@@matthewfoley8088 agree...they are. Mikaela is obviously the focus with her singing and her harp. At least to my ear, she could better develop her playing style to match the style of the brothers. Sometimes her cascading runs and fills sound odd against their groove...and, of course, sometimes her playing sounds absolutely terrific. My only issue with them as a band is that the tempos and arrangements of their songs (own songs and covers) are generally similar, like the Cowboy Junkies or whatever, which makes listening to them for more than a couple songs. well...

On Feb 18, 1971 I saw the Grateful Dead perform at the Capitol Theater in Portchester. My 3rd Dead show, I was 20. Fabulous concert, in fact my favorite show out of all the GD shows I've seen. At the end of the first set they did a medley of Dark Star/Wharf Rat (first ever!)/something folks call Beautiful Jam/Dark Star .... an utterly fabulous stretch of music (and St Stephen from the 2nd set). The way Mikela and Southern Star played in this clip is really true to the original music I heard 50 years ago, which is kind of amazing when you think about all the jamming in both. Well done, love it! (btw, if you purchase the 50th anniversary American Beauty reissue it includes a high quality copy of the original GD show on 2/18/71. check it out if you like insanely creative music on one of the Dead's best nights)
Check out Billy Strings, Molly Tuttle Taz, Kingfish Ingram all former child prodigies. For want of a better word. Americana, is in good hands for decades
im weeping tears of joy and sadness at the same time... sadness just due in part to whats been going on in my life... joy for the music of the dead being represented so beautifully
I watch this in disbelief. So magical with Mikaela's beautiful voice and the band all in sync. Then the jam between during Warf Rat is amazing. Now fast forward to St. Stephen. HOLY WAH ! They crush it ! This whole group together is magical. Congratulations to you all from Wisconsin. Keep up the magic. Once in awhile you get shown the light in the strangest of places.....
30 years along the road and all the original primal Deadheads in their 70’s pushing 80! These younger bands still showing up for the impossible task of capturing the magic…Kudos to all for the effort! This is the best I’ve heard in a while..especially the highly underrated MOTM barely a misplaced note 🧚🏻♀️
Wanted to throw in a comment. Solid. Big Thx. As a life-long Dead fan I'm inspired. Saw them multiple times in the 70's. It's so nice to hear interpretations and expansions of their work. I think they would love this continuation of their .... love of music.
My jaw is absolutely on the floor. I’m 34 and have been a dead head since about 8 years old, the magical music has absolutely taken me. But my jaw has hurt for 42 minutes straight. This music is absolutely incredible. The bassist absolutely nails it, not many who can sound like Phil.
That was one of the best Grateful Dead concerts I have ever been to, and I went to a bunch in 1968-1975. Thanks for channeling the Dead so well! Garcia would have loved it! Way cool!
I'm blown away by "Mountains of the Moon" already and have the rest of the show to watch. I also get to see this goddess perform at Camp Creek on Thursday. I can't wait!
Been watching a lot of your performances recently and your take on the Dead's mighty musical legacy is magnificent. Been hoping to hear you do Dark Star and you really do it justice. Love peace and a load of respect. 🖤
You kids are seriously going places! I’m so super impressed! Strong, fresh and prolific musical talent here. Every player on stage. The harp is in a league of its own and is angelic in the beauty it shines forth as sound And hey dude playing the bass, I hope you read this. I don’t know your name but I’ll be looking for and following your work from here out. Your the reason I stopped what I was doing to write this comment. I have to tell you right now…….brother man you are doing Master Lesh PROUD !! The aspects of his essence that you have gathered, absorbed and then translated in your own voice here is just so perfect! You have a similar power and decisive boldness in your playing, balanced with a natural finesse. You have done him proud!! Keep it up and you have many galaxies to transcribe for the minds of many to come. Just had to stop and give you props dude! Bravo bravo!
Just found them, unfortunately I’m gonna be out of town March 13 but I want them to come back to Jackson Mississippi. It’s like I told my twin brother “ I wanna be able to hang out with my kids when they’re 30 not 16 so expose them to badass music now” 😎✌️
how have I never heard of this band? amazing. great production, sounds amazing even on my dell speakers at the office. so much for trying to get some work done. I cannot stop watching.
That was a special performance. I have never heard this band before tonight. This and a Birdsong they did is just awesome. Congrats for making the world a better place.
