Look at Griselda, their Slaughthouse 2.O. They had to fight and struggle with the label in order for their music not to turn into what the label wanted it. Slaughterhouse shouldve never been signed to a Pop Artist.

Yeah man, first he was kinda shunned by Snoop, then he chose Deathrow over Aftermath and wasted four years of his career (probably would have happened on Aftermath as well), then he pretty much just became a freestyler and mix tape rapper, seemed this was his big break (Shady records) and then even that failed. Dude is SUPER talented and been around all the big guns and just had ZERO luck. Being around Snoop way back in the day, joining Deathrow when it was dead, album shelved, Slaughterhouse seemingly about to go big, fails. Gotta feel for him.

They had an identity crisis. They couldn't figure out what they were going to be. Gritty and underground? Pop and maintstream? Branding is key. They had the talent but no image to latch on too.
The problem is that they did both styles (gritty and poppy) poorly. It wouldn't have mattered what direction they went, they just simply weren't good enough.

Yep, all the shelved Aftermath artists , King T, RBX, Bishop lamont, etc. But yeah, Slaughter house and The four horsemen are two of the biggest disappointments in hip hop history for me. Raskass' Van gough situation was another, The L.B.C crew album never coming out, Crooked I's Deathrow years, Canibus's first album, The Gravediggaz second album, Snoops second album. Off the top of my head they are the biggest disappointments. I do like the second Gravediggaz album and i grew to love Tha Doggfatha album, its a great album but didn't live up to Doggystyle. Detox never coming out and then the disappointing "Compton" album would be another. I heard that Busta was going to still drop another Aftermath album? peopel sleeping on Xzibits Napalm album is disappointing as well, great album. One last one, Warren G dropping two wack singles on his second album after his first g funk era classic. Oh and Coolios second album as well.
Like only 1 or 2 of their songs made it to a any of my playlists. A lot of their discography is songs you listen to once or twice and say it’s dope then come back to in a couple months. You can’t keep blow my mind. Sometimes I need mindless shit to scream. This might seem a little counter intuitive, but they were too good at rapping, that’s why it didn’t work.
I spent most of my twenties as a big Royce and Budden fan, so when this group formed I was amped. The reality is, they were never going to appeal to the radio masses and really take off. But for what we got, it was still great to see 4 amazing MCs make tracks together. I still bump "Microphone" a decent amount
For me they are just too technical for the mainstream audience. But their names are too big (also being affiliated to em) for the underground too treat them as they treat other underground artists.
@Vincent Louise Beltran. Bingo, you understand how mainstream music works. In order for an artist to break out into the mainstream, be it Rap or other types of genres, you either need backing from mainstream record companies or a gimmick that can sell. Eminem got success because of his Comedy Rap/Horrorcore style gimmick in his early years. Mainstream record companies have always targeted a young audience and groups like Slaughterhouse just don't resonate with a young audience.

This wasn't Eminem's supergroup per se. They were just signed under his label. Honestly, Joe Budden killed the group. That Glass House album was almost done until Joe suddenly walked. But there are tons of reasons why the group fell out. Strictly blaming Eminem is just too easy
The over poppy sound on the album was the downfall, I wasn’t mad at the Cee-Lo Green feature. If you go and listen to that song. The shit is hard, but personally in my own opinion they could of cut the rest of the radio songs and replaced it with some more content filled songs. Wouldn't have worked for them. Wutang plan only works if you can 1. Work together 2. Can rap without the "leader" holding you above water. 3. Can make an insane Solo Album then come right back to the family. 4. Involve someone who knows how to make a beat.
As a primarily rock musician(lifetime hip hop fan) I see the longevity of a supergroup is always being done in by "the business". Anytime you got multiple talented people who could easily done their own thing in entertainment there's gonna be a way higher pressure from the higher ups to not only produce for the supergroup but also that little voice at corporate saying "you could break out and go solo, get your own money, the group will still be their after an album cycle" Yeah that happens a couple times and it's over, it almost eats itself. Shady records is like a family, it was created to sign the members of D12. And two of the artist on the lable had addictions, which em helped both of them with. Also no matter what i still think that all they wanted to do could have been done if they just asked Em.
If Dr. Dre would of produced the albums, they would of skyrocketed through the charts..... because Interscope would of super-backed the project & they would of gave them that stamp. They were basically on a major label but considered underground because the label didn't back them.
That's like putting Michael Jackson, Prince and Rick James all in one group There's just too many chefs in the kitchen. Everybody wants to play the lead, but no one wants to be a supporting cast member 😎
I don't understand why they didn't blow up. But I'm sure it has a *lot* to do with how dumbed down rap has gotten in the last 15 or 20 years. If they came out in the early 2000s they would've gotten *way* more love. And as a rapper myself, they were *inspirational* for lyricists like me.
This might be true, but the weakness was failing to impress an audience, and the reason for that wasn't that music dumbed down (otherwise Kendrick or J.Cole wouldn't sell), the problem with slaughterhouse was just being too much and uninspired regarding the art part. They might rap very good, but they haven't had anything remarkable.
For me the album just didn't have the right production and even though they didn't need features some dope lyricist features and also big time EMINEM himself should have dropped some dope verses on there. He seemed to have bugger all involvement. I think the promotion and marketing was weak also. Its always problematic, trying to please the hip hop underground heads as well as the mainstream casual fans. The battle of reputation/keeping it true and record sales.

