/* ---- VIDEO INFORMATION ---- */
Ok, so Invincibles just debuted a big comic character who's one of the most controversial ones in the entire run.
She’s one of the most despised, downright despicable villainesses to ever be featured in a comic book...ever. This week alones seen some massive ones too with a certain someone showing up in X-men 97.
But who is this Sasha Calle Supergirl look-alike and why has she got the internet in a frenzy? Well that’s what we’re gonna break down in this video as we go through the characters most shocking moment.
Be warned, there will be full comic spoilers and discussion of sensitive topics relating to assault. Anissa someone who causes some massive trauma for Mark and she’s definitely a character who needs a trigger warning.
So just a heads up and with that out the way, let’s get into who Vanissa is.
Now in the in the show she is voiced by Shantel VanSanten you may recognise as Patty Pivot In The Flash.
Anissa first debuted in Issue 44 and is largely the same as we saw during Episode 7.

I gotta say, I really enjoyed her introduction into the Amazon Prime series, though I am not really looking for that particular moment between her & Mark being adapted. Also, I was surprised that she was remodeled a bit in the show that she resembles Sasha Calle's Supergirl.
Dude that last part talking about how this is just not a normal thing On their planet is not true. Male in fact it is a normal thing for someone to be taken by force and forcibly create a child. Mark's father literally tells them this afterwards trying to get him to understand why she did the thing Even now it's still messed up. Many things normal on their planet are not normal on earth including that.
I hate her for not ripping off Amber's head 😭😭😭
Personally I don't hate Anissa
And I've asked alot of people and a good 90% all said the liked her so I don't think she is hated
I don't know that my thoughts on Anissa are helpful, I found something about her in the latest episode indescribably hot. The voice actor Shantel VanSanten is bringing something amazing to the character that has a much different vibe than what I had gotten from other Viltrumites previously, its almost like I can hear in her that she's susceptible to being changed by humanity like Marc's dad Omniman was.
Meanwhile, yeah, comic Anissa has this sneer and deep disregard for the care of others that is drawn in her face and body language that is sociopathic and psychotic. If that's where they take her character again, I hope the voice actor is up to bringing together this latest episode's performance with that.
It's funny to me that at this point, the mere word: 'Anissa' can pretty much be considered a trigger word for Invincible Comic Book Fans
Also fuunt anissa is the word for raping (in a general term) in Hebrew
As a comic fan agreed. I'm interested in seeing what they do here tho.

I like that Mark visibly struggles with intimacy after this for quite a while. He can't even make out with Eve without bursting into tears.
And it is addressed directly eventually when he comes clean to Eve about what happened. It's the first important step to heal from traumatic events; being able to express what happened to you, to put it into words. And to do it with someone that stays and supports you.
I'm glad Mark told Eve what Anissa did to him.

