Battling it out in rough ocean conditions | Catch Clean Cook | Hobie revolution

- Go Pro footage never shows just how bad the conditions are. It was some of the roughest conditions that I have ever fished in. I had 7 open ocean waves break over my kayak from the side completely flooding it. Most of them were just oh crap moments but I was almost thrown off my kayak on 3 occasions. I only managed to get one on film, but you can probably guess which one it was.
I headed out with my friend billy on this trip relying on the forecasted wind to drop to around 10 knots. The wind was down around the time we were catching bait, but it steadily increased from there. By the time I was heading in it was gusting from 15-20 knots. The wind was bad enough, but what made this situation potentially deadly was the swell. The forecast was calling for 5ft waves at 8 seconds, but with those numbers you will see some waves of twice that height. With the wind and waves increasing I made this a short trip, but was still able to get on some really quality fish including my second biggest mahi mahi. I did miss another fish (probably another yellowfin tuna) because I failed to tie on a new hook. The dull hook coupled with the huge ocean swells made it very difficult to get a good hook set. This is not how trips in rough conditions usually work out, normally you just drown your bait and catch sharks. I was lucky here, but it took every bit of my kayak fishing skill and knowledge just to stay upright. Please don't attempt do something because you see me doing it. Its not worth 1,000 of dollars in gear and ultimately not worth your life.