This band is as good as it gets. Great choice of instruments, and they approach the music with such sensitivity and humility. The Stratocaster covers the earlier sound and the Ric reminds me of the Guild bass Phil played. Of course the pedal steel adds all kinds of textures and represents Garcia's period of steel obsession. The harp is just an outstandingly beautiful addition as well. And as always, if you have a good drummer you have a good band. They really capture the earlier spirit of sonic exploration the Dead had before it became (just a bit) of a grind for the band, or for Jerry at least, in the last few years. Keep the Dead alive forever!
Like the 70-78 era for me. They've channeled the way The Dead would each go their own way during jams yet it all jells perfectly with spontaneous phrasing so there's always something new.
So nice and easy to listen to. Ms. Davis sings so mesmerizingly wonderfully marvelous, that just simply complements the band as a whole. ABSOLUTELY LOVELY ❤️
Holy cow. I just saw her being interviewed between sets for Dead & Co. so I came to check out the Bird Song, which was amazing, and now THIS!!! Just, wow.
So beautiful🌹, my God. This band is special, I saw Mikaela and Southern Star where they did the entirety of the beloved Live Dead album in concert, and it was absolute magic. They did a Bird Song encore and it was majestic and trippy. Thank you for this gift✌.
@@thomasbedell4770 HI, I'm not sure brother, I would like to know that myself. It was so epic though. I caught the October 30th 2019 Syracuse show. I keep hoping to find a recording of it(or even better, video.)The first set was Mikaela and Southern Star originals(great songs). The second set was the complete Live/Dead suite and then a Bird Song encore was the icing on the psychedelic cake. The world needs a recording/video of this magic happening🙂🤩. They only played the entire Live/Dead 5 times I think, to celebrate the albums 50th anniversary. One of the shows ( Philadelphia I think?) got canceled because Mikaela lost her voice. It was an amazng night played in a small bar, not even sold out. The tickets were only 10 dollars, the deal of a lifetime lol. Heres hoping man that a recording surfaces. Oh, the poster for the Live/Dead mini tour was great. It was a replica of the Live/Dead album cover with Mikaela replacing the woman on the album cover, it was sweet. I made a short story long😄 lol, have a good day man.
@@gregchamberlin9910 Thanks, Greg. I’d love to have the experience this band line doing these songs. $10 tickets takes back to 1968: 2 shows, early and late. OK we need more of this, so good to see the younger generation catching on otherwise all this great music will die.
Agreed!
Check out Billy Strings, Molly Tuttle Taz, Kingfish Ingram all former child prodigies. For want of a better word. Americana, is in good hands for decades
@@davmets86 Marcus King also .. hes one of my favs
davmets86 America is doomed don't kid yourself.. 😕
@@daveyboy8907 he wrote “Americana”. And America may be doomed, but we will go down with a beautiful soundtrack apparently.
Such a good version of Mountains of The Moon.
Weeping tears of joy through Warfrat right now...
im weeping tears of joy and sadness at the same time... sadness just due in part to whats been going on in my life... joy for the music of the dead being represented so beautifully
Who was cutting onions at 30 minutes, both times I watched it?
@@bahamadon7950 on my 1132 day of Sobriety. I am a proud Wharf Rat 🐀
This is absolutely spiritual on many levels.
Mountains>Dark Star> Wharf Rat> Beautiful jam> Dark Star>St. Stephen, for those keeping score at home.
Thanks for the list. She’s done the best covers of the Dead 💀
Flawless. Just simply flawless. You captured the essence and spirit of the Dead without outright mimicking them. Superb work.
That was one of the best Grateful Dead concerts I have ever been to, and I went to a bunch in 1968-1975. Thanks for channeling the Dead so well! Garcia would have loved it! Way cool!
I really dig this performance, especially Wharf Rat. You all did Jerry justice. I enjoyed this immensely ♾
Unbelievable...that bass is the best I've heard. Givin Phil a run for his money.
He's quite imitative of Phil. Doesn't quite "pop" like Phil, but good none the less. All the musicians have studied Dead's stylisms.
I wish this performance was on Spotify. Absolutely mindblowing.
We are all so lucky to be on the planet at this time, with music like this being made.
I'm blown away by "Mountains of the Moon" already and have the rest of the show to watch. I also get to see this goddess perform at Camp Creek on Thursday. I can't wait!
Thank you spirit for this most precious reincarnation, you all shine light for the future of music!
I can't remember the last time I smiled for 43 continuous minutes. Stellar performance!
The harp is in a league of its own and is angelic in the beauty it shines forth as sound
And hey dude playing the bass, I hope you read this. Bravo bravo!
that bass is healla dope
couldnt agree more.
Well Said
Agreed. That bass is incredible and pulls all the rest of the instruments together for me....