Great job Paul breaking down Anissa’s character explaining what she did to Mark with sensitivity and respect for those who might have difficulty dealing with the topic.
If they leave it out, I will be disappointed.
Anissa and her son are important, and shying away from what Anissa is possible of...is not ok.
Don't make a show about a book if you can't deal with what the book would.
I wish the creators stuck their guns on this one and do this part of the story. Woke culture has destroyed stories like these when translated to media and I hope they don't fold.
@@LviathanGGBalam Industries sponsored field trip.
If they leave it out they'll be f*cking sexists!
There're SO MUCH awareness about male-on-female violence in every bit of media, everyone know that man can grape a woman, but when someone tries to tell about the vise-versa thing there are too many people smirking and brashing this thing out, like "no man can be graped, they'll actually like that", and that's so outrageous!((...
Aknowledging the mens grape trauma is a way for equality between sexes imho.
@@LviathanGGI don’t think you can blame this one on woke people. It is religious groups that have always band explicit content in books, tv and movies
Too bad lol, you ain't getting the rape scene, they gonna work ALL the way around it, why ask in this day in age?
What’s more disgusting is that a good handful of people support Anissa for what she did and that Mark “should feel lucky”. Like, I know that the double standards in our society is pretty bad but come on people, justifying Assault? Not cool…
pretty normal in viltrumite culture
strong choose their partner like in animal kingdom
human will also fall back to it if we go back to savage mode
The main problem is when you are comparing different upbrings to your own without any context. It's not just coming from a different culture, it's coming from a different world. On that world that isn't even any opposing view. There is no democracy or different party. Its conform or die period. It's not about Anissa looking good or Mark being lucky. It's that Anissa would not even be alive if she had not adopted the ways she had been taught. She literally would have been killed. Everything she has ever known is kill or be killed and take whatever you want for not only survival of self but survival of your entire people. It's not even how Jor El was the opposite of Zod. He was there to counter Zod. So then we expect to her to come to Earth and hold hands, ask for dates and not kill. Its even more of a fantasy to think she will just become some one else over night. She literally did not know what she did not know.
I wouldn't say I support her, just that if I was in Mark's place I would just go with it. I would feel lucky, but I'm not going to say Mark should feel lucky. Hope that clears it up.
mark was in relationship with eve during that incident@@Jajuan44
I’d let Anissa do whatever to me ngl
I really hope they tackle the men being raped issue. It doesn't need to take away from women, but it is still a problem for those who go through that, you know.
If the roles were reversed I bet you would say leave it out lol
@killmonger5097 hmm, if they tackle the issue responsibly, why cut it out? Sexual assault, or even the constant fear of it, is a major issue for women. Plus, they should've left the bit where she mentions her husband hitted her (met some women who had terrible experiences before and they kept the cycle going in a really fucked up way, it makes her more human in a sense SPECIALLY because she gets "better" later on)
No it’s not. There’s nothing close of any epidemic of men getting forcibly groped by women. And yes, you are taking away from the attention to women.
@@killmonger5097The boys kept in their show.
@@superretrou6776 not really in the show it’s look more like she was cheating and in TWD they didn’t keep the Governor Michonne scene
As someone who experienced something similar in my early years, I know all too well that scars like these run VERY deep.
Anissa has definitely a sasha calle look. My friends and family watch and suport you. The channel helps us especially me get thru hard times.
Ah thanks so much Matt that means a lot mate and all the best to you and yours too
Honestly, as someone who has experienced this, I think this needs to be shown in the show. We need more representation of this in modern media, and they could change it to make it more sympathetic towards mark; focusing on the effects it had on him rather than using it as a way to show how evil Anissa is
And also have Anissa face the consequences of her actions. The worst part of this in the comics she gets very little consequence for what she did to Mark. Like Mark tried to hide that traumatic experience from anyone out of shame and Anissa constantly mocks Mark over it. She was downright vile. And when Nolan and Atom Eve finally found out and were about to tear her up for what she did Mark freaking defended her. The whole thing felt it should have been handled better.
@@toledochristianmatthew9919 if only people hated Mystique and Poison Ivy (who have done similar actions to what Anissa has done) just as much as Anissa.
Anissa: "I don't want to have a kid"
Also Anissa: "I'm having a kid whether you like it or not"
Anissa only has kids with Mark and Scott
Even if it’s uncomfortable, I do want to see her grow and understand the magnitude of what she did.
Believe it or not, she actually *did.* That didn't stop the audience from wishing death on her though. Someone said she, as a writing tool, was designed to ask the audience if they're capable of forgiveness. If that's the case, then for a significant portion of the audience, if not a majority, the answer is a resounding "no."
Given that Anissa’s character journey seems like a rollercoaster of redemption and consequences. It’s interesting how the mere talk about her can stir up strong reactions and can instantly spark strong reactions and memories. She could potentially become worse than Nolan.
She is worse than Nolan. That’s not even debatable. As far as we know Nolan never sexually assaulted anyone and he feels remorse for his actions. He regrets a lot of the lives he took and became better. Anissa never truly expresses regret for her actions whether it be her assault in Mark or anyone she hurt or killed when she was loyal to Thragg. She does change and soften like all the viltrumites on Earth do except Thragg, but they never really give her a moment to reflect on herself and grow as a character.
She doesn’t really redeem herself tho.
@@GreenBro11 That was my biggest problem with the comic book version of Anissa and if they do this again I hope they do a better job this time around.
She is worse than Nolan at least he wouldn't stoop so low as to assualt anyone especially a woman I always felt he was above that killing yes, but forcing himself on someone na, Nolan ain't havin that. Anissa could've mated with another Vitrimite to give her the child she wanted so yeah I'm glad she's dead I simply hated what she did to Mark he didn't deserve that. Had Nolan found out what she did he would literally tore Anissa in half.
You can redeem yourself after doing r***? If this was man to a women i doubt you would be accepting any “redemption arc”
"Love me or hate me. Both are in my favor. For if you love me, I will always be in your heart; if you hate me, I will always be in your mind." - William Shakespeare
😮 nice
I would be interested to see how Amazon deal with the storyline and I wouldn't want them to omit it at all obviously not show it in graphic detail but as a guy who is perceived to be strong by his peers but has been taken advantage of by a woman, I would like it to be understood by more people, that people who look strong can go through assault too and need their own sort of healing journey. It needs to be normalized that assault victims can be anyone not just people others perceive as weak
Its not even that she does the thing in the first place. Its that she gets away with it in virtually every way possible. Mark hides what she did and even covers for her. Anissa openly mocks what she did multiple times, as if she was talking about something trivial. She names the grape child after Mark, as if it needed to be any worse. She is also never punished for it. Nolan and Eve briefly get angry at her and Mark actually defends her from them. Its like take one of the worst things you can do to someone, then get away with it completely, even having your victim cover for you and defend you after the fact. Basically think of how you can make getting graped worse in every possible way and this is what you get here. The whole thing is vile. There are certain points where no amount of redemption can make up for it.
In the “5 years later” context she apologizes multiple times and is completely changed and saves a main character
Because it's a reality in our world and lives.. Gross as it is.

