Nice job, Chris. You guys always do everything properly, but let’s be honest ain’t no painter ever waited two hours for a primer to dry. They flash off in mere minutes these days, especially in the sun. We use shellac a lot for that reason alone.
But I’ve used this particular primer plenty over the years. It works fine. Two things folks should know though: it’s never going to eliminate that alligator look of old painted wood, and it will not restick loose peeling paint, which is what many people seem to think it’s designed for, and kind of how it’s advertised if we’re honest. But we all know If it’s loose it’s gotta go, so you definitely want to make sure the homeowner understands what is possible and what is not with this product.

It looks great. No sense in trashing a perfectly usable door if you can make it look good, and you did. Fantastic video, exactly what I needed to see. Only one suggestion-it would have been nice to see a closeup of the areas before and after the primer to get a sense for how much it levels it out. I've used their products for years and never been disappointed.

Zinsser peel stop is a game changer. Like you mentioned it’s extremely important to communicate to the customers to align with their expectation as this will significantly improve the before vs after but is not a brand new look that can only be achieved with replacing most of the time. Keep up the great work as the goal is for us to continue to inspire others to build something awesome! 👍🏼

I just had to deal with my house with horribly peeling paint. First, the Wagner Painteater is one of the BEST tools I have ever purchased. It is just amazingly fast, not bothered if a nail is sticking out a little, feathers edges of paint and primer, and if you get to bare wood, doesn't hurt the wood (it doesn't sand). For doing all the fascia around the roof edges, I spent more time moving the ladder than using the Painteater because it is so fast. With a layer of peel stop primer before painting, the fascia looks near perfect. On the peel stop, I tried a couple of brands including the one shown here. But I found the Sherwin Williams PrimeRX peel bonding primer to work better. But it is quite expensive and costs more than twice as much. It is a "non-Newtonian" fluid in its behavior meaning that its viscosity does not stay the same when mechanically manipulated. This means that when you are brushing or rolling it, it temporarily gets a bit thinner. When you stop massaging it, it thickens again. For this reason, I think it fills smaller cracks and such a little better.

I appreciate your thorough explanation about Peel Stop primer. I have a Fypon architectural molded pilaster door surround plus colonial window headers that are 25 years old and only painted once. Some paint from door surround area has peeled to the point that the orangey foam base is showing, so it definitely needs attention. I like your recommended 3 coats which may be my solution to blend areas where paint has peeled. I’m reluctant to scrape since the product is not hard like wood. I will purchase a quart and try it out, then comment here about how far a quart will cover. I love RUclips training since it’s made my efforts payoff.

how does a peel bond primer compare to using an oil primer? i have a side of my house that was painted with latex on bare wood, of course 80% of it bubbled off and peels in big strips, and i don't want to end up with the same problem again. i know that an oil primer will soak into the wood and seal it well, how does the water based peel bond compare?
    what would you recommend?

Combined with 120 grit paper combined with 2 more [ different brand] anti mould primer then 2 x top coats , finish was very good

I understand the need for professional painters to use a product like peel stop to keep projects within the customer’s budget but as a DYIer , my opinion is that if paint is peeling, the layer should removed entirely with the carbide scraper so it doesn’t become the weak link, causing additional coats put over it to peel in the near future.

We used tons of Zinsser alcohol based primer at Disney when I worked there! We primed drywall after removing heavy 54" vinyl to prep for the new vinyl! After sanding the drywall surface after the old vinyl pulled off some of the top layers of paper the Zinsser sealed the drywall surface really good to be able and come back with a skim coat of mud to fill in imperfections which may show through the new vinyl! Zinsser once again to prime the walls after mudding to have a good sealed surface for the new vinyl! Had to use good ventilation though in those hotels and offices where we worked as the alcohol primer was quite potent!

Yes, there would be an line of unpainted door behind the frame. We don’t know how he addressed this.
If there is existing vinyl weatherstripping that is press fit into the door frame. You can just pull it out , and then tape of the sides of the frame, and door before spraying. This works fine. To be be extra sure you don’t get spray through the gap In the door door frame and into the interior of the house, you can also seal the back side of the door with tape as well.
If the weather stripping is not removable then, you would have to do that part by hand.
The video doesn’t address this because it’s presumably taking a short cut for this video.

I sanded it down to the bare wood put a primer on it and then used an exterior paint and now it is peeling and bubbling over the bottom half on both sides. I redid the door in my garage and took my time letting it dry between layers. I don't understand how this happened does anybody have any ideas? I looked it up and the most that I could find is that somehow moisture got trapped below the paint I don't know how that's possible. Oh I also used an exterior top coat. And before I started painting I wood filled any cracks and put silicone on the parameter of a missing window so that moisture would not get into the wood.

Hey Chris, do you think this product is the best for rough texture a 6in by 12in brick to prevent flaking paint/brick falling off? The wall is old and I think my problem is how much moisture is on the inside of the wall. Is it possible to put some on the exterior to help prevent the moisture from leaking through and stop having the brick crumbling off the side of my building.
Thanks Chris and also love the new tool videos

Curious if you have tried the Kilz 3 Premium primer and how does it compare to the Peel Stop? I normally use the Kilz but I might have to try the Peel Stop on my next project.

Killz 3 is a decent water based primer, but the original kills works great, the black labeled one that’s oil based. The red label is good for interior. Killz 2 & 3 are just not as good

Is that stuff good for interior or only exterior use like peeling paint on a ceiling

It's for interior, and exterior work. It works beautifully on peeling ceilings.

Does anyone know if any supply stores in or around the Boise area carry "Norton" brand sandpaper?? Or in Idaho at all as I WILL travel some distance to get the best sandpaper & in my 15+ years experience have not found a better sandpaper than Norton. Anyone who has sanded extensively knows the value of a non clogging sandpaper & all i have been able to find in the Boise area is the 3M sandpaper (garbage sandpaper)
Any info regarding what(if any) stores in the area may carry this brand of sandpaper would be greatly appreciated.

Long time viewer, first time caller. You inspired me to paint the exterior of my house and I’m using many of the products and tools you use.
I just painted a wall with this product and I’m wondering if I got a bad batch. It is white in color and thick, but did not roll out with heavily pigmented coverage as you show here. I used a drill and paint mixer and ran it for several minutes. The can was never opened but I did purchase it 18 months ago.
    Weirdest primer I’ve ever seen.

I just locked up an entire room yesterday with this product. I talk to zinnser or Rust-Oleum product specialists once a week. Best primers in the game!
