thanks Mark, it's been a very busy fall for me and I have been very slow on the uploads of videos but I hoping to pump out a few in quick fashion moving forward and into the new year.
Good sign of rabbits there. Nice pen set. Merry Christams to you and your family. At least you guys got a bit of snow. Nothing here & going to double digits with rain in the forecast. Things ain't like they was.
Thanks my friend, over 50 years of experience catching rabbits. Sure snared much harder back in those days, more mouths to feed. Now a few rabbits will serve me well. I grew up on rabbits and all the older folks did too, so they wanted a lot of rabbits as well. Because my dad was a hunter for his family and elders I fell into that role as well. Back in the day it was nothing to have 80 plus snares out to try and keep up with the demand for rabbits.
good feed of rabbits there Charlie,, going to set a few after the rain later in the week here,, always try to get a few for Christmas..My 14 year old Grandson now owns my 22 Cooey :)
That's awesome, you're passing on the knowledge, Merry Christmas to you and your family and I know your grandson will have many years of hunting with that faithful Cooey.
You can certainly catch the rabbits Charlie I must say. 3 out of 6 slips is fantastic. Glad I watched and seen your video pop up on utube before going to bed. This made my day after all. Loves watching all your video,s but when you start setting slips and get great success in those slips its pretty interesting and your so good at it. You must know the right height from the ground or snow upwards and the right size hole. Some people say 4 inch round hole. Are yours a little bigger, don,t seem to be by the camera. Cannot wait to see how the pen set turns out. I say 2 rabbits for sure. Great content Charlie. See you on the next video.
I tracked some the other day. No real time to set snares right now. What are they eating during winter? The no-need to dispatch is excellent and the way it should be. Have you tried cedar or pine boughs around the snares?
Wow Charlie that's a hefty rabbit! 🐇 I had a trail camera on a snare set for three days running, a cute rabbit kept knocking down my snare each day...smart little bugger, i'll get him sooner or later😂 Keep the snaring videos coming! PS can you guys use picture wire now over there? And what gauge stainless wire do you recommend (we can use stainless over here in Alaska). I'm using 22 gauge but i think it might be too stiff...
22 gauge stainless is go wire for rabbits, I sure wish we could use it here. Yes we can use 6 strain picture cord or 22 gauge brass. So far the picture cord seems to be holding up better than the brass. I wish we could use the old brass wire we used years ago. I find it killed very quick when the snare was loaded. This time of year the rabbits (snowshoe hares) become very smart and much harder to catch.
Awesome video man !! I’m over in Cape Breton and gotten 20 so far myself, still no snow for snaring lol right now there like shooting milk jugs in the woods
@@NLGhostWolf Yeah I saw that, thanks a lot Charlie, appreciate it bud! Did you know that a rabbit in distress will haul in some brood members of the same family, especially the ma! I do it a lot if I take 410! sit very still!
I feel like the numbers are up this year (in my area, anyhow). I noticed a LOT of tracks when I took the dog out for a romp in the bush. I brought the gun along in case, but saw a few places where they've already established little highways.
I wish I didn't have to travel to find the rabbits, behind the house the pine Martens have the rabbits numbers low, they are relentless in their pursuit of the snowshoe hares.
@NLGhostWolf the area I've been going is about an hour from here. I live right in Sudbury, so that's the closest Crown Land. Putting out snares becomes a commitment when you have to go that far again the next morning to check them and take them down for the week. How far are you driving?
Driving about 40 minutes, scouted a place a little over an hour away to run the snaring workshop. Plenty of sign there. Worth the drive, but also worth putting aside a couple of days prior to scout and build gates so when the time comes to setting out the snares it can be done very quickly. Going back to the same area year after year helps as the only thing needing replacement most time is the anchor pole and the scattered guide stick. I think next season I might invest some time into developing a few areas, where I can walk a small loop with 10 or 12 snares per loop. In the hopes of picking up all the rabbits I need in one or two checks. I'd personally like about 12 for myself and then I can look at feeding some elders no longer able to get out and set snares themselves.
Great video thanks a bunch for posting it, Good job on your 3 bunnies.
Thanks for watching! I will get the next video out soon!
Good going Charley. Great success.

Merry Christmas to you and yours, Charlie. Thanks for the reminder to get some snares out. Nice hatchet, by the way.
thanks and same to you, yes it's a beautifully crafted hatchet. I just need to find a good useful role for it.

They feed on new young trees and as the snow levels increase they can access more brows.

Nice vid Charlie. Few rabbits on the go eh?
Yeah, I got a few, but it's going to take one more trip before the Christmas feast is ready. Gave you a couple of shout-outs in this video.
