Old World Automatons; The Mechanical Chess Player Hoax + The Speaking Machine (18th Century Tech)

  • Howdy. Today we will look at what is now considered a lavish hoax, one that went on for roughly 84 years, involving an Automaton Chess Player known as The Turk. The Automaton defeated all competition while touring the world, including Napoleon Bonaparte and Benjamin Franklin.
The machine was created in 1769 and completed and presented in 1770. Today this achievement in engineering is considering a hoax, however, for 84 years of 18th and early 19th Century history this machine was accepted by the brightest minds in the world as a true automaton.
Furthermore, this automaton was eventually fitted with The Speaking Machine, a truly pioneering invention which mimicked human speech. The Automaton and The Speaking Machine are both credited to the same man, Wolfgang Von Kempelen. Let’s take a deeper dive.

A mechanical device programmed by computer assist. The most difficult part of the whole mechanism is the rotating drum with tiny pegs which operate all of the mechanical cams. The timing and placement of these pins is critical, and that is where the real work is. Without computer aid, it would be trial and error, and take 50 years for a man to work out the formula. I build mechanical devices and tools and can tell you that I would be long dead before 10 movements of that incredible machine were completed. Thanks for the great work!

I think we have had all this technology since rome the king would hand pick incentors to create anything he or they wanted.
The economy was based on war not free trade then so any inventions that were created they could not be sold to market without the kings approval. And ofcourse the king would hoard all technology and inventions
And many inventions were not worth selling to the common slave or knight.

I think we are being mocked. Nikola tesla spoke of automatons. In the future.
I think at the old expositions they showed much higher technology.
And everything we have is back engineered.
If rome acutally was that advanced who know whay technology they actually have. The empire was founded on slaves.

Well sure they could exist, looking at the other fantastic things that have been found and then when you think about the technology they were using to build everything else in the Old World, they just didn't do much of it for those people had way more interesting things to do and create. A gifted watch maker has the talent to do something like that. We have to be very careful about believing the narrative stories about who did what back then because I am sure many of these things were " founded " and given to the most likely people who could study and copy the inner workings of these toys.
Toys to the old world Masters, fantastic tech. To those in power in the early 1800s. Some parts of each and every story is going to be a lie, a cover up, a ... look over Here ! God how I'd love to be able to go back to those days with a good camera, video unit, etc.
And bring back the REAL story of those days in the 13 and 1400s. Shaking hands with a chest faced man and woman, and the Dog people! And then of course, the 18' humans that were everywhere. 😊😊😊

10 OBSERVATIONS CONCERNING THE INCREASE OF MANKIND
      23. In fine, A nation well regulated is like a Polypus; take away a limb, its place is soon supply 'd; cut it in two, and each de ficient part shall speedily grow out of the part remaining. Thus if you have room and subsistence enough, as you may by dividing make ten Polypes out of one, you may of one make ten nations, equally populous and powerful; or rather, increase a nation ten fold in numbers and strength.
And since detachments of English horn Britain sent to America, will have their places at home so soon supply'd and increase so large ly here; why should the Palatine Boors be suffered to swarm into our settlements, and by herding together establish their languages and manners to the exclusion of ours? Why should Pennsylvania, founded by the English, become a colony of Aliens, who will shortly be so numerous as to Germanize us instead of our Anglifying them, and will never adopt our language or customs, any more than they can acquire our complexion?
      24. Which leads me to add one remark: That the number of purely white people in the world is proportionably very small. All Africa is black or tawny. Asia chiefly tawny. America (ex clusive of the new comers) wholly so. And in Europe, the Span iards, Italians, French, Russians and Swedes are generally of what we call a swarthy complexion ; as are the Germans also, the Saxons only excepted, who with the English make the principal body of white people on the face of the earth. I could wish their numbers were increased. And while we are, as I may call it, scouring our planet, by clearing America of woods, and so making this side of our globe reflect a brighter light to the eyes of inhabitants in Mars or Venus, why should we in the sight of superior beings, darken its people? why increase the sons of Africa, by planting them in Ameri ca, where we have so fair an opportunity, by excluding all blacks and tawneys, of increasing the lovely white and red? But perhaps I am partial to the complexion of my Country, for such kind of partiality is natural to Mankind.
