- Hi everyone! I get asked about social media a whole lot, so I gave my thoughts on stream / pikat .
We discuss growth strategies and what I believe to be a better alternative to the validation we crave from social platforms. I also really like Majima (Goromi speedpaint).
00:00 - Fail faster, go next
02:32 - Social media clout
03:44 - Fanart boosts engagement but...
05:55 - How I find validation
06:29 - Why others get more engagement
08:56 - Finding friends

You are absolutely right. At first, getting a bunch of likes on social media can make you feel important like "oh wow random people care about me" but, as a person who used to be extremely dependent on social media validation for their art, eventually those numbers stop being important.
But that one friend who comments "I wanna eat your art" in every post you make, that's what truly matters.
This is so real
ayo. what the hell bro
"You want to fail faster."
Me, a slow artist that takes almost two weeks to make something: 😢

me who takes longer

It's wonderful to see your Goromi make it to RUclips! Also, it feels like this sort of advice is needed quite a bit when I see how often people are asking how to grow their following. "Actually socialize and show care for others" has definitely been more fulfilling in my experience, especially because friends getting excited about the new thing I made is far more personal (plus they're happier to listen to me ramble about it than random passersby who just wanted to drop a quick compliment and go back to forgetting I exist XD)
I mean, it IS a lot easier to get a following than it is to make good friends imo. I think that’s why a lot of people look for followers instead. Plus, unless your friends are also artist(which are even harder to find), the compliments can feel a little less genuine.
While I definitely understand that and have plenty of experience struggling to make friends or connect with people, it's still my personal experience that it was more fulfilling to even have one or two people I know excited to see my art and give encouragement. That said, the video does address that if you want a following, you'll do well with striking style, bright colors, contrast, and by focusing on popular character fanart and repeating what worked if a piece does well. The problem of finding artistic friends comes down to knowing where to look, and Pikat's suggestion of discord or in live classes is also solid advice, but one won't know that a person can be their new artsy friend if they never speak up and make some effort to connect with others. =] It's not easy advice or instantly effective, but it is rewarding.
My problem with the whole 'fail faster' mentality is that its often not clear WHY something fails. Sure, you might have theories, but the performance of stuff can vary so wildly that its really hard to figure out what you're doing right or wrong. Getting feedback from others directly can help, but often my art peers don't really have any guidance for me. So I just end up aimless a lot of the time, unsure why one thing worked and another failed completely. It becomes even more complicated when you're trying to bring money into the picture, because you'll get a bunch of people who say they love your art but they still won't pay to support it in any capacity. Its just really hard to have any clear idea of what does/doesn't work.
That said, a lot of what you said in this video is really accurate I think, and its not mentioned by other art youtubers I've seen very often. I def think there's a huge problem in artist discords of people just dumping their art and never interacting with others. I think its a lot better to stay in a small handful of discords you really enjoy and connect with vs. just being in tons of them and only being there to post your art.
To people who think they are bad at drawing: you aren’t. As long as you keep trying you will improve, it’s human nature. Keep your head up and try not to stress yourself out if your drawing goes under the radar!
ngl the part where you said make connections, really happened for me. i tried to be more outgoing at my work and showed a few collegues drawings cuz it came up in a convo. When a collegue heard in a meeting they were looking for creatives they proposed me. socialize and care has really helped me in that aspect!
Majima truly is everywhere
I can't emphasize the first point enough, fail fast guys. I once posted an animated piece that took me a month and a half and it flopped and that has single-handedly made me stop posting on social medias for a long time.
Looking back I can see the flaws it had AND in the time it took to make this piece I could have made literally 10 other (simpler) pieces.
One smol issue, I'm slow 😢
@@mrhalfsaid1389 aren't we all lol
Dude started going to art meetups irl a couple years ago and it changed my life and the relationship I have with art. It's the #1 piece of advice I give to people who are trying to get into art. It's so motivating to have people around who share your hobby and often removes a lot of that pesky internal negativity that art can bring up.
Now I host two art meetup groups and it's great! All kinds of cool people show up
Pikat is the only artist i like watching now because she still does art, other youtubers always react and never make art. I enjoy her vids so I keep coming back.. i get excited when she uploads
THE ONE PEICE
This video came at the right time for me because I recently decided I want to take my art seriously and I really want to make a career out of it but social media has been super, super discouraging. I really liked your first point because recently I realized I was spending way too much time on illustrations, trying to perfect them for social media but I need to spend that time on actually learning. Failing fast also means learning fast.
