Great video on the application of rope rigging and knot use. This is something different that I have not seen in other videos besides the same old ridgeline, how to fly a tarp, and tying to a steak. This type of instruction is more direct and full filling in the use and application of rope rigging and knot use. More rope rigging videos would be most appreciated.

Awesome AF Video.... Bowline: I have used 1000's of times around trees and myself - learned to tie it around myself with one hand for rescue (never have needed rescue so far). Tautline Hitch: 10000's of times putting up tents. Prusik knot: 10000's of times for tarp ridge lines and other uses including climbing up steep slopes "just like that" you showed.. Fisherman's Knot: too many times to count. Truckers hitch: every time I use my trailer to haul something. I started learning knots at age 4 because my Dad took me to Boy Scouts as he was the Scout Master and didn't have a sitter. I learned knots in Boy Scouts and used them in Boy Scouts and the rest of my life! They are an essential life skill!!! This video and your other videos teaching knots and their practical use are some of the most important videos you have ever done - EVERYONE needs the life skill of knowing how to tie some basic knots and they are fascinating for young kids to learn, practice, and use!!!!

When I was in the Infantry in the Army in Panama, we use to call that a hasty repel at a 45% down hill. We also Used Swiss seat repelling and commando repelling.

The highways are FULL of ladders and shit that someone who didn't know how to tie a proper knot lost. It's MORE than a bushcrafty skill, knots are a pretty essential skill that has been lost recently.
Done like a BOSS. A wise person will practice what was demonstrated and certainly keep the information on file upstairs for that occasional event.

It's spelled as "rappelling", 'repelling' is what one does, when they want someone to go away, they repel that person. Lol

"Muddy, slippery terrain". That describes about 90% of Vancouver Island. LOL. Our solution in the woods was wearing caulk boots which have been around for a hundred years. You can now buy portable caulks which can be put on hiking boots, much like crampons. Excellent video.

This was a very valuable application of knots
Could you do a short video on types of rope? $1k climbing rope v $100 arborist rope with the same working load. $30 hardware store rope of same diameter, but a 300lb working load. Nylon webbing etc….. I keep 100 feet of the cheap hardware rope in my patrol truck just for defending and ascending steep ravines just like this video. Not using for climbing and putting my full weight on it. It has too much stretch and wouldn’t trust it. Also keep shorter lengths for I have used as a safety rope when dealing with emotionally disturbed individuals in dangerous locations like roof tops until fire department can get set up.
Another option that just dawned on me is for a safety catch is to make a slightly longer prussic loop and tying the bowline through it around your chest as always great content Shawn keep up the good work
Nice demonstration. I would like to add a couple of tips here.
1. Consider adding an overhand knot to the bowline to back it up.
2. Keep the loop short on the prusik in case you do fall, but manage to hang on. It might be easier to manipulate it when trying to get back to your feet.
3. Be sure to untie any knots that you put in the rope system before attempting to pull it back up because there's nothing more frustrating than your best retrieval tool becoming stuck.
4. If you have a bag large enough, you can stack the rope as you come back to eliminate the chance of it getting stuck entirely.
Excellent video. Unlike some other instructors, that show things way too fast to grasp the idea, you have slowly explained it in a way that cannot be misconstrued and I thank you for that. Now I know what a Prussic knot is and how to apply it for different applications. Agree on tying the rope to self...if you did slip, could prevent a long fall off a tall cliff. Once saw someone use two of those Prussic knots as ascenders on a rope, one you could rest your foot/ weight in and rest if tired.

I liked your idea of dragging the rope with you using the bowline.
But I think you could improve it by tying a 2nd loop, say 1 or 2 arms length from you, through the prussik loop. Thus, in case you did slip, the rope end would catch you, as it would put tension on the prussik.
The prussik is a very strong safety knot.
I hope the brief description made sense...

I wonder if having the rope around your waste ascending might not make a loop of rope that can snag on brush. Part way up and snagged could be difficult to unfasten the rope around your waste to proceed. Am I missing something?
You'd have to pay attention a little as you climbed back up. I thot of that too, but if you are following the rope up, it should be following the rope too! Anything you snagged a rope on would've snagged you on your way up.
If you attach the prusick to the bowline around your chest you could have a rest and redundancy if you slipped.
was it needed in less than a 45 degree slope

I would use caution tying the bowline to myself for the purpose of dragging the line back up the hill if the slope is brush covered or has rocks poking up. If you catch the trailing bend of the rope on brush or rock you may have to go back down there to get it loose.

The prusik is a facinating knot imho. Multiple usages but the example shown here is most basic yet most useful, simple, quick, and so effective. In this application I like to call it "the knot you can take with you." 👍👍

James Bond used his shoelaces tied into prusik loops to climb the rope in For Your Eyes Only. Yes, I've seen it way too many times.
We actually had to do this scenario in real life when my buddy is sleeping bag came out of his strapping on the bottom outside of his pack with his bedroll and we were on a narrow Goat Trail and it rolled down over a steep embankment and the only way to get back up or down was using a rope not as fancy as your setup but same idea
