      @@davidcowger1903 yes there was only one Brad Delp, however Tommy DeCarlo sounds closer to the studio LP's live then even Brad did. don't get me wrong Brad sounded amazing live well into his 40's, almost impossible to recreate the vocals on those studio LP's live with all the overdubs and layering.

      @timothymidgett9730 given what can be done with amp modelers, digital processing and the studio quality effects processors that are so prevalent today along with the good old tried and true Marshall design amp, it is not that hard to get that "Boston Sound". The best recorded distorted guitar sounds that Tom ever put to tape were the guitar sounds on the first record and Marshall tube amps were the foundation of that sound. Let people like Bob Bradshaw and Dave Friedman work with Barry Goodreau and and it would not be difficult at all to get that Boston sound, and when it comes to this song, Barry would play many of the parts better than Tom and Gary do because Barry played them on the record.
      But to your your point-why would any aspiring guitarist trying to make a name for themselves copy the "Boston sound"? All the greats had their own sounds and style--EVH, Jimmy Hendrix, Larry Carlton, Jeff Beck, Chet Atkins, Les Paul and Eric Johnson to name but a few.
      I think if you hooked Tom up to a polygraph machine, he would tell you that Barry is and was a better guitar player that himself. According to producer John Boylan, Barry helped Tom to be a better guitar player. Barry plays some of the most difficult "virtuoso solos" on the first and second records. Barry's played electric rhythm guitar on this song, and Barry and Tom trade lead solos on this song. Barry plays all of the slide guitar parts on this song as well.

  • @EmersumBiggins
    @EmersumBiggins Год назад +1

    To those of you running down the singer: The vocals and harmonies here beat the shit out of the original band’s live performances. It’s not even close.

    • @neechee5150
      @neechee5150 10 месяцев назад

      @EmersumBiggins Given how much the live sound profession as whole and live pro audio gear have advanced and improved from the 70's and 80's to 2017, given how much onstage monitor sound and mixing has advanced and improved and given how much digital recording technology has advance and improved, you are approaching a false analogy fallacy. You also overlook the fact that Tom and Gary have had decades of playing together and refining their live show and playing these songs live. As for the vocal harmonies, they had better be better on this live show than what the original live Boston band did. Aside from Brad, Barry was the best singer in the band. Tom and Fran were not good singers back ups or otherwise. In this iteration of Boston they have a drummer that was recruited to sing back up vocals as well. They also have a woman singing with them. I never understood why Boston, Journey and Yes do not constantly have three female back up singers, Check out the back up singers for Pink Floyd and Steeley Dan. That is studio quality and precision for you. Before going on the vocal harmonies (note changes included) and the way the backing vocal "ensemble" blends on this performance sounds like crap and are not the same chord voicings compared to what Brad did in the studio.
      I have seen/heard live performances Brad did back in the 70's, and he was not on pitch. Brad had an amazing ear. He had very good relative pitch when working on the first three records as well. Given how tight some of the harmonies that Brad sang in the studio were, Brad had to have an amazing ear and sense of relative pitch. There a couple videos on RUclips where I strongly suspect that Brad can not hear himself which was always a problem given the stage volumes in db that were common in the 70's and 80's. It is a different world when you start using in ear monitors, drastically lower the stage volume and drastically improve the quality of the live mixing boards and outboard gear from what they were in the 70's and 80's.
      Brad also faced what the majority of male singers face as they age-loss of range. Brad was in his 20's when he sang on the debut record. He was 55 when he sang his last Boston show. I do not know how Jon Anderson can sing as high as he does at 70 plus years of age, but father time takes its toll on the male voice and the first thing that shows is the loss of range both in terms of range of scale and dynamic range. It would not surprise me at all if De Carlo does not have a vocal coach to help him keep his voice in shape and to learn how not to strain his voice and damage his voice, I would also want to hear the vocal tracks isolated to see if any autotune was used Many bands use auto tune live as well.

    I remember seeing Boston in Louisville right after the debut album. A really good show. They rocked it out. I wouldn't say they were one of the top band's, they wouldn't on the same level as Zeppelin or Pink Floyd, or Lynyrd Skynyrd, but than again, nobody was. But, Boston was ranked high on the same page as Foreigner, Styx, Bad Company, etc.. just a good rocking band.

    Tom Scholz's cover band! Do they ever miss BRAD! This guy sounds a bit like him, but doesn't have that soulful, smooth voice that Brad had. He really gets on my nerves when he sings the Chorus. Sounds like he is yelling "HI! see beyond the road I'm drivin' Hi! ...." I saw Boston in the 70's right before DLB was released as an album and they were amazing! I also saw them once in the 90's during the GH tour and they were fantastic. Don't care to see them again now that Brad is gone! (Also saw RTZ and they were also great!)

    The best rock band in history... I wish they had been able to make about a dozen albums as good as those first two. This is as good as it gets - and that's from someone who listens mostly to classical. They are just that good... And thanks to the virus, I'll probably never get to see them live...

    Wow you guys were on points at that show that's only a year and 4 months ago.
    I mean Tommy DeCarlo is just extended the longest lifespan of Boston for a long time and Tom scholz is just reinvigorated it's so obvious Tom Scholz is just on fire after 40+ years rocking plus his electronic guitar and amp ROCKMAN BIZ.