Poor Mark, I wish I could take his place so he wouldn’t have to deal with this.

The whole Anissa story line is shocking but it is great to see a comic address on this topic. I think her character arch is compelling and I hope they don't skip over it.
Hope they keep the story arc in the show. Like Paul said, female on male assault doesn't get spoken about often
In the comics it’s a straight joke tho I can’t take it serious Robert Kirkman clearly doesn’t
@@killmonger5097 Are you stupid? it was treated seriously.
The similarity of Mark telling Immortal that he was faster and stronger than him so he needs to give way to Mark in dire situations and Anissa saying that Earth would be better if they just knelt to Viltrumite rule... sick!
But i actually applaud Robert Kirkman for doing this. SA is such a taboo and almost whispered about topic, but Robert Kirkman handled this issue with about as much grace as he could and i sincerely hope the show will do so as well.
Seeing someone as powerful as Mark being susceptible to this, and the trauma that he faced going afterward, Eve and his family trying to aid the trauma, it's messed up that it happened.. but this does happen. You can be Invincible, but no one is immune to trauma and the darkness that accompanies that trauma.
Anissa does "redeem" herself in the comics, and she actually gives her life to save Eve to show the remorse she felt after experiencing the love that changed Nolan.
I dont agree that Anissa wasnt remorseful at all, as Viltrumites believe in the strong survive. If she hadnt had a family of her own and experienced the love of a family and humanity, she wouldn't have actually changed.
Anissa truly is despicable, but the tears she shed as she died is akin to shedding the ironfisted grip that Viltrumite ideology had ruled over her. That was what Robert Kirkman had tried to get across.. it's the way people live and are brought up to think that shapes us as people. Anissa was a product of her environment; a ruthless, unsympathetic, and unrelenting killer.
Earth had changed her, and I had a hard time wrapping my head around that for years when i thought about this scenario. From Nolan finding out and almost killing Anissa, to Eve squaring up with Anissa when she sees her, this topic is so sensitive that it's hard to say that Anissa becomes a better person. SA is the transgression of ones private and personal energy, its almost an assault against ones soul, which is why it's such a personal and unforgivable crime. Anissa then giving her own as an attempt to repair the damage she did to Mark's by saving his loved ones is a poetic end to such a dividing and despicable character.
Like i said, Robert Kirkman handled this situation as best as he could. You have to read the entire story before wrapping your head around this.
I hope they change the reason she did what she did with Mark so that her redemption can be more accepted by the audience.
She is being pressured by Thragg to mate with humans but she has a mental bias that human males are weak and inferior. So she goes to Mark whos a hybrid and also the son of Nolan, one of the strongest Viltrumites. She is basically doing selective breeding.
Now first she ATTEMPTS TO SEDUCE HIM but he gets resistant. Anissa then feeling desperate due to Thragg's pressure decides to force herself onto him so she can fulfill her mission and avoid punishment.
People were mad at her not just because she raped him, it was because they showed that she ENJOYED doing it.
So if they want to make her more redeemable they should emphasize the points I made about the desperation from the pressure imposed by Thragg and the Empire and NOT make her enjoy forcing herself on Mark. Even make her feel disgusted by herself at some point.
I could see that..
That could POSSIBLY work. Especially if they take an alternative route where during their fight, when Anissa is rushing Mark to the ground in the sky, maybe they could make that crash into the crater knock Mark out. But then when he comes to, he realizes what Anissa has done & sees her flying off in the distance. And then that’s where he goes “Oh, God.” And if they were to take the “didn’t want to but had to” route like you said, then they should definitely take out the scenes of her mocking him afterwards.
@@Shadowblade_-yi5hr Exactly! Hope they improve this in the show.

