If you're behind a Substitute and take confusion damage, it's applied to the opponent's Substitute. I forgot the exact reasoning, but I remember finding this out on Pokemon Showdown. If there's no Substitute to apply damage to, it just...doesn't happen. So your Substitute will never break as a result of confusion damage.
Now this one is just too ridiculous to even imagine until having watched the video and seeing it done. I thought all the solo runs and such were impressive enough already but I still didn't expect to see the title of this video in my subscriptions feed regardless of all the runs I've watched you complete so far. Can't help but feel compelled to congratulate you for achieving something as absurd as this one was.
Good for exploiting the "Good" AI there. And that's also the beauty with Dragon Rage. 40HP fixed damage can still be very useful in situations where you have nothing else powerful enough to knock out Pokemon. And in a Level 5 Challenge this is pretty much needed as that is literally the most powerful attack you can ever breed to give for level 5 pokemon!
Damn, that was a good run. I was expecting a full run of the game (I didn’t read the title all the way) but even the elite 4 was just awesome to see taken down so handily
I can't believe the Bruno fight. I'm starting to feel sorry for that guy. On the other hand, I've seen over 50 of RBY runs and I just learned about the confusion glitch. This game could not be more broken (and i love it for that).
Lorelei: "Hey uh, guys? There's some kid here with a bunch of really weak pokemon, can someone tell him to go away?" Bruno: "Me handle this." *10 minutes later* Bruno, spinning off into orbit: "Me blasting off again."
Whoa...I tried this about a year ago with a Lv 5 Mewtwo that COULD level up and barely won. Only Jrose would attempt (and succeed at) something this whacky.
I saw someone do a video on winning with a level 5 Mewtwo, so I thought it would be something like that, was pleasantly surprised this involved no Mewtwo and was with no exp gain, so you actually were strictly level 5 only. It's very nice you didn't use Shift mode either. Also you could have gotten Leech Seed by breeding two pokemon that know it in Gen 2, where then the offspring would have had it at level 5. Since you were already taking advantage of Gen 2 tradebacks with stuff like having a level 5 Lapras knowing Sing and Tangela having Confusion at all, this should have been acceptable for the challenge, though it proved to not be necessary.
That glitch is pretty hilarious from a programming perspective! Must have been something like 'Okay, to code this substitute thing we just have to make its number count down instead of whichever Pokémon is being attacked. Oh no wait, what about poison or burn damage? Ehh, this is getting too complicated. Oh! We can just code it based on who's *dealing* the damage instead! I mean it's not like there are any moves where the Pokémon hurts itself as long as we account for moves like High Jump Kick and Struggle."
"There isn't a single Pokémon that can learn Leech Seed at level 5." Since you're using Gen 2, you can breed any Pokémon that have Leech Seed as a level up move, and the baby will have the move if both parents have it. Both Bulbasaur and Exeggcute can have it and they both have sleeping moves and Substitute.
i think leech seed might have been more optimal for the elite four here on tangela because it isn’t a persistent status effect; it likely would have saved some ranges for dragon rage
I read the title and thought you were pulling my leg, and that this was some sort of April Fools joke, but nope… Jrose you are insane, and I can’t believe you actually pulled off something like this. Kudos

Whenever I thought about it, I imagined this challenge would be the easiest because of how easy it is to manipualte the E4's ai. However, it kind of surprised me that there is a somewhat difficult aspect to planning out your movesets, since they're so limited in generation 1. Like PointCrow's level 1 team for the Black and White Elite Four, it essentially swept through with ease because of endeavor, sandstorm, and soothe bell.
I was holding out for Charmander's Swords Dance to come in clutch somehow haha. But this was super awesome, regardless! I feel like playing Gen 1 this way turns it into a really unique and interesting puzzle to try to untangle a solution out of. Awesome job, man.
There is something to be said about how great those old Pokemon games were seeing as how we are still enjoying the games and content on these games today years later. Great vid Jrose.
