    That automatic brake arm can be easily adjusted so that it works. Pull off the turntable, loosen one screw, adjust the stop mechanism and tighten the screw. Replace the turntable....done! Also you really need to get some leather or padding applied to the brake so it's not metal on metal any longer.

    The odd looking reproducer that looks quite different from the others is made to play the regular 78 rpm lateral cut records from victor, columbia and so on. It takes a regular phonograph steel needle, which you can buy dirt cheap on ebay. Just make sure you ONLY use it to play NON EDISON records. This was sold in the day as an alternative to having 2 machines to play the different style records. The edison reproducer uses a diamond needle that could potentially last a century. Mine has. The lateral cut records, that is to say, the regular 78s, needed to have the steel needle changed after every record. Good thing they are cheap..Also, lift the turntable off and attach or glue a piece of felt or leather or a rubber eraser on the brake arm AND GET RID OF THAT DAMN SCRAPING NOISE THE BRAKE MAKES.

    I just dug out the one I inherited from my father ... thought I would just release the brake and see what happened. It's probably been 40 years since we touched it. Released the brake and this beauty just spun right up!

    I believe the turntable is supposed to have a thin felt padding so you don’t scratch the disc

    After the invention of Edisons phonograph in 1877 the disc record was more popular so to compete with his phonograph he started making disc records but he didn't want to copy the patent of victor and you couldn't copywrite someone else's design at the time, so he made his own way of recording. At 8:09 the reproducer that you said is different, is a lateral cut reproducer commonly used by the Victor Talking machine co. That is a product, that Edison used to manufacture back in the day since there was competition with lateral cut vs. vertical cut records ( the difference is the way of recording. Lateral cut is recorded side to side and vertical cut is recorded up and down) so since there were more Victor records or lateral cut records in shops, and were more popular, Edison made a configuration that you can attach to the machine so then you can play these lateral cut records. and that product you have at 8:09 is it.
    Edit: you can look online how to add that configuration to the machine and there are also pictures of it on the machine. you can even look up victor phonographs to see how you should play lateral cut records with the other reproducer.
    And you MUST with the lateral cut reproducer change the needle after every record or after every 2 records because if you don't the record will wear out over time. and I've seen badly worn out records with amazing titles and to prevent this is to change the steel needle after every use. I should know because I have a Victor Gramophone the fifth or V, and the needles can be added with titling the round reproducer up and unscrewing the screw and place the steel needle into the hole and tighten the screw and play. then repeat this process to remove the needle and place it back again. other needles that can be used are bamboo ,cactus ,or wood/toothpick (but do NOT use any household toothpick its not made the same or it isn't the same wood as manufactured ones for the gramophone)

      @@JerriGarretson The same did they for record players in lateral cut, a soundbox for Edison and Pathe records.
      Before the mid 1930's, a gem based stylus wasn't in use for lateral cut records, it came a pretty modern pickup (Telefunken TO 1001), lightweighted, but the sapphire stylus isn't replaceable (fun fact, that they recommend to use a sapphire for 80 hours only, contrarly to diamond, what lasts 500 to 1000 hours, depending to quality level and unit's quality.
      Telefunken TO 1001's design made it into the early 1950's, was also copied by East Germany, but when micro groove and vinyl came, people changed to record players, that are compatible to the new formats.

    If you pull out on the stop bracket under the turn table, it will contact the swing arm and stop the player! It can be adjusted before playing each record to the grooves of the record! Easy peasy!!! The second diagram with the steel needle is for playing the regular thinner 78 rpm records... sounds like the felt under the turn table which stops it is worn out or missing.....screeeccchhhhhhh!!😵‍💫

    In answer to Estelle Slootmaker, who could not move the tone arm on her Edison, I had my sister examine the one in our video. She said, "My sister examined the Edison in our video. She said, “I can't find anything other than the lever - you raise or lower the lever and it raises and lowers the tone arm. If that doesn't work, it must be either stuck or something broken inside perhaps.
    When it (the tone arm) is moved to the left/center it is actually in the down position, and no, once you have pushed it all the way to the left(into the center) it is locked in that position. You can’t move it back to the right again unless you put the lever down which releases it/raises it up and it it free to move again.
    When you raise and lower the lever, the entire bullhorn contraption underneath in the cabinet goes up and down. It is connected to the tone arm in the back. The whole thing is connected like in a loop."
    She also make two short videos showing what she is talking about. I have not found a way to post them directly in this comment, but will try to do so via links.