I never collected the Invincible comics but don't consider this info spoil-ery: I consider it the same thing as being a Marvel Nerd didn't spoil any Marvel/MCU movies for me. It gives greater context as to what's to come re: adaptation in a different medium which leads to greater appreciation for the IP.

Hm, fair and valid points and opinions,
I hope the Show does better with her Character than the Comics seemingly did, at the very least it seemed like some more showing of what was going on behind the scenes is required.
it's been some time since ive read the comics. when she showed up, my heart sunk. I wasn't prepared.
I hope they do this whole storyline with Anissa way better in the show. It feels at best unresolved and at worst ignored at times. Anissa’s gone for lots of the comic and she never experiences remorse or truly acknowledges her crime. A brief scolding and near beatdown from Omni-man and Eve doesn’t really mean anything, nor does the played out noble sacrifice in death as redemption trope. Feels very dated considering society has matured a lot since the comic. They have a chance to tell a great story here that really handles this subject with more care and respect.
I don't see how the society is matured a lot since, considering how many people in the comments here just outright asking for that story to NOT be adapted...
And just imagine if that one has to be a woman grape story. Imagine how many people would be crucifyied just for thinking that you can ommit a female victim story.
1. Comic is dumb dated, 2. They are gonna 100% change it to fit modern audiences. 3. Watch them make Anissa likeable and change the whole dynamic of her character, I won't be shocked, it's 2024 lmao

I honestly wouldn't blame Amazon if they just omitted Anissa's assault from the adaptation. I know for the most part, Amazon's adaptation has been pretty faithful but mentioning, even more showing assault is a *really* slippery slope that not all networks want to take the chance with. I know Amazon has kept The Boys fairly accurate to Garth Ennis' original work, but they've changed some things such as the severity of Starlight's assault and just having Butcher describe Homelander's assault on Rebecca.
I would be interested to see how they deal with it and wouldn't want them to omit it at all, as a guy who is perceived to be strong by his peers but has been taken advantage of by a woman. I hope they show it , because in the real world men and boys being raped is never shown ,even though it happens a lot. Bring more awareness to the issue , I feel like women try to throw the sexual assault thing in our face too much like it doesn’t happen to us frequently. We just can’t speak on it because it makes us look less of a man , or on some occasions we are brainwashed to believe it’s cool.

