My single most impactful Pokémon memory was BEGGING my mom to take me to Toys R Us for the 3 hour Mew distribution after a soccer game when I was 8. I still have that Mew on my copy of LeafGreen til this day. This is still so much cooler. What a special shiny to have!
If you can trade it to Emerald, you can clone Mew in that game and have basically unlimited Mews as long as you leave at least one in Gen 3. If you want to learn how to clone in Emerald, just search "cloning glitch Emerald"

For future reference, both Bulbapedia and Serebii have individual pages for every existing move and they always include the Japanese name with its proper characters near the top of the page, right next to the English name.
I actually set out on a shiny Mew quest of my own back in 2022. Obtaining the Japanese cartridge, beating the game (in Japanese obviously), sending the cartridge out to have the old sea map injected and shiny hunting it took almost a year to do, and after failing it at 1401 encounters, I finally obtained it at 3332. THEN, I spent the ridiculous time and effort to transfer the mon from console to console so that I could have it in the modern Pokémon titles on the Switch. It was an insane process to go through, but it's also an awesome flex. Way to go on getting yours, Johnstone. 🎉🎉🎉
@@DirectorChicken There was some of both. I tried to keep the console on as much as possible to minimize frame overlap, but sometimes it would die or I wanted to save its battery for long trips, so sometimes I would start from frame one.

@@juannaym8488sometimes code is missed or buggy! that’s why modern games constantly receive patches to update unintended features and bugs, alongside balancing for certain types of games. when it comes to old, hard copies of games for systems that wouldn’t have an internet connection, you can’t patch things directly. so a lot of games would be sent out with some code that got missed no matter how many times they looked over it and it would just become an unintended feature 😅
Congrats on getting your beautiful blue boy. While I didn’t get a copy of Japanese Emerald that had the event on the cart, I did hunt my Shiny Mew on Japanese Emerald after injecting the Wonder Card. It became my longest hunt ever: 17,526 encounters. I was legitimately going crazy while hunting it. Once I got it, I knew I would transfer it out, so I went the extra mile and got it every single Ribbon it could possibly have. Since then, I’ve made sure to get it every possible Ribbon and Mark it could get, including the Master Rank Ribbon from the brief moment it was allowed in SwSh Ranked Battles and the Mightiest Mark from the Mewtwo Tera Raid event.

The feeling of really going somewhere for an event made these games feel alive, like they were more than just a game. They had treasures just waiting for you to get the keys to unlock them. It's a magical feeling that's just... not really there anymore. Online distributions are convenient, but they aren't _special._ Going to those events in real life, you could just feel the passion in the room. Passion for Pokémon. I think it might have been a big part of why I loved the series so much in my younger years but have since kind of outgrown it. Events like these just don't really happen much anymore, and that's kind of depressing.

I used an r4 to get the old sea map a couple of years ago and shiny hunted mew on my childhood gba sp. That mew is easily my favourite pokemon i own and seeing the blue coming across the screen was a moment I'll never forget. I can only imagine how it feels to have a legitimate one! yeah i was a bit suspicious but i had the same reasoning as you, The map was on its own, no other event items. Makes sense when you factor in the time between the events in real life and short amount of playtime. Odds really feel legit

I remember waiting on line at Toys R Us for the Mew in 2006. I think I waited for just over an hour and traded an Oddish for it as it was distributed via link trade. I still have it. On a somewhat less related note, my oldest sister was one of a few at the same Toys R Us to be selected to get a Mew for Pokémon Blue when that was still new. She ended up releasing it because my other sister just wanted the PokéDex data and she was spiteful.
I got a copy of pokemon emerald a few years ago and noticed it had the old sea map but thought he already got the mew. after watching this i decided to check the faraway island and i couldnt believe mew iis actually there. Im 90% sure its legit because it was the same scenario you had but the elite four was defeated, no gold frontier medals.... im so excited to start this hunt!
for those who are curious about the math. if you get 100 mews an hour which equates to a mew every 36 seconds or 2400 mews a day and if it took him 4390 mews, that means it took around approx 1 day 19 hours and 54 minutes aka 43 hours and 54 minutes aka 2634 minutes of game time to get the shiny mew.
I remember how long that line was to get Mew at Toys R Us, it was out the door. My dad actually convinced the person distributing the mew's to give us two so that we could buy my brother leafgreen to give it to him. Such an awesome memory.