    On October 1, 1908, the first production Model T Ford is completed at the company's Piquette Avenue plant in Detroit. Between 1908 and 1927, Ford would build some 15 million Model T cars. It was the longest production run of any automobile model in history until the Volkswagen Beetle surpassed it in 1972

    I have the same Edison disc phonograph. When my father passed, it was left to me. I never knew the speaker was behind the sound screen or that you could even adjust the volume. Thank you soooo much for this video 🥰. Could you tell me though, how to change the needle? There are extra needles but the inital one is totally worn down. It looks as if you just pop the old one out and stick in another needle but it seems to take more force than I want to use.

      Hello, I asked my brother, who did the demo in this video, about your problem. Here’s his answer. I hope it helps. “If he cranks and cranks without feeling any resistance, the crank is not engaging the spring tightener. I think that happened to me once, but it was so long ago I don't remember the fix. But I'll suggest pushing the crank in and then slightly crank back and forth just a little way to see if he feels it engaged.
      Then, when he cranks to tighten, keep pressure pushing the crank in to keep it engaged.”

      Hello, I hope you will be able to see this. My sister took photos of the crank and also measured and drew it, as well as photographed how and where it went into the Edison cabinet. Apparently, in order to post photos in a RUclips comment, they have to be hosted somewhere on line and you can just provide a link. I'd have to figure out where to load them. It would be easier to just send them to you. Please let me know.

You do not need a Dropbox account to access it. If it asks you to log in, just ignore that. You can download the photos if you wish. I have no idea, but I'll ask my brother, who explained the way to operate it.

    • @JerriGarretson
      @JerriGarretson  2 года назад

      Hello, Gino. Here is what my brother had to say about your playing issue. I hope it helps.
      "That's a strange situation they're having.
      With the needle raised, I'd take my hand and, holding the tone arm lightly, move it back and forth across the area where the record would be on the turntable and see if there is any resistance. If so, find out what the tonearm might be pushing against that may slow down the turntable. It might require looking up inside the box below the turntable where the speaker horn is located.
      As shown in the video, the tone arm can trip the turntable brake, and that would slow down the turntable, but that would make a loud scrapping sound, and they'd hear it. However, if that is the problem, an adjustment would be needed there.
      The comment says, "No matter how much I wind it." Although the wound spring should turn the record at full speed all the way through a play, if the spring is old and weak, it may run out of power even if it is wound up all the way at the beginning. If you recall, in the video we made, I didn't have the spring wound all the way, and the record started slowing down. I started winding it back up while the record was playing, and it returned to full speed.
      Also, the commenter wrote, "No matter how much I wind it," but didn't specify if that meant winding it all the way before starting play of the record or if it included winding it like I did when the record started slowing down. I would certainly give winding it while the record is playing a try. If the record speeds back up, then I'd say it is a weak spring that can't keep the turntable turning through the full play of a record. I don't know if there is an adjustment that can be made on the spring or if it would require a new spring. I also don't know if replacement springs are available.
      I hope this is helpful and the commenter gives feedback on whether the problem gets determined and hopefully solved."

    Just brought my great grandparents' Edison Diamond Disc phonograph home. They lived in Two Rivers, WI. The record player part is exactly like the one demonstrated but it is in a larger console. The tone arm seems to be stuck in the down position. The lever doe not raise it up. Any advice?

      @@estelleslootmaker5258 My brother says there IS a lock on the arm, and he is thousands of miles from the Edison that belonged to our mother so he can't access it, but he believes it is on the end of the arm where it attaches to the console. You may need to look for a lever. My sister has the Edison now, and I have asked if it is accessible where she can look at it and find out more, perhaps take a photo of the part you need to access. It's important to be able to lock the arm during transport to prevent damage to it and other parts.

    • @JerriGarretson
      @JerriGarretson  2 года назад

      My sister examined the one in this video. There is nothing but the lever to raise or lower the arm, but if the lever is DOWN, the arm should be UP and vice versa. If your lever doesn't raise or lower it, something may be disconnected. My sister gave me some explanation and made two short videos of the lever and mechanism in operation, which I posted at the top of the comments today. Not sure any of that will be useful to you, but we tried.

      The 78 rpm are related to construction and the motor's rpm.
      Theoretically, you could reduce to 33 1/3 rpm for speech, but only a minority could play these, owning the special Victor long play record player, what failed in success or a record cutter, what has also 33 1/3 rpm.
      So I guess, they increased the playing time for speech by cutting the low frequencies.

    • @JerriGarretson
      @JerriGarretson  2 года назад

      80 rpm is the correct speed for the Edison records. Competitors played at 78 rpm but you can only play those on the Edison with the special arm for the laterally grooved records. The speed changes in this video result primarily from the demonstrator not cranking the machine as far as he needed to in order to get the correct speed....worrying about cranking the old thing too far.
