Can you connect drives in a broken computer to a portable hard drive with this? Or does it have to be to a computer? If it has to be a computer, will it be a problem if the broken computer is mac and the working computer is a pc?
I hooked it up and it reads it but I don't see any files from my hard drive. How do I get to the files from the hardrive

Vantec SATA/IDE to USB adapter works ok.
PC sees drive but has a C: - C: conflict.
Right-clicked System to "manage" it.
Disk Management see external drive as Disk-2. (Healthy, Primary)
Tried to change drive letter but unsuccessfully. Option is greyed-out.
And idea what i did wrong ???
It really does not look like it will fit a new SSD. They dont have pins. Are you sure this will fit a new SSD style, Like Crucial brand, as another user commented?
My 1 TB hard drive crashed and now I would like to transfer files, pics etc to my new SSD drive I installed. If there were a virus on my old hard drive would I transfer it to the new one, ( I am not sure why it crashed, old age probably ). What would be the safest way to retrieve my information if even possible, thank you. I have this VANTEC kit now, thought I might use it on another HD that crashed.

You can connect nearly any normal HD with a kit like this and it connects via USB.

So I'm using this exact product in order to slave my 2.5 1TB Seagate FireCuda in order to run SeaTools diagnostics on it, as Seagate requests you do before sending it back to them as a replacement, but the drive won't connect to my PC in order to run said diagnostics. Not really sure how to fix it.
So you have the USB 2.0 version of this kit? Are you trying to get windows to see the drive, or are you trying to access it through a bootable software?

I'm trying to get windows to see it so I can run SeaTools diagnostics on it. Unfortunately, it won't show up as an accessible drive on my PC and the SeaTools program doesn't register it as present, either, so I can't run the aforementioned diagnostics.
If you connect the drive directly to the computer via normal means, does Windows see it then? That would at least tell you if the drive was able to be read at all.

You don't need a driver to use this for windows 10. I use it all the time on my Win10 machine.
