0:00:20 In his famous research paper "Gears From The Greeks" historian Derek De Solla Price put forward a stunning theory regarding the device known as the Antikythera Mechanism. That the origins of our modern day engineering achievements, what he called our "recent age of High Technology", could be found in this ancient device. He theorised that the profession of clock and instrument making had acted as a silent "carrier" of a larger, and much older technology tradition.
01:08 Clockmakers, he said, had played a crucial role in the emergence of our modern world, and that the clockmaking tradition itself, was part of a distinguished main line of technology that could be directly traced all of the way back to the Antikythera Mechanism.
01:25 The Ancient Greeks had written the original language of the mechanical engineer, and had left behind a record of it in this incredible device. A calculating machine, that used complex mathematics and precise engineering to model the Ancient Greek understanding of the Cosmos.
02:01 The phase of the moon, retrograde motion of the planets, and even barely observable details like the precession of the lunar orbit, were all modelled according to Ancient Greek astronomical theory.
02:23 Now I should point out that this is not the first time that someone has made a version of the Antikythera Mechanism, in fact far from it. There have been more than a dozen reproductions that I'm aware of, the most notable of which are the two constructed by Michael Wright.
02:58 But there will also be plenty of opportunity to investigate some of the construction, as it would have been undertaken but the original maker more than 2000 years ago. The data for the reproduction will be sourced from the latest research, mostly from the published work of Tony Freeth and his colleagues of the Antikythera Mechanism Research Project.
03:18 I've used his published gear schematics, and dimensions, together with the raw scan data to generate what I think is a faithful CAD model of the mechanism.
04:04 So while I will cast the raw stock for some of the parts from a homemade bronze, for convenience I'll make the majority of the device from commercially available brass stock.
04:32 These elements will be reflected in the reproduction, but the wood case presents a small problem with regard to this video series. It would obstruct a lot of the mechanism, and prevent you from seeing everything as its being built, and we can't have that.
05:00 At the end of the project, I can either remove the pillars entirely, and replace them with the original wooden structure.

Chris- I know you're an extreme traditionalist, but due to the beautiful complexity of the mechanism, would you consider an acrylic case, possibly with LED lights to really show off your handiwork?
Hey Zach, appreciate the suggestion, but definitely no modern materials or technology - It will become clearer as the build progresses why this must be so, but its essential that the device be as consistent as possible with the historical evidence. The end result will still showcase the internals of the mechanism, but it will be done in a way that fits the evidence - Cheers mate :)
Could you use hand-poured glass, or would it simply not be clear enough to show the goodies?
The main issue with using glass/acrylic etc is that such materials are inconsistent with the idea of making a faithful reproduction - there was no glass in the original. Using different materials compromises the idea of it being a true reproduction, and turns it into something else. An interpretation rather than a reproduction. There are already many interpretations of the device, there s no point in doing another.
What has *not* been done before is a *genuine reproduction*, right down to the finest detail. To the very last pin and rivet. By following this meticulous route, there will be an opportunity to do some serious "engineering archaeology" - but the device needs to be the real deal, or the conclusions drawn about the engineering techniques would be meaningless.
Clickspring it's awesome to see how traditionalist you are. Are you going to include theories as to how the original gears were cast/shaped up? I find it hard to believe such mechanical precision from so long ago

Hey Folks, I'm back on deck for 2017 and we're off and running! I very much appreciate your support and encouragement with the videos, and I want to thank you for sharing them, it makes a HUGE difference to how much they get viewed - please keep sharing with anyone you think might be interested.
Re the build approach: I am aiming for maximum authenticity with the reconstruction, so I'm ruling out the use of any modern materials, including glass/acrylic etc for the final casing. This might sound a bit extreme, but I have a good reason for doing this.
By strictly adhering to the original artifact in all areas, we will all have a fantastic opportunity to do something that to my knowledge has never been done before with this device: To make a detailed examination of the problem solving of the first Engineers - all of the good, and all of the "less than good". The device is *packed to the brim* with engineering precedents that we all take for granted today. But there are also quite a few engineering decisions that went down an evolutionary dead end. Its essential that I keep everything authentic to ensure that we can all see why the good solutions survived, and the others were abandoned over time. This includes a wooden support structure. One way or another, the internals will be easily viewable at the end of the project, and protected from dust - it will just be using a method that is consistent with the original device.