I really hope that my art account takes off. I know it requires a lot of time and patience but I am willing to see it through and actually put in the effort instead of getting discouraged and quitting halfway through. Thank you for the video, it genuinely makes me feel less shitty about my art journey!
I got pretty depressed a few weeks back. I sort of distanced myself from posting my art on social media, and ended up deleting a whole bunch of it. It felt less special to me over time because I related the amount of attention to the value of my art. Just couldn't seem to get somewhere despite how hard I was trying. Obviously, this wasn't the right way of thinking.
I have a project I'm working on now over the next one or two years, and it's been fun because I don't have to think about any external pressures. My art has seen some steady improvements, and I go at a pace that works for me. Maybe at a later time, I'll return to sharing it if I regain that confidence.
never had rl art friends. However I do agree that being next to someone who has the same interest as you is an incredible feeling. I used to go to fighting game local to play my favourite game, and even tho I was broke and we were only two for our game I still went because the connection is what I loved about it.
As for talking with people about art i have a bad habit of overthinking interactions especially online, I almost always drop what I'm about to say because of fear of saying something that might be wrong lol
out of interest, which game is it?
goated choice of main. I only have continuum shift at the moment, but im gonna try maining bang when i get Centralfiction eventually
@@jbcjbcat Bang is quite hard to play well. I hope you like dropping your combos x)
You always give the realest advice that hits close to home, it's really helped turn me around on my more negative feelings about art. Art friends are tough for me to come by though, I'm so trash at talking to people I don't know very well ;_;
Omg, this was posted 2 minutes ago! I love your videos, Pikat! You've really helped me on my art journey! Thanks to you and the mysterious frog, my art has really improved❤
Real life really does hit different. Sitting on top of the roof and drawing with buddies sounds so awesome!
the elements that she learned after studying other artists artstyles in another video are very clear in this drawing, the improvement is crazy.
Quite encouraging to see this. Socializing also lets you get inspiration and feedback that you may not realize you needed to improve your art too.
This was propably the best video about growing that I've seen in months. Like rlly. Thank you so much. It help me a lot as a newbie.
Love this video, it really helped me a lot, thank you so much for sharing your experiences! Love your content. :33
I have noticed that my OCs does better than any fanart that I've done which is surprising but maybe that's cuz I think I started off with focusing on OCS. I've given up on trying to reach a bigger audience than I have now but it is discouraging seeing like 5k people unfollow. But imma still keep posting lol
Her thumbnails are so beautiful, idk why but remembers me the artwork of old MapleStory2
Real life events or workshops related to figurative arts in my country are non-existent unfortunately. I'm so thankful for the Internet since it's the only way for me to share stuff xd.
Love the video !!
I don't like vtuber's but this one is an exception this one isn't cringe and gives great tips and makes very enjoyable videos
seeing a great artist and a yakuza fan is just an absolute green flag
New video from Pikat lets go.
I think i will take the Goldmask Strategy. Always focus on improvement and learning via internal and external sources regardless of how many people are looking at you.
ever since i switched to digital my likes have dropped really low, i used to get 100 or 200 sometimes with traditional but now the most i get is 30
8:05 kickflip
incredible
I'm here for the art timelapse d:
That's a very beautiful majima
Gorgeous Majima-chan
Oh god I miss having art friends IRL to hang out with.>_< There was a time where you could find artist co-ops where you could go and work on your stuff, and chat/chill with other artists.
Yay new video
What matters are the friends we made along our journey.
You were describing the absolute right mentality when it comes to video making. This is something that I’m starting to learn now as a creator after seven years on this platform dear God. 0:26
it's awesome to see goromi fanart. How you enjoying the game? I've been bulldozing through kiwami 2 at this point.
i love ur contet! would u ever do a shading or render tutorial ?
Love the videos! Can you do different drawing apps for new artist?
I enjoyed the video, and I've never joined an art community before. That example you brought up with person A and person B was effective. Are you thinking of making a discord server?
Gorgeous portrait drawing of that fine lady btw.