I'm a UH-60 crew chief. Stationed out here in HI right now. And I would like to thank you for all the time help and tip you put on these videos. Keep up the good work and stay safe out on the water. Safe flight
🤙
You know the swells are narly when they look big on a GoPro 🤙🏽
Slow them down to 50% and you can see the size a little better.
Great channel 👍 to you both ✌️
Nice pelagics
I love your catch, clean and cook videos. please keep doing them.
I'm happy to see you using the Tiger Elite rods.. I use one for topwater largemouth bass in the midwest. Great film..you have big balls being out in waves like that. I'd been in long before this! lol.. Thanks
Grew up fishing in Hawaii, now running long haul on the mainland. Love the content! Good to watch after a long day. Very well put together and your setup is amazing. Thanks for sharing!
That is soo cool sitting on a cork in big water bringing in some great dinner, what a life!
LOL glorified piece of plastic
@@FlyingFish_TV My boat is in storage and it's snowing, 8" on the ground from last night...with local lock-down, I'm having multiple adult refreshments every day...as of 4/13... not fair...
Thanks so much for this amazing fishing, filmimg and video editing content! I feel you really set a standard in yak fishing youtube world. I always look forward to your adventures.
I have thought the same for a long time!
Thank you for the high praise.
Another fantastic video. Still allowed to Hunt and fish in Alaska but that's about it. I am working more than normal as well with my job. Getting burned out but doing better than a lot of people so I am thankful. Stay healthy and keep up the good videos.
I offshore fish South Florida from the yak . But can we just take a sec to realize the shear beauty of Hawaii , bro you are living the life out there . You are blessed to be living your life . I love your videos and DIY stuff keep it up . We can still fish here in Florida . I run a pool company and we are considered essential business so we can still work . Be safe and tight lines Aloha 🤙
Thanks bro. I'll be moving in a few months to Atlanta, although the videos will show Hawaii for quite a time. I might stash a kayak down near palm beach and jump seat down there. Sadly my airline training is indefinitely postponed, I'll need to find another job in the meantime. Aloha
Nice , palm beach is nice man we will have to get up and fish . I like boynton lake worth area it's the closest spot to the gulfstream
@@fishingsodium904 Right on
Looks like the Waves were helping you out with pulling up the fish 🐟😌, excellent thanks my five year old grandson and I watch your videos every morning, 😎😁🤙🐟👣
Really enjoy your videos, the conditions you fish in that kayak are epic.
I live in Oklahoma so kayak fishing off the coast of Hawaii is the ultimate.
Here in Oklahoma we're lucky to not be completely shut down by Covid19,I think it helps to keep your sanity to be able to go out for a walk, fishing, biking,or like I did today, riding the motorcycle.
And it never hurts to live vicariously through someone who appears to be living the life 8*).
Thanks for the vid. As always, it was a pleasure to watch you fishing. We in Germany were advised stay in our home and do our work from there if possible. We are allowed to go for a walk or go fishing as long as we don't meet other people. Stay save - and thanks for the vid. It keeps my mood up!
Thanks bro, I would go crazy if I couldn’t go outside. I’m a pilot so I can’t really work from home.
Just glad you got home safe, can see you an experienced kayaker, going out there, awesome video, keep them coming, i'm in lock down in south Africa and look forward greatly to your videos, keeps me sane hear lol, great video , cheers
Thanks Andrew. Stay safe brother
He deserves a lot more subscribers and I bet this stay at home mandate blows up his channel :)
I bet a lot more people are watching RUclips. I’m hoping these get out to people who are actually interested in my content. Rather than people that just want to see me attacked by a tiger shark.
14:50 "yeh I need to get outta here" .Keeps fishing, .legend ! great video
Thanks bro
Awesome bud...Thanks for the great video! 👍👊
A book comes to mind while watching you, Old man and the Sea - Hemingway
I always know...once I see you put up a video...you survived the trip! Incredibly exciting stuff, really crazy great fish you catch...from a kayak. The overall production is top-notch, you put a lot into it. Still filming fish instead of landing, but this seems to give us a bit more time to enjoy. Fishing is allowed from the Va. beach, specifically pointed out by the governor (social/physical distancing.) Golfing is also allowed, so I'm doing that for now. Y'all take care.
Thanks bro. After I leave Hawaii in a few months I'll probably start hitting the range again.
No work up here in Minnesota cant do much with Covid 19 goin on and lakes are still froze beautiful out where you are awesome fish all you saltwater guys doin great job giving us something to look forward to
That's amazing. In a revolution 13 in big swells. Jeez, Impressive
Love your videos you got me on kayak fishing and follow a lot of your strategies. Thank for the good content tight lines😎😎💪💪🎣🎣
Really crappy weather, but a great day of fishing!! Thanks for sharing w us!!
Great video as always, pretty sketchy conditions... Here in Santa Clara County California they have everyone staying home as much as possible. If you go outside they want you wearing a fast mask even if you are just walking alone. Trips to the grocery store are discouraged, it is recommended that you use a delivery service. We have had people ticketed and fined for going out to exercise away from their home area. No tackle shops are open most restaurants are closed and those that are open are offering limited menus and delivery only. I live next to San Jose International and I no longer hear any planes flying overhead. There is no traffic on the freeways which are usually clogged with bumper to bumper traffic. I have not been out fishing for over a month, I am living vicariously through people fishing on RUclips. Keep the content coming while you still can. Mahalo
Fish Hunt you should move
Joe Rob
It is in the plan. My oldest attends a private high school as a junior. After he graduates the plan is selling the house and then splitting between the big island, and either Washington, Wyoming or Alaska. All three of the latter states do not tax government retirees. ( I am retired) Hawaii is iffy on taxing me as it has to be decided what portion of my government income is taxable.
Fish Hunt that sounds like a great plan. Good luck too you.
Truly enjoy watching you fish. Also, gotta love those Uglystiks...
Yeah !! Nice job dude !! Wonderful mahimahi !!!👍😉 congratulations !
Thanks bro. It’s always fun catching them. Last week I came across a school of 8 mahi mahi swimming with feet of my kayak. I couldn’t get them to eat anything, live or dead bait.
Good job again 👍👍we are confined here and are not allowed to go for fishing... Enjoy 🎣🎣
Great!!! Wow what waves and what fishs 😲😲😲😲😲🐟👏👏👏

Awesome video, Here in Cayman we have soft lockdown during the day and hard at night, we are now allowed to go fishing or work out for 90 min a day. I work in a big four accounting firm so work is still stable but thanks for the videos man they help big time.
Right in Anthony. 90 minutes isn’t a lot of time for fishing 😂. Glad you’re still working
@@FlyingFish_TV my pro angler is just sitting there only fishing from shore is allowed 😭
Great video. Got to be tough fishing in swells like that. Great job!
Man, you are my inspiration to go out and continue this sport. I do have the same yak. But definitely NOT the same experience. Great vid as usual 👋

