Well you are very welcome here! It's nice to know there are people outside of South Africa watching and enjoying the videos too. I have some friends and family in New Zealand too as a matter of interest. Thanks for the support, Tiaan!
I think he is a GP in Sydney now. What a great example of a humble and brilliant rugby player. We all knew that he got the shortest straw and did not deserve the treatment he got from the Transvaal club.
If you are referring to Uli Schmidt, then yes. He actually moved away from Sydney. He is now closer to Brisbane, but not quite in Brisbane as far as I understand the Australian geography.
My ultimate hero, growing, the epitome of a real man. Remember meeting him once in Wine Cafe in JHB one night when WP lost against TVL, and such a humble bloke compared to some others who play elite level sport.
I will give this man this. He never jockeyed against Francios in this interview. never said a mean word against Kitch, just gave his side of the story and that was that. I don't know if I could have done the same thing if I was in his position. We can all learn a lesson from that. And no, I was not a WP supporter, so I do not have blue hooped tinted glasses on :) But when you factor in that we had big Mark play 8th man, that in itself a risk, it was a shame there was no place for this man. I have nothing against Rudolf Strauli, but in my view, Tiaan was better. Its just a shame it polarized things the way it did.
Yes a very classy response from a very classy man. Great player and a class act off the field too. It could not have been easy knowing that you are worthy but no matter what you do, you are not going to be selected. I'm glad he was able to still go on and win a World Cup - even if it wasn't for the Springboks.
I have watched these out of sync and I probably am revising my favourite interviews of yours as I watch these. However this is currently my favourite one ( standby for further revision) I am almost embarrassed to admit this but Tiana Strauss is the reason that to this day that I root for the ‘Tahs when Stormers aren’t competing against them. He was rock solid and composed. I thought he was great captain and 8. Thanks again for these. If Joe Pietersen ( I know he wasn’t a Bok which still saddens me) is on your shopping list for an interview I would be the first to watch.
Keep the comments coming - I'm loving it! Thank you. Tiaan was "my first captain" at Province so of course I'm going to be biased. I think he got a raw deal in South African rugby but it was almost as if it was his destiny to become a World Cup winner (just not with the Boks). Joe Pietersen isn't on my shopping list ... but that could change in the future! I'm always reviewing what I do on the channel.
@@frontrowrugby he was mine as in terms of what I can actively remember from when my love Province moved away from indoctrination 😁 to infatuation. I was grade 11 when he ran out for the Tahs. I figured Joe wasn’t on the shopping list ( a girl can dream though) judging from the general theme of your channel but d@mn was that man done dirty as well. Boks were size-ist in their early years. To quote my favourite comedian Dara O’ Briain: “Nostalgia is like heri*n to old people” Trying to moderate my language so it doesn’t get flagged by the RUclips gods🤣
@@rif9576 Let's not give our age away! Haha ... On the topic of Joe and size, have you seen my Corne Krige interview? Another former Province captain! But he also talks about size and how he knew he should retire because he knew Jake White wouldn't select him because he was too small! In terms of level of engagement: I try my best to respond to all the comments except the ones that are really rude or extremely negative. Was my childhood hero. Got to play with him in an invitational game against China and screwed up a lineout - will never forget the look he gave me! LOL
I remember watching Tiaan Strauss sorting out the Argentinians and French during the mid-week games - he certainly did n't stand down to an altercation. I don't think the boks have ever lost an on-field altercation ever:)
Tiaan is a qualified lawyer and has also done work with Outsurance. You'll be pleased to know that I'm going to start making a point of asking the guys exactly what it is they are up to these days ... it's a very popular question actually from guys like yourself.
As a die hard Northern Transvaal supporter I thought Tiaan would make a great career captain for the Boks. Francois was too liberal and just trying to be a pretty boy. Years later I lost the last piece of respect for his kneeling for a terrorist movement.
It's always the mark of respect when your greatest rival rates you so highly. When it came to Northerns and Province, there were very few players that fell into this category.
Francois kneeling for political BS. What a sell out. No man should be brought to his knees by another man. What did b l m ever do for the benefit of humanity. SIS Francois Pienaar , to lick Corporate arse like that. Yuk.
It wasn’t mentioned in the conversation but the true reason why Tiaan was axed was because in 94 during the tour to Great Britain he was ten minutes late for a practice and he had to go through a tekkie parade in a parking lot of the hotel they were staying in. After that he never played for SA again. It was in Edward Griffith’s book: The Captains.
@@wilburburger6155 Thanks for that. Edward Griffiths has actually written some really good books. I enjoy his writing. He helped write Francois Pienaar's book as well as Kepler Wessels' biography. Both were excellent reads.

Yes, quite right, Mark. Regardless of the fans' feelings towards Tiaan, Kitch delivered the World Cup so that vindicates his decision as the coach. There are no what ifs.
You'll notice that my earlier videos had them and then they were taken away eventually. Enough people asked for it to rather not be there so I took it away. Unfortunately there's nothing I can do about them in the videos that are up as it's impossible to do an edit in that manner. Thanks for the feedback.
I wouldn't say the banners are annoying as such. They could just vary more, rotate less and be shown a bit longer. But I enjoy your channel and have learnt a lot!@@frontrowrugby

Actually i knew your dad well , you were named after Tiaan the rabbit. Your dad loved that rabbit. 😊
An absolute proper rugby player, what a hero and a Newlands legend!
He really was a wonderful player. South African rugby lost out by not having him play more Tests.
Tiaan was a legend. He could have done so many more for SA rugby.
A wonderful rugby player. Pity Kitch didn't think he could be in the same side as Francois Pienaar.
I reckon Michael Hooper modelled his game on Tiaan Strauss. Never quit, never beaten, attitude. Thanks for wonderful exciting memories Mr Stauss.
A very good observation. Hooper probably not the only player who saw Strauss and thought, "I need to do it like that!"

This is an excellent channel. Love hearing from the Springboks whose careers spanned the amateur and professional era
Thank you for those extremely kind words, Simon. I'm so happy you enjoyed the video and are liking this channel. All the best!
Absolute legend, humble with both feet on the ground!
100% A champion on and off the field.
Tiaan - true class, both as a player and as a guest. Another excellent, thoughtful interview - thanks and well done!
So glad you enjoyed it!! And yes, an outstanding player.

Tiaan was the Evan Roos of his day-a player who was better than the coaches favourite,so was sidelined.

Peter I got confused with Uli and Tiaan. Yes Uli is in Aus as GP and Tiaan is probably still a lawyer in SA. Keep up your great work.

Tiaan got such a raw deal from SA rugby. Must have been a quota issue...not enough Transvalers in the team! 🤣
Yes, at that time there were a lot of Transvaal guys in the team. Kitch brought them with him when he became coach.
