Omg I can just imagine the work and time… but I can also imagine the pain from and exhaust leak or having to change out the turbo etc. Still a great build I wonder how it goes. I’ve converted mine into the easiest 300 to work on and those BDE top rails are king for injector replacements.
The BDE rails are magic aren’t they! Thankfully in our case turbo replacement is very easy and using v band throughout the only real problem area from exhaust leaks are the header to manifold gaskets. Which aren’t actually that painful in the Z31 engine bay in our configuration
Hey there! By chance could you put in the description all the aftermarket parts and brand names of each that went into this by chance?? Awesome stuff 🤘🏼
Absolutely sik vid and build fellas! Even though I had a small epileptic fit at the start of the vid, I loved every second of watching a genius at work James 😂 Your attention to detail is bloody inspiring👌🏼😎
Nice clip! Ever try doing copper head gaskets for an EJ boxer motor? I know they're a pain because of the water jackets, exhaust sealant to the max. Would love to see how you'd do that. Cheers. Edit: Meant for decomp 2mm lol.
Are you able to do the same with the na motors ? I've really been wanting to see if there's a way to fully forge the na motors and get it low compression for boost
Hey mate! At a high level, we used the z32 engine and gearbox, z31 trans mount, z32 ally engine mounts with rubber mounts from an e30 BMW to sit the engine lower (also cut the skeleton out of the hood above the engine. Like that it just bolted in. Tail shaft is a two piece from Daniels engineering using a centre bearing from a VL commodore, wiring was done using a haltech Elite 2000 with the plug and play z32 harness, along with a replacement z32 engine harness from wiring specialities which we spliced into the z31. Clutch hydraulics is all still Z31.
I know for a fact the head gasket failed before anything else. Oem is king with these engines when it comes to gaskets. Spray copper spray on it next time
Stock TBs, headers were done my Spreadcheese fabrication (he did an amazing job) the down pipe is straight down under the car to 3’ oval tube exiting in front on the passenger rear wheel
Hey guys. Fyi the vg30det does not just relate to single turbo. They have a different style heads and intake + exhaust manifolds. Hopefully with the engine apart you cleaned all the flashing out of the coolant gallery through the block. Also didn't see if you did or not but tack the bolts of the counterweight on. Also if they were mls gaskets put a coolant pressure sensor on it. I have had nothing but dramas with them and gone back to a stock style gasket. If you are interested i got my vg30 videos on this channel.
We just had a look, impressive stuff! The DET, was an oversight, as per the title, it is of course a DETT. We certainly did, a good friend who’s into VGs actually mention it to us as well before we started the build. Once I saw how bad the flashing was there was no way it was staying. Interesting note about issues with MLS gaskets, I’ll heed the warning and fit a pressure sensor, Cheers mate!
@@SparesboxAuto good shit. Yeah the mls seem to be hit and miss. Once power is made everyone goes back to stock or exotic gaskets. The cometic ones lasted a little while on my engine but eventually leaked between the layers. And tomei usa it is a well known fact quailty isnt there. Fresh surfaces and didn't seal at all. Stock can be hard to find these days but i get head gaskets made from gasket solutions in qld.
I second issues with MLS gaskets. VGs just don’t seem to like them, it’s generally accepted in the 300zx community that the best head gasket for these engines are OEM. Sick build guys, looks crazy!
You're not wrong. I was racing mine at Manfield (NZ) and melted a piston. After tearing it down for a rebuild I noticed so much casting slag in the number 6 water feed that I couldn't even get the tip of my pinky in the tiny hole. After much gnashing of teeth and skinned knuckles, I managed to open the whole water system up with a die grinder.
A multitude of factors, besides us wanting to showcase a few of the awesome products sparesbox has on offer like the Garrett turbo (which for sparesbox is a key component, we also had the turbo on a shelf waiting for a project it might suit) up it also removed a lot of complexity and made it a surprisingly easy car to work on. Additional benefit was obviously trying to make an interesting video and do things a little differently. Keeping the factory TT arrangement was heavily considered however and the car would’ve been completely capable with it.
Nice VG build we need more of them!

Phenomenal job James, keep up the good work Sparesbox
It's always nice to see another channel with good camera angles and clear quality.
Great video guys! James you’ve done an epic job on this thing!
I think there should be a mandatory sound clip after a build like this
VG 🔥
This video was sooo satisfying to watch ... I swear... just so calming

Love the synth music! Can’t wait to see it run!
Love it. You should upload the raw footage if you have any
Once upon a glove, in a land far, far away
Amazing video🔥
Id love a full parts list so i can rebuild my vg30dett if you have any? awesome video!!
Awesome video guys!!!
That 10mm looks good 👍 😋
All of ours went missing, had to get a new one just for this build. It’s currently AWOL
now if only I could do this to my 50AE
Gorgeous 😮💨
Awesome 👌magnificent workwhat atalent
Always wondered if the dett heads and induction system would work on a vg3.3 short block, for more cubes.
Awesome, can I do the same thing with a na vg30de?( in America, 90-96 Infiniti J30, 90-96 300zx)
Nice

Looked good, but I'll bet you've encountered two problems, throwing the power steering belt and blowing a head gasket, correct?
Is that just a mock up location for the turbos? That oil drain would require a scavenge pump
Did you quench the knock by putting the car on e85? I know it works on vg30de turbos because high compression creates knock but e85 solves that
holy cow...
My Vg30dett needs bottom end rebuilt. Prices have gone way up!! Sucks. It ran with a dripping injector, damaged a rod bearing.
Anyway we can get a parts list?
Are all those parts available in Australia?
Are you able to do the same with the na motors ? I've really been wanting to see if there's a way to fully forge the na motors and get it low compression for boost
Yes, just buy your forged internals.
I would love to put a vg30det in my Z31. I’m curious how much work it Tom making this all come together

i need this done to my z 😂

How much to build this motor
Stock sized TB's? Who fabbed the headers? How does the downpipe route or is it dumping out the fender or something?
Stock TBs, headers were done my Spreadcheese fabrication (he did an amazing job) the down pipe is straight down under the car to 3’ oval tube exiting in front on the passenger rear wheel
🔥
Would had been better if we all hear it run.
Any update on this ?
James here, car is now owned personally by myself and a mate, she’s still alive and kicking!
@@grouphistorics138 Yayy, hopefully you’ll post some videos of it
Interesting oil drain....
It works, doesn’t look like it’s downhill here but it is

nice build sequence , but you missing a toybo
One seems ok for this especially when it’s a pretty Garrett 3576 GTX gen2, though early on we had planned to keep the twins
Noice
na water pump pulley no go.
