Spending The Night Solo On Disney’s Discovery Island

- Discovery island is located on Bay Lake in Orlando, FL. The island was once a public place for guests where they could observe many exotic animals and species of birds.
The island opened on April 8th, 1974 and eventually closed it's doors 25 years later on April 8th, 1999. There are many speculations on why Discovery Island closed, but mainly due to the opening of Animal Kingdom, leading to a low attendance and eventually the demise of Discovery Island.

I want the viewer to really experience and feel what it's like just getting to the island itself. Navigating the island is a small part of the trip, preparing beforehand along with improvising was a constant struggle... from my experience, the island was what I can only describe as exploring 'The Twilight Zone.'

Mara getting banned from the Disney Parks forever for trespassing since Disney still owns the Island
I worked there one week in 1980 for overtime. A full time worker from Pioneer Hall in Ft. Wilderness.
The thing at 9:41 and 22:55 is a rodent killer (Squirrels and Rats). Strange to see that Disney is attempting to control pests out there
I've heard that the animals they left behind mutated and that some people have gone missing who went there to explore.
Thats kind of odd, seing as they rarely go there, if at all in a year
I know this comment is 3 years old but still, that's so weird.
Why is Disney essentially wasting money on controlling pests in a pest-infested area? Makes no sense & seems really sketchy if you ask me.
I went there a few months ago. Rowed from a dock on the north side of bay lake with an inflatable raft and 4 bois. left messages on the dock shed. There's a dirt access road with a fence at the end, nice houses to the left. a quarter mile walk and then another fence with barbed wire. The ferries run late till at least 11 (at least they did on the night we went). The place itself kinda wasn't worth it, but the journey was extremely formative and memorable
I also found a certificate of appreciation for two employees from 1998, it was lamenated :)

Nah, that's more like the original Castaway Cay, when they abandoned it. Then it got bitch-slapped by a couple hurricanes. An abandoned jungle island with hurricane-damaged ruins all over it.
dang this man has balls i would not be able to sleep overnight there and even if i went during the day as soon as i saw a big creepy spider i wouldve dipped outa there

Very nice. You have balls of reinforced steel, my dude. Alot of people including myself were wondering what Discovery Island looked like after Hurricane Irma in September 2017 and I guess we finally have an answer. It sucks you weren't able to access the rest of the island though because of all the foliage, but overall a cool adventure. Also, it's known that Nomeus and Flurbex explored the island in 2007, but I guess there's proof that Nomeus explored it in 2008 as well, if not more times. And I guess Matt Sonzwa and Chris didn't get banned from Disney since they were there in May of this year, 2018, lol. Again, cool vid 👍
SpaceCowboy Yes, I was quite bummed I didn’t get to the rest. It was mainly due to exhaustion and paranoia tho. I really did not know what to expect leaving the island, so I ended up staying the entire day relaxing on shipwreck beach, because of heavy boat traffic... hell even a patrol boat came right up to the shore and sat for a bit. So I figured it was best to wait. I ran out of water and food early on my trip. Plus spiders are very real to me... and let me tell you, they were EVERYWHERE. I’m intrigued to see what Matt has going on, I guess we shall see. Thanks btw!
@@StandardStealth I hear you, spiders scare the shit out of me as well, but they don't compare to gators for sure lol. This might sound strange, but if you ever plan on venturing onto the island again, please let me know because I've been wanting to explore that island for the longest time now, but I have yet to find another person or people with even half the balls you have to go with. If not, then off alone I go 💀

When me and my friends were young and dumb we went there and my friend still swears to this day he saw a shadow person standing in the hole on the right side of the gift shop in the undergrowth.
How did yall get in anyways? Did you guys prep up like commandos to survive there even for a day considering the right security around that bay? 😂

The Spectrum Inc. logo is a damn-near carbon copy of the NBC peacock. In older videos exploring the island, nobody ever got a close-up of it. So I just assumed it was something from NBC, although why Disney would have anything from them (if anything, it would be from ABC) was beyond me.
Spectrum is the cable provider for the Orlando area. The NBC logo was probably featured for the month of December with other months featuring other network logos.
spectrum cable’s logo used to look like that? wow. moved to florida in 2018 and we had to get spectrum because verizon isn’t available

The security in my experience was not present but I launched my boat from the north side of bay lake, whereas this guy launched from the south from river country, which I know has cameras and possibly security guard. I think the real danger is being spotted by a ferry while rowing to the island

The building is the Vet hospital and administration offices the bird cages are holding area for animals being treated.

There's a DI zookeeper Facebook page they might accept you. But many hate the explorers, it was our life and it feels invasive to many. The outpost also served beer. Dot ran it. Such a waste

My guess is it will cost them a lot of money, but they don't seem to have a shortage of that. This could be due to asbestos etc. The horns are the ferries going past the island. They have one ferry going to the resort and one coming back every 10mins throughout the day. Thanks!
There are ferries crossing the lake between the resorts and the campgrounds and all doing tours of the lake area.

They closed it because it wasnt profitable, making it worse was animal kingdom. It was just opened and it sealed its fate for discovery island.
