- The iron and steel industry accounts for around 7% of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions globally*. Finding ways to cut carbon emissions from its production is vital to tackling climate change. In Oman, Mr Ali and Mr Lobo are using solar power technology to help produce ferrochrome - which makes steel stainless and shiny - with fewer emissions. Watch how.

Why do you use photovoltaik and not directly solar energy. Would be much cheaper. I mean why do you want to produce current if you just want to heat something? Isn't it smarter to just use mirrors focussing on one spot to heat a liquid? And this liquid could give heat to the oven.
Because electric power is very mature form of energy, it can be efficiently stored and easily modulated/controlled to operate according to varying conditions.