What an adventure, what confidence, what skill. Best vids on RUclips. COVID-19 is keeping us housebound. And we now live about six hours inland from San Diego, so . . . yeah, no kayak fishing for me for a while longer. You must have many years of experience at this. How many?
I started kayak fishing when I came here a little over 2 years ago now.
Man you made my day. Great video.
Awesome video ! I enjoy watching catching all nice fish..man I miss home on the islands ..here San Diego and most of the coast California is closed due to the covid 19 no one fishing basically anything..but it's all good to stop the virus from going out of hand and hope it goes away soon..🤙aloha!!
Those sure are beautiful looking fish.
I live on Maui got a used PA 14 December and have been slowly getting out further and further. Learn a lot from your stuff so far. I am a pilot too and have taken reduced pay leave for April and now May... getting out once a week, and slowly learning more. Waiting for all my fish finder stuff to get in so I can learn to target fish, and find some spots... seems the key is live bait, which I don’t know how to get yet. So for now trolling lures for Papio, trying damashi bottom fishing and just tried going out deeper for jigging. Trolling has gotten me some good Papio. Just like being out on the water, although on way nicer days than this video. Born and raised Kailua, so always nice to see home. Bummer you got to leave, gonna be a tough year or more for our profession, but it will get on it’s feet again. I got started right at 9/11 so the road was long, but worth it. Going to miss watching new videos, but as I just found this have some catching up to do. Good luck in Atlanta.
Thanks man. I’ll be leaving in June, but I have around 50 videos waiting to be edited. I just need to find the time to edit them. I got a job at Skywest to start in July, but since covid I haven’t heard any news other than everything is indefinitely postponed. I am looking for jobs in Atlanta but you can imagine that it is slim. I am just on the cusp of the next level, but might have to get a job using my A&P in the meantime. If you have questions hit me up on Instagram. A fish finder will help you put a lot.

