      @@MakeMagic There's nothing wrong with it, I understand em. Being that these new products are based off of devices that are held in such high esteem,the comparison and love/hate is going to be there. I don't like using a PC, so the idea of the cloud in vintage looking chassis appeals to me. In the end as long as it sounds good and I can create with it, then I'm a happy man.

    Great comparison and demo! But I love reading the comments and seeing so many people say things like "Nothing beats the warm vintage electronics of the 106. The 106 wins hands-down." In a raw or exposed comparison like this of course you're going to hear differences. There are so many variables, it's impossible to get them to sound perfectly the same. Yet in context in a song or live performance, I'm pretty sure not a single person would be able to tell if it's the 106 or X. Technology has come so far that in real-world applications the difference between vintage and emulation is negligible at best. No one cares if you're using true vintage electronics or not. Just chill and make good music with whatever works best.

      What about musicians just wanting to make music with instruments that truly inspire them?
      Of course the Juno X is perfect for gigs, but what about wanting to have inspiring instruments to play and create on?
      And no Vst or digital emulation I’ve played or heard has ever truly solved the voice allocation differences between vintage analog synths and digital recreations. Play some 5 and 6 note chords on those machines and the difference will be immediately felt and heard. Nothing does vintage analog like vintage analog.

    Another highly creative synth by Roland, Thank you for showing us. Been trying to understand the need for a copy of a vintage synth for a decade now. Musicians want the "exact" sound duplicated...okay...for nostalgia or because you wanted one at the time and couldn't buy one. I understand this second chance at a synth you missed out on. For me it was the JD800 and the JP8080, but I don't buy old synths because I play them long and hard, and old synths are going to fail, I can't afford the repair costs, if repairable. I had an analog Juno and a 707 I bought new in the 80s. I didn't like them, I still don't, since I lived at that time there isn't a mystery to them, todays synths are far superior in creating new original sounds. I am always looking for highly sound creative synths, but not in the past. The analog resurgence of the 2000s showed me how well digital and analog can work together in creating new sounds never heard. Today I think the real skill of a keyboardist, besides being a master of their instrument, is understanding sound and effects design and the layering of different synths (analog and digital) and knowing ahead of time how they will sound together. (applies only to recording, stage use is, most the time, completely different).

    The Juno X perhaps is 2 percent different. However with its XLR outputs, higher polyphony, the ability to turn off the hiss on the chorus, and all the additional sounds makes it the best choice for someone who wants authentic Juno sound. I wonder if they made some mild updates on it over the Jupiter X to get closer to the Juno 106

    • @qlyde
      @qlyde 2 года назад +5

      Your points make sense, but for me I feel like why not just use their plugin if you’re not getting an analog synth? If I’m spending $2000 on hardware I want analog. Trust me a lot of these extra features are stuff you wouldn’t miss on analog synths. The Prophet 6 is my main Poly synth, It’s unbelievable and don’t ever feel limited. If I want to do some more complicated stuff I’ll use a plugin. If this Juno X hardware synth is using their Zen technology then it’s the same sound engine as the plugin anyway, so use the Juno plugin and put $2000 towards a use analog synth or a new Korg Prologue 16.
      Also hardware is hardware right, with the plugin you can use 4 of them simultaneously if you want but you can’t do that with hardware. You need set up 2 tracks in your DAW (Midi & Audio) then play in the part, edit the midi, print the audio, move on to the next track. If you wanna go back and change something, you gotta do it all over again. If it’s not analog, it’s not worth the hassle of hardware and $2000 out of my bank account imo.

    Similar sounds, but the modulation depths and envelope settings/attack/decay shapes probably didn't match entirely (also I wonder if it's possible to limit polyphony to the same as the original 106 - note stealing has a big impact on the overall sound). In the end it doesn't matter that much, the X can no doubt produce a lot of nice sounds and can sound more analog with some detuning/modulation, the more important question to answer is does the UX suck or is it better than the Jupiter X/Xm. It certainly looks intuitive in terms of the panel for 106 style sounds, but the other synth models maybe have some menu diving e.g. for modulation assignments (and Roland menu diving is not so fun in my experience)? It would be interesting to test wide & slow pitch modulation on high notes with a saw wave to hear if there's any significant aliasing - I'd like to know the details of the waveform generation and if it's wave-table based, how much oversampling, internal sample rate, and what kind of sample point interpolation is used (I develop synth plugin software - so this is my concern, probably not so interesting for most folk). How about a comparison with the ACB version of the 106 model?

    Much of the difference seems to be owing to differences in polyphony. Cutoffs after 6 notes (Juno-106) seem to "unclutter" the soundscape. The greater polyphony on the Juno-X leads to a perceived mushiness or lack of clarity. I think a "note limit" feature could clear this up.

    Hello mr tuna. Your juno 106 has a worn gain switcher that's why it crashes! It is a very common problem in junos. I recommend that you take it out and cancel that switcher system, bypassing it (you are left with the highest gain and you can continue controlling it with the volume potentiometer). I did it to mine thanks to my technician and it sounds hyper mega HD! You will not regret it! Greetings from Argentina!

