AOL messenger (and the chat rooms) of the mid 90s were an entirely different world. To those who know, the pioneers with the arrows in their backs, it was really something to be able to converse with literally hundreds of thousands of people in real time from all corners of the world. I met some amazing people, developed lifelong relationships, just from that short period of time back when I was a kid. Facebook didn't come for another decade, and I know there were BBS'es long before Internet and AOL but those conversations were strung out over days, weeks and even months. AOL messenger was a different kind of magic.

The problem is that Telegram is one of the number one sites used by scammers, and they don't seem to be doing anything about it, hence why the CEO is in trouble. They need to crack down on the scammers a hell of a lot more than they seem to be doing.
Signal user before it even was Signal (TextSecure) and still loving it. Only other messenger here is iMessage but not often used. Family, work and most friends and hobby contacts luckily switched to Signal.
Telegram's popularity continues to grow exponentially, especially with the introduction of mini-apps. I see them overtaking Messenger for the third spot before the year ends.

They chose to remove the integrated SMS client. Now it's just another Whatsapp with less of your contacts (Whatsapp uses the signal protocol btw). They cut off their nose to spite their face with that move.

Last 10 years I've preferred Google's Allo=>Hangouts=>Chat messenger for it's no-phone number usage and I like that nobody from social networks and phone contacts annoys me.
In sheer number of total users worldwide sure, obviously. But that would take combining all kinds of SMS services and the hundreds of apps out there designed for SMS. SMS isn't a program or service developed and maintained by one organization like the ones listed in this video are. To compare SMS, you'd have to consider numbers for each and every phone carrier service that offers SMS, breakdown the hundreds of SMS capable apps, and calculate the subset of users who explicitly used those apps for SMS (since many of the apps in this video were and are capable of handling SMS a I don't know how you'd calculate that with any accuracy).
I remember the AIM'ing friends on the Gmail messenger as late as 2011 or 12. It shows you that the world from a generation ago isn't even recognizable anymore.

In India, WhatsApp is most popular. Telegram is second. No one uses SMS. It is only for receiving Bank messages, OTPs and Advertisements.

I absolutely hate whatsapp. Worst app ever. I hate that I have to use it to see people's photos.
WhatsApp can be a pain, but it's hard to avoid when everyone else is on it.
I don't know Phone numbers of about 80% People I know, so I don't need that and the app design looks like from 2012

Last 10 years I've preferred Google's Allo=>Hangouts=>Chat messenger for it's no-phone number usage and I like that nobody from social networks and phone contacts annoys me.

In sheer number of total users worldwide sure, obviously. But that would take combining all kinds of SMS services and the hundreds of apps out there designed for SMS.
SMS isn't a program or service developed and maintained by one organization like the ones listed in this video are. To compare SMS, you'd have to consider numbers for each and every phone carrier service that offers SMS, breakdown the hundreds of SMS capable apps, and calculate the subset of users who explicitly used those apps for SMS (since many of the apps in this video were and are capable of handling SMS a I don't know how you'd calculate that with any accuracy).
