To be truthful, I had grown tired of all the restrictions and stuff, and it was time for a change. I had a job lined up prior to my retirement also. So, I retired, and went to work for two separate State level jobs over the year. They were both "desk jobs" and I was not happy, nor did I want to do this type of work for another 20 years. So, I sort of semi-retired in 2003. I started my own small business. After retirement, I paid off all my loans; house, cars, motorcycle, etc.... Now, I live a debt-free life and I'm very happy. Money is not everything. I enjoy the freedom more than the money. Plus, I just turned 59 years old last week. I'm growing old, time for relaxation! :) Take care!

So to chime in my personal opinion and experience on rule #2: You are not ALWAYS gone and deploying. All that is simply based on YOUR job. Not every single job is deploy-worthy . I’m a pharmacy tech and for all 4 years, I haven’t deployed once or tdy. Mind you, this may differ from service to service but I just wanted to throw that out there so that people aren’t thinking that as soon as they join and secure a job, it’s not stop traveling and deploying and it’s not the case unless you have a career that warrants that.

I want to join the military to serve the country! I am a Somali- American and only a little percent of Somalis living in America join the military. So I just want to to pay my respects to America by joining the military specifically the Air- Force or army.
Some I'd add: You dislike commitments. This is my biggest reason for getting out. In the civilian world if you dislike your job you are free to quit whenever and they can't do anything about it. You can't do that in the military. If your squad leader is a power-tripping jerk, oh well you signed the contract. You dislike being tested constantly with your job on the line. While they aren't hard, the ACFT, qual ranges, HT/WT, etc. stress me out and I got tired of it. I only want to worry about my job. You have zero patience for stupid BS. The military is the master at wasting your time and frustrating you. That's why you are compensated so well after 20 years. You dislike people. The military is not a good fit for loners and introverts who want peace and quiet. Hate to say it, but many service members are loud obnoxious and cringey pain the butts.
