  • Our chickens have gave us hundreds of eggs and we need to give something back so we are going to make them stylish new house.
Make sure you subscribe to follow our daily lives in this farm!
    Hey to everyone!!
We are two young adults, Despina 22 and Deivids 23 renovating an old farm house from 1817 in Latvia. Everything in and out of our house has been done by ourselves with no hired help. Soooo far everything is going great and there haven't been any incidents.
DIY is going to apply to nearly everything in our house. Our budget is tight and that has made us appreciate every "ugly" part of this house and turn it into something new and beautiful.
We give new life to things that others would throw away!
In this journey we are not alone! We are starting up our little Farmily and part of it are
    3 Goats & 2 Baby Goats
    1 Mom Sheep & 2 Baby Sheep
    4 chickens
    1 Rooster
    and 1 Goose
Oh yeah and my cat Ivi
Despite our daily problems we are two young people full of joy and happiness, ready to start a new crazy chapter in our life. It wouldn't be fair to keep this fun for us!
that's why we want YOU to be also part of our Farmily!!
    Hope you enjoy our video!
We love our very supportive community!!
Thank you so much for the support you are giving us. Every view, like, share, subscribe and financial support means a lot to us. Any support is extremely appreciated!

    Lesson in cutting old glass.
    - Clean the surface you intend to cut with terpentine.
    - Make the cut in one go.
    - Place a nail lengthwise under a beginning of the cut.
    - Place your thumbs on both sides of the nail and gently push.
You will see a slit speeding forward and the glass parting flawlessly!

They will think they are living in a palace with what you are doing for them especially giving them enough time to acclimate to everything before harsh weather!!!

Using off cuts that way, is an excellent way to recycle usable material, save money, and achieve something of great value to you - and the chickens. I was told that cutting old glass is nearly impossible, even for a skilled glass cutter, well done for trying. Keeping up with all the projects is difficult, you are winning, but the scale of the work is very broad, so, it is good that you are still young, fit, strong and well motivated and thus able to keep up with all the work. Having good food to keep you going is essential. We are all looking forward to seeing the project progress.

Be sure you chicken house has some good ventilation. Chickens produce a lot of moisture and the moisture is what causes combs to freeze and they can get sick. I would not add heat, but a little light on a timer will help them in your dark winters.

Great repurposing of materials! The coop is looking great. It looks more like a chicken resort. Be careful re chickens eating pears. Although pear pits/seeds contain less cyanide than apple seeds they do contain cyanide. (Years ago a friend of mine had chickens and fruit trees. She saw chickens pecking at the pits/seeds. Once they busted the pits/seeds open they continued to peck and consume pieces of the pits/seeds.) I only mention this in the hopes you do your own research.

Hello again. Love your idea of doing a new chicken coop. It looks awesome. Don't forget they need perches to roost on at night time. Not sure if your big been house has got them...
I would be concerned about using the insulation as they could over heat. Being in the smaller coop snuggled together will keep them perfectly warm enough
. And I have to say there is something you need to be aware of in chickens.
Chickens can and even if you cleaned the coop out daily, will get a bug called 'red mite'.
Red mite hide in dark nooks and crannies of the wood during the day, then at night time they crawl along the perches climb up the chickens legs and go and feast on the chickens blood.
If you want to check if your chickens have any the best place to spot them is under their wings.
Red mite are hard shelled bugs like fleas. They can't be squished between our fingers they can be squished between the nail of your fingers and a hard surface.
Some products you can use to kill red mite that you add to their water supply or spray in the coop, make it not good to eat the eggs for a certain amount of days.. But there is a natural product that is a powder and you rub into the chickens feathers all over kills the red mite because it's like thousands of tiny shards of razor/glass and it kills them by cutting them and drying them out. It does not harm the chickens in any way and it does not have a bad effect on the eggs.
If the red mite get too populated they can drain the chickens of blood and weaken the chickens badly.
The powder is a natural product in soil around? I think it was lakes or rivers. It's been a while since I've read up on it..
When we had chickens ( for about 15 years) we tried all sorts of spray's for the chickens and liquids in thier coop and none worked properly. When we used the powder we followed advice from experts and puffed it in all corners, gaps nooks and crannies. And we coated the birds too. Paying special attention to under the wings. It stopped the red mite in their tracks worth every penny. Within a week we stopped finding any red might..
we re coated all nooks and crannies once a month In summer when it's hot they need more, less often in winter. And the chickens once every now and again or when/if we spotted them on the chicken We checked them often.. This powder is called. Diatomatious earth. ( DE, for short) It's expensive here in the UK. But with every penny.
The only thing you need to remember is to wear a mask when you puff the powder into the coop and on the chickens because it is not great for our lungs. But it really truly works and is 100% natural product. Your chickens might not get red mite for the first couple of years. But eventually you will see them. Ps if you look for them in the day it's hard to find them but shine a torch in the recesses of corners, joints , and where the perches slot in, at night time and you will see them if you have them.... They are like the size of a pin head and red... Good luck. Let me know what you think.

Yes I use DE for my chickens and even cats, sprinkle a little on their food to kill parasites..just be careful don't inhale it, nor your animals. You can't find it here in Italy but I have a friend who buys it online a big sack and much cheaper.

Hi Despina and Deivids, Congrats on the success of your channel. I recently found you and have really enjoyed your video's. Your baby geese caught my attention one morning and your enthusiasm was so exciting! I started perusing your channel and learned about you a little and have been watching ever since. I think you are both amazing. It takes a lot of guts to tackle the life you are living. Please keep doing what you are doing. Your channel will grow bigger and bigger, I just know it. I noticed a comment about not getting enough video's up recently. August - September are the busiest time of the year on the farm, or should be. I mean, you have to get ready for winter! I love you two, so I really want to offer two bits of advice. First, you need to make compost for your garden. I haven't watched every video yet, so I may be wrong, but it seems your soil lacks humus. It looks a little sandy but dark which means rich. Humus helps hold moisture in the soil. It will lesson the need for watering. A thick mulch of the right kind will also help retain moisture. Plus you have chicken manure to compost and use as fertilizer! Thank-you so much.
