My parents taught us very early in life that equipment of all kinds was expensive and if properly cared for would most likely give you exceptional, long term service. I also need to commend you on your management of the controls in removing the fence post. I wondered if you were going to use the excavator, but when I watched you gently catch the loop on the strap to begin the lift - what can I say other than once again Nicely Done sir! Hi, Phil. May I ask you. Stihl question? I just bought a brand new MS 170. First day using it, about two hours or less into cutting sapling and small trees (max 6” diameter), my bar got wedged. No big deal. I shut it off and gently eased it free no prob. But the dang thing won’t start now!? Tried several times, waited an hour between tries, in case it was flooded. Even waited two days and tried again today. I smell fuel, it’s fuelled up, chain moves smoothly on the bar by hand. Took the bar off just in case. NO LUCK. Any ideas? Thank you :)

    • @rphiliprogers
      @rphiliprogers 4 года назад

      @@tmackie1694 It may still be flooded. I first pull the spark plug out to see if it is wet and then blow it off. If it is flooded I place my my knee on the engine shroud, set the engine in the run position and hold the throttle wide open. This is a video on the procedure I use, ruclips.net/video/49Y8LWreDyA/видео.html . The other day I had a customer with a flooded saw and I discovered they had topped the fuel up with bar oil, in that case I had to flush and clean the fuel system including cleaning the fuel pump and metering diaphram sides of the carb. Good luck, if you where in the KC area you could bring it into my Stihl store in Red Bridge.

    • @tmackie1694
      @tmackie1694 4 года назад

      Phil Rogers Aloha, Phil, thanks so much.
      You steered me on the right path. I took out the spark plug to make sure it wasn’t flooded and check the gap. Both fine. However noticed contact points in gap were very very black with carbon. Cleaned it with a paper towel and it fired right up :) Yay! It’s a good thing because I can’t take up your very kind offer to visit you in KC. (I am in Hawaii.) so... why does a brand new chainsaw have so much carbon on that spark plug? My fuel mix is dead on accurate 50:1 (non-ethanol and Stihl brand oil). Any thoughts? THANKS AGAIN 😃

      My feeling is that you should be open to learning. I self-taught myself to run a Kubota skid steer with a grapple about a year ago at age 72. Just takes patience and practice and RUclips. I removed several hundred mature avocado stumps from hilly terrain. The hilly part CAN be a bit scary but I had no problems. I haven't had a chance to run an excavator, but there are still 2 joysticks and it can' be all that much harder. In fact, it might be easier in one way as rear visibility in a skid steer is terrible and requires some spatial awareness and a lot of caution.

    I have a small property but I have gotten too old to do some of the things I wanted to do with the equipment I had. So instead of renting, which involves scheduling and then wondering if you will get the machine on a certain date and if the weather would cooperate, I bit the bullet and bought a new B2601 Kubota with FEL and backhoe. I have used it in ways I never thought of before buying it and when I have no further use for it I will sell it and have more money left than I ever could have saved by renting one. Part of that plan is keeping it serviced on schedule and out of the elements so it isn't rusted and faded by the sun.

    Great video! Wish I had your finesse on excavator controls!!
    The sea fossils in the rock reminded me of a mind-bending experience from over 40:years ago. In the mountains north of Banff, Alberta, I hiked into the back country and climbed a mountain called Brachiopod Mountain. The whole mountain - right to the top at 8,750 feet - is littered with sea fossils in the fractured limestone scree. The forces of Mother Nature in turning that sea bed into a mountain are simply awesome!
    PS. I also remember almost freezing when I camped overnight (ill-prepared) near the base of that mountain. It was mid-August and the daytime was pleasantly warm, yet in the morning there was a half inch coating of ice on the lake I slept beside!!

    Pulling the evergreens out with a single grab paid for the excavator, at least for the head, i.e. piece of mind, together with the likely frustration of removing them with a small piece of equipment considering the time spent on extrication could be put toward other important tasks. Great video with the implementation, the narration and the satisfaction a smart decision was made at the rental dealership. Super video. Yeah, affection belongs in the house or in the bushes. Thank you for sharing the rental info.

    Two additional lessons learned watching this video. Watching you pick up dimes with that grapple thumb I should probable might outta burn my man card. Additionally I wont be renting equipment anytime soon I'd probably have that thing jerking and bouncing all over the place. I just found your channel and the videos have been enjoyable. Thank you and God bless.

    Mike, I had my daughters help with things like truck repairs and operating large trucks. I had to do a little arm twisting but years later they fondly remember and appreciate those opportunities. Consider putting Hanna & Eva in the excavator’s seat for some real work experience.

    Mike, you really should have a Superman costume on when pulling those fence posts with concrete & stumps out of the ground or knocking the trees over. Very impressive machine & operator skill!

    Melissa:
    Although I would not characterize Mike as a SNAG (SENSITIVE NEW AGE GUY), I do feel strongly he has his own "love language"!
    Mike is a doer and a provider and a giver! I am much that same way myself! I think you both hit the jackpot when all is said and done! Great to see you both together having fun and laughing. ❤️😂🤗

    I think if people have to much time on their hands. I am from the old school way of thinking. I personally think that if you have to worry about that. You would not see her in the videos. I know that she has a want for a swimming pool and I think in her wish will be there. Please remember that this is a family oriented video Channel

    2 things happen when I rent equipment. I never have enough time and I always seem to get a piece of equipment that is too small for what I want to do.

    Hey mike,you know the large majority of people that rent equipment run the crap out of it.Anybody i know drives it like they stole it!You are the rare exception.Ive been asked many times to rent my equipment out,the answer is always the same,"no way!,worked too hard to get this far for a weekend cowboy to pound on it.I rented many pieces and return them as found to the best of my ability.Damage deposits are way too high.Way cheaper to rent if you can run a machine.

    Mike, instead of playing chess with all the roots and stumps, why not backing your dump trailer from the start next to the trampoline. Drop em, and bring to your new burn pile? Love the videos.

    We had a "worshin" machine at home too in Fredonia, Pa. Mike what you said about taking care of rental equipment if you damage it it makes it more expensive when the next person rents it. Even though an insurance company would repair it somebody has to gt charged it isn't free. I am still impressed on how this mighty mini performs yes it is expensive but you didn't do this for yourself I think it would be somewhere in the neighborhood of $6000.00 just to do what you are doing. Hello Hunter I saw you when you got the fence. Thank you for sharing with us. Yunis be good now. Ed

    I think you also need to do the other side of the equation when considering the cost. The additional labor cost , owned equipment costs and the lost opportunity costs all should offset the rental side.
