My other keyboard reviews: • Thomas' Keyboard Reviews
I'm Thomas and I do keyboard videos and reviews. Today we look at the Acer 6310 series, which includes the Acer 6311 (ANSI) and Acer 6312 (ISO). A series of hammers-over-membrane keyboards that's somewhere between Alps switches and buckling springs in theory, but quite distinct from either in practice.
The practice sentence was: "Hello my name is Thomas and I'm typing on an Acer 6312-KW right now. The poor man's Alps keyboard, it is nonetheless pretty damn good, especially for how common they are."
I love how in depth you get into this. When you start busting out the electron microscope you know you are dedicated
I found one of these in my office, a 6311-K from '96. Found it way back in 2016 and it was diiiirty af, but after dissassembling it, washing the plate, caps and cleaning the oxidation from the membrane, it worked as good as new, another cool thing about that board is that it had Chinese, Japanese and Latin legends on the keycaps, they're pad printed and yellowed af but I'm not willing to replace them. I have since given linearized it and gave it to my mom as her daily driver for her office PC.
the best keyboard reviewer returns
Thanks :) .
I recently bought a new old stock based on your advice. It’s a fantastic board. Nice switches, possibly better imho than white alps. Key caps, however, feel pretty light and is really the only negative. Thanks mate.
Old video now, I know, but I only just discovered your channel. Really enjoy your videos.
I have a lovely looking Acer 6312-K keyboard with 4 lights on it. I don't know how it was stored before I got it, but aside from a couple of tiny little scratches, it looks virtually new. No yellowing or anything. I have the matching Acer 386 PC to go with it, and the design perfectly match the look of the keyboard. I really like that keyboard. It looks absolutely fabulous, feels nice to type on and no windows keys! :D Perfect keyboard for my retro setup.
I'd love to see a REDUX of the Model F 122 review
Kyle Santiago with a stablized space bar.
I picked up this keyboard recently on ebay in a small cache. It's the K version, however something odd I noticed was it has a 5 pin din plug instead of the usual ps/2, with windows keys no less. Very crisp though, no roughness at all unlike my even slightly dirty Alps boards.
I quite really like hammer-over-membrane design, a brilliant move between cost-saving, key-feel-reservant, and maintenance measure if implemented properly (Tai-Hao Semi-mechanical is a great downside example). Some people tend to not like them because of its mushiness, or scratchiness on some variants, but I think they feel quite good and refined, especially feedback on actuation point even on linear one, which is my favorite.
I have the Alcatel MFII which has the J case style and UK layout. I bought it new as surplus sometime during the nineties. I still have it and it will never be sold, as I'm so used to it now. I love these Acer switches.
Well I'll be damned, I'm first! Good old university computer recycling. So much treasure to be had there.
Model F terminal redux! :)
Hi Thomas! Not sure if you see this, but your keyboard reviews are vere useful and informative for new people like me (I just found a cherry MY 3000 last week at the flea market and I'm quite happy with it)
I agree on Acers being beginner switches.
My first mech was a white Acer, a 6310K with the big bezels. Easy to disassemble, very easy to clean and they actually fee good, although bottoming out can get tiring sometimes with my newbie hands.
I still have a 6311 (K91/US) with white Alps and no Windows keys. I often still use it for gaming.
Is it really good? I going to buy a 6313, is it mechanical?
I have the Acros 6311-K also with no Windows Key. Love this keyboard. Edwin
I just found one from 1991 and got it for 6 euros, the keys are binding a bit on the corners dou, so I'm gonna try hoovering them as you said. Otherwise they feel great! Can't beat the model M which I also have dou.
I'd like to see a REDUX of that Oki gourd spring keyboard, would be great to hear them in action with better quality. Thanks.
i have an ACER 6311-N and i can't find any other N variants even being mentioned online
I just love that humanioric typeface it uses on keycaps. It's easier to read than Helvetica. Looks like it came from mid 2000s.
I had a K-case but with no win key with my first computer. Don't remember the model but it was obviously an Acer. The indicator lights on the keyboard were in the same style as those on the computer itself. Through using other keyboards I became dependent on the Win key so I got rid of it for some Microsoft keyboard.
I recently bought a model with case design H with windows keys. I love the case and it is completely in a greenish colour (looks a bit like oxidized copper). I like it, but the stabilizers are really.... they aren't great. the main shame about this keyboard though is that it has Azerty printing, but I guess I can't complain. I like this board. my first real retro board
The only issue I have noticed with these is that the click does not align perfectly with the registered button press, usually registering RIGHT before the sound. It is not noticeable during normal use, however.
I wish that Dell, Lenovo, and HP keyboard came with these switch and not pure rubberdome but it probably doesn’t matter now because you can get Eyooso mechanical keyboard for $19
Lol i just got one of these for $50 shipped off of ebay just for the cool factor. I know I probably could have found one in a bin somewhere around here but IMO its worth it for a cool keeb.
My model Acer 6311 isn't made for gaming because it can't use Shift + 2 more keys at once.
I just got hold of an Acer 6312-K (Extension No: 9G/GE) from 1993 with 4 green indicator lights. It is unbelievably clean and looks as if it is new. It has Acer (3H) black switches. I was just wondering if it makes sense to apply some lubricant to the switches? (If yes, what can be used as lubricant?--> Just found your vid on Alps restoration!) Thanks for your reviews!
I have a (sadly) nonfunctional 6311 model, which was my first mechanical keyboard. I actually really like the stiff action of the switch, it's part of the reason I didn't want to replace it with a lighter Cherry or linear switch system.