This dude doesn’t have the required knowledge of history or do proper research. Most of the work this channel puts out includes inaccurate information. This is the last time I waste my time watching an opinion piece from @hiphopmadness.
Never had a proper producer. Think the traditional producer (the overseer, visionary, resourceful guide for musical, tonal, and thematic direction/performance) a la Trevor Horn, Quincy Jones, Dr. Dre, Rick Rubin, RZA, Kanye West. It looked like Just Blaze was gonna do it, but it never materialized.
Bottom line is that Slaughterhouse was too esoteric...they lack mass appeal💯 For starters, this group felt more like a collective of individual solo acts than a cohesive unit. RUN DMC (for example) felt *group-like* to the degree that it's difficult to imagine them as solo MC's. Secondly, "bars" DON'T guarantee great records✋ These guys can spit, but their songs don't connect with the public🤷♂️ For example... B.I.G. had far more than just "bars"...he had great OVERALL rap style, charisma and a keen perspective, which resulted in timeless classics; songs that are relatable💯 His songs *feel good*👍👍 He made it all seem so effortless, too..he had a knack for it👌 On the other hand... Slaughterhouse records play more like a series of rapid fire, bar laden verses, i.e., "rappidy rap". And that sorta thing doesn't resonate with people...that's not gonna pack the dance floors✋
@@Army_of_One_ Second Round's On Me is my favorite album of his. It unfortunately dropped in the wake of Proof being murdered and Eminem hiding from the world for three years after that. Little was done to promote it.

I was a huge Slaughterhouse fan, Welcome to: Our House was off the mark but looking back, and taking it for what it is, it is a good album. But Royce hit it on the head when he said that too many pop songs were picked for that album. Now would it have sold more if it was fire? Probably, but it's hard to say. I went to see them live in Royal Oak (near Detroit) prior to the album dropping and it was a small venue, a couple hundred people there if that. So I don't know that the internet buzz translated to success, and that's all Em was going for with the pop tracks, so I don't blame him too much, because there was a time when Em was HEAVY promoting the group, moreso than any of the other rappers on his label other than 50 and Yelawolf, maybe.
The fault falls on Em & Paul. Em said, "oh, i just went in and polished it" when anyone who is thinking about music isnt thinking, lets polish Fucking Slaughterhouse 🤦♂️ Joe had an issue with how Em mixed it, and choose the tracklist without their input. Royce says as nicely as possible, that there was too many radio songs, and thats how Em wouldve done his own album without saying that he ruined the project thinking about money. Juelz straight up said management, and crook is sitting there blaming Joe bc to him as long as Joe wouldve shut up and let this happen, they couldve still been around 😂 its not hard to see. Shady tried to make Slaughterhouse into a Pop Rap super Group, favoritism towards Royce made the others hella jealous, Royce's loyalty to Em meant that Slaughterhouse wouldnt ever being going anywhere outside of Shady Records, Em and Paul wouldnt even let them open for him, then Em gonna act stupid to Sway. Griselda mustve been fighting for there lives at Shady.
Artist answer: there was so much happening and not enough time for us Fans answer: I’m telling y’all it’s the beats man The Real Answer: After awhile, the group itself didn’t care or wasn’t committed to the group anymore. @@allenadams1862 Most people don't care so much about lyrics. Most people care more about your rap flow i.e. your ability to make the flow of words sound good. If you're able to do that through mumbling, you will be multi-millionaire. Some of the best Beatles songs have crap lyrics but it's all about making the crap lyrics sound good.
I'd pinpoint it to two things: 1) The first album sounded too commercial and alienated their core fans at a crucial moment in their career 2) (the one none of them will admit to) There's no defining personalities within the group that could draw in new fans. Outside of hardcore hip hop circles, their appeal is weak. It's really evident in the marketing and bland visual presentation. They basically leaned entirely on their mic skills to sell themselves and assumed that would be enough. Besides that there isn't anything about them that really stands out and makes outsiders want to pay attention. That limited their appeal strictly to their established fanbases and essentially cripples their commericial potential right out of the gate.
Exactly @ point number 2. Even Eminem was basically unknown before My Name Is, despite having a few decent tracks in his name. It's that persona that people are interested in, especially in today's music industry. It's sad to say, but nobody really cares about your lyrics anymore if you don't have the appeal. Jay Reece the difference is that jay z has learned to keep himself far enough to where j cole is able to have his own sound and ideas without having to depend on jay z
Lupe Vasquez Yea but that might not work for everybody. I feel like J Cole is an anomaly, he’s just a rare breed. Rick Ross did the opposite with Meek and it worked, but Ross isn’t a superstar IMO.

