Not only is she an extraordinary dancer, but she gets transformed into the character actually! Music and body language are beautifully combined in this great classical ballet. A gem!
The best goodbye to think of... A personal idol and epitome of unreachable artistry, elegance and true character. Always herself, always authentic, always searching - a true master. RIP, Maya...
This pas de deux performance looks so recent, as if it were from yesterday, but the identity of the two artists suggests otherwise. In this role Maya Plisetskaya must have been in her 40s, and she died last year at the age of 89. It just shows that the art of dance is timeless.
I saw this film when I was 15 years , in PANAMA and it nailed in my heart , forever love for Ballet dancing. As I remember the name of the film was in spanish :El poema de la danza" it might be in English " Diva dance" ,could be? lovely and fascinating film.
This is very, very beautiful without a doubt, and Roland Petit's choreography, together with Mahler's gift for heightened emotional effect, captures the heart. I am not a ballet dancer, so I can't comment on technique, just on how a performance affects me visually and emotionally. Thus, although this is a wonderful performance, my emotions are swept away by the breathtaking beauty, sublime interpretation, and exquisite artistry of the incomparable Svetlana Lunkina and Nicolai Tsiskaridze in these same roles.
I prefer Godunov and Kalfouni in these role. Dominic's performance is more fragile. Maya is looking too independent and proud here in my opinion. (Writing from my husband's account)
I saw this wonderful dancer, precisely dancing this touching piece of Mahler's...unforgettable, and that has bben maybe 3 years ago...when I was an adolescent
We Want Music Without Borders Russian description in the video makes it look as if The Death of the Rose is Mahler's composition by that title, doesn't mention the symphoiny which is so beautiful on it's own.
I will second this comment and add it is a shame there are no recordings of the original cast with the great Rudy Bryans as Maia`s partner Long live Mr Petits work. I grew up watching (and dancing some) them and they have always inspired me so much. Unfortunately these days as he is not here to choose the right dancers, the ballets don`t look like they did back then. The companies are clean but they don`t have the special qualities Mr Petit liked when choosing his dancers
If j remember the first cast in " la rose malade " ballet in 1972 at " Palais des Sports -Paris was Plissetskaya and Denys Ganio in this pdd , i saw it in 1972 with pink floyd also . For me the best version on RUclips is Dominique Khalfouni-Denys Ganio ( Roland Petit dancers of Marseille Roland Petit ballet

Mahler wouldn't have liked it. This was intended as part of a symphony, not as a ballet. The added dancing tries to imbue a meaning that distracts from the original meaning of the music. The music speaks for itself.
We don't know whether he would like It.maybe he would feel honored to have his music used for such great art, ballet. AND made his music visible to so many more people.

She is not just making pretty forms - she is EXPRESSING. A true and genuine artist, like we do not see today. Thank you.
Not only is she an extraordinary dancer, but she gets transformed into the character actually!

Yes, i fully agree with you! This Is a great precios gem of ballet.

Yes, one of the immortal stars of mankind.

I saw her perform it in madrid in 1989 she must have been about 60. if a feather hadfell to the floor of the theatre we would have heard it
She was 48 here, born 1925-2014 AND this was filmed in 1973.
Maya Plisetskaya and Valery Kovtun, of Kiev Opera's ballet company. Filmed in 1973.
Thank you for naming him -- valiant, selfless partnering.

Her charisma remains unequalled.
Thanks.
So beautiful! Brought me to tears.
i love the shapes that both of the dancers make together.
I like your observation, it Is fascinating.
she's so beautiful. and it's so sad....
the passion really moved me.
Pure perfection, an immortal piece of live, sublime art AND Love un motion.
I hope it gets preserved!
Quintessential Maya! Magnificent!
she was the greatest, i love her

wow - 8:34... it's all been leading to that moment . The music floats, she floats and that brief lift could last an eternity...
Amazing
Marvelously expressive ...lovely, lovely, lovely.
This and Legend of Love show her genius at work, enormous talent

Omg this is so beautiful.
No comparison to Godunov.
Extraordinario en belleza y profundidad de expresión. No hay otra igual. Sublime.
Actually the name of the composition is not The Death of the Rose, it's the ballet itself, the composition is Adagietto from Mahler's Symphony Nr. 5
***** Yes, I just remarked the same thing when I shared this. "Death of the Rose" is the dance created by Roland Petit, the choregrapher.
We Want Music Without Borders Exactly :-) Thank you....

Mahler wrote this movement for his wife, Alma. He also wrote a song with the same motifs: Ich bin dear Welt.

this has got to be one of her most outstanding pieces, wonderful technique
Absolutely beautiful.. ❤️🧡

Ah, thanks BytomGirl for the clarification...
did balanchine choreograph this..? Lovely...
It DOES look like Balanchine, and the role shows the influence of ballets made for Suzanne Farrell, especially the Diamonds pdd ....
who's the danseur?
Valery Kovtun, of Kiev Opera's ballet company. A notable personality in Soviet ballet in the 1970's and 1980's.
