I remember watching this video summer of 2016 before start of my most intense nursing semester. I loved this video and applied everything when studying. I respected your hard work you applied when studying and I dedicated the same amount of hard work to all my classes especially med surg. Never got a chance to write this to you, but seriously thank you dude! I passed my advanced med surg with the highest grade in my school 99%. It was actually the highest at that time has anyone scored in that tough med surg course overall. Now I’m in two years of nursing and was looking up preps of certifications and came across this video again :) Thanks again man!
I am in my first semester, and I used a small whiteboard to study for my second exam and got a 94%. Didn't use the white board for the 3rd exam and had a hard time remembering the content. I somehow ended up with an 88 on that test. The teacher revised some parts of the test when grading which helped but I knew I could do better. So for the 4th exam today I studied using my white board, and I got a 98! This method truly is golden! Although I must say I'm jealous of your big white board, I'm trying to convince my mom to let me put one in the dining room lol.
This was great!! I think practice questions are really good for people that just struggle with test taking in general and also NCLEX style questions. A tip that my professor gave me when I didn't do well even after doing a lot of practice questions is - do as many practice questions as you can, and stop two days before the exam. Do them as you go along (like when you finish learning about renal.. Start the renal questions) and don't do ANY the day before the exam, just study your notes. Most people won't need to follow this but for people that really struggle with test questions I think this is good. She said students in the past sometimes got confused and their brain was too focused on the specific questions rather than the material.
+Audrey U Yes, it's so so so important. That's interesting because I try to start doing questions 2 days before the exam. Ha, I'm sure both ways work! :) Happy studies Audrey! -Patrick
Oh yeah! That's what most people do and it works that way!! Her advice was just for people (like myself lol) that get caught up during the exam trying to remember the actual questions rather than the info. Didn't even know I was doing it till she said that and realized she was right haha
That whiteboard is amazing! I wish my nursing school had tests so I old be motivated to keep on top of the content. We just end up with 40 to 60 percent of the grade being exam marks. During the semester we get graded on academic assignments. So I end up focusing on the topic of the assignment for most of the semester. To the detriment of other topics. But in Australia we don't have nclex so maybe that why testing isn't focused on as much.
Loved this video and forgot about my Clinical Companion Book! Thanks for reminding me! Studying a new way, I’m in Med/Surg 1 and this was an awesome video!
wow. you were so thorough. So in depth. Thank you for sharing. In med surge 2 now. Still waiting for my first test grade. And I really needed this because I felt like I did horrible. Want to ensure I prepare for next exam sooner
My favorite recommendation is the white board exercise! My mind has a tendency to wander after studying for a long time, so I'm excited to try to keep it engaged with this method. Thanks!
+Carlos Perez Carlos man! That is awesome!!!! Congrats! Seriously. Its been cool getting your comments over the last few months and hearing you finally becoming a nurse. Mad props man you deserve it!
My schools don’t require an entrance exam - I am taking my pre-requisites, I finished Anatomy & Physiology 1 and 2, as well as microbiology. (All with labs )This semester I’m taking Biostatistics, Nutrition , and psychology. I left chemistry with labs for the summer. Thanks so much for the inspiration and the great videos. Xoxoxo
Love your videos! I'm just starting to take my pre-recs to apply to nursing school and I love getting the POV from someone in the thick of it. Keep doing what you do!
+Holly Knutson Thank you Holly! When I started this channel I wanted to give people the reality of nursing school and also make friends within the community here. It's really encouraging to me for you to say! Have fun w/ school. Wont be long! :) -Patrick
Good video, and great channel. Both yours and Nurse Bass' channels are really motivating and gives me a great insight into the nursing student's life :) - 2nd year med student.
+Peter Jennings Right on man! So your a med student but you watch nursing videos a lot? I have seen some medical students blogs too. Glad you find them motivating!
Thank you so much for this , I just failed my first exam and this video made me realize what I did wrong . I was devastated , still am but I know I’m going to do good on the next test ! So helpful !
Thanks for the tips! I'm in med-surg 3 right now (graduating in May, AHH!) and I have been stressing over my next exam. I already have a whiteboard so I'm gonna try out your method! Also, way to go kicking that test's ass! :)
I'm a straight A student and I just failed Med-Surg 2 course by 1% of test questions (despite the fact that I got 100% on all the projects!!) I didn't study enough and the exams were a grammatical mess. I wish I had the discipline you did! I have never studied that much, ever lol! Good video! Hopefully it will help someone not do what I did
+Pretzelcrumbs Hey Pretzel! Missed ya! And sorry to hear about that 1%. I know a couple of friends who failed by 1% of even 1 question actually. You getting back into the grind next semester?
Loved this video!! I start med surg next week and am super nervous for it. I use the same textbook as you so I will definitely be getting the clinical companion. I need to start studying the way you do I just can't focus for that long. Maybe if I take breaks like you do I can focus better.
I've watched a couple of your videos. I have been a nurse for 25 years. I just want to encourage you. You will do fine. !!!!!!!!!!!!!You seem to have the temperament and personality that's needed. When do you graduate? What type of nursing do you want to do??Best of luck young man! Hope your test went well.
+118debi aww thank you, you made my day :) I'm thinking the Med Surg route to possibly some type of cardiac nursing. Maybe head the ER/ICU route but it changes with the semesters haha. What floor do you work on?