So far this this adaptation of invincible has always either managed to surpass the comic or is at least on par with it in terms of quality (for me anyway which I'm very impressed with)so I'm curious to see how this storyline will be handled in the show.
Another notable controversial example that wasn't omitted from the classic anime Berserk was the infamous Eclipse arc, as that fateful event was bound to happen and it was really controversial mind you as I'm not alone in this. And to be clear I do not condone the act that occurred but at the same time removing controversial elements in a animated adaptation would defeat the purpose of the story.
yeap, pretty much.
3:421 made me turn around and check for hidden cameras🤪
It's so far along the way, like a LOT happens before we even get to that point, now, someone theorized that as with other stuff they may have it happen beforetime but, what would be point? the Viltrumites living on Earth and Thragg's plan of having them breed with humans was what triggered what she did, plus there's the fact it's a very sensitive issue, so it's very unlikely.
Spoiler from the comics, and probably for the TV series, I was honestly afraid that Mark's "grape" by Anissa would be shown in episode 7 since the showrunners sometimes show plot points earlier that the comics.
Next ep will be Nolan’s jail break.
TBH I’m excited for it ❤
Bruh, have you read the comics? He gotta get his blue suit, conquest, etc.
Plus they're gonna make Anissa not like how she was in the comics, to fit with modern audiences. I'll be shocked if she steals a kiss lmao
It wouldn't make sense for her to do it now. She did it in the comics after being ordered to breed with earthlings. That has to happen first.
Anissa reminds me of Supergirl's clone Galatea, with her brutality, superiority complex, and mission focus mindset.
Wish I could switch places w mark fr 😭😭😭
Minor correction: There are only 50 pure blood vultromites left
It's sad that Mark experienced that. I could have been different, she could have just left well enough alone.
For a heated character, she’s got a cult following and I'm certain they’re gonna retcon what she did to Mark!
Cool. Good on HS (Paul) and Kirkman for bringing this issue to conversation.
Also, imagine how women surviving this trauma feel...
Especially in Red States in the US. Where the survivors are forced to carry the offspring of people who violate their bodies, sometimes family members, to term. Let alone the thousands of women who desperately want to have children, but they're forced to carry an unviable fetus to term because State laws would send a doctor to jail.
It was a tough moment in the comic and I'm sure it will be even worse in the show.
Your takeaway should be that every person has their own right to be secure in and control their own body and that super powered aliens or the US Govt should have zero say regardless of their agenda or the agenda of their supporters.
I kinda feel like they arent going to do it like that in the show. They should, but i feel like they will back off it a little for the show.
I am curious on how they are going to do Anissa story especially with her doing the messed up thing she did to invincible.
Paul, did you know that “Anissa” can mean “r-pe” in Hebrew? Feel free to Google it, but אניסה (Anissa) is another form of the word אונס (Onness) that means r-pe.
I’m not sure if this is more widely known in the community, but I have a knack for puns and I speak Hebrew so I just kind of made the connection.
That’s crazy, I had no idea
It's funny how amber is considered the most hated character to TV fans
Personally i hate conquest and thragg. Anissa and Nolan are my two favorite viltrumites
I would take this one for the team
even ...................spoilers.....................................................................................................................................if you were married to the women of your dreams (and a stronger baddie) and have a family with a kid on the way....... nah bro try working with women prisoners and tell me her being a bit@# does effect how hot someone is.
but of course its just a cartoon
Truly heroic sacrifice
As a man who was sa'd by his female childhood best friend, thank you for treating this with the seriousness it deserves.
Jesus, grow up
@@JC-nt6pq How about you grow up first
@@JC-nt6pqWhat the hell is wrong with you?? This man survived a sexual assault and had the courage to open up about it online and you decide to judge him for it? That’s fucked up and it shows that you’re the one who needs to grow up
@@JC-nt6pq
No father figure?
@@JC-nt6pq WTF?
*As of right now, I love how she's written in the show…I wonder if they are bold enough to put it in the show. And a part of me wants it in there*
So am I the only one that noticed whenever Nolan is talking about the Viltrumites, it has a flash back to them. One of them looks EXATCLY like Amber ! IDENTICAL ! Look it up!
This and Eve’s abortion stand out as crossing a certain line in the wacky superhero story I’m reading. Wonder it they’ll adapt those two things into the show.
thanx
Who else saw that crater and thought damn things are moving fast
Roasting your audience is wild 🤣
If she hated, why hot?
"she kinda bad tho"
Anissa is awesome. Best invincible villain!
I'm just realizing that Alissa never got any real karma or backlash from the other characters in the comics all that happened to her was comic spoilers!!!!
Pushed forcefully into a wall by Mark.
Being somewhat crushed by eve.
And chocked by nolan. I think thats it
Bro that woman is my favorite she got goth dommy mommy vibes
About tha sa tbh bro I think it made tha comic way better not saying it’s a good thing but it brings out tha real life problems like in the boys. I can truly say it does change a man my brother had that happened to him when he was seven like legit in the same way
I thought for a min she was about to be my most favorite character by killing Amber
Why are their numbers so down? Like why are there only less than 50of them? I feel like I missed it.
Anissa got that "Booty Warrior" energy. I'm all for it!
We're all just waiting for it to happen
I'm waiting for Damian Darkblood's Returns...
