Nice update Ern. Having retired after 40yrs from a legacy carrier January 2023 at 65 I fell into that odd group who aimed all our retirement plans at the mandatory 60 so the last 5 years of my career was 'gravey' $$$$. I always liked putting on the uniform in the morning, but probably the last 3 years of my career I liked taking it off too. When career flying becomes 'just another runway, just another hotel' and I described my FO's as "JAWS" (Just Another White Shirt) it was time. Now I fly where I like, when I like in my own plane and just smile when a taxing airbus or Boeing looks down from on-high. It will be interesting to see how long the ATC pipeline will take to staff-up, that isn't a 'plug-n-play' thing.
Hey Ern! These news updates are absolutely VITAL for newer pilots especially. The community craves these kind of updates thanks for this! Keep these coming!
Went from Chief Pilot/check airman of a mid sized charter company in the northeast to becoming DEC of a regional later this month. The money they are throwing around is insane. Check airman for a wholly owned can make 434/hour flying a fifty seater. INSANE
Big Ern big fan thank you so much for bringing this to our attention. I just want to say hands out. I think the 65 timeout for airline pilot is really really great. It’s because it give pies that worked all their life to actually enjoy their retirement and everything like if they still wanna fly, they can always fly or could be whatsoever but I think the 65 rules staying in place I think it’s gonna be beneficial now if there’s more health resource that comes out that saying a pilot that is 67 is still healthy can fly the plane then I can see that happening, but I think for the time now I think keeping it at 65 is the best option
Appreciate the informational format BigErn, especially the Contour and Envoy updates amd the like! May I suggest you use a microphone that is closer to you, perhaps connect into the podcast gear for future videos as it seems the noise floor is not correct (lots of hissing heard from the background). 👍🏼
Contour sounds like a great option for low time pilots except for their very low pay for FO during the 1st 3 years, probably pilots would make a lot more as CFIs ....! whats your opinion on that ?
Setting a particular age for mandatory retirement is ridiculous these days. It should be a combination of health and competence through demonstration. You guys have to pass your proficiency checks every 6 months, that seems to be sufficient. If a person wants to continue to fly, as long as they're competent and healthy they should be allowed to continue. Of course, this also raises the issue of allowing for younger pilots to advance. As I understand it, seniority is everything, so the pipeline needs to keep moving or the less senior pilots will lose heart. Any rate, that's my two bits.
Age discrimination is ILLEGAL in the USA! No one should ever be forced to involuntary "retire" because of their age. Pilots are medically screened every 6 months. Stop the age discrimination and increase the medical scrutiny of pilots to include cardiovascular and cognitive assessments. Forced retirements must only be for medical reasons and not be based on an arbitrary age.
I think 65 is better. Folks need to be able to retire young enough to enjoy their retirement. If they want to to keep working part time or doing something else then that’s fine, but you guys should be able retire when your still young
The only people who want age 67 are people close to 65 who want to earn an extra million dollars to sit on reserve for an extra couple of years. If they really want age 67, they should be forced to fly 4 day, 4 legs a day regional routes. Then see if they still want to increase retirement age.
Most of us have been through a hiring slowdown in this career. Just focus on keeping busy taking any flying job, things will pickup again before you know it. The one thing missing from many of new hires I saw the last couple of years was humility. Things have been so good in the industry that we start taking it for granted. Usually the ones that have been through the tough times have better perspective.
65 is the right age due to the international age limit is 65. Pilots would be restricted to Conus flying only if the age changed to 67. Throwing a wrench in the operations of pilots who typically fly international.
not only are airlines hiring slowing down its already reached flight schools! I've been waiting months for any openings to multiple flight schools which are completely full of CFIs and nothing yet ;/
I went to Cent. Wash Univ.. a Graduate from there way back in 08-09 co-piloted that regional jet that went down way back when.. You remember that time..?
Kind of glad I’m about to enter the time building phase of the career after I get my CFI ratings done. Hope some of my CFI friends who are in the pipeline now at JetLinx to 225 to southwest and another at skywest can be references when I get ready to apply to jet jobs and majors later.
67 is just gonna make more people cash in more money from disability. We already have a bunch of senior pilots at my airline with the new contract going on on disability and still cashing 200k a year to sit at home. Age 67 is just gonna hurt the airlines even more, paying a lot of money to have pilots seating at home. Why do you think all airlines (mainline) are lobbying to congress not to approve age 67
Great briefing, thanks Ernie, thanks Captain. I am more curious about small airlines or small fast-growing airlines. Are there some new companies in this case in the US ? Skywest maybe ? Ah yes JSX, thanks !
Would the airplane delivery delays be beneficial to pilots who may not be ready to fly commercial airlines for another 8 years from now? I'm wondering if the delay shifts the demand to the right a few years.🤔
Hey Ern; Of the age, requirement, here's the situation, America, has Presidents, that run the government, in their eighties; and don't question, their ruling abilities. Look, I'm not saying that pilots, should fly into their eighties, but what about sixty-seven? For the record; President Obama and Clinton, were the two youngest Presidents, in history. ( fresh thoughts, and new ways to rule.) It would seem, historically, that the powers that be, believe, that an older President, makes a better. So, pilots should definitely fly 'til sixty-seven. All the best, Shaun of NYC 🗽
This was like a real aviation news channel.. way to broaden those horizons Ernie!!!!!!!
Love this new feature. Nothing like inside information from an insider