depends on how many hrs of class I had that day as well. If I go to class from 8am to 4pm then 2 hrs or so that night. If I have entire day off I'll do 3 hrs in morning after breakfast, take a break for 2 hrs or so. Then do another 3 hrs.. than dinner then 1-2 hrs maybe. Just depends on work load at time and test date too. Also how I am feeling mentally. Would need coffee in afternoon on long days like that.
+MiniMi80 I actually designed them and had them custom made for our school. You dig? I almost feel like I should sell them because quite a few people have asked but I'm not really a t shirt sales person youtuber guy at the moment haha.
+MiniMi80 Hey what size are you? I may have a medium or two left. I could throw it up on ebay if you really wanted one? I wouldn't be making much profit because I would have to buy it straight from SNA but it would get you one if you like it.
I'm about to take my first exam in Med surg. Thanks so much for this video. I need it extra tips. My professor is going way to fast and it's making it seem like a piece of cake. Just read here and there, I'm thinking , it can't be that easy.
It generally isn't that easy. I would experiment with the different techniques in this video and start to form habits that work well for you. I use all these different styles depending on how I am feeling or what seems to be working at the time. Good luck!!
+Tracie renee Omg that is the best tip ever because I spilled coffee on my first one and then bought a second so I have spent like 100 bucks on that book haha. And you get it for $2. Smart thinking! :) Have a good day Tracie!

I need to get my note taking-skills together. I was so good at it in highschool, many MANY years ago....
+Aliya Tudor Once you get back in the study grind it starts to feel natural again. Good luck with school! :) I took 5 years off after high school!
I love your channel! I can't wait to start nursing!

cant find the med surg book :(
I found it on Amazon
Thank you so much for this video. Im going to start med surg this semester. The Saunders Nclex book will help me study for med surg one??

If I have entire day off I'll do 3 hrs in morning after breakfast, take a break for 2 hrs or so. Then do another 3 hrs.. than dinner then 1-2 hrs maybe. Just depends on work load at time and test date too. Also how I am feeling mentally. Would need coffee in afternoon on long days like that.
U just smart!
Great Video😁
Where did you get your pink shirt?
+MiniMi80 I actually designed them and had them custom made for our school. You dig? I almost feel like I should sell them because quite a few people have asked but I'm not really a t shirt sales person youtuber guy at the moment haha.
+NurseMurse You should definitely sell them. They're the best once I've seen so far and I've been looking for awhile.
I will look into this after the semester ends. Now is just too hectic ha. Thanks for suggestion!
+MiniMi80 Hey what size are you? I may have a medium or two left. I could throw it up on ebay if you really wanted one? I wouldn't be making much profit because I would have to buy it straight from SNA but it would get you one if you like it.
I just saw this message. Did you put it up on ebay? I wear a size medium or large.
You went to front range? Nice I'm here in Pueblo!
No we do not diagnose or prescribe but in many ways we are the doctors of yesterday. I’d like to see us men get more respect for our career choice
Good luck!!
I got that book 1 edition older for $2 on amazon. same thing. It's amazing
+Tracie renee Omg that is the best tip ever because I spilled coffee on my first one and then bought a second so I have spent like 100 bucks on that book haha. And you get it for $2. Smart thinking! :) Have a good day Tracie!
You're like awesome...