Amazing :D You can actually get leech seed at lvl 5, but I'm not sure what it would do to the AI as you'd need to use Exeggcute instead of Tangela. With some careful breeding you can hatch Exeggcute with Leech Seed, Sleep Powder, Toxic and confusion :D
Likewise, he could get Bulbasaur with Leech Seed, Toxic, and Sleep Powder, and teach it Substitute, and Poison is always good typing for screwing with the smart AI.
thanks to you. i started manipulating the AI in red/blue more and more than i have in the past. i did this with my Jessie and James anime team challenge and even beat mewtwo in pokemon blue because of the GOOD AI that really wasn't good AI because they use stuff like agility. also i never miss a video of yours. some ive watch again to get ideals to see if i could ever out speed your times which is hard to top so. also scott's thoughts doing Pokemon Yellow makes two good sources for gen 1along with Mah-Dry-Bread. the 3 of you are the ultimate Pokemon Masters
Leech Seed actually would've been available to you. If you breed two Pokémon that both know a move that the offspring would get by leveling up, it'll hatch knowing that move.
Really enjoyed this video. Doing a few other challenge formats to break things up and keep it fresh sounds fun! Thanks as always for the great content.
When behind a substitute, your confusion damage is inflicted upon the opponent’s substitute. If it doesnt have one, nothing actually happens. Maybe after the damage is inflicted on the opponents sub, it then checks the health of the sub, which is obviously 0 already, and then perceives that the sub mustve broken, hence the text mentioning it
It never ceases to amaze me with how crazy your challenges are, but you make them happen with so much thought put into it. Plus, the way you talk makes this even more interesting. Love your content Jrose!

Saying this before I watch: I'm 100% sure it is. Especially if you allow Time Capsule/breeding stuff. Plus, TMs. "Good" AI & Poison-types, Ghost-types, etc. should make this a cakewalk. Anyway, will probably comment more later! Thanks for uploading!

You continue to impress us with your amazing strategy and commentary. Honestly one of the only people who can make every gen 1 run intriguing to the end
Leech seed actually *was* available to you at level 5 since you were breeding your Pokémon in gen 2. Not sure if it’s still a thing in later gens, but in gen 2 at least, if both parents know a move that the baby can learn as a level up move, the baby will hatch knowing that move. I had a level 5 cyndiquill with flamethrower using this method back in the day. Using this method, you could have had a bulbasaur with sleep powder and leech seed. You could also have had exeggcute, but bulbasaur’s poison typing is more useful with good ai.
Mad love your way, Jrose. I love all your challenge vids; solo runs are always great, but the other content you release is always amazing too. Definitely one of my favorite channels to relax and unwind with, and I hope you know how much we all appreciate you
This run was a fun one. I didn't think it was even possible. It's kinda cool that this was a run that didn't need any badge boosting. ...That said, how fast can you beat the game using Missingno.?

This was great. Big respect for this video. The one questuon I have is, did you actually breed all the pokemon and just got the tms via missingno or did you actually just create the team? This would be interesting to me because you actually talked about the option you had for making this team legitimately and I think it would not be out of reach for you to just do that
Both, I could not find a way to get the saves to interact (I used an everdrive). I think I've figured out the issue so I might be able to do this in the future with the actual Pokemon I bred.
You know I’ve been thinking about how the uploads have slowed down lately, but if it’s for content like this I am more than willing to wait! Keep crushing it jrose!
I was a league registered competitive breeder for gen 6 (I made legit perfect stat babies with special egg move sets for competitive players) and I'm pretty sure in gen 2 a baby can inherit a move it would learn by level up if both parents know it. I did a lot of breeding in gen 2 too, for fun, but it has been a long time... Does Paras learn leech seed? A baby with leech seed and spore would be fantastic, yeah? Hmm. Looking forward to seeing a full game level 5 clear attempt!!!
You didn’t ‘outspeed’ the Hitmonchan. After certain status move’s effect, such as paralysis (when it say so and so is fully paralyzed) you get the next move regardless of speed. Anyway, this is incredible, sure it only took you 30 minutes, but you dreamt it up over a year, very cool!
