Thanks for the video. Good thing I found this video. I have been trying to locate a leak near the steer pump. I have noticed that the area is all covered with dry oil.
FYI, the part number for the timing cover gasket is: 113280P010. Bit pricey, $14 picked up at my local dealership but worth it for me and the peace in mind.
Sheesh. Clean before removing cover. I saw debris go straight into the engine. RTV is not toothpaste. Squeeze out is going to end up in the oil pick up.
Go very softly on those bolts! Just did it and think i may have stripped a hole just doing a firm by hand tightening. Super quick and easy fix. Local dealership gasket was $35! Toyota Seal Pack 103 FIPG is amazing stuff, I use it all the time, be that a Honda, Lexus, Chevy Ford, whatever needs to be sealed, Toyota FIPG is what I use! Here it is: amzn.to/3s09hLB
it's the same engine in the 5th gen 4runner as well as others. my '16 4runner has seepage around that area and i'll have to remove a lot to get to it it seems. i'll find out soon.
@@bundysgarage thanks for the reply! The 16 Tacoma is a little harder to get at. These engineers keep making life more difficult for everyone......where the bolts all m10 x ????
@TheEndsMeatShow the other leak would be the timing chain cover- there was a recall that has long since expired. a lot of billable mechanic hours to change the timing chain cover gasket. very expensive. mine has been leaking for months. I smell oil when driving, stain on my driveway. but......have not lost any oil according to dipstick....(?) a small seepage can make a big mess. im going to try this fix this weekend and clean the entire area best I can with brake cleaner. if it isn't the 4x4 inch cover mentioned in this video the leak is just behind this cover on the timing chain cover, if it ends up being the timing cover I'll just keep driving it and monitor the oil loss. if it gets worse I'll pay my mechanic. @@TheEndsMeatShowits the entire timing chain cover leak. You need to google it. In that "other leak" from what i have there is a depression in the engine block of about 1mm a design fault fixed from 2009 prados onwards. Dang. I wonder if this explains the super light seeping I see on that side of my engine. It doesn't effect the oil level but I sure see it. I'm gonna have to try this.
I noticed the bottom where the plate seats is dry no oil residue when you took it off .. does that mean if its moist. The issue is the timing chain cover ?
Torque spec is 80 INCH pounds....its in the Engine Mechanical pages.....page EM-124 of the 2006 4Runner manual... Pretty much the same as the valve cover gasket bolts...+/-
For tacoma 4.0L, it's Engine Mechanical EM-55, Camshaft (For Bank 1): Comopnents (Tacoma) where it'll have a blow up diagram and the torque spec which is, 80 in pounds which is the same!

Looking back I should have scraped the old gasket off. Then applied the Toyota seal pack. It is not leaking at the square. But on these engines the timing chain cover is known to leak in seeing oil leaking (very slowly) from there. The leak is right next to where the square cover sits so it’s hard to tell the difference. But I know for a fact the square was leaking cause it was dripping onto the oil water pump. Where the one for the timing chain cover will leak towards the back near the power steering pump.
I should have but to let everyone know, even though I didn’t take off the old gasket, it’s not leaking. The Toyota FIPG is holding up just like it was made to do.
Yo.. is this the same leak ToyotaMaintenance is referencing in this vid? ruclips.net/video/1yYmO4v9MVM/видео.html They mention it being a costly repair, but your vid definitely shows it's not. Did you remove parts to get easy access to the cover?
Thanks for this!! I’ve been watching this leak for years and didn’t know how simple it was to fix. Appreciate it!

Thanks fr the video sir
I wish I found this before ordering my valve cover gaskets
Did you get your V covers done?
I would still get that gasket. After 110k miles on mine was basically hard plastic and crumbled when I removed it. Also the intake gasket was bad too.
Have my 4Runner 16years now n it have engine leaking
That cover u change is the engine oil leaking from there sir
that's exactly where I've been seeing oil on the engine, looks like a super easy fix, thank you!
Why do they need that holes for>>> Toyota need to seal that holes to prevent leak?
@@ThepDenNgoaiBien my leak ended up being from the timing chain cover, the assembling machine did not add enough liquid gasket to seal it.

thanks for this information
If no leak...no need to change right?? my tacoma is 2007 200,000 miles no leaks yet!
do you need to drain the oil before doing this? attempting this on a 16 Tacoma on Friday
No you do not need to drain the oil to do this. If you need an oil change it’s a good time to do it but no you don’t need to drain the oil otherwise.

80 "inch" pounds = 6.7 "feet" lbs, so very little effort. Snug them up and you will be good.
Wish I had understood how low the torque for this was. I firmed them down and think I may have stripped one corner bolt.
Get a 1/4 drive torque wrench

The way he did it is fine if you change your oil afterward. Otherwise, Spray it on a rag and wipe clean the whole surface.

can you change the tensioner by removing that cover? or is it only for inspection?
It’s only for inspection. If you pop out the tensioner how are you going to keep tension on the chain?
Won’t the chain guide keep the chain in place while replacing the chain tensioner? I’m also curious about this.
Does anyone have the video for the valve cover gasket for this

Definitely potential for leakage on the other side of the gasket that is not resealed now.
