I heard that too! I have to laugh; modern drummers and music stores think the Speed King is crap (along with many others), yet bonzo did some pretty fancy footwork. I learned long ago that any bass-drum deficiencies were not the fault of my pedal.
I love hearing him make noises and grunts and sounds as he is experiencing the feel of his groove...you can hear his voice in the open mikes around the snare and I love this so much!!! He is raw and in this lazy backbeat making Zep the Best Ever!! RIP JB!!!! Forever Grateful!!
I've heard John carrying on before, but never quite like in this recording. I hope more isolated tracks make their way out of the vaults because this is pretty awesome!
Only just realised he's referencing the keyboard part when he plays the heavy bass drum parts. Reminds me of Keith Jarrett, if anyone knows him, you'll know what I mean 😂
As a young drummer in the 80s because of my grandfather who also played the drums I was a huge Buddy Rich fan but with my drummer friends there were two camps. It was John Bonham or Neil Peart and in my teens I was into flamboyant drumming and didn't appreciate what Bonhams really was. Of course I respected and liked him, but I didn't realize his brilliance and talent until I got older. He was and Is the Greatest drummer ever. His grooves and playing are absolutely amazing.
There is so much competition built up by fans of these two although they had such different styles/genres as to almost make comparisions pointless. "Flamboyant" sums up Peart well. Definitely technically impressive and extremely accurate, but personally too many drums and not enough earthy, primitive, sexy swaggery groove which Bonham had by the bucketload.
Hysterical Ed. I laughed my ads of listening to this master drummer at work and giving Percy a run for his money....lol. Such a shame that this much talent had to leave us so soon. And to think that his technique is STILL dissected and admired by so many drummers. Neil Pratt even says his main influence was Bonzo. R.I.P. MASTER.
I know there are a lot of great drummers but nobody is like Bonham. His style is unmistakable, powerful, deep, chilling. He really is the Hammer of the Gods
This is why he is the greatest we've seen and will see. Buddy, Keith, Neil... and more. we hear you. But this song is the exact and perfect example of how a rather mundane 4/4 slow tempo song is elevated in parts beyond belief. The swing he had, on a straight 4/4 and then the tasty bits and then a bunch of tasty at the end. A true master.
Well put. I love the drums as an instrument and always listen out for them in songs, but with Bonzo I truly *hear* them. He had an atmosphere/presence around his playing that was incredibly special , and the menacing growling here just adds the cherry on top.
This must be an out-take. The fills aren't all the same as on the full recording. Regardless, it's a fantastic example of his sound and feel - what a treasure this is.

@@chrismcfaggons6694 I would agree Neil is right up there, but I'd hate to say one is better than the other. They both deserve to be respected as the best at what they did. I appreciate the insane talent of Peart, but personally I'd rather listen to Bonham hammer away. The dude just grooves

John is my absolute favorite drummer of all time, and why I've always wanted to play drums. I got my first toy snare drum Christmas of 1975 when I was 4 years old, and Led Zeppelin was on the radio constantly. I tune my vintage drums low just like John did.
Absolutely incredible. Can’t even detect a lot of the detail of his playing (ghost notes, etc) in the album recordings, but it still somehow adds to the greater good of the song almost unconsciously.

He really hit that bass drum HARD.
Some people say he was actually an incredibly light player but the compression made him seem super loud, who knows ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Kevin Parker pointed that out. He's not hitting as hard as the compression makes it sound.
You can even hear the squeak of the bass pedal
He’s not hitting them any harder than a big band jazz player. He’s just hitting them right
