We really need a technical equipment to foreseen the flood situation just like the Japan have for earthquake. It is also time to the people of Assam to be aware of flooding during the starting of Manson every year. I also strongly object the building of damns without looking the area surrounding of it. Easy to blame climate change & nature Pakli, more researched reportage was expected of you, the real factors are -
    1. Embarkments on river to counter floods, due to which the river beds have increased by meters over the decades, without embarkments the sediments during floods used to spread across the fertile fields, not only norishing the soil but in turn also raising the area as sediments get deposited once floods recedes from fields. This stopped due to the continious embarkments on both sides of rivers. So first couple of decades after embarkments were built was all hunky dory but once riverbeds became higher than surrounding areas, during the seasonal flooding, now the water has no way to return back to the rivers.
    2. Soil needed to raise one's house, river sand was uses, this system was stopped by givt, resulting in cartels smuggling river soils & cutting of hills for soil needed for raising the habitats, in turns the hills becames unstable due to deforestation & removing soil for constructions, result - landslides.
    3. No dredging of rivers takes place, which should be a continious 365 day effort as its natural for rivers to carry sediments. This never takes place, with embarkments on either sides, no dredging of rivers, what else would be the result?
    This is basic common sense, alas! Neither our leaders nor journalists have it so blame everything on climate change!!! Have witnessed rains in assam for past 4 decades, neither the rains have increased nor actual cubic volume of water, but higher water level in the river is simply because of higher river bed level, more floods in surrounding areas is because their levels are lower than that of rivers due to construction of embarkments...As a first step towards a sustainable living remove the embarkments, let rivers flow naturally, seasonal floods in fields norishes the soil and raises their level naturally, and water recedes back to river very quickly instead of stagnant water needing pumping back to river sand fields remaining inundated with flood waters for months.!!!

      Well said. Hope these journalist listen and understand the real faults and the authorities apprehend the criminals. Its noy only taking place in assam but in other states also where the state goverment is weak or corrupted. It affects the farmers mostly and people living in cities have no concern for them. Political leaders have no interest to solve by studying how other asian nations have solved such problems. When they look at nature they think of only how to make more business for themselves by all means. Blame the voters who took their corrupted money and voted these corrupted leaders. Good example of a political party which has great concern for the state's nature assets is naam thamizhar katchi from thamizhnadu. Ntk members have done numerous projects without the state or centrel goverment help to protect the nature and the farmers for the last 10years. Media giants like don't bother to show what hsppens in the south that much. Ntk is the only political party in india to allocate 50% seats for women in any election it participates. It has not won any seat in any election because voters are not aware and are corrupted.

    Thnx Wion for covering this news. There are many reasons for annual flood in Assam. 1. No proper drainage system. 2. Landslides on river beds, the river changes the course,widens and gets into people's homes n everywhere. 3. No river walls to stop the rain water overflooding. 4. Assam is a valley, wtr cms from the hills and gathers in the valley. 5. People making houses in the wetlands and filling water bodies. 6. The Brahmaputra is not dugged, they could dug and use the sand, this will rid us a bit with the floods.

    Not taking any major initiatives to control floods even after 75 years of independence is a serious blot on the quality of Indian leadership, both at state and federal levels. What have they done to prevent this recurring event annually and repeatedly, which is destroying lives and properties worth billions. All homes should be built at least ten feet above the maximum water level. Deep silting of all rivers, building flood embarkments, building high walls to direct river water to flow out quickly are some of the activities to be undertaken in a systematic way. When are they going to start this work?

    It is politician who was neglecting the issue of flood since lndependence.The Engineers responsible for flood control was misusing fund by unscientific method and don't have any idea how to control flood ,and only repair dams by sand bags, bamboo spar and felt that it was their festive time. Assamese people don't expect some kilo of rice,dal as relief material but final relief from flood at any cost

Better to allow remote states including the north eastern states to become independent. Corruption and incompetent govt will not change anything for many decades ahead.

      @@somn2425 What you need is a dam system for flood control. multiple dams to stage the excess water and levies along the banks to direct the water. You could also put in pipe lines to send water to dryer areas.

    My guess would be that the reason it floods in Assam, is because it rains every year. Perhaps you should not build your house in a flood plain, or build it on stilts. Or perhaps it time to build some dams and leaves to redirect flood waters.

    • @Indianindenmark1317
      @Indianindenmark1317 2 года назад

      Yes, it rains and the water comes from the hilly areas and gather in the Assam valley. Bt its also cz there is no proper drainage system, people r mking houses in wetlands, no river walls, river bed erosion that led to changing river course and flooding.