Disregard that last comment as I found your DIY videos and thanks for the great tutorial.
That jerky looks yummy. In Cali we have a stay at home order, except for the grocery stores and going to work if we have to. Be careful, those waves looked big. No access to any of our beaches or lakes, it sucks. I'm dieing to fish. Take care. We down in Cali.
Same here Curtis, I was out back getting some sun casting into my yard from my tailgate. Can't wait to load the yak back up and get out there.
Kia Ora from Wellington, New Zealand. We are in lock down. 1 person from our family bubbles may visit our grocery store/ supermarket at a time. Required to space ourselves, by your measurements, around 6 ft apart from others not from our bubble, under those circumstances. Stay in your own area. No travelling intercity unless you’re in essential work. Exercise is allowed near home. No mountain biking on trails, so I ride around my suburban block. No going out to fish from a kayak let alone fish! No surfing! City’s and suburban areas are like ghost towns. One of my sisters in another town north of here, got to her supermarket yesterday just near opening time in the morning and the queue of people was out the door, down the road and around the corner. Bizarre! We live near a domestic and international flight path & I don’t remember hearing even 1 single aircraft today. There are some “Muppets” around and about who fail to follow the rules. The majority of NZ’s people understand that the more seriously we take the measures and adhere to the rules, then in the end we’ll spend less time overall. The sacrifices we make now will save lives!
Being new to Kayak fishing ( freakin frustrated) I’m using the Lockdown time on DIY stuff like the Bait torpedo which I finished adding some keel weight to yesterday. Made a Sabiki/Damashi Rod last week. I put the front hand grip on this morning. Looking at a form/ setup for creating stinger rigs this arvo but might revisit how I store the bait torpedo out of the water on my kayak while transiting between land & fishing zones & visa versa.
Kia Ora friend. I feel like the grocery store is the most likely place to pick it up where I live. Thats nuts they won't let you out on a kayak, easily the most isolated I get. They used a test curfew this weekend 11pm to 5am, but I'm not sure it helped at all. I am considered an essential worker, and on in the way to fly at 1am it was a total ghost town on an island of 1 million people. Thanks for commenting, take care.
Out in SoCal we can’t really fish. It’s really kinda scary like a ghost town. But hey man it’s life.
Stay safe bro.
Tight lines !
Honolulu is the same, it’s so quiet there without half a million tourists running around. My friend from the last video is in SoCal, he can’t fish either. Stay safe bro
Nice stick!! Looked a little nautical out there... pretty work!
I'm sure you've probably heard this more than once but I think you need a bigger boat.....outstanding job editing though!
Dude u have the coolest vids thanks a bunch!
Another great catch and video. Yea it get’s ugly here for us also back Maui. Been taking advantage of this nice weather we’ve been having.. Gone out to North Shore a few times,.. But baits been really slow though. But atleast get to enjoy the view and practice SOCIAL DISTANCING 😂 with this CORONA VIRUS PANDEMIC. Good going Dan..Keep up the great work!!🤙🏻
Nice bro. This channel is really blowing up!
Thanks Albert. I saw your spearfishing video last week, it was pretty cool. I’m still down to do a spearfishing trip sometime. One of my old videos is getting a lot of views and I think that is driving up subs. Also helps that I am finally cranking out videos again and that mfs actually have time to watch them. The channel has gained 1,000 subscribers in the last month, it’s nice to see the work paying off.
@@FlyingFish_TV Nice man, just lmk when you wanna go. We can shore dive or yak dive.
Awesome video as always! That looked so delicious!! Here in Southern California they really want you to stay at home, but you can still fish and get exercise, as long as you take social distancing seriously. Sadly I still haven’t picked my new Stealth Fisha 555. It’s a 460 mile drive up to Santa Rosa, where the Northern California Stealth distributor is located. I’m thinking that wouldn’t exactly be considered essential travel!😭😭😭😭
Lost Horizon Fishing I live about 10km away from the Stealth factory here in sunny South Africa. Won't help us much. We in total lockdown here. No fishing for us. The guys here are having withdrawal symptoms and we have another 8 days to go. That's if they don't make it longer.
Izak De Beer hopefully they won’t extend your “no go” period beyond the remaining 8 days. Even though the stay-at-home order isn’t mandatory here (I.e. you won’t get arrested if you go fishing) the vast majority of the public beaches where you would launch from are closed. Surprisingly... most people here are taking this thing really seriously and when I go out to buy food there are very few people out and about. Good luck over in South Africa and stay healthy!❤️😃
Good morning. Last night our president announced the lockdown extended another two weeks. It sucks friend. Right now fishing is the least of my problems. I can only pray that God will help us when this is over. Catch a big one when you get on the water again.
Epic day, for sure! What a pair! But please make sure you do your PFD up - especially in those types of conditions.
p.s. unfortunately, no fishing here in State of VIctoria, Australia
Someday I am going to get wiped out by a massive wave. Maybe I should do it without all my expensive gear.
Awesome day....the conditions are shit LOL Great video as always!!!
Amazing video and great balance on these big swells. Could you please explain how you stay balanced on your kayak with all these big waves while fighting the fish? I have a quest 13 which is similar hull to the revo. Thanks in advance.
I try to stay limber and kind of ride with the waves. A lot of it has to do with reading the waves and staying out of bad situations. If you want to get better, go out and flip your kayak a few times.
Great vid, trying to get on the big water next weekend on my kayak. I know what you mean about the flying. We are flying everyday, no slow down for us.
So. I don't fish. No idea how to fish. I don't even live close to an ocean. But I stumbled on this channel and I am (pun very intended) hooked. Great channel 👍
Do you post any recipes on how you prepare/cook the fish?
beautiful catch brother
Challenging conditions! In NorCal its just rained for 3 days, so today's sun was much appreciated. I have not fished locally or for years, but enjoy watching you fish. So, what's a sheebe? Female Yellowfin or larger one?? Not able to work, lockdown here. Supposed to only ride within a 5 mile radius from home...today with a mask when people were in sight. Will sure need that 1200 check to minimize the savings dipping! Be careful. I have caught Wahoo, Dorado and Yellowfin, grouper, jacks etc in the cape region of Baja Peninsula. First job was as a deckhand on sportsfishing boat out of Newport Beach, Southern California. Best!
its called a "shibi" and it basically just means small tuna