Some interesting quirks of my specific model include and AT connector instead of a PS/2 connector and being manufactured by Mitsumi for Acer. It also has a somewhat different case than the ones shown in the video, it's the same shape as the oldest model, but has some ridges cut into the forehead area of the case.
Mitsumi! What in god's name were THEY doing with the manufacture?!
Chyrosran22 I honestly couldn't tell you, I thought that rather odd myself
I have the Acros 6311-K also with no Windows Key. Has the 4-LED's. Love this keyboard. Edwin
I quite like the acer switch . The K case is amazing , always wanted one .
I found a NOS 6512 in the K case once. I think I showed it in my dome with slider megareview. The looks were ALMOST enough to keep it xD . Still have the caps though, as they're identical to KB-101A ones!
These reviews feel a bit like how Saturday morning cartoons. The Acer sounds quite nice, and I agree with you about serviceability. Petty much anything for review. Model F, Hall Effect, ...?
Old keyboards appear to be very rare in my locale. It seems as though one organisation or another has grabbed every old computer, cleaned and shipped them off. Probably commendable, but also annoying.
I ordered the 60% Matias Quiet Click via Massdrop. Surprised myself as I'm not a fan of that form factor, but my current keyboard's chatter is driving me insane, so I blame it. Any idea on where I can get good Alps keycaps?
Acer 6312 was my entry point into the hobby as well, even though I have better boards, it's still fun to type on. How about revisiting the -M97SK Dell board?
Recently, someone gave me an Acer 6311K in good condition. It's the one with the 4 leds, with the black Acer switches and membrane and it says manufactured date 28-11-1992. It surprised me that it has not become yellow at the top side, but only at the bottom. The keys are not yellow too. I cleaned it very carefully, but the switches were seems to stick a little and some of them were feeling a little scratchy.
I finally decided to remove the click leaf (as it is very easy to remove it and put it back) and they don't feel sticky or scratchy anymore! They became linear and they are extremely soft, like you are typing on a pillow! The nice is that you don't have to bottom them down, as they are responding pretty high, so the typing is very relaxed and pleasant.
Which modern switches have this kind of feeling from the linear ones? Could you please find what is the grams of force of these switches?
It would be nice if you could make a video about how you do them linearized and also to compare the filling with other linear switches.
I have the Acros 6311-K also with no Windows Key. Has the 4-LED's. Love this keyboard. Edwin
I wish I had recycling centres like the ones you have around me, every time I try to look up one the keyboards you mention they're usually over $50CAD on ebay etc.
Are we sure the Acer printing isn't a mixture of all the methods you mentioned?
How the hell do you get the back off the k case (mesh version) there seems to be a stopper near the cable that looks like it might snap if you force it.
Remake an Alps blue board!
I have the Acros 6311-K version with Acer Black switches and enjoy this keyboard. It was manufactured in Malaysia 4/13/1992 and does not have the "Windows" key(s). Acros was probably a division of Acer, but I really do not know the history of Acros! Edwin, USN-Retired [1961~1993]. Anyone that has knowledge of the Acros keyboards, please contact me. Thank you.
i got my hands on a brand new 6311k for about near 200 dollars it feels amazing. and its chalk white no sign of yellowing at all switches feel fantastic i barley use this board as i want to keep it brand new im the 1st one to ever type on it!
FYI Viglen were acquired by XMA in 2014...
You should do a REDUX on the Hi-Tek 725 keyboard with the linear space invaders
Oh hey. I still have the Acer 6311 that I've owned since I was 12. It looks like hell now, but it still works.
I have the Acros 6311-K also with no Windows Key. Has the 4-LED's. Love this keyboard. Edwin
The bottom out sound is very similar to a scorpius just not as bassy
I have no idea of how to remove the swiches from the case, can someone help me?
I just picked one up, thinking about linearizing it, any tips for that?
I had no idea how maintainable these switches are. Wish all switches were as easy to maintain.
Yes, it's definitely their most unique and interesting trait. A good trait to have nonetheless though!
Will there be a review of a keyboard with Romer-G switches coming in the near or not so near future? An experts opinion on them would really be nice.
Personally, I think they feel really similar to MX Browns. I don't understand what the big deal is with them.
These switches remind me a lot of the Apple scissor switches. You're all the way up or all the way down with a lot of tactility.
Yes, it's similar in a way, except these are full-height, full-travel.

Dell AT101 review REDUX REDUX
He already did a redux of one.
He didn't do a redux on the redux though
Technically I think it's the fourth time I've shot that video :p .
Hi Thomas, i can buy a 6512-TW almost for free, this ones have the same switchs as 6312? Thanks!
No, they are different. I've tried both and the 6312 is the best. The 6512 feels just like any other membrane keyboard.
How does a dome with slider switch compare to a rubber dome besides cap mount?
It varies hugely. Watch my dome with slider megareview, I showed exactly which ones are crap and which ones you should get.
Does that mean it is quite possible to replace rubber dome with acer switch? I'd be really interested to know. Thanks heaps!
No, rubber domes use mounts and systems that are basically incompatible with everything else.
Thank you for the ex-plainer, but I'd appreciate if you could elaborate further in details? i don't quite understand by "mounts" - do you mean mounting plate? these acer switch works over membrane... likewise rubber dome over membrane.
The keycap mount. Honestly there's not that much to explain though, they just work completely differently.
Which models of Acer boards come with PBT keycaps?
None that I know of.
I have a dutch version of this keyboard with a big ass enter.
Isn't the Dutch layout ANSI-based?
@@Chyrosran22 it's a US with the Euro on 5
Gotta amplify the microphone, I can barely hear you.
Can I have one?
