The fact he also let the Soothsayer (Goat) free means he isn't 100% heartless as well. He could have thrown her in prison or worse after he had no use for her.

In Chinese culture, there is something called a hungry ghost, which tries to eat but can never be full and is forever hungry. In Lord Shen’s case, it is power. The last part when the cannon fell on him, he looked like he realized he would never be happy and chose to commit suicide instead to end his obsessive suffering
We learn a lot more about the Furious Five in Secrets of the Furious Five, and Secrets of the Scroll. For Tigress in particular, she grew up in an orphanage full of prey animals, all of whom were terrified of her. She spent her formative years angry, isolated, and scared, before Shifu arrived to help her.
Every compelling protagonist has trauma in their backstory that they have overcome. We had a _hint_ of it in Volume I, but _this_ is the volume where it was brought into vivid focus and pulled at our heart strings. But they had to have had this worked out _before_ they wrote the _first_ one.

I’m not one to cry at movies or at shows, Bisscute, but there have certainly been others that cried at this movie. Magic Magy, her associate Foxy Laura, Trixy Blue of Bulgaria, Natalie Gold of Canada, Liala Naema of Britain, Sessis of Sweden, and several more. Perhaps maybe even Clariss of Columbia. I gotta hand it to you though. You stayed strong till the very end. It DID blow what happened to Po, his mother, and the entire village. You may have hated Tai Lung but he was a broken type of villain whereas Shen was just pure evil and if Shen ever really WAS broken, it was only AFTER he became pure evil. The next villain though is more influenced than pure evil but all I can tell you bout him at this moment was he used to be a friend of Oogway’s. Speaking of Oogway, you remember one thing he stated? One often meets his or her destiny on the road he or she takes to avoid it. Shen met his destiny cuz he attempted to avoid it by killing some of the pandas. Plus, there are also less than 1,600 giant pandas left in the wild. They are, however, no longer on the endangered list no more though.
I love tigerss too...i want po and tigress to end up together....soon kunfu panda 4 gonna release.... please watch angry birds cuz it's as good as kunfu panda
Interesting Fact, when Shen's cannon falls in the lake, an alternative ending Shen is sinking in the lake and Po saves him, but they changed it to teach a lesson that not all people seek redemption