Given that ocean fish contain mercury and specially in the bigger fish, do you follow the recommendations to eat once every 2 weeks or so fish that have medium to high concentrations of Hg? Like yellow tuna and others?
Fantástico video!👏👏👏👏👏👍
hello, great vid again. I can't open your kit link to know what baitrunner reel you're use...

@@FlyingFish_TV do yo prefere spinning or casting (trolling) reel? for live bait fishing
I like spinning reels, but I also like conventional too. They suit kind of different roles. I like conventional for bottom fishing. I haven’t done too much live baiting with conventionals, but they are better for bigger fish over 50lbs. I got a 70lb yellow fin tuna on my conventional a few months ago. I’ve also fought marlin on it too, but haven’t landed any.

Hello, at 13:10 approx. was that a side mount transducer? Thx. The best kayak vids, great info!
I use a Rail Blaza transducer arm. My transducer is 8 inches long and won't fit in the plate under the kayak. I chose to mount it directly in the water for the best image.
I was stationed sub base Pearl back in the mid-90's...great times. I'm rigging my PA14 to head off-shore in TX for bigger fish. Right at the beginning of the video when you are showing your rig setup at home your sabiki type rig has a clear split tail sparkly minnow or something like that. What are those called or do you have a link for buying
The brand is completely hooked lures and they are called minnows in the nox color. I usually get them at POP, but you can buy them off his website too. www.chlures.com/products/nox-4

Aloha, I have the Garmin 64 cv with the stock transducer. I would buy a garmin but they have cheaper models that work good as well. Get it from West marine and buy the warranty for WHEN it breaks, because it will. Use the money to upgrade your fish finder or get a replacement for free.
Doing alright so far have not caught the ccp virus yet and we can still fish in southern Louisiana 👍 enjoy watching you catch those fish there
Thanks Paul. Do you normally fish the back water or are you able to make it out for pelagic?
@@FlyingFish_TV mainly fish the inside waters my boat is not big enough to get out to the open water too often. Every once in awhile it is calm enough i have been out there and really enjoy it. I think it would be fun to do that in a kayak as well.👍 thanks again for showing what you do there 😉
your kayak is so cool
Howzit my bruddah. I wanted to ask your advice...my 15 year old son is looking into buying a Hobie Kayak to use for fishing and diving. Which model would you advise? We live on the Hilo side of the Big Island...any advice on where best to get one from as well? Mahalo
For diving I would get a wider model like the outback. You can fish off an outback just as well, but they don't perform as well as my revolution 13 in rough conditions like this video. I heard the hobie shop closed over there. You can order one from the shop on Oahu or you can also buy one online and have it shipped for a little cheaper. Cragslist usually has used hobies for sale as well.
Agree w gopro not capturing the significance. Even on kayaking whitewater flood stage looks like flat water on camera. Thanks for the video and description.

Hi, im sartibg to do fishing as a hobby. I just wonder the 3 jigs you have and reels, can you give me the specs and also the fishing lines used? Great.video! Thanks in advance!
The jigs are 100g center balanced fall flat jigs
Just found this RUclips video, looks awesome.... Any reason you use then Penn reals and not Shimano or Daiwa?
Switched to Shimano later on.
What kind of sabiki rig is that?
Ohh My, God is Beautiful ✌️😎
How far do you go offshore to get into your game fish.... its hard to gauge, was watching an older vid of yours, you got y-fin bitten off tail & saw a bloody paddle boader in the distance
And generally what is your crusing speed when towing live bait tubes, be it one or two tubes....wouldn't mind a pedal powered to do some distance
How big you reckon the seas were in this video
Kool vids bro, thanks for diy on the livebait tubes