As a primarily rock musician(lifetime hip hop fan) I see the longevity of a supergroup is always being done in by "the business".

Eminem tried to make Slaughterhouse a mainstream-friendly group with all those poppy “rock-rap” beats.
Their first album was their self titled album and it was not commercial at all tf are you talking about
Exactly @ point number 2. Even Eminem was basically unknown before My Name Is, despite having a few decent tracks in his name. It's that persona that people are interested in, especially in today's music industry. It's sad to say, but nobody really cares about your lyrics anymore if you don't have the appeal. We're not in the 90s
I really liked this video, you make super informative videos on topics not a lot of people are talking about.
How about doing a ‘why DOES hip hop respect....’ video?
Sometimes I think the 2nd worst thing an artist can do is sign to an active superstar. Their careers usually go nowhere. Ain’t that many Jay-Z/ J Cole situations out there.
Jay Reece the difference is that jay z has learned to keep himself far enough to where j cole is able to have his own sound and ideas without having to depend on jay z
Lupe Vasquez I think that's what Em's doing with Griselda now. Completely hands off.
Lupe Vasquez Yea but that might not work for everybody. I feel like J Cole is an anomaly, he’s just a rare breed. Rick Ross did the opposite with Meek and it worked, but Ross isn’t a superstar IMO. I’m currently listening to “legend” from his current hiphop weeklys lol
Funny thing is i never heard of them being a group until bad meets evil was a year old already and all i ever listened to was em and 50 so i feel like the marketing wasnt there and barely anyone knew about the group at all
Nah, you just gave the answer. "All I ever listened to was em and 50"...that's why. They were a full touring group for over a year before they signed to Shady. That's on you for only listening to a cornball and 50.
All Trash
Obviously i didnt ONLY listen to them kid i listened to everyone around them and lots of other people and groups, i grew up on rap, but what im saying is barely anyone knew this group thats a fact and not a single person young, old, mainstream, underground, on tv, or in person ever talked about them.
Dont make yourself look like an idiot either trying to belittle some of the top rappers to ever live and the mist recognizable and influential ones at that besides Bug and Pac of course, not even Jay can say that and im sure youre more of a lil xan type arent ya player?
Right, nice try though mate, cheers.
It failed cause it was actually Joe’s group but he lost that control when they signed
PapaGeorg10 no one said he “owned” Slaughterhouse. They were independent artist brought together by Joe who made their own decisions. Shady changed that for the worst.
KXNG CROOKED IS FROM THE LBC NOT THE CPT.
This the second time I hear somebody call him a Compton rapper lol
There naybor citys close enough 🤣
What is the definition of success to these brothers? They don’t make music for the clubs nor the females, so you can forget about them getting radio spins.
i think they thought theyd bring the 90s back.
Pretty much. Popular music don't want to hear no lyrical gymnastics.
Kevin Frazier that and they all look over 35. Hip hop is a young mans game in general. You have a few old head outliers that have a hit here and there. But generally its for dip shot teenagers and strippers in strip clubs.
Them niggas are not hitmakers and joe is the only delusional person in the group that thinks shady ruined there careers no there lack of hit making abilities ruined slaughterhouse

Should’ve never signed with shady
Forreal! They probably would still be around making mixtapes and albums
Bingo. Nail on the head
Crooked I said it himself. The group would've never worked out, shady or not
Crook says that because Crook is VERY loyal towards his label heads when he signed it. That's the thing I feel like Joell is the one that nailed why the best management. 3 of the 4 said management Crook is the only one to not say it. Joe said they were mismanaged, Joell said mismanaged, and Royce said it too.

