try changing filter and fluid and add a quart of lucas oil additive.
Than crawl back to your car and smell the exhaust. And if it smells like gasoline, the engine isn't running right and you have to figure that whol scenario out! :D :D
find the leaking area and fix it. those are notorious for going up in flames with gas leaks. If you like my car help, be sure to watch my live car talk show every saturday morning at 10 AM CST on google events. Just go to my scotty kilmer channel on youtube saturday morning at 10, and click on the google plus icon on the top right corner. That takes you to the event where you can ask me questions Live. You do have to be a member of google plus, but that's free
of course do all these tests first, so see if you have a liquid leak you can see, or a gas vapor smell you can only smell. If smell, check the charcoal cannister of the evap system, they often do that. And strangely enough, just try a new gas cap first, they are cheap and can do that.
I realize this is an old post, but since I just read it and many others probably will yet, it's because Scotty said he's mostly deaf and wants to hear himself, caused by loud cars/machinery, rock & roll, and shooting guns.
Hi I have 2006 Honda civic ex and I smell gas I change the gas cap but still smell like it what can it be please help I'm a single woman but I can dix simple stuff like that lol
It might be a leaking o ring on the injector that seals it up,also check the fuel rails because it might be a loose connection,or like scotty said,a leaking evap canister in the engine,on some makes and models its near the master brake fluid cylinder near the firewall
many things can go wrong in an overhaul, but rpms have to do with transmission, not engine itself. If it goes too high rpms at a low speed, it's not shifting right or the gears or rear end have been messed with
drive shafts that are worn can do that, but more often it's an alignment problem from worn front end part like ball joints. See a better front end man to check it out
they don't sell fiats here, so i don't know about the filter. change the oil and filter, and pray it goes away. if not, fuel is leaking into the engine somehow, like weak injectors or fuel pressure regulator leaking
do not disconnect it while running, it ruins computer electronics. type "filling your car's AC with refrigerant' on the search engine on the opening scottykilmer page on youtube for the ac
Thank you for driving that stang the way cars were meant to be driven, braking hard and stuff because at the end of the day this is a toy, I just really enjoy that part!
I've watched dozens of your videos and "hey, start off with a tune up and pray!" got to be one of your top three advise ever :D also you can just answer every car repair question with that as well haha
THANK YOU. 2002 Civic. could smell the gas a mile away and the car was throwing an evap code. Had no idea where to start. ended up washing out the gas cap, lubing up the gasket and cleaning the seat where the gas cap sits. no problem after that!
Also....not only does the gas cap keep the fumes in, it keeps the fuel system pressurized. That's why you shouldn't leave your vehicle running while pumping gas because on alot of cars 2000 and newer, the vehicle will almost shut off once the gas cap is taken off.

when cold, they will tend to run rich when starting up, so you smell it coming out the exhaust when you back up. Even my toyotas do that in the winter
Toyota Corolla 2012: As soon as i topup gas tank i smell the gas inside cabin for few seconds. After driving for about a minute it goes away. This only happens when i fill up more then half upuntil half there is none!!!

I smell gas fumes in my car only after filling up with a full tank.
Mine does it all the time even when warm and you can smell it best when ac is on

soo thats why sckotty is soo crazy sometimes. hes smelt to many exhaust fumes lol
Along with that moonshine. LOL!
JamesJ30t you took the words out of my mouth. I was just going to comment re: moonshine x)
Lol
first check for leaking valve cover gaskets, they often leak on the exhaust and you smell it inside with the heater on
Scott smelling tail pipes and sipping on moon shine got 2 love it 🤣😂 a bad 02 sensor can cause gas smell also
Bad how? Leaking or defective, I replace that one and still have "Lean" notice.

Sad, but true. I tell it like it is. first car I ever owned was german, and I learn fast, never had another one.
Scotty puts a smile on your face right when you need it.

old age and cold often means an evap system vent problem, so you smell fuel vapor but will never see actual gasoline leaking anywhere
Scotty, I had a gas tank replaced on my 1969 Ford Fairlane which caused gas vapor smells in the trunk and inside the car. I took it back to the shop and they admitted no problem. But I should have insisted on another gas tank to be installed instead of taking their word 41 years ago. They obviously installed a defective gas tank.

front of the engine behind the middle of the fan belt pulley, get a new one and it's easy to match it up
Scotty you do a great service, keep it up. I worked in the automotive industry for 25 years, and it's taboo to shown anyone how to do a simple job.
I don't like mechanics or trust mechanics. So when I first started watching Scotty Kilmer videos, I was skeptical. But after watching several of his videos and using some of his advice, I think he's a good guy.
Another case of brilliant engineering lol!
He kills me when he says that! LOL