One of my core memories is going to Toys R Us and getting my mew with my sister! Didn't realize how lucky we were to have this rare event Pokemon and it still lives in my copy of emerald!
This is so incredibly cool!! Ever so slight correction though bc I’m a big nerd: you can run away, leave, and comeback, for any legendaries in this game which is very convenient for dodging emerald’s lack of random seed. The same doesn’t work in R/S, however. Congrats on the shiny find and even more rare game find!!
Trade it onto a flash cart, back up the save on a computer, trade it back, and then trade it from the backup file onto another Gen 3 game to move it forward. Best of both worlds, and other people can download it.
I’m a little late to the party on this video, but I would like to share a tip for people who want to do this hunt themselves without risk of failing since you can actually account for every single dangerous thing Mew is capable of. Obviously the easiest, but most boring method would be to use a Master Ball. But if you’re like a lot of people and want it in something more unique, I’ve got a better strategy. I hunted this a little over a year ago and came at it with a Smeargle using the following setup: Spore to put it to sleep, Metronome and Imprison to make sure it can’t use Metronome to explode or flee, and Trick while holding Leftovers since it will Transform into the Smeargle and start to Struggle. Because of how Struggle works in Gen III, the Leftovers outpace the damage it does to itself. You could probably swap out Spore for something else, like possibly Transform (if you want to prevent it from transforming into Smeargle so you can keep seeing Mew), but the sleep does help the catch rate. Other than that, just make sure to bring plenty of balls. I ended up being way over prepared and catching it in one ball since its catch rate isn’t that low, but always better safe than sorry. Hope this helps someone!
Oddest thing I noticed was that the colons were still present in the level display. In the English versions, only Ruby and Sapphire had those, dropped in FRLG and onwards for a cleaner interface. I had no idea that was entirely a localization thing.
It seems weird that they would bother programming in all of these extra events only for such a tiny percentage of players to ever see them legitimately.
Talking about Rayquaza, the best save spot is in front of Rayquaza. The Nature is randomized on stationary Pokémon. Once the battle starts, the Nature is now set. You can test that, by saving the Master Ball, and using it to see how the Nature differs based on reloading the save file.
Man I really enjoy your videos as I think the stuff you set up to do is super cool. But that cartridge story has heavy “my uncle that works at Nintendo” vibes to it 😆
Man I plan to do this hunt eventually myself! Not quite as insane, I’m playing on emulator but even if it’s not legit in anyway there’s just something so novel about going for a hunt this exclusive. Good to know about this method! I don’t think RNG manipulation like I did for my Treecko will work here (For clarity I only manipulated because of the broken RNG, I personally enjoyed it quite a bit as it’s more about skill than luck since you have to be frame perfect. Still a very satisfying method at least to me)

I don't think that putting personal value onto shiny Pokémon is goofy, but at the end of the day the only person who gets to decide what your shiny Pokémon mean to you is you. Haters and gatekeepers will always hate and gatekeep, so if you think your shiny is neat, then to you it's neat, end of discussion!
While I don’t approve of Pokemon being locked into certain events, I do sort of miss when catching these mythical and legendaries was more mysterious and fun. Pokemon should just do it like how it was with the Regi trio in Emerald, make it a bit of a scavenger hunt or a fun puzzle. Make it feel fun and exciting again to seek out rare Pokemon. Yeah some people will inevitably look for the solution online, but so what? Plenty of other people will want to go through the challenge themselves.
6:16 it’s also entirely possible for an American to have flown out to Japan for the event, so there could be some English copies that have the event on them legitimately

The pokemon Emerald rng seed wasn't meant to be the same every time it's just a bug. The devs forgot to implement the "random seed picker".

yeah i was a bit suspicious but i had the same reasoning as you, The map was on its own, no other event items. Makes sense when you factor in the time between the events in real life and short amount of playtime.