    Vintage 106 sounds more vibrant, alive and when the high resonance gets engaged on that slow envelope at 7:30 its game over for the digital X. I think this is where Zencore reaches its limits. ACB did the high resonance better. As Juno users know, that wild filter is where its really at (DP - Rollin & Scratchin !!). They did a good job on the hardware though, seems more inviting than the Jupiter-X.

      @@MRTUNA I'm an amateur music producer and synth collector but for my day job I'm an industrial designer. If it were me, I would have used small colour-change LEDs located above the buttons as they appear on the original JUNO 6/60/106. The glassy buttons are too contemporary for a retro styling project.
      I know Roland is playing to the nostalgia factor, and competing with Korg's reissues of famous synths, but wouldn't it be cool if they simply did a JUNO-206 or a betaJUNO with completely new contemporary styling?

      I prefer, simple, elegantly designed and well-built (metal and wood) instruments that stand alone without requiring plug-ins, plug-outs, VSTs or outboard apps to utilize all the features. Behringer's VC340 is a good example. Korg has also done a nice job with their re-releases/updates of the Korg 700 and the ARP clones.

    • @ErraticFaith
      @ErraticFaith 2 года назад

      We're competing with Korg? Amusing but not so much no. They don't have the footprint. Sys8 is not in the same device category; that's one place where people are going wrong. Certainly it has the sonic ability - but the intention of the underlying design/tech is very different. Jupiter/Juno/Fantom are in a range to which you cannot apply sys8. That's intentional. Comparing them is obviously possible but mistakes the purpose of the different instruments.
      As far as cost goes - it's at the low end price bracket for our musicians generally. Would seem as if your economy isn't what it was.

The analog is more 3d and punchy and the digital is a bit more flat dynamically. The actual sound character is spot on though it just the analog jumps out at you ever so slightly. Would take the x without complaint and throw it into a punchy compressor to give it a bit more pop. Maybe there are some settings under the hood you can mess with too? Maintenance isn't too bad if you keep it clean and play it periodically to keep sliders and buttons functional. The known chip issue is also pretty easy to fix with a jar of acetone and a soldering iron.

      If you have a Juno specialist restore & future proof it you should only have to repair a vintage model once. I had Belltone Synthworks do this for me and it is rock solid and better than it ever was new. Your local electronics repair shop will most likely not be able to do that for you.

      @@pliocenemusic8667 I had it done 10 years ago my 106 has also been rock-solid ever since. The secret is to have the restored voice boards put back using sockets instead of soldering them directly to the motherboard. That way any future service is simply plug-n-play.

    It’s funny, they’re close, but when I close my eyes I always know which Is which. There’s more fuzz and imperfection in the original 106. I have a 106 I’ve used for 7 years daily, so I know it fairly well.

    with so many Juno virtual clones I guess what's the point of this keyboard especially if the fantom 0 is also Zen core and cheaper? Couldn't you just save money and get a lifetime key for what's not in the fantom? The X sounds good so can't deny that.

    • @MRTUNA
      @MRTUNA  2 года назад +1

      The juno is more about performance than the fantom is... i really appreciate the 1/1 control face for the juno sound and the easy stack split layers. Fantom is really cool but there just too much menu digging for what i want to do on it. anyone that already has a fantom tho the JunoX is probably redundant unless you want something really cool on stage

    Nearly bought a 106 40 years ago(ish) got a computer instead - still work in IT industry - but also have synths - regret the 106 decision a bit. Those are two nice synths - would buy the new one if had to choose (for new features).

    Sounds great. I've always said "near as makes no difference" when referring to the Jupiter 8 vs X - but in many instances here I actually prefer the cleaner and more consistent sound of that Juno X vs the 106.
    People seem to be judging the Juno X much more harshly than they did the Jupiter - I wonder if its because a Juno X costs more than a used 106 does... whereas JP8 prices are so inflated that a JPX costs like 5x less. Different yardstick perhaps.

    • @MRTUNA

      good perspective on the pricing---- and for interests sake in this video (and in all my recordings of the Jupiter-X / Juno-X) I have the age set to 0 years. I dont know that i need to 'mimic' the nuances of a vintage synth by purposefully adding elements of randomness to my patch, but its something that I'm going to explore in another video

    Listening on my most analytical earphones (Shure 425) and I only just hear the difference. It's 95%+ there for me. Having owned numerous vintage Rolands every single one of which developed critical issues, this is the one for me (but I'll wait a while, and won't be paying full RPP).

    I assume it's kind of pointless but i would like to hear if there any differences between Juno X and Jupiter X or will those two might in any way complement each other. I know both are Zen core based, both can loaded with similar virtual machines ...but since you have Juno in your hands.... ?

    • @MRTUNA

      There is no capable difference between the two synths as they can both play the same models that are available on Roland Cloud, but the specific Jupiter-X model and the specific Juno-X model that is housed in either synth are unique to both at this point which i could definitely do a comparison on! but for example the Juno-106 engine that comes standard in both the JPX an the JunoX is 100% identical