Good wisdom, and wholesome. Do you have a place to answer questions better than a RUclips comment section?
I’m trying to get back into art, and discord and such, but I have a hard time finding motivation or finding community. I guess I just don’t really know where to start, do you have any servers you enjoy or recommendations on how to get inspired? (Sorry if there’s a video on this lol, I’m beginning to binge your channel a bit)
you should do turtorial, i really like you style
You should do a going undercover as a artist video
People have art friends in real life?
lol, I guess some people are just lucky. Or they have good social skills. Maybe a mix of both.
people have friends in real life?
Is there any advice on how often one should make clout drawings if you're a starting artist and have a lot of material to go through at the same time (perspective, basics, etc) ?
are you thinking of ever doing a video on how to study artstyles?
GOROOMIIIII
Just ask for a re-post or boost. nobody likes my ideas enough to share them anyways. especially post 2022.
thanks for the vid, but I dunno if it's a me thing but the music distracted me a little bit on this one
no ur right, its a bit loud its hard to hear her kinda
6:46 GAH! Spooky image! wait is this a mirror?
how much do i interact? they legit told me to stop being active... in a semi dead server... not spamming, literally, waiting, and waiting... in timestamps... not just saying 'hi' or 'good morning/night' starting a topic on a game or video or cartoon i loved... or a meme...
and still the server said I was the issue? time to find a new one.
How much time do you think should be spent on a picture?
💔 i tryyyyy, me personally I love spending hours rendering a piece (I mean like 10-50+ hours kind of rendering) so when I see my TikTok videos not even hit a thousand especially my fanart pieces (I expect my oc vids to not get views maybe 500-800 at best) it hurts 😖
Oh hi
I love this but I'm kinda stuck in having to work on commissions a few times a day already lol, but posting commissions isn't good for following as people tend to choose things that... few care about... but I've got to take so many that I have less time to post (take less comms? bro, my bills said no haha)
my prices are already high, I'm afraid of upping them more and losing everyone @ V @
regardless your stuff is neat pikat~
Kinda related, but is there a best practice for posting comms to your social? Like do you have them confirm it's okay to be shared when they place the commission, put a disclaimer that you reserve the right to share, email/DM them if it's okay to after it's finished, or just err on the side that it's okay?
@@threnoidia hi get the right to share (privacy fee and me losing the ability to post my own work adds a little fee into the commission people tend to not want to ask for, only sometimes for full privacy), it doesnt matter
the type of content that is commissioned has like a 15% chance to actually be something that people want to see on the feed, otherwise itll fall under the "some OC no one knows about" or "some character color palette that isn't optimized" thus it doesn't catch the eye as well (its not bad it's not good for posts)
I do so many commissions I can pick out the better ones to post, but it's still not what people want, like people asked me for continuation on my comics and my own characters but they also don't support anywhere therefore i can't until comms are done.
👀 cool mate
Hey, nice video, but for the next one, could you please turn down the background music? It's a little difficult to understand you easily if I'm not fully focused on your video
Drawing Goromi ? Based.
I would subscribe if I didn't already
I just dont know what the fuck Im doing at any point at any time. (y)
GOROMI
GOROMI.....
The people that love my art the most are people I have made a good connection with, (my friends) and I also enjoy their work, it’s a chain reaction lol.
Great advice pikat! Your videos are very motivating :>
Also do you have a discord server?
Wow
Drawing fanart never worked for me somehow... my most personal and dear to heart pieces always got most attention. Dunno how that works lol
I love seeing other peoples stuff but I find commenting exhausting. I've been forcing myself to do it more since a comment means so much more than a like and it's slowly gotten easier.
I'm confused so you don't need to be verified to get money from yt? (just confused because kat isn't verified, or my yt is bugged, so is she getting money from yt still?)
The music is kinda loud in this one
I don't really believe in my art anymore. Not sure what's wrong with it but I'm more or less going to promote it using other forms of content creation
I got here within 3 seconds
First!
Oh no the frogs name wasn't blurred in the chat.
anyone please explain her video in short im a bit busy but still wanna know what is she talking about...!! please any help is appreciated..!
it doesnt matter if no one cares, dont you care?..
I want to have those art friends, but I’m shy and not really social person 🥲
What do I do? Also, english is not my first language and I’m concerned about it in communication all the time…