Bassist is a beast
Just found them, unfortunately I’m gonna be out of town March 13 but I want them to come back to Jackson Mississippi. It’s like I told my twin brother “ I wanna be able to hang out with my kids when they’re 30 not 16 so expose them to badass music now” 😎✌️
I'm sure this wont' ;be a popular comment, but honestly this is better than any Dead sets I've ever heard. The vocals alone make it sooooo good.
This is great! Best Dark Star I've heard. Been following the Dead since 68 - 69.
This is the warm, comforting embrace the world needs right now!
@10:20 from there on is just pure beauty. I love the Mountains of the Moon too but the Dark Star is just 👌
Well freakin done guys!
August would tear up!
Just finished Mountains of the Mountains of the Moon. Can I have my breath back?
Transcendental bliss, smooth as silk!
Wow I am an old deadhead and I must say this band is good chit. I'll go see them if they play Seattle area
Offf love the Grateful Dead vibe 🌈💜🤗
Saw them numerous times in the 70’s ☮️ You all do them proud 😘
Jesus Christ. Dark star>warf rat>beautiful jam. That beautiful jam just brought me to tears. They captured it perfectly. They really fucking did it.
A nightingale who picks strings to chime with that crisp Kool air voice!!
Solid✌️
I am mystified as to why anyone would downvote this. Absolutely stellar.
Mountains of the Moon the way it should be.
Lol but we certainly wouldn't have this without the original influence. .
how have I never heard of this band? amazing. great production, sounds amazing even on my dell speakers at the office. so much for trying to get some work done. I cannot stop watching.
That was a special performance. I have never heard this band before tonight. This and a Birdsong they did is just awesome. Congrats for making the world a better place.
Frankly I'd rather see these folks live than whatever iteration of 'the dead' that is still going .......... THAT's how high I rate this !
Thank you. I’m a Gen X deadhead. I’ve seen and heard many covers of the dead. I will remember this one. Very calming and engaging. Loved it .
ONE VERY LUCKY MAN IN THIS WORLD WHOM I KINDA ENVY....MIKAELA'S HUSBAND. SHE IS ABSOLUTELY TALENTED AND BEAUTIFUL TO NO END!!!!
What a Band the Bass & Pedal Steel on this is absolutely outstanding, not forgetting the Drummer who's playing for two.
WOW...this was next level...
Just, wow.
Darkness shrugs and bids the day goodbye 🥰 its beautiful
these guys are on it...................they are truly taking the sound and feel of these songs back to 1969...........beautiful!
So beautiful🌹, my God. This band is special, I saw Mikaela and Southern Star where they did the entirety of the beloved Live Dead album in concert, and it was absolute magic. They did a Bird Song encore and it was majestic and trippy. Thank you for this gift✌.
Heard her describe their decision to play the entire Live Dead. Did that get recorded?
When I heard Tedeshi Trucks do Layla live 2 yrs ago, now released as an album, it blew me away. These songs done within respect snd live but with a new voice are fantastic.
@@thomasbedell4770 Tedeschi Trucks doing Layla must have been amazing, I'm definitely going to have to check that out, thanks Thomas. The new bands playing these songs with passion and as you said respect is awesome. Yeah the 10 dollar ticket price was like a trip back in time too, old school prices, lol, it was beautiful man.
@@gregchamberlin9910 believe TTB covered Mad Dogs&Englishmen as well; makes sense, given their line-up.
Absolutely Brilliant!
And you even added your take on the Played Only once "Beautiful Jam" From 2/18/71
many thanks...
I hear not only 2/18/71, but a little bit of the DS jam from 6/24/70, too.
"Beautiful Jam" is my favorite bit of musical bliss ever.
@@turnyourfriendson Try the "Dark Star" from 11/2/69.
Fantastic harp, by Mikaela Davis.
I can’t remember how many times I’ve played this on my phone! It’s probably a few dozen times at least!
This is so rich and pure. In fact, I prefer her and her band over the original sound. Now that’s saying something! 😊
Havent heard Dead tunes played so beautifully in a long time,my favorite band.goose bumps every ware man so tastey
Beside myself with joy and a few tears to hear y'all take on the Beautiful Jam and transport us. Thank you.
The best thing I have heard or seen in a very long time. Immense talent from top to bottom. Flawless musicianship and arrangements. Just chills and good vibes throughout the entirety of this set. More please...
I thought Bruce playing the accordion was an instrument I would never see playing GD music, thank you David Gans for introducing me to Mikaela and band, you are superb!!