check for gas leaks as in this video, and also try "how to clean fuel injectors on your car"
Found out i got a hole in my gas tank. Its smokin black and running rich 🤦♂️
wheel cylinders have nothing to do with gas smells, but you can check em if you're worried. Freon is an odorless gas, you would not smell it leaking. Have the fuel lines and injectors under the hood checked for leaks.
"Start with the tune up and pray" hahaha
I thought modern cars didn't require tune ups? So what do you do if you smell raw gas at exhaust?
distirbutors go bad all the time, check that first. if not, replace the fuel pump after changing the fuel filter
I've been to the upper penninsula there in Michigan, Beautiful country for sure, at least in the summer. Great custard too.
That's where i'm from! And i'm your biggest fan. 😁
I live in lower Michigan, summer is great, but the winter isn’t lol.
I think he enjoys smelling that exhaust, probably hotboxes his garage once in a while with a jar of moonshine.
You paint a vivid picture
Wesley Kleveter 🤣
Lmao😄
REV UP YOUR ENGINES 😤
How do you hotbox a garage with a jug of moonshine? Do you pour the moonshine into a pot over a portable propane grill? Do tell.
I love this guy. You should have a TV show.
Manuel Giuliano Rios he does we're watching on RUclips right now
He does . It’s called the Scotty Kilmer Channel . And if you have any questions he will answer them as soon as he is done sniffing exhaust fumes
He did have a show
That would be great his own TV shows he could call it...
things everybody already knows
Nah this ain't the gas my car smell like
+Kyle You have that problem too, huh.......
+Stan Patterson yea bro
same I cant figure out why it smells so dank
Kyle lol,too many people have popped one in ur car after eating tacos huh?
Hahahaha
"Just lay on the ground and take a big whiff of that exhaust! " ...LOL This guy is funny
a car that runs too rich does that. Leaking fuel injectors, bad MAF sensor, or bad fuel pressure regulator are common problems.
I found the solution, I bought a diesel. I've had no gasoline smell since then
Yeah but how do you get rid of the diesel smell?
You get a petrol car.
but diesel smells like hell
Diesel smell is just worse and as prone to give you cancer!
yep
often a bad EVAP system, it vents only gas vapor so you never see leaks. check the charcoal cannister first for smell around it
Just wanted to say thank you for this vid. I watched this and ended up finding the leak on a fuel injector. Turned out to to be the O-Rings. Thanks for giving me some good troubleshooting starting points.

often a bad distributor on those, do my tests "fixing a car that cranks but doesn't start up" and if you lose spark, replace the dist.
Thanks for taking the time to make these videos.
+Frank Collins thanks for watching!
many things can do that, but generally either ignition coil problems or fuel injector problems on that model. Have the coils tested and pray it's just bad ignition coils.
I wonder which designer on the Porsche decided to put Porsche on the taillight and put Porsche again underneath the taillight
A guy who reeally liked porsche.
No such word exists in American English. But in German, he obviously got Porschenated.
The "Porsche" center piece I am nearly certain was virtually always an aftermarket part. Often dealer-installed, but in any case I believe there is not an official OEM version.
Its aftermarket part, I dont like it, I never put that on mine.
There it is again on the spoiler. Porscheporscheporsche. What are you driving again?
once it starts, you have to cut the old metal out and weld new in. Anything else is just temporary, like bondo, and it will continue rusting underneath and come off in a while
you have to ask it, and I have no hangover, everything in moderation
figure where the smell is coming from. If ONLY from the exhaust at the tail pipe, it's running too rich, often leaking fuel injectors do that. If it's under the hood, then something's leaking there. Like fuel injector lines or seals.
Scotty, I don't smell gasoline even when my engine's on, only when I turn on the AC. What would be the diagnoses of that?
I had this problem in my ranger after watching this video the smell magically went away,ur the best!!
many things can do that, see my video "how to fix an overheating car"
You have a problem with the EVAP vent system, often a bad evap cannister or purge valve. See that a lot on those. this channel is 10yrs already and i am recently follow this man
I'm going to hope for the best and say I'm smelling fumes from when my friend put gas in my car a day ago. I've never smelt this strong gas smell before.
Cher0kee What grade of gas your car holds?
@@rlpatrick404 My truck is smelling strong of gas or fuel out of the tailpipe it uses unleaded. It runs fine though. Should i be concerned?
I must say these old intros are wayyyyyy better. Love the channel
Thanks
a little bit won't hurt. as long as it's less than half a quart. Fuel filter should be on the frame under the truck on the drivers side, crawl under there.
imagine watching this in 3D, you would be dodging spit droplets every 3 seconds
an engine that runs rich will have oil that smells like gasoline. So fix that first, often leaking fuel injectors will do that.
lol put your nose on the exhaust smell the fumes ! :)
have the evap system checked out, often a bad charcoal cannister leaks vapor fumes and you will only smell em ,not see em
Or the "previous" owner accidentally put a drill bit through the tank while drilling in the trunk.... lol
Collin Huebler I think I just fell victim to this by drilling 😩
That”s what my gas smell was: a rusted gas tank, on the top. I just stopped filling the tank!
it's running rich , so you have to find out why. Leaking fuel injectors or bad main computer are the number one problems that model tends to have.
I have a 1999 Golf GLS I am experiencing a gas smell from the car . The check engine light is on for example when I pump gas the car has a hard time turning on . But eventually it turns on after 2 trys I am not familiar with this smell what could be the cause? Thank you .
+Alan Ramirez first, get it scanned, often the code will give the problem area for the smell. e mail the code here
Alan Ramirez 0no
Alan Ramirez
Those cars you just have to throw away when the check engine light comes on because to fix them is almost impossible
Alan Ramirez fuel damper or fuel regulator. Same thing is happening with my 300zx
many things can do that, do my video "how to tell if your head gasket is blown" and if it is, big money rebuilding the engine. If not, try cleaning the fuel injectors.
Breathing exhaust fumes and drinking moonshine - that's not in the USDA health book I read
haha then you chose the wrong author, he wasn't a mechanic :D
Yes, just make sure you get the right dye for the right application, they make many different ones.
How dangerous is it to drive your car when you smell gas? What are the chances that it will catch on fire or blow up? Does anybody know?
Thank you for your response. I stopped driving it about a month ago just because it made me very nervous to take a risk of burning up.
Thank you, you're so nice!
i get a strong gas smell and im getting frustrated on where its coming from. blah fords haha jk but seriously we are stumped. gonna try checking out fuel injectors in case they are constantly spraying while ignition is off