I remember waiting on line at Toys R Us for the Mew in 2006. I think I waited for just over an hour and traded an Oddish for it as it was distributed via link trade. I still have it.
On a somewhat less related note, my oldest sister was one of a few at the same Toys R Us to be selected to get a Mew for Pokémon Blue when that was still new. She ended up releasing it because my other sister just wanted the PokéDex data and she was spiteful.
I got a copy of pokemon emerald a few years ago and noticed it had the old sea map but thought he already got the mew. after watching this i decided to check the faraway island and i couldnt believe mew iis actually there. Im 90% sure its legit because it was the same scenario you had but the elite four was defeated, no gold frontier medals.... im so excited to start this hunt!
for those who are curious about the math. if you get 100 mews an hour which equates to a mew every 36 seconds or 2400 mews a day and if it took him 4390 mews, that means it took around approx 1 day 19 hours and 54 minutes aka 43 hours and 54 minutes aka 2634 minutes of game time to get the shiny mew.

I remember how long that line was to get Mew at Toys R Us, it was out the door. My dad actually convinced the person distributing the mew's to give us two so that we could buy my brother leafgreen to give it to him. Such an awesome memory.

One of my core memories is going to Toys R Us and getting my mew with my sister! Didn't realize how lucky we were to have this rare event Pokemon and it still lives in my copy of emerald!

Ever so slight correction though bc I’m a big nerd: you can run away, leave, and comeback, for any legendaries in this game which is very convenient for dodging emerald’s lack of random seed. The same doesn’t work in R/S, however.

Trade it onto a flash cart, back up the save on a computer, trade it back, and then trade it from the backup file onto another Gen 3 game to move it forward. Best of both worlds, and other people can download it.

I’m a little late to the party on this video, but I would like to share a tip for people who want to do this hunt themselves without risk of failing since you can actually account for every single dangerous thing Mew is capable of. Obviously the easiest, but most boring method would be to use a Master Ball. But if you’re like a lot of people and want it in something more unique, I’ve got a better strategy. I hunted this a little over a year ago and came at it with a Smeargle using the following setup: Spore to put it to sleep, Metronome and Imprison to make sure it can’t use Metronome to explode or flee, and Trick while holding Leftovers since it will Transform into the Smeargle and start to Struggle. Because of how Struggle works in Gen III, the Leftovers outpace the damage it does to itself. You could probably swap out Spore for something else, like possibly Transform (if you want to prevent it from transforming into Smeargle so you can keep seeing Mew), but the sleep does help the catch rate. Other than that, just make sure to bring plenty of balls. I ended up being way over prepared and catching it in one ball since its catch rate isn’t that low, but always better safe than sorry. Hope this helps someone!

Oddest thing I noticed was that the colons were still present in the level display. In the English versions, only Ruby and Sapphire had those, dropped in FRLG and onwards for a cleaner interface. I had no idea that was entirely a localization thing.
It seems weird that they would bother programming in all of these extra events only for such a tiny percentage of players to ever see them legitimately.

Talking about Rayquaza, the best save spot is in front of Rayquaza. The Nature is randomized on stationary Pokémon. Once the battle starts, the Nature is now set. You can test that, by saving the Master Ball, and using it to see how the Nature differs based on reloading the save file.

Man I plan to do this hunt eventually myself! Not quite as insane, I’m playing on emulator but even if it’s not legit in anyway there’s just something so novel about going for a hunt this exclusive. Good to know about this method! I don’t think RNG manipulation like I did for my Treecko will work here
(For clarity I only manipulated because of the broken RNG, I personally enjoyed it quite a bit as it’s more about skill than luck since you have to be frame perfect. Still a very satisfying method at least to me)

I don't think that putting personal value onto shiny Pokémon is goofy, but at the end of the day the only person who gets to decide what your shiny Pokémon mean to you is you. Haters and gatekeepers will always hate and gatekeep, so if you think your shiny is neat, then to you it's neat, end of discussion!

I love how I was watching your recent video today and was like "Huh, I wonder when he will uploa-" and boom
While I don’t approve of Pokemon being locked into certain events, I do sort of miss when catching these mythical and legendaries was more mysterious and fun. Pokemon should just do it like how it was with the Regi trio in Emerald, make it a bit of a scavenger hunt or a fun puzzle. Make it feel fun and exciting again to seek out rare Pokemon. Yeah some people will inevitably look for the solution online, but so what? Plenty of other people will want to go through the challenge themselves.
I also did this about six times when I was a kid . I was so lucky that they all had perfect IVs and natures too.
