    After listening to his lectures and reading his books, I can attest that what he professes makes good, simple sense. He advocates nothing more than eating full-fat, whole organic foods over low-fat and non-fat conventional processed foods.

    Looking for evidence of lower heart disease and cancer on Crete - couldn't find it. Just says people of Crete consume a lot of olive oil. I DID find this "When researchers from the University of Crete recently compared residents of Crete who had heart disease with residents free of the disease, they found that the residents with heart disease ate a diet with “significantly higher daily intakes” of monounsaturated fats (principally olive oil) as well as all fats."

    I eat a high carb, low fat diet - I weigh average 110-115. A good friend- same height - has always eaten a lot of meat, a lot of fat - she's probably close to 200 lbs., if not more. Wonder why.

    While fat is an essential macronutrient, I would not rely on olive oil or any other oil as my main source. Oils are highly caloric and their fat content is roughly 50% saturated fat. So, if we want to pack on calories and saturated fat in order to obtain protective polyphenols, there are much better candidates such as nuts and seeds. Those nuts and seeds are packed with Omega 3's which Dr. Weil correctly characterizes as essential. Moreover, processed foods containing oil are a marker of a low quality food....you can bet that it's densely caloric and fatty. Cooking with oil is totally unnecessary but everyone seems obsessed with the idea while proclaiming it to be the hallmark of Mediterranean Diet. Nonsense.

    he could just be eating TOO much of the good stuff. 1 sweet potate vs 5, as side dish. You can be healthy but you will end up with a belly. Examples like that. Body types help in the outcome of looks as well (think viking). Being FAT is not Necessarily telling you he eates the wrong stuff, that´s why when you go to a nutritionist, one of first things they ask is what do you eat regularly (to check nutrition, health). My tendency is to be very thin, it´s my type, regardless of food.

    I think omega 6 itself is not the problem per say but rather that it is rancid or rotted omega 6. that people are eating. I ate extra virgin olive oil once off a spoon, and I almost vomited, I got the dry heaves, my body absolutly didn't like it, so I use it in salad dressings. I love my whole milk too. yummy.

    Not always do we do what we know to be right, right? Still the right´s Information´s right if you research. He may be doing all the right stuff Except Not eating Lots and Lots... that could be it. Have half a sweet potatoe vs have 5, as a side dish, for example.... you´ll get a belly. There are body types as well which help the outcome of looks.

    Dr. Weil looks like he eats too much fat. Of course what makes him fat is an excess of calories, and fat is the macronutrient that gets stored as fat preferentially to protein or carbs being converted to fat for bodily storage. Weil's olive oil and coconut oil and butter is nothing but junk food. These extracts have no fiber, no protein, no minerals and very very few, if any, vitamins. The RDA for Omega 3 is a paltry 1.6 grams. For omega 6, it's only 14 grams per day. This much fat is already contained in our food. We don't need additional oil. Just like we don't need sugar or refined flour. Oil has 9 calories per gram, while protein and carbs have just 4 calories per gram! Excessive dietary fat causes insulin resistance.

    • @mathewmesser7608
      @mathewmesser7608 10 лет назад

      Butter is a junk food, are you serious? Ever heard of butric acid, CLA, vitamins A/D/E/K, ton of minerals, and you need fat to absorb certain nutrients. Coconut oil is empty calorie, however it has some beneficial acids lauric acid for one.

    • @allencrider
      @allencrider 10 лет назад

      Mathew Messer You mean butyric acid don't you? "Butyric acid is present in, and is the main distinctive smell of, human vomit" says Wikipedia. You fat lovers want stinky puke? Check out the figures for just one stick of butter. Calories: 810. No protein. No fiber. Vitamin A 94% RDA. Folate 1%, B 3%, B5 2%, B12 8%, D 17%, E 35%, K 37% That's it for vitamins. For minerals, Calcium 5% RDA, Copper %, Magnesium 1%, Phosphorus 4%, Potassium 1%, Selenium 2%, Zinc 1% So here you have just 1 stick of butter that amounts to about 1/3 of your total calories, yet you're not even close to 33% of your minerals and vitamins for the day. Butter is junk food. Empty calories, mostly. Compare to the lowly sweet potato
      810 calories of sweet potato: Protein 26% of RDA. Fiber 81% Vitamin A 4,444% Folate 26% B1 61% B2 44% B3 33% B5 151% B6 116% C 25% E 15% K 14% Calcium 47% Copper 158% Iron 72% Magnesium 56% Manganese 106% Phosphorus 63% Potassium 68% Selenium 10% Zinc 6%
      Just this one example shows what crappy food butter is. As for coconut oil, lauric acid is not essential. Meaning our own body can make as much as it needs itself.

    • @mathewmesser7608
      @mathewmesser7608 10 лет назад

      allencrider Who made this chart, what stick of butter they used? Grass fed, free range? I doubt it, Sweet potato has no Vitamin A, zero, its beta carotene, wich you may or may not be able to convert to Vit A, Fiber is not essential, you need zero to survive, as many populations have. However even if it would have no minerals vitamins, the fat content is still wonderfull, and makes food taste great.

    This guy is pushing olive oil because he is in the business. Right away this brings up red flags. The only oil that apparently doesn't clog your system is fish oil. All other oils technically are not that healthy for you. Only fish oil is safe for your system. He sounds like a credible person, but science is starting to show that the Mediterranean diet is successful not because of the olive oil, its the opposite. The amount of vegetables in this diet is the key to its success. One has to be very careful when dealing with oils. The odd occasional dish with oil is fine. But to say that its healthy to include oils in your regular diet is crazy.
