    Sir, I went to a local Thrift Store here in Kansas City, Missouri,USA and picked up the following Keyboards: IBM Personal AT Keyboard, Fijitsu FKB-4700-101 (2-Keyboards), and a BTC #743013804 60% Keyboard. I'm on the BTC and like it. One of the 4700's needs a "F3" Cap. You have one to spare. The IBM needs a good cleaning, but otherwise appears to be in excellent condition. It is very heavy! Enjoy your video's. Edwin, USN [1961~1993] Retired.

    I found my first dome with slider board for $1.99 at the thrift store yesterday. It's a "Micron" branded NMB RT101+ board. And when I was doing research online, it said boards with that model number were mechanical with Space Invader switches. But this one has NMB Dome With Slider switches. I really like the feel actually. I feel like after a good cleaning, it'll be a great board.

    • @Chyrosran22
      @Chyrosran22  6 лет назад +2

      RT-101+ means it's a 101-key keyboard with a bigass enter, technically it doesn't say anything about the switches. The FCC ID is a much clearer indicator of that. Still, NMB dome with slider is not half bad :) .

    I recently took out of my basement my first keyboard ever that was in storage for more than 20 years, the Packard Bell 5131C. I have several mechanical keyboards now, but this PB keeb is much better than any cheap membrane keyboard you can find now. So the ALPS board mentioned, I actually managed to grab a copy of it. I have the feeling the mushy/stiff feeling is due to the backplate being bend. On my board some off the keys, especially in the center are very smooth and quite nice, but when you move to either side of the board the keys get stiff and a bit mushy.

    The Mitsumi is what I still use. Not a Commodore one, their own KPQ's which are pretty much the same. I'm struggling to find a new/recent keyboard that feels the same, or to find clean enough (french AZERTY) KPQ's out there. Pretty sure there are plenty sold as "old keyboard" which I'll never find, or that there are plenty in a trash bin somewhere... and I can't find any :(
    Interestingly, I have 2, which I've kinda mixed as they were getting old & dirty. I've gotten sticky keys, maybe what you refer as spongy (they make kind of a rusty noise), it was two or three keys that didn't feel the same anymore. I really couldn't find out why, but it wasn't related to the rubber springs that's for sure, it was something deep inside that I couldn't fix. I could sometimes get them unsticky by messing with the hole, but they always got back to their weird state.
    I know that keyboard was also branded as Unisys, but that I can't find any either. What still active key technology or keyboard would you say feels the closest to a Mitsumi?

It was extremely dirty but it cleaned up pretty well and I converted the cable from a 5 pin to PS/2 (without any active conversion). the fujitsu peerless ones also get dirty and scratchy with age, and the keys like to stick or get hard to push down. I gave an FKB4700 to a friend that was used by a municipal building in a city not too far away. from what I gather he greased them up and they seem to be holding their own now as a seldom-used AT/XT keyboard.

    I recently found an AST-branded keyboard, model RT101. I got excited when I saw NMB and Hi-Tek on the back, thinking it was space invaders, but it looked instead to be NMB dome with slider. However, the switches feel very nice and it's a keyboard I wouldn't mind using at all. What's interesting is that it has a 5-pin DIN plug and a PC/AT switch on the back. Do you know anything about this keyboard?

    • @Chyrosran22

      I've just gotten something pretty similar, a Hyundai RT101+. It's really tough and heavy for a plastic keyboard, switches feel nice, and keyboard has a few nice ideas like a stabilization element under BAE that the wire stabs have contact with (and not with the keycap), and a coil spring under spacebar for additional return force.

    How does that BTC rubber dome stack up to mechanical switches? I have that olivetti keyboard you showed at the end and I like it, but I'm debating whether I should go with that linear modded Dell you made a video about or a BTC for fun. I've tried a handful of mechanical boards (AEK, AEK2, Model M/F, Focus 2001, zenith zkb-2, at101w unmodded) You gave the BTC a 9/10 so I'm sure you like it. I know this is a strange question but I'm just curious to find out what the best rubber domes are offering.

    • @Chyrosran22
      @Chyrosran22  8 лет назад

      +theryaner I'm typing on hte BTC right now as a matter of fact! It's very nice. See, when someone mentions "tactile" switches, I envision rubber domes more than mechanical switches. Mechanical I tend to envision as linear or clicky. Of course, rubber domes are hard to compare to mechanical switches because they feel so different, much more rounded if that makes sense. I really like the BTC, I genuinely think that as far as rubber dome with membrane keyboards go, this is in a class of its own. There's no reason you shouldn't be able to try both as these BTCs as well as AT101Ws are very common and very cheap - just make sure the BTC is dome with slider, not just rubber dome, and that the AT101W is in at least okay condition (although the linear modded version isn't as prone to dirt interference as the stock switch is). The linear mod on the Bigfoot is reversible btw, so if you don't like it you can just reverse it.

    I'd be curious to hear your thoughts on the Commodore 64's keyboard.
    I just got my hands on a stripped-out one that I'll be converting to a USB keyboard just for fun. (Don't worry--I'm not ruining a classic computer here; the machine itself died long ago and had been removed, leaving only the board--which I got for the very friendly price of nothing!) Typing on the thing is honestly quite terrible, but the spherical double shot caps are just irresistible. I'll probably use it for gaming as it has fairly firm linear switches, not to mention that retro look gets all the hipster points.

      Chyrosran22 Thanks! They seem pretty similar in terms of that foot (over a PCB in this case), although the one I've got uses coil springs that go around the slider, under the cap. I was surprised by how firm they are.
      The sliders / mounts aren't present in this image, but this is what the spring looks like: 2.bp.blogspot.com/-E1r8mON2d-Q/VYaDpS0ZkiI/AAAAAAAAE_I/zdMxjUfqsv0/s1600/Commodore%2B16%2Bkeyboard%2Bassembly.jpg

    I'm actually thinking if you could use different keycaps on your Monterrey dome with slider switch, including those KB-101 keycaps.

    I got a Monterey switch keyboard,defective,never used for the equivalent of U$8,the model sticker got removed,but it was manufactured in Brazil so it won't make a difference,i fixed it,typing on it right now,i can say that the keyfell is not that good,it is a lot scratchy,mushy,not much tactile,i think it depends on the model not the "switch" to determine the quality,the dome inside it is as small as a shitty HP one,the sliders are colored in various shades of pink,at least it came with mildly yellowed doubleshot ALPS keycaps.

    you should do a joke video on 'best rubber dome keyboards and switches" and laugh at how many people take it seriously.

      Wouldn't be a joke really, as he said some rubber dome boards are actually quite decent.