Clickspring hey Chris I was thinking about your idea with the wood and brass pillars supporting the device and what if you used a more modern acrylic or maybe a glass or stained glass with different supports throughout or you could have something like small windows in the wood shell in key areas so you can see how the device is working and what's going on while it moves I love your videos keep up the incredible work

I think a little swearing in comments is the least of your worries, especially if your kid is mature enough to enjoy these videos, there is far worse in the supposedly kid friendly videos youtube's algorithms suggest to a lot of children.

I'm hyped for this series. I'm sure it'd going to be even more awesome than the skeleton clock. For the casing you may use plexi glass, it's easy to shape however you want, and you can see through it.
When ever I get that notification of a new video from Clickspring I stop what I'm doing. When you where 1-2 videos from finishing your skeleton clock I was over in Italy for vacation and had to sit down and watch it.

The day I heard about the original mechanism disproved most of the history I had ever learned - the day I discovered your series had the same effect on my ability to work with hand tools. Well there would not be gratification if it was WHAAM clock is done. This way piece by piece u see details and slowly it turns into what it is. Depending on how much time you invest yes it's gonna take 2 years lol

I like the columns. always thought Michaels wooden box to be something you would buy shoes in. maybe some greek carvings or bronze cast panels might do it justice. ive been thinking about this build, you have some seriously interesting machining to do, the spirals on the dial for a start. really excited to see how you tackle this! very exciting.
Its gonna be a hoot for sure Emma! Agreed on the box needing to be as delicate and pleasing as possible. I'm aiming for maximum authenticity throughout the build, so will likely go for the wooden casing suggested by the recovered artifact. There is some evidence that pillars may have been used in the construction process, and then subsequently removed and replaced with the wooden casing, so I think leaving some (or even all) of the pillars in place after the build is complete will sit ok too. Cheers mate :)
Well it`s only an idea, and I suspect your very far along or possibly even finished building it. The only possible and logical way to keep it as authentic as possible (which I agree with) and still properly display the internal workings as they should be would be to make two of them. :-) Clear plastic of any type used as a case on the exterior would cheapen the whole effort. Proper float glass at the minimum would be my vote. This should be an amazing build series and I`m looking forward to it very much Chris.Some interesting machining challenges in that for sure.

I suspect that the original Antikythera machine is actually the one that we are about to see Chris build and it fell out of the time machine that he is bound to build at some point.
I can already see that this will be my favorite series of videos on any media source. Absolutely can't wait to see these parts grow into a completed device.
Would something like a combination of the pillars and plexiglass be possible for the casing to enclose it but leave it visible? or would that detract from the overall quality of the build?
I'm aiming for maximum authenticity, so that rules out modern materials like acrylic and plate glass. I will likely go for the wooden casing of the original artifact + pillars in a hybrid form to open it up.Whatever display option I go with, its important to me that it be consistent with the evidence of the recovered wreckage.

While Clickspring goes for authentic which is wood, you can of course substitute it with Acrylic if you build it yourself. Thats what i would do. And i would probably even add some lighting in there.

These should have been full length episodes; 30 mins or more. This subject is far too interesting for these short vids. I do appreciate the work put in for these no doubt.
Couldn't you replace the outer case with a clear acrylic case? This would allow the project to be totally visible after completion.

I still think it would be cool to be able to see the workings without the risk of damaging them, but it is your project and I stand by your decisions in the construction.
Clickspring Why not make two interchangeable enclosures-one that's original, and another that allows viewing of the mechanisms?
I have just started watching this Amaizingly good video series for the... Actually I've lost count of how many time over the past few years. Thanks Chris, your videos are still my go to when needing to chill and see something of absolute beauty being created with incredible precision and narrated so eloquently, informative and insightful.
One of the things that occured to me when watching this was how special the people were that could appreciate such a device. People today have become so intellectually lazy, they could never appreciate the joy of understanding even how to read it.

Amazing series. Top notch. Landed here after listening to lecture on Antikythera mechanism in an Ancient Astronomy lecture series. Very helpful to understand what this machine looks like and fully appreciate the absolute beauty of it from a technological and technical capacity point of view. It points out how advanced human technology was in places on the earth in the ancient world.