I'm pretty sure that's not true and the most likely explanation is that Hitmonchan was going for Counter which has negative priority and would always go last in that case.
5:43 You double-counted the turn the pokémon wakes up here. The actual amount of turns a pokémon is asleep is 0-6 turns (it can wake up on the turn it falls asleep) but after factoring in the turn where the pokémon wakes up, it becomes 1-7.
You are forgetting that since all the lvl 5 pokemon are slower, the enemy pokemon can never wake up on the turn it was put to sleep. So it would be the turn put to sleep (1), and the next turn waking up (2).
This was an insane run, I never would have thought this was possible. However, I think if you had traded Tangela for a 2nd Ghastly, it would have been easier for you. Great job regardless!
Good to have another video from you Jrose!! I remember first stumbling onto your channel and was so happy to find someone that appreciates the Pokemon game as much as I do. Good to have you back man!!
Yea he said it would not be availible. Not 100% sure but isn't it possible to have a level 7 male bulbasaur with leech seed and a female bulbasaur, so the egg bulbasaur already starts with leech seed?
When I saw this video initially in my sub box I was like "...ehhhhh..." but this was exciting, thrilling, and more than anything else, FUN. Thank you for the great content :)
Regarding the Leech Seed tidbit at the end, couldn't you have bred an Exeggcute with Leech Seed + Sleep Powder + Toxic + Substitute? Or was that not a legal combination?
Yes it gotta be possible. There are some weird mechanics regarding inherited moves I just looked up and didn't know for sure until rn (just knew there was some mechanics since I bred for Little Cup in Stadium 2 back in time). Apparently it depends on the evo-line how many moves the baby will have (2 for most species), PLUS certain regular moves from the father under certain conditions. It will always inherit egg moves, the father's gen2-TM-moves if learnable and regular level up moves IF mom+dad both have it. So yes according to the guide I found lvl 5 leech seed Exeggcute, Bulbasaur and others should be possible. Don't know how it's nowadays though, didn't breed much since then tbh
@@Crusina As cmck said, Jrose11 was using bred Pokémon from Gold/Silver/Crystal through tradeback. It is stated on the video. It wouldn't have made sense that Jrose had Lv5 Tangela with Sleep Powder or Dratini with Supersonic otherwise
Nice video Jrose! You truly are one of the best Pokémon content creator on the platform :)! Regarding that Lapras outspeeding Hitmonchan, could it be that Bruno used a decreased priority move like Counter? A perfect lv 5 Lapras should have like 12 speed + badge boost, while a paralyzed Hitmonchan should have about 25 spd, so still double the speed.

I was screaming "no way" when I realised Charmander was gonna make it through Blastoise, this was so good, between you and Scott's Thoughts there's some really cool gen 1 content out there now
If you're behind a Substitute and take confusion damage, it's applied to the opponent's Substitute. I forgot the exact reasoning, but I remember finding this out on Pokemon Showdown. If there's no Substitute to apply damage to, it just...doesn't happen. So your Substitute will never break as a result of confusion damage.
thats very... confusing
@@zorohibiki Gen 1 as a whole is very confusing. XD
Well he didn't really breed dragon rage, he used the TM.
@@Jotari gave em a can of that good old pedigree…dragon rage 😤 🤔
There's no breeding in gen 1 though. You can get it from a TM.
Not to mention his moves some times show 15/10 Dragon Rage
Bruno is so bad, a baby was able to out-speed his Pokemon.
Go in with a lone zapdos and Bruno is OP
Well it was the 1st game ever so while flawed I have way too much nostalgia for it as you do to hate it at all for it
Ha I like how tickled J rose gets in this one when beating Bruno 😂😂
Lorelei: "Hey uh, guys? There's some kid here with a bunch of really weak pokemon, can someone tell him to go away?"
Bruno: "Me handle this."
*10 minutes later*
Bruno, spinning off into orbit: "Me blasting off again."
Hoo Haaaaaaaaah! * ping *
"Me, Bruno, am only pawn, in game of life..."
