    Bill, having done this, I really appreciate the amount of work that goes into shaping a stone. The diamond plates make a big difference in the amount of time spent dressing the stones. I know I used a lot of sandpaper and silicon carbide. Thanks for sharing your knowledge. Cheers MikeR.

      Thanks Mike. I bought my 3x8 black ark from Jarrod. It was painstakingly shaped on his first plate that was also painstakingly shaped. When the Jarrod plate was introduced, I resurfaced it. I think it was 8-10 hours on coarse grit wet dry papers with SIC. I think I did the 2x6 trans ark in about 4 using the first flexible diamond plate shown. I’ve gotten plenty of guff from Honemaster Superiors who never tried this style because they can hustle razors out the door for $25ea….when they get to your house they are in a ‘Hone Ready’ condition.

    I still own my Jarrod plate . I admire your dedication Bill ❤.
    I'm still studying your methods, flat bevel for now , but a convex strop method is in my future . I still own an original convex strop " The true scientific method " . Great video !

      Those that are timid may consider using gear considered somewhat expendable. For an inquisitive and successful honer on flattened gear with a seldom or unused shaping plate (especially one with experience in re-sharpening shavette blades 😉) it might be worth consideration to get a piece of ‘less than primo Belgian earth’ put a ‘short dimension’ SuperCurve on it. Then, back bevel an already sharp user grade shave piece without hitting the edge before a slight retouch in the conventional fashion. He could still even consider himself a ‘flat honer’. Matter of fact, I might hunt up a cheap Belgian Blue and give that a try. Thanks for watching and your kind words Sir Martin.

    thank you for doing this video. Super cool, to see your process. Man, what a labour of love haha
    I always wondered how you got something even steeper than the jarrod plate, with a satisfactory level of accuracy/reproduceability. What a coincidence that the sink bridge + the diamond plates results in exactly that. I gotta try the z-Lion stuff. Currently I use linen backed AlOx Sandingpaper, which works but there is definitely space for improvement.
    Take care & keep on convex honing :)

    • @billm.2677
      @billm.2677  Месяц назад

      One can almost ‘bleed out’ at the price of those Z-lion pads. They are really nice at conforming to shape in multiple directions, but I still like ‘hogging in the bulk’ on Arks with a coarse diamond plate.

    Talk about going down the rabbit hole! Here’s where I’m at: I have a Red Imp my dad gave me about 30 years ago that I’ve used off and on over those years (I can generally shave without hacking myself), a fairly recently acquired Thiers Issard 6/8, a Norton 4/8k, and a Russian Imperial linen/leather strop. I agree a man needs to figure out how to keep his own razor sharp, and sharp is a relative term. I applaud your efforts, but cannot see myself going this deep down that hole! I will, however, keep watching and learning.

      Thanks for watching. Do remember that those particular ‘rabbit holes’ are only for the exploration of ‘hobbyists’ chosing to jump in. Plenty of folks wishing to economize a still ‘stay sharp’ use lapping films to do so.

      @@brianolsen9286 I will be doing a video honoring the chief proponent of razor sharpening using Lapping Films with a special stunt shave. He catalogued something like 80 pages of information on his work on this style before one of the a$$hole moderatorettes at the Bludgeon & Beatdown Shave Forum cancelled him. I never tried his techniques, but know a lot of folks who found it successful.

    Hey buddy 👋. Man you got patience (labor of love) being able to shape those hard hones. I struggle to get perfect flat with something flat. Seems like to me something like 60 grit sandpaper does cut as good as 220-400!?? I see more stone particles whenever i use higher grot paper. I don't habe luck with 60 grit seems Ike i am just spinning my wheels in the mud and going nowhere.

      Thank you Johan.
      The good thing about Arks, is they maintain shape a long time. Doing coticules and most synthetics is much easier.
      I seem to think that the work involved to get the stone shape wanted had been a major reason it was, and is avoided. Aside from The Superior Shave, there is no razor vendor or honer I know of willing to exert such effort for something like the common $25usd honing charge. Some Honemaster Superiors can hustle a razor through the shop in 10 minutes and figure the customer would never know the difference. It may take longer to hone with this stuff as well, I can’t even imaging honing up a razor in 10 minutes.

    I recently fell into the sharpening rabbit hole and got myself some whetstones. Even got a few knives to razor sharpness. But what would a curvature in the stone do for you?

    • @billm.2677
      @billm.2677  Месяц назад +1

      Thanks for watching.
      A curve in the stone creates a hollow in the bevel much the same as a grinding wheel would. The shape created behind the apex is thinner than that of a prismatic triangle and in my experience gives less resistance in cutting hair for a longer periods of time.
      That said, there would be some difficulty in doing this on knives. The most likely tool to acomplish this in my mind would be the Tormek grinding wheel sharpener, which I would love to have a couple of. I mostly like to sharpen my knives with a rod guided sharpening system (EdgePro) for that precision bevel triangle. I also have sanding belt sharpeners that are much faster start to finish, but leave a convexed bevel that I find only gives high performance cutting for a short time and does not have a good response to a honing rod for maintenance.
      Without a doubt, a well sharpened knife can shave hair, but is far less suited to a routine face shaving regimen than a much thinner razor having 1/2 to 1/3 of the protracted bevel angle.
      I did recently see a professional sushi chef demonstrate the use of a convex hone on a single bevel Japanese knife where he focused steel removal in an area behind the edge.

    • @Penitten
      @Penitten Месяц назад +1

      @@billm.2677 now THAT is an elaborate answer! Thanks for that✌️And it makes sense. Yanagibas (the single bevel + concave knives, which sushi chefs use) are the best example.

    I got a flat oil stone that puts a stupid mean and sharp edge on a razor. I would take that over this tedious mess any day, no offence meant Billy boy. I am sure you get fantastic shaves despite my critique though! Take what I say with a grain of salt, which I am sure of you will.

      Thanks for watching and sharing your worthless opinion. I am kind of wondering now though. Are you one of these experts on things you have never tried, or did you actually try it and fail for incompetence. I found volumes of A$$holes who are experts in the use of convex hones, but never tried them at the B&B forum, you should join up over there. They might even have a Moderatoretta slot for someone with your charm and eloquence.
      For the record there Mr. B.S. Boy (Brandon Saunders) I do have my share of Stupid Mean & Sharp flat oilstones.
      Since you are here on YT, I’d love to see one of your honing videos just to prove to those interested that you are not just here flapping your lip.
      Also, just for the record, YOU will never hone as well as I can regardless of what you use.
      So glad we can both use the high road and take things we say with a grain of salt.
      Have a nice day.
