Thanks Sean. I think full bottles of WH are around $10. They have sample sizes to try the different fragrances. If you want a real freeze kick in the face try Glacial Wintergreen. I like Bergamot Lavender and Orange Chill best.

Cool razor. I'd like to offer a thought about your discussion of edge retention on concave bevels versus straight bevels. In my view it is highly likely that for the average shaver (whatever that is), the number of shaves from a freshly honed edge would be exactly the same with your edge as with one done on flat hones; _assuming equal keenness_ . Why? because the brunt of edge damage occurs at the apex, not back where your are creating a concave shape. From what I saw in your video, only some of your strops are convex but others are flat. In either case, the "give" in the strop material promotes a _convex_ shape at the apex. So, even if all of your strops were convex, for a given _measure of keenness_ , there would be no significant difference in material at the apex. Therefore, the damage due to the stresses of shaving should be the essentially the same.
And here is something for you to consider about abrasives. The amount of material removed increases (roughly) as the _cube of the abrasive size_ . So a 4 micron abrasive removes _8 times_ as much material as a 2 micron abrasive even though the difference between the two linear measurements of those abrasives is only 2 microns. The inverse of this relationship applies to the amount of time you need to spend with an abrasive. To accomplish a given amount of material removal, it will take (roughly) 8 times as long with a 2 micron abrasive as with a 4 micron abrasive.

      All good points.
In my normal process, I use 2 flat strops with a rigid base gently at the process end after the charged balsa set. Beyond that, my maintenance stropping is always done from a shaped surface of 2 curves on leather sandwiched by a short set on .1µ cBN with a long curve. I have no scientific gear to determine what is happening at micro levels near the cutting edge at any time. My discussion and displays are generally to illustrate my theories as to why I have not necessarily found the levels of edge retention on razors I possess that have been honed by others using flat gear. I respect the skills of individuals who sharpened this gear very much, and experienced marvelous shaving performance, freshly honed. I usually strop them on a paddle because I don’t think I know how to strop well enough on my hanging strops to not cause a degradation. It could be my technique failures causing the difference in my experience. I have seen enough published statements that razors honed in methods targeting a hollow bevel shape DO NOT even have EQUAL edge retention to those that are “properly honed”. It is pretty easy for me to see that it really doesn’t matter to someone like myself that considers sharpening his razor as part of a hobby.

I must say, with my ark translucent I can not get a comfortable edge. It is very keen but not that pleasant to use. I have to progress further to the surgical black and then the post shave is so much more comfortable. One day I will get the chance to make some convex hones to see results. Thank you for sharing.

Thanks for watching and your kind words. I have never really been happy shaving directly off of any stone. I also like to go from my Trans Ark (cuts faster) to my Black Ark (smoother) but I have always dressed the black to be less aggressive (1500 grit wet/dry). Very early I started using the stropping pastes made be the strop maker Herold and expanded the abrasives from there. I started on balsa cause you can sand off something you do not like. I tried some diamond abrasives, but eventually sanded them off.

@@billm.2677 I dress my stones as well. But I use dawn dish soap, kind of the same idea of running water, and dilute it until the edges is smooth and consistent. It gives me an edge to where a palm strop is all I need for a comfortable crisp shave.

I use water with Dawn all the time, it is particularly helpful on the Suehiro 20k in which water almost beads up.
Someone once told me to add a few drops of Jet Dry for the surfactant properties.
Maybe I’ll try that coticule again lubed with water/dawn. Might give me some smoothing out that I want.

Watching the honing, sounds like your problems are from the lack of a good bevel for the flat hones. For that awesome coticule edge, it was always important to have a good bevel. If you wanted the best coticule edge your stone could offer I would go to a 10k or so synethic then finish on the coticule with oil and avoid any slurry (or ballistol). If coticule not sharp enough after that I would do some laps on the ark.
Not sure what flat stones you have. Sounds like you try to make up for work not done on the bevel on the mid-range or finishing stones. If you had a flat coticule still, could also just take an already shaving razor to it with ballistol - no slurry - and see how that works out.

Thanks for watching and identifying my problems from the modern prismatic triangle honer’s handbook.
For years, I have heard and read the “you failed to properly set the bevel” mantra from the Greatest of the Honemaster Superiors whose skills at making sure everyone knows how great they are usually exceeds their ability to sharpen.
Had you actually listened to what I had to say about why I abandoned a flat effort on that shave piece, it is unlikely you would have even entered a comment. Like most Badger & Blade sycophants, you fail to understand how much less steel removal is required to hone a razor from a crowned surface. Many hamfisted razor enthusiasts are out there diligently grinding the bejeebers out of their razors to “set the bevel” and run through their progressions as lead by the rabid majority of honing experts and moderators at the dying B&B Shave $hithouse. Be sure to give the Admiral who ‘Luvs his Supper’ my regards.

“people similar to yourself”…such typical shave forum attack lingo.
“Offering some help”…uh yeah, sure man, sure.
You are the perfect visual aid for the Masterclass Shave Forum Honemaster Superior, something I realized from your very first comment on my channel. Maybe if you weren’t so cheap and coughed up the “lifetime fee” to the Fearless Leader Joel, and he will make you one of his Moderatoritas. Then, just like the Admiral, who ‘luvs his supper’, you will have the authority to regulate how everyone uses their own stuff then so eloquently degrade the non-conformist.
I will continue to work on my honing skills, that I am sure already far exceed your own.
Do feel free to tag me in on your channel when you make that video showing why you think my honing methods are so inferior. I will be watching for when you actually shape up a couple of stones for some real experience. Do remember though, even when Steve56 (that most famous Jarrod hater supreme) back beveled a bent up TI razor on a curved stone for the first time, his out of the gate result equaled that of his cumulative years experience, gear and methods.