I think congress needs to adopt the same rule - retire at age 65 😂
EXACTLY!!!

When it comes to airline pilot hires in the industry, it's history repeating itself ("feast or famine plus furloughs"); fantastic video, "Skipper"!
Thank you for the update BigErn.
Guys the job market pre pandemic was pretty good. So keep flying and building time, things could be much much worse trust me.
As someone who is reaching R-ATP mins, i am feeling the hurt of the hiring slow down. Hope to get somewhere this summer though
I've honestly been wanting to hear your take on the Boeing situation and in particular the MAX being a 737 Captain.
Keep flying! Just got on with a part 135 company and will fly 800-1000hrs a year. I want to be ready and competitive when the hiring picks back up
Thanks for the info!

I agree Jason! Thanks for the feedback. We’re going to purchase some Rode mics. Next one should be clear with the audio 👍🏽
The other format of your videos is fun but this is very very helpful. Thank you.
Thanks for the interesting update!
3 minute gang 😎, for real though, love your vids Ernie!!
Good idea BigErn!
Glad you think so!
100,000 SIGNING BONUS, nice deal if you can get it. Always informative B.E.
Southwest sure could use the 200+ A320's we have over at Spirit, and we're on sale.
Contour sounds like a great option for low time pilots except for their very low pay for FO during the 1st 3 years, probably pilots would make a lot more as CFIs ....! whats your opinion on that ?
Good video
Should be when you don't pass your physical or when you feel it is time to call it quits!

67!! Absolutely! So long as you pass your physical you can fly until 67.
Are your neighbor kids taking care of your audio?
Age 65! If they want 67 put it for regional flying only- lets see how many want to stick around if they can't get Rome and Austrailia layovers.

Good job and perfect with news in this shape Ern 🙌🙌🔥 only thing is the sound is not the best and can be improved..
could you make it louder please
I think 67 is a good age for pilots to retire
The only people who want age 67 are people close to 65 who want to earn an extra million dollars to sit on reserve for an extra couple of years. If they really want age 67, they should be forced to fly 4 day, 4 legs a day regional routes. Then see if they still want to increase retirement age.
I think 67 or even 70 as long as you are healthy and fit to fly
Timing timing timing. Tough spot for us 1500 hr CFIs at the moment. Just missed the wave 🌊 and will have to keep moving forward!

Yes, 2 more years of experience to help the masses of rookies coming in.
Really great information for those of us who are passengers.
Contour baby! That’s what I’m talking about!
That was awesome content! Loved it.
If there is science to back up the age then I am for it.
Sir, thank you for this!! Im struggling in decision making right now re which path to take! This helped! All the best!
Glad it was helpful!
Bought my Delta stock at $23 and now it's at 52 1/2! Keep climbing Delta!
Informative, interesting, succinct. Absolutely love this!
Just continuing to grind away at training. Working on multi -engine add on for now.
Great briefing, thanks Ernie, thanks Captain. I am more curious about small airlines or small fast-growing airlines. Are there some new companies in this case in the US ? Skywest maybe ? Ah yes JSX, thanks !
I have a concern about low time pilots and safety in those companies like JSX and others.
Wow, I'm at 430tt. I need to get cracking n get that multi rating asap.
Love the updated news!! Thanks
Great info, thanks for the news!!
I like this content. Thanks!
Age 65 or67😮hi how's are you
I like this type of video!

I'm wondering if the delay shifts the demand to the right a few years.🤔
I don’t think it will be that long but you never know. I would do everything possible to get ready when the hiring resumes👍🏽