Cormega still the shit.

ghee butter actual answer is Shady Records. Only reason the group even existed was because of Joe
@@slender_bean9404 Joe also broke the group up from the inside. Royce wanted to sign to Shady Records to get more recognition, but Joe didn't put any effort into it. Did you the dumb shit he did at the Tech N9ne concert. They opened for him and Joe just sat inna chair smoking a square while the rest of the group was fumbling to figure out what to do when Joe's part came on
@@wulaeofthetengu8336 Of course Royce wanted to sign to shady, I love Royce but he stay swinging off Marshall's nuts.
Wasnt eminem's group though.
Luke973T He even claimed to have lost money on the project during the Sway interview. Eminem backed the group because he genuinely wanted a lyrical group to succeed in the mainstream.
In the one of the tracks, they said Eminem brought them together
You're wrong though.
@@martytu20 so why didn't he just let them be lyrical and make the music the way they wanted? Why was he all over the album and controlling features and beats and shit? Lol, doesnt make sense he's a fool, Shady records is where artists go to get shelved (aside from maybe YelaWolf?)
@@HorizonHipHop it wasn't just Eminem. You have to listen to every point of view from all four of them. Even Joe. There were a lot of issues. The one who has gotten the shortest end of the stick is crooked I. He can't make a great album as much as I try to love it.
Two things matter to me
Slaughterhouse -Glass House
Justice league-Snyder Cut
I still think (and this is coming from someone who was a Budden stan long before a Slaughterhouse fan), that Joe Budden caring more about himself than the group is a major reason why this didn't work out.
Rozco
Nah, bruh. You’re wrong. More cared deeply about the group. It’s just as he said earlier, somebody made a lot of money (management)... hell, even Joell even said it was management’s fault.
@@adrianhubbard2460 I mean, considering Joell and Joe are close friends, of course he has his back. Look at everything Crook said about Budden though. At the end of the day, Budden had less to lose than the other guys (maybe not Royce), he knew he was more famous than the other 3 guys and knew he would have other options even if the group ended. Budden loves bumping heads with everyone, that's his thing, he more than likely let his ego get in the way and probably even pissed off Em. Budden doesn't care now, he has his podcast making him money. Royce is doing ok I guess, but I'm sure Royce, Crook and Joell would love to still be a rap supergroup making headlines and raking in cash. Egos ruined Slaughterhouse
Budden had other things going, So did Royce, a lot of solo from Ortiz ... but they never stuck to their roots bottom line ... they forgot what sound got them there ...
They need to release Glass House in whatever state it is as a mixtape at least. For the fans. Unmastered whatever just put the songs out
Slaughterhouse never had that "it factor" as a group lets be real.
Ultrasounn' Entertainment that could also be the case they all look like cook out uncles just plain looking plain dressing dudes with lil to no star power but can RAP REALLLY FUCKING WELL but it’s not that people don’t care about lyrics anymore it’s that you need more than just lyrics and music to be a hit and so I agree
Kind of true
People like you classify "IT" factor after a company puts marketing dollars to sell an image. They failed because Eminem has corny ass production and made them switch up what actually made them SH. That's it. End of discussion. If they dropped "Number 1" in that era as a first single on a major that wasn't Shady, we're having a different discussion in 2019.
Ultrasounn' Entertainment
I don't know about that. I think anyone would love the fact that 4 well known and respected rappers formed a group. The reason why they never blew up is because hip hop has changed and kids today only care about beats, not lyrics anymore.
Thats to real. No gimmicks jist bars
This only went bad when they signed to Eminem. Before that they made better music and had better beats.
Not entirely true, their mixtapes were still fire - it was their official label debut that was a miss.

if that same album had came out 5 years prior it'd been the best just by time it dropped the style had ended that simple.