If you don't have a Porsche how do you check this stuff on a poor mans car.
I'm just kidding, please don't take me seriously.
Nah, most all of us would get it, a good one!!
it's actually inside the intake manifold, nutty design on that one. you have to remove the manifold to access it
Than crawl back to your car and smell the exhaust.
I smell moonshine. 🥃
of course do all these tests first, so see if you have a liquid leak you can see, or a gas vapor smell you can only smell. If smell, check the charcoal cannister of the evap system, they often do that. And strangely enough, just try a new gas cap first, they are cheap and can do that.
Why are you hollering? lol
I realize this is an old post, but since I just read it and many others probably will yet, it's because Scotty said he's mostly deaf and wants to hear himself, caused by loud cars/machinery, rock & roll, and shooting guns.
Because rev up ur engine!
no, you have an evap system failure, like a bad vent valve or bad charcoal cannister or pinched vent hose.
Hi I have 2006 Honda civic ex and I smell gas I change the gas cap but still smell like it what can it be please help I'm a single woman but I can dix simple stuff like that lol
+Ana Placeres do all the test in this video, and realize it's often a leaking evap cannister on that model
It might be a leaking o ring on the injector that seals it up,also check the fuel rails because it might be a loose connection,or like scotty said,a leaking evap canister in the engine,on some makes and models its near the master brake fluid cylinder near the firewall
Scotty Kilmer what about for a 94 corolla?
many things can go wrong in an overhaul, but rpms have to do with transmission, not engine itself. If it goes too high rpms at a low speed, it's not shifting right or the gears or rear end have been messed with
I smell gas fumes while driving my car, but it’s because I farted!
the celica was used for the charcoal cannister, as the porsche has it hidden on top of the gas tank and I'm not taking that off for one shot.
my son's a screaming eagle, he lives in Clarksville. Nice place, lots of trees.
replace the fuel pressure regulator.
drive shafts that are worn can do that, but more often it's an alignment problem from worn front end part like ball joints. See a better front end man to check it out
jack it up, run it and look. Last time I fixed on that old all the hoses near the fuel pump back there were rotten and seeping, I had to change em all
they don't sell fiats here, so i don't know about the filter. change the oil and filter, and pray it goes away. if not, fuel is leaking into the engine somehow, like weak injectors or fuel pressure regulator leaking
if you don't smell gas when it's lower, it won't hurt anything. Just look up there to see if any is dripping, drips you have to fix
just replace the cap, cause if not that, often an evap problem and they can be hell to diagnose and repair
Thank you. I found the reason my tahoe was smelling of gas; it was a faulty fuel pressure regulator... Thanks again!!!
heater core leaking would smell like coolant. If you smell gas, it's just sucking gas smell smell from under the hood where it's actually lekaing
Scotty is the man. Period
check the passenger side for leaking injectors first.
tons of things can do that, start with checking spark plugs and fuel filter.
if it has no gas pressure at the fuel injectors, then there is a restriction, like bent fuel line or bad fuel pressure regulator
do not disconnect it while running, it ruins computer electronics. type "filling your car's AC with refrigerant' on the search engine on the opening scottykilmer page on youtube for the ac
Thank you for driving that stang the way cars were meant to be driven, braking hard and stuff because at the end of the day this is a toy, I just really enjoy that part!
I've watched dozens of your videos and "hey, start off with a tune up and pray!" got to be one of your top three advise ever :D also you can just answer every car repair question with that as well haha
that moonshine part was the best...Epic!
THANK YOU. 2002 Civic. could smell the gas a mile away and the car was throwing an evap code. Had no idea where to start. ended up washing out the gas cap, lubing up the gasket and cleaning the seat where the gas cap sits. no problem after that!
often heater cores do that, they leak small amounts inside the dash which you then smell
Also....not only does the gas cap keep the fumes in, it keeps the fuel system pressurized. That's why you shouldn't leave your vehicle running while pumping gas because on alot of cars 2000 and newer, the vehicle will almost shut off once the gas cap is taken off.