Whoa...I tried this about a year ago with a Lv 5 Mewtwo that COULD level up and barely won.
Only Jrose would attempt (and succeed at) something this whacky.
How did you get a level 5 Mewtwo to begin with?
@@cecillewolters1995 Blatant cheating! And I gave it perfect DVs, although Mewtwo was engineered so of course it would have opop genes.
Jrose has two videos where he starts with lv 5 Mewtwo and beats the whole game, if you're interested.
Love your content btw!
The crossover of the gen 1 poketubers
Great video! Fissure will always have 30% acc in Gen 1, and only works as long as the user is faster than the target.
"There isn't a single Pokémon that can learn Leech Seed at level 5."
Since you're using Gen 2, you can breed any Pokémon that have Leech Seed as a level up move, and the baby will have the move if both parents have it. Both Bulbasaur and Exeggcute can have it and they both have sleeping moves and Substitute.
Yeah, I was just about to say that.
Basically bulbasaur with sleep powder, leech seed, substitute and... toxic?
@@naphackDT yeah you could solo the E4 with just that set alone
Allways comming back to this video. Still amazing, that you made it
This reminds me of a Pokémon Stadium 2 challenge of beating the rival with only level 5’s. You’re a legend for putting this together
i think leech seed might have been more optimal for the elite four here on tangela because it isn’t a persistent status effect; it likely would have saved some ranges for dragon rage
Tangela doesn't have access to leech seed at level 5
@@RedEyeStorm7 you can breed it to have it
@@Begeru not according to Bulba's chart.
I read the title and thought you were pulling my leg, and that this was some sort of April Fools joke, but nope… Jrose you are insane, and I can’t believe you actually pulled off something like this. Kudos
april fools 11 days late
The mental image of a big Alakazam being paralized by a corgi sized Arcanine body slamming it was reason enough to watch this video xD
Anyone else still do The Count's voice in your head when watching Jrose? lol
One Dragon Rage ha ha ha
Two Dragon Rage ha ha ha
Three Dragon Rage ha ha ha 😂
Finishing the challenge with charmander beating rival’s blastoise ….
That was really special jrose
This is great! love how happy you were at beating bruno so easily. Good enthusiasm
Just noticed the Ponyta video was up and got so excited. Imagine my surprise when there was not one, but TWO, new JRose videos to watch : - )
One
TWO!
TWO NEW JROSE VIDEOS
Ah Ah Ah
_"We didn't use ... or any cheap strategies"_
> Literally abuses the fact the game thinks the substitute is the opponent's
One of these times when you do these insane challenges, you have to hit us with the: "I refuse to explain why I'm saving in this run."
Best Bruno fight of all time! Thank you for your great content.
This was such a cool idea for a run! It really goes to show how team building and strategy matters more than just higher numbers
Yes, yes!! This is my favorite run, and he did it well with only 5 Pokémon, not even the full 6
Leech Seed actually would've been available to you. If you breed two Pokémon that both know a move that the offspring would get by leveling up, it'll hatch knowing that move.
There's no breeding in gen 1
@@SirHattington But there is in Gen 2, which can trade with Gen 1.
Fascinating.
@@SirHattington
Did you skip the beginning of the video where he talked about getting five of those Pokémon by breeding in Gen II?
Watched probably every video on the channel and think this is my favourite one yet. Well done for continuing to outdo yourself after so many!
Really enjoyed this video. Doing a few other challenge formats to break things up and keep it fresh sounds fun! Thanks as always for the great content.
When behind a substitute, your confusion damage is inflicted upon the opponent’s substitute. If it doesnt have one, nothing actually happens. Maybe after the damage is inflicted on the opponents sub, it then checks the health of the sub, which is obviously 0 already, and then perceives that the sub mustve broken, hence the text mentioning it
Sounds like the game confused itself lol.
What a great run! It’s cool seeing Jrose use mods! I’d love to see more challenges like this, especially after finishing all the solo runs!
A space jam reference from jrose?! Love to see it lol, glad to see you making more videos again.
Another video!? Perfect way to start the day. Keep up the good work Jrose
It never ceases to amaze me with how crazy your challenges are, but you make them happen with so much thought put into it. Plus, the way you talk makes this even more interesting. Love your content Jrose!
Found out about your channel and started binging your vids like 3 days ago. Good stuff man. Makes for some pretty interesting chill content to put on while I do some work.

All right everyone, add this to our "just when we thought we knew everything about Gen 1 battle quirks" bingo card.
Imagine training your whole life to become one of the elite four, an absolute champion in the world of Pokemon…
*Only to get bodied by some kid with a team of level 5 Pokémon*
That Gastly's moveset is something Agatha would think of.
Only the Father pokemon needs to know the move. Bulbpedia is running off of after Gen 6
Yeah I’m really shocked he didn’t do that or know that since he bred other Pokémon to get specific moves.
Charmander defeating blastoise, too, how poetic
This is the top tier content I always look forward to.
Mad love your way, Jrose. I love all your challenge vids; solo runs are always great, but the other content you release is always amazing too. Definitely one of my favorite channels to relax and unwind with, and I hope you know how much we all appreciate you
I'm almost starting to feel bad for Bruno at this point.
I love how you narrate your videos and this run was the most fun thing I have watched in a while
Absolutely love how happy Jrose sounds when beating Bruno 1st try.
😄👍
Upon seeing the title I thought I had already figured out how this would work. Turns out I was wrong and there was waaaayyy more to it. Well done.
Bruno never fails to disappoint good lord
And yet Lance was possibly easier
@@AT-il2ej thats kinda the point, you have an easy way to cheese lance but bruno really is just that bad
@@GhengizKanye You make fun of Bruno but Lance is literally unaware of how the thing he's dedicated his entire life to works.
"We didn't use any cheap strategies" - proceeds to abuse the game's AI, sleep, toxic, and substitute
This run was a fun one. I didn't think it was even possible. It's kinda cool that this was a run that didn't need any badge boosting.
...That said, how fast can you beat the game using Missingno.?
Since I’ve been watching your channel I have learned so much about Gen 1 POKéMON. I can’t thank you enough for what you do and how much you have inspired me to learn more about the game series I grew up with. Your passion is contagious. Keep being you mate thanks again!
@@Jrose11 oh that is shper interesting. Inhope your fix will work. Thanks for the reply
Not till gen 6
Game Freak is like: WE DON'T TALK ABOUT BRUNO!!!
Good to have you back man!!
surprised you didn't use leech seed/ subseed, especially with the toxic/seed glitch in gen I
Then you didn't watch until the end. He specifically arrested that strat
Yea he said it would not be availible. Not 100% sure but isn't it possible to have a level 7 male bulbasaur with leech seed and a female bulbasaur, so the egg bulbasaur already starts with leech seed?
I love the impossible challenges. So happy to see it back! It's one of the main reason I can't wait to see you upload!
Gotto admit I was a bit dissapointed that this was just the elite 4, I would have loved to see a full lvl 5 playtrough.
Sounds like an extremely annoying run...
@@naphackDT Pokémon Challenges did it in Platinum
When I saw this video initially in my sub box I was like "...ehhhhh..." but this was exciting, thrilling, and more than anything else, FUN. Thank you for the great content :)
So how difficult would you rate this compared to your other experiments, was it easier than any of the single pokemon runs?
Imagine this same run but with wrap and leech seed added to it. Would be brutal. It'd become "how many lvl5 Pokémon do I need to beat the game".
Regarding the Leech Seed tidbit at the end, couldn't you have bred an Exeggcute with Leech Seed + Sleep Powder + Toxic + Substitute? Or was that not a legal combination?
Breeding didn't exist then.
@@Crusina He was using eggs from gen 2 traded into gen 1 so yes breeding existed. He was also using gen 2's level 5 moveset rather than gen 1s.
Ah
WOO JROSE UPLOADS HERE WE GO
